'Demure' Is Dictionary.com's Word of the Year for 2024
Jools Lebron's viral social media video about being "very demure, very mindful" while getting ready for work led to a massive increase in the use of the word "demure." The Hapa Blonde / ContributorIf you thought 2024 was very demure, very mindful, youre in good company.Dictionary.com has picked demure as its word of the year, a nod to the viral social media clip created by American TikTokerJools Lebron. In early August, the Chicago-based content creator posted a short video of herself sitting in her car. You see how I do my makeup for work? she asks while looking into the camera and running her fingers through her hair. Very demure, very mindful. I dont look like a clown when I go to work. I dont do too much. Im very mindful while Im at work. See how I look very presentable? The way I came to the interview is the way I go to the job.Audio from the video went viral, particularly the phrase very demure, very mindful. Lebron made headlines around the world, garnering profiles in theCut,Us Weekly,People and many other publications. TheWhite House,NASA andcelebrities used the phrase in the ensuing weeks, and Lebron appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live.At least two people with no known connection to Lebron submitted applications to trademark the phrase, in an apparent bid to capitalize on its popularity. This sparked outrage among Lebrons fans, but the content creator later reassured followers the trademark issue had been handled. Lebron, who identifies as a transgender woman, was able to use hernewfound fame to securepartnerships with brands and other opportunities, which she said allowed her to finance the rest of her transition.Lexicographers with Dictionary.com measured a nearly 1,200 percent increase in the use of demure online after Lebron posted her video, according to a statement. Additionally, searches for demure on the online dictionary platforms website were 200 times greater than their previous rate. But popularity isnt the only factor lexicographers consider when determining the word of the year. Their choice serves as a linguistic time capsule that reveals the stories we tell about ourselves and how weve changed over the year, according to Dictionary.comsblog post announcing the decision.Last year, Dictionary.coms word of the year was hallucinate, a verb that gained traction alongside the rise of artificial intelligence.Dictionary.coms official definition of demure is characterized by shyness and modesty; reserved. However, after the adjectives viral moment, its meaning began to expand. Now, its commonly being used to describe refined and sophisticated appearance or behavior in various contexts, such as at work or on a plane, according to the announcement. As remote employees increasingly return to the office, the subtle art of personal presentation has taken on renewed importance, says Steve Johnson, Dictionary.coms curriculum design manager, in the statement.Demure captures this cultural shift with a modern twist: A word that once carried traditional, often limiting connotations has been reimagined to celebrate understated elegance and suavity, he adds. Its evolving meaning gives people a way to express quiet confidenceembracing modesty and charm as intentional, empowering choices.Another word that lexicographers considered was brainrot, a term that describes low-quality social media content or the effects of spending too much time watching it. Extreme weather, brat, Midwest nice and weird also made Dictionary.coms shortlist for the 2024 word of the year.Last week, Cambridge Dictionaryannounced manifest as its word of the year for 2024. The verb means to use methods such as visualization and affirmation to help you imagine achieving something you want, in the belief that doing so will make it more likely to happen, according to the British dictionary publishers definition.Though manifest is not newits an estimated 600 years oldit was one of the most-searched terms on the Cambridge Dictionary website this year. Its popularity can be attributed to performers, athletes and entrepreneurs, who began using it on social media and beyond.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.Filed Under: Internet, Language, linguistics , Technology, Trending Today

A Solo Dolphin Is Chattering Away Off Denmark's CoastIs He Talking to Himself?
A Solo Dolphin Is Chattering Away Off Denmarks CoastIs He Talking to Himself?Marine biologists are perplexed by the lone bottlenose dolphins vocalizations, because some resemble sounds typically used for communication Bottlenose dolphins are highly social and typically live in pods. National Oceanic and Atmospheric AdministrationIn September 2019, a male bottlenose dolphin began hanging out in Denmarks Svendborgsund channel. Onlookers thought his behavior was odd, because no other bottlenose dolphins had been reported in that part of the Baltic Sea. Even stranger, the creature was totally alone. Bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are highly social and usually live together in pods. Locals nicknamed him Delle, created a Facebook group and began posting photos whenever they spotted him.Eventually, Delle (also known as Yoda or No. 1022) caught the attention of marine biologists at the University of Southern Denmark. They lowered a recording device into the water and were flabbergasted to hear Delle making lots of different noisesincluding many that are typically associated with communication. The dolphin appears to be talking to himself, but researchers dont know why.Scientists describe Delles highly unusual self-talk behavior in a new paper published late last month in the journal Bioacoustics.Researchers recorded Delle between December 8, 2022, and February 14, 2023. Over the course of 69 days, the dolphin made 10,833 total sounds, including 2,291 whistles, 5,487 low-frequency tonal sounds, 767 percussive sounds and 2,288 burst-pulses, or series of clicks made in quick succession.I did not expect the dolphin to be vocal, study co-author Olga Filatova, a biologist at the University of Southern Denmark, tells Forbes. I expected him to be mostly silent, and I was very surprised to get so many sounds. Its fairly common for individual bottlenose dolphins to head out on their own and explore new territories, Filatova tells Forbes. Scientists think these adventurous individuals might help a species slowly expand its range. And, by mating with other populations, these loners also help maintain genetic diversity within the species. But many of Delles solo noises were communicative sounds, which are typically used to maintain contact and coordinate activities between individuals, the researchers write in the paper. With no other bottlenose dolphins around to talk to, what was Delle doing?By the time biologists made their recordings, Delle had been living alone in Svendborgsund channel for more than three yearsso, it seems unlikely that he was trying to call out to other dolphins that might be in the vicinity.Scientists also wondered if Delle could be trying to communicate with a local paddleboarder who often swam with him. But since they heard Delle making noises at night, when humans werent present, they ruled out this theory, too.To add to the confusion, they heard Delle making three distinct signature whistles, or unique noises that individual dolphins make to identify themselves, similar to a nametag. If we hadnt known that Delle was alone, we might have concluded that a group of at least three dolphins was engaged in various social interactions, Filatova tells Live Sciences Melissa Hobson.Scientists still dont know why Delle was making so many noises. And, because very little research has been conducted on solitary dolphins vocalizations, they dont have a lot of other observations to consider, either. But theyve come up with a few theories. Delle might have been talking to himself, just like humans often do when theyre alone. Researchers dont fully understand why humans talk to themselves, but it may simply be a byproduct of our intrinsic need for social interaction, the researchers write in the paper. In other words, as Isaac Schutlz writes for Gizmodo, maybe Delle is just lonely.Still, the scientists urged against making direct comparisons between dolphins and humans. The fact that we dont fully understand self-talk in our own species suggests we should be particularly cautious in drawing conclusions about other species with complex communicative systems, they write.Delle might also have been making the noises involuntarily because he was feeling a particular emotion, similar to how humans laugh out loud when reading something funny. If that hypothesis is true, it means scientists might one day be able to use communicative sounds to better understand dolphins emotions and behaviors.Another possibility is that some dolphin sounds could serve additional unknown purposes, beyond just communication, the researchers write. For now, Delles vocalizations remain a mystery. His perplexing solo babble shows just how much scientists still have to learn about bottlenose dolphins. We still have some way to go before we fully understand why dolphins make the various sounds in their repertoire, says Thea Taylor, who serves as managing director at the nonprofit Sussex Dolphin Project in England and was not involved with the research, to Live Science.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.Filed Under: Animals, Biology, Denmark, Dolphins, Mammals, Social Sciences, Sound Recordings, Water, wildlife

Unions for Ubisoft's Barcelona studio sue company over RTO mandate
Justin Carter, Contributing EditorNovember 25, 20242 Min ReadImage via Ubisoft. At a GlanceThe Barcelona unions aim to reverse Ubisoft's 'sudden' RTO change, which they warn will make complications for all employees.GamesIndustry reports that unions for Ubisoft's Barcelona studio, which works on mobile games and supports titles such as Rainbow Six Siege, filed a lawsuit against the French publisher in October over its controversial return-to-office (RTO) mandate across all its global studios.Ubisoft first announced its RTO policy in September, which calls for employees to work in-person for three days a week. The change was soft-launched at its Montreal office last year and was divisive, with several Montreal workers feeling management went back on remote work promises made during the height of the COVID pandemic. The unions are teaming with Spain's labor group Confederacin General del Trabajo (CGT) to demand Ubisoft reverse the RTO policy, and aim to secure protections for Barcelona staff to continue remote work under a collective agreement. In an email to GamesIndustry, the unions alleged that prior to filing the lawsuit, management did not approach them to negotiate, despite their willingness to bargain. They further claim the RTO choice was made "suddenly and without transparency," and would lead to logistical problems as a result of the influx of returning workers.Since September, developers from Ubisoft's various France-based studios have gone on strike, with encouragement from the French game union STJV. In mid-October, Ubisoft Milan employees also went on strike, and voiced fears about RTO potentially forcing them to quit.Ubisoft Barcelona is the first studio to sue over the RTO policy, and marks the newest string of lawsuits to hit Ubisoft this year. Earlier in November, a pair of California players sued the publisher for unceremoniously delisting The Crew back in March. And in October, a separate pair of players took the company the court for allegedly sharing user data with Meta through its account linking system.Game Developer has reached out to Ubisoft regarding the lawsuit, and will update when a response is given.Read more about:UbisoftUnionizationLawsuitsAbout the AuthorJustin CarterContributing Editor, GameDeveloper.comA Kansas City, MO native, Justin Carter has written for numerous sites including IGN, Polygon, and SyFy Wire. Motion capture workers at 2K have successfully voted to unionize
Chris Kerr, News EditorNovember 25, 20242 Min ReadImage via IATSEAt a GlanceAccording to IATSE, it marks the first successful unionization attempt at a motion capture studio in the video game industry.Staff at 2K's Motion Capture Studio in Petaluma, California, have voted to unionize with the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE).The vote took place on Friday, November 22. According to IATSE, it marks the first successful unionization attempt at a motion capture studio in the video game industry.15 workers (71 percent) voted in favor of the move, while six voted against the decision.Employees at the Petaluma studio filed for the union election in October last year. In response, 2K said it respected the rights of workers seeking a vote but suggested unionization wasn't the best way forward."We know the needs of our workforce are diverse, and that our industry faces new challenges as we continue to evolve and grow," said a company spokesperson at the time. "We feel that we are best served addressing these challenges and changing needs together through our existing feedback channels rather than through a union."IATSE International president Matthew D. Loeb claimed the formation of the 2K MoCap Union is a historic milestone that proves "collective action is the best way to secure fairness, equity, and respect in the workplace.""Their courage will inspire others in the industry to follow suit. This outcome also demonstrates what can be achieved when workers exercise their right to organize, a right that we will continue to fight to defend and expand," added Loeb. The union will now begin negotiations with 2K management to secure a contract that "reflects their contributions to the company's success.""Positive change" and protection in the age of AIRyan Kwok, a motion capture tools engineer at the studio, said the union will be seeking "positive change" in the face of widespread layoffs and the rise of generative AI."I felt inspired to see so many of us rally together to equip ourselves with the means to create positive change at our studio. The state of the industry is severe. Why must workers take the fall when corporations overextend and collapse? On top of that, AI stands to dramatically change the way games will be created if protections for human creatives are not secured in the present," said Kwok."Im optimistic that Take-Two will recognize that we are investing in this studio, just as they have. We hope to bargain in good faith to make this studios processes more transparent, democratic, and equitable for all of us."A huge number of workers at major companies including Microsoft, Embracer, and Sega have unionized in recent years in the hopes of securing better working conditions in a volatile industry.Read more about:UnionizationTop StoriesAbout the AuthorChris KerrNews Editor, GameDeveloper.comGame Developer news editor Chris Kerr is an award-winning journalist and reporter with over a decade of experience in the game industry.
