• James Gunn Wants His DC Universe to Go All Over the Place Tonally
    gizmodo.com
With the release of Creature Commandos this week,DC Studios wants audiences to know every project will be unique to its heroes and villains. With the slate of titles that are going to make up the new era of Warner Bros. superhero franchise house, studio head and director James Gunn doesnt want people to think projects will be specific to his filmmaking MO as its been known. In an interview with Variety, Gunn explained that Creature Commandos is just a small taste of what to expect. I just liked the idea of a soft intro to our universe in which metahumans exist, monsters exist, magic exists, and incredibly complicated political situations exist, he said. And we see what the world of the DCU is through an animated perspective where it costs as much to create a battlefield as it does to create a kitchenwell, not exactly, but not as dissimilar as it would be in a film. What DC Studios is cooking is not a set menu, however. One of the main things I want to establish is that you can do anything at DC Studios, Gunn continued, We can make complete family fare. We can make something thats for general audiences, like Superman. We can make something thats violent and sexual, like thiswhich I didnt think was that violent and sexual; Peacemaker is both more violent and more sexualbut I want every project to have its own voice. It isnt about creating a world in which everything is all sex and violence. Its about creating a world in which we can tell the story about, you know, one type of character in different genres. It will be interesting to see how the franchise feast turns out once more creators get in the kitchen at DC Studios. For the moment well see how Creature Commandos and Peacemakers violence and sex lead into Gunns likely more family friendly Superman, Lanterns, and Dynamic Duoprojects. Creature Commandos premieres this week on Max. Want more io9 news? • Skeleton Crews Version of Major Tom Brings New Wave Energy to Star Wars
    gizmodo.com
Skeleton Crew, the latest Star Wars series to hit Disney+, premiered earlier this week and immediately set itself apart in the galaxy far, far away by boldly embracing Amblin-style vibes. Its set of brand-new characters includes the mysterious, Force-sensitive Jod Na Nawood (Jude Law)and a group of adventurers whose average age skews younger than the usual Star Wars cast members. Keeping that retro 80s feel alive is this new music video featuring a song previously heard in a Skeleton Crew trailer: synth-pop banger Major Tom (Coming Home). The songs original artist, Peter Schilling, found chart success in 1983 with both the English and German versions of the track (that was a big thing in the 80s; remember Nenas 99 Luftballoons?). But Skeleton Crew ups the Star Wars quotient by translating it into Huttese? Yep. Huttese. You can now sing along to Youngee Wim (Bunky Dunko) like a ragtag space pirate even if you dont speak Huttese, because this video contains all the lyrics on-screen. Star Wars karaoke, anyone? Star Wars: Skeleton Crew premiered its first two episodes Monday night, and itll have a weekly drop of the remaining six installments on Disney+. Lucasfilm describes the show as the journey of four kids who make a mysterious discovery on their seemingly safe home planet, then get lost in a strange and dangerous galaxy. Finding their way homeand meeting unlikely allies and enemieswill be a greater adventure than they ever imagined. That plot makes the use of Major Tom (Coming Home), a song about a homesick astronaut who may or may not be lost in space, thematically appropriatein any language. Skeleton Crew starsJude Law, Ravi Cabot-Conyers, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Kyriana Kratter, Robert Timothy Smith, Tunde Adebimpe, Kerry Condon, and Nick Frost. Want more io9 news? Feeling the Concept (Light and Form) - In this architectural creation, form and light converge in a dance, where materiality transforms into poetry etched in stone, muted tones compose a silent symphony, and textured surfaces whisper secrets to fingertips. As daylight pirouettes through carefully placed openings, patterns shift across floors and walls, creating an ever-evolving sonnet of illumination. Here, volumes and planes find a harmonious balance of solid and void, inviting contemplation on the delicate interplay of light and form; a quiet ode to space.Save this picture!Save this picture!Location Indoor and Outdoor - Located in Miami Beach, the residence embraces the understated charm of Miami's quieter moments where nature is a constant companion, the memory of the Art Deco movement lingers in subtle details, and silent luxury permeates its sun-soaked shores. Thoughtfully arranged volumes and planes intersect with curated lines of sight, creating a fluid experience that blurs the boundary between shelter and nature. At the same time, the design embodies the enchantment of a modest, small-scale home by stepping back from the street to harmonize with the neighborhood's scale and character.Save this picture!Program Efficiencies - At its core, the residence blends expansive public areas with cozy, intimate retreats allowing a diverse array of uses such as a monumental kitchen island for both creation and connection and small nooks for studying. Programmatic efficiency and climate responsiveness are enhanced through the strategic organization of forms and spacial flow, with most windows facing north to protect interiors from Miami's intense sunlight while embracing gentle, diffused light.Save this picture!Materiality - The facades introduce a playful integration of volumes and planes that bring continuity and familiarity. In select places, volumes are carefully carved away to foster moments of interaction with nature. One such carve-out forms a serene courtyard, where a Bridal Veil tree stands as a central element; a living sculpture that, like a delicate veil, filters light through its branches. This tree offers a soft interplay of light and shadow, infusing the space with a gentle atmosphere. Nearby, an adjoining terrace invites a quiet retreat behind a breezeblock wall, a classic Miami feature reintroduced for its practicality and aesthetic. The breezeblocks cast dappled light, provide shade, and enable cross-ventilation, embracing Miami's tropical climate in a thoughtful, purposeful design.Save this picture! Conclusion Feeling The Concept - In every detail, this home celebrates the tropical splendor of Miami. Its spaces are a choreography of everyday life; efficient, graceful, and alive with beauty. Utility and aesthetics intertwine like palm fronds in the breeze, creating a place that honors the art of living in harmony with both crafted and natural forms. Here, architecture is an invitation to live well, attuned to nature's gifts and the rhythms of modern life.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeMaterialConcreteMaterials and TagsPublished on December 04, 2024Cite: "Veil House / if studio" 04 Dec 2024. Designed for a typical urban plot of approximately 400m, in the Jardim Paulistano neighborhood of So Paulo, Brazil, the Venceslau House project originated from an initial dissatisfaction when attempting to reconcile a relatively large program with a set of rigorous urban regulations, demanded within the conservation area of the Jardins neighborhoods. The obligation to maintain a minimum setback of 1.50m on one of the lateral boundaries suggested a longer building oriented towards one of the neighbors.Save this picture!Save this picture! On a plot with a 12m front, the resulting open areas were thus narrow and residual, seeming incompatible with the clients' primary desire to create a large lawned backyard, a free space for the children's and family's activities. Given that the terrain was mostly flat and with neighboring buildings very close, the surroundings did not offer remarkable qualities to both the internal and external areas. In response to these conditions, the project was guided by the implementation of two reinforced concrete lateral walls, which establish a new place where the house can rely. If, on the one hand, the two parallel planes offer privacy concerning the neighbors, on the other, they also frame new perspectives.Save this picture!Save this picture! The upper floor consists of two separate blocks, each containing two suites. Their arrangement favored the best sunlight exposure for the bedrooms: the first block is positioned transversely and opens to the front of the site, facing north. Thus, it received special treatment with retracting brise-soleils, allowing both control of direct sunlight in the winter months and ensuring privacy from the street. The second block is rotated 90 and positioned adjacently to the western boundary, therefore increasing the setback from the eastern boundary, allowing the two bedrooms to open to the comforting morning sun. This configuration allowed a more concentrated occupation of the plot, thereby ensuring more space for a sizable lawn that spans the lot's entire width.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The ground floor was designed as an open area and hosts social programs: living room, dining, kitchen, and barbecue areas. The spacing between the two sets of bedrooms resulted in a double-volume space, integrating the living room with the first-floor TV room, in a richly spatial situation. It is precisely in this recess that the house's vertical circulations occur, as well as a skylight that enhances natural lighting in the central part of the floorplan. Additionally, the large glazed opening adjacent to the double-volume space, facing south, serves to bring a view of the sky and stars into the house, without the inconveniences of direct sunlight. By means of open and covered and uncovered spaces between the two blind walls, as well as using large-format aluminum and glass frames with full opening spans, the project explores varied forms of integration between "inside" and "outside," allowing various usage combinations in the transitional spaces from the interior to the garden.Save this picture!Save this picture! The concrete walls also dictate the structural solution of the house. Each of them is supported by two pillars, spaced 15m apart, with 2.5m cantilevers in both directions. They bear the loads of the beams and slabs, which are also supported by a central line of three pillars, spaced 7.5m apart. The concrete walls, however, do not touch the ground: elevated by 1.50m, they limit the neighbors' view but allow the vigorous garden planted beside the lateral boundaries a very delicate project by Oficina 2+ to be enjoyed at all times from inside the house.Save this picture! The concrete walls and slabs were meticulously planned, regarding both the placement of plywood panels and the concreting stages, seeking to avoid visible junctions. Carefully executed, raw concrete undresses its stigmas and gains protagonism, as a surface that cuts and frames the landscape, stimulating the gaze. The residence's technical and service facilities are placed in a basement, that opens toward a lowered garden to provide the space with natural lighting and ventilation. On the houses roof, one finally achieves a privileged view, where the horizon extends over the Jardins neighborhood and beyond the regions corporate buildings. On this last floor, besides a technical slab on the northern portion, a deck/solarium, and a garden were accommodated, all of which enjoy sunlight throughout the day.Save this picture!Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeCanoa ArquiteturaOfficePublished on December 04, 2024Cite: "Venceslau House / Canoa Arquitetura" [Casa Venceslau / Canoa Arquitetura] 04 Dec 2024.
