Marvel Rivals Season 1 Playercount Spikes 34% For A Record High
Marvel RivalsNetEaseGiven the hype surrounding the game, it seemed somewhat likely that Marvel Rivals would beat its launch concurrent playercount. Now, we know just how much its beaten that old metric. On Steam, where the majority of Marvel Rivals gamers are, season 1s launch day brought in a record high of 644,269 players. Thats up from the launch record of 480,990 players, which makes this around a 34% increase. Its possible that this is going to be as high as it goes for the season, but at times we see weekend spikes on Saturday on Sunday nights, so well see. These numbers briefly made Marvel Rivals the most-played game on Steam when CS2 was on its off-hours. Rivals has remained a Top 10 game on Steam since launch, often in the top 5, where it current sits at the time of this writing (a huge chunk of players are in China, which can make its peak hours different than some).Marvel RivalsSteamdbRivals is performing exceptionally well on console as well. Without specific figures, we can see that Rivals is the #4 game on PlayStation, behind only list staples 2K25, Fortnite and Call of Duty, and ahead of College Football 25, Madden 25, FC 25, GTA 5 and Roblox. Thats extremely impressive. Xboxs charts lag pretty far behind so we dont have season 1 launch data yet. That said, Marvel Rivals was still the seventh most-played game on the platform as of the last chart update, and no doubt it will rise from there once more data from season 1 kicks in.PS top 10SonyMORE FOR YOURivals is also performing great on Twitch with loads of popular shooter streamers heading over there for ranked play. Its currently behind only League of Legends, and at times, has been above it.NetEase was smart in that they set up a double-sized season in order to keep momentum going and wow everyone with just how much was being added. Thats four heroes (the entire Fantastic Four), three maps and a $10 battle pass with ten full skins to unlock.Yes, we are definitely still in the honeymoon period, and while Rivals is being called an Overwatch killer, we have to remember thats a nine year-old game. That said, breaking into the multiplayer PvP shooter space has been close to impossible the last few years, and Marvel Rivals is effectively the only game in this genre Ive seen perform this well this quickly. Its a Valorant or Apex situation, which is what I might compare it to. Or maybe even better, potentially. Well see how things go from here.Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, Bluesky and Instagram.Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

Californias New AI-Powered Detection Cameras Were Helpless Against The Palisades Fire
Fire personnel respond to homes destroyed while a helicopter drops water as the Palisades Fire grows in Pacific Palisades, California on January 7, 2025.AFP via Getty ImagesArtificial intelligence, it turns out, is no match for Mother Nature. In the aftermath of Californias devastating 2022 fires, Gov. Gavin Newsom, announced a slew of new initiatives intended to mitigate future catastrophes. Were enlisting cutting-edge technology in our efforts to fight wildfires, exploring how innovations like artificial intelligence can help us identify threats quicker and deploy resources smarter, Newsom explained. The idea is simple: train an AI model to analyze a video feed to signs of emerging fires, and alert a human team that can extinguish the blaze before it becomes a disaster. But as the Palisades fire has shown, its not quite that easy, especially when weather conditions are as extreme as they were earlier in the week. The Palisades Fire was aided and abetted by Santa Ana winds which topped 100 mph spreading embers across brush, trees, and ultimately thousands of homes in the area. The problem is that under conditions like this, you may have as little as 60 seconds from when the fire ignites to essentially when its not controllable, Daniel Swain, a climate scientist at the University of California, Los Angeles, told Forbes.Since the summer of 2023, Cal Fire, the states fire prevention and response agency, has relied on a vast statewide network of over 1,100 publicly available video cameras, known as ALERTCalifornia, to power its AI system, which was created and is maintained by the University of California, San Diego. Over the past year, there have been at least 1,200 instances across the state where the AI tool not only detected a fire, but was faster than traditional 911 reporting during 30% of those incidents. (Data for 2024 has not yet been released.)All fires start out as small fires, but when its pushed by 60-100 mile per hour winds, and the fuel switches from grass and brush to houses, filled with petroleum products, thats just untenable. Its hard, if not impossible, to understand whether this AI has been useful specifically in preventing the spread of otherwise destructive fires. Its really difficult to quantify the fires that didnt happen, David Acua, a Cal Fire spokesperson, told Forbes. But I can tell you that the data from ALERTCalifornia has been incredibly helpful, we have used it in fire behavior training."Experts say that while early detection is helpful generally, this weeks Palisades Fire in western Los Angeles fueled by unusually high winds and extremely dry conditions grew too big too fast before the AI-enabled cameras could make a meaningful difference. All fires start out as small fires, but when its pushed by 60-100 mile per hour winds, and the fuel switches from grass and brush to houses, filled with petroleum products, thats just untenable, Acua added.UC San Diegos ALERTCalifornia camera network captured this image of the Palisades Fire on January 7.ALERTCalifornia | UC San DiegoThe Palisades Fire is being called the most destructive fire in the history of Los Angeles County and Wall Street analysts predict it will likely result in damages of tens of billions of dollars. As of Friday morning, Cal Fire was reporting that this blaze had burned over 20,000 acres. More than 9,000 homes and other structures have been damaged or destroyed, and over 150,000 people are under evacuation orders throughout the Los Angeles metropolitan area.Josh Wilkins, who worked as a firefighter for the San Bernardino County Fire Department for nearly 30 years, and now serves as an advisor to a venture-backed firetech startup, BurnBot, worked with early iterations of this system. He told Forbes that the fire detection AI is now much better than it used to be, but that its not enough.[The AI cameras are a] tool that we can use, but theres so much other stuff we have to do to wipe out wildfire, he said. Theres no way to wipe out the wind. Youre never going to change the Santa Ana [winds]. Were never going to change that. Theres nothing a fire truck or anybody can do.Cal Fire estimates that both the Palisades Fire and the Eaton Fire in the Pasadena area, in another part of the region, are already in the top five of the states most destructive in recorded history. California alone spends over $3 billion a year fighting fires, while at the federal level, billions of dollars are spent annually on wildland firefighting nationwide.Multiple startups and even a fire-focused venture capital firm, Convective Capital, have sprung up in recent years, to support new fire prevention and mitigation technology. In November, a new trade group called the Association of FireTech Innovation was established by the leaders of Convective Capital, and a nonprofit called Megafire Action. The states AI wildfire detection system is not without its recent successes, however. The Orange County Fire Authority, a county fire agency to the south of Los Angeles County, just announced that in December, it had used this AI system to detect and suppress a December incident in a remote area known as Black Star Canyon, east of the city of Orange.Armed with this early detection, OCFA dispatchers launched a wildland fire response, and our firefighters contained the blaze to less than a quarter acre meeting OCFAs goal of keeping 95% of vegetation fires to 10 acres or less, the agency wrote on January 3. No homes or structures were damaged, no injuries occurred, and no evacuations were necessary.MORE FROM FORBES

New Study Identifies Warning Signs of Impatience
Is there a pattern to what tends to make us impatient? And if you are designing a space where you know people are going to have to wait, what would you do to keep their impatience to a minimum?Woman leaning out car window stuck in traffic.gettyThanks to newly published research by the University of Riverside psychologist Kate Sweeny and her colleagues, we have some data which helps to address these questions. Across three studies and a total of 1,401 participants, Sweeny created a number of different hypothetical scenarios to see if she could isolate features of a persons environment which help to predict their becoming more impatient. For instance, in one of her scenarios, imagine you are at the movies when a child nearby is being loud. A given participant in the study would be presented with one of two versions of this scenario. In one version, the parents of the child do not do anything to try to quiet their child down; in the other version, the parents try their hardest to keep the child quiet. Reactions by half of the participants to the first version could then be compared to reactions by the other half of the participants to the second version. As you might suspect, this scenario is designed to probe what contribution blameworthiness makes to peoples level of impatience, in this case someone elses blameworthiness for not trying to keep their child quiet. What were some of Sweenys findings? Among the factors she found that predicted increased impatience were:How unpleasant the situation is that you are stuck in while you wait to achieve your goal. How much you want to achieve that goal, i.e., how important it is to you.Whether someone is blameworthy for preventing you from achieving that goal, and if so, how blameworthy they are.Whether the delay is longer than you expected it would be ahead of time.Interestingly, what did not seem to matter to impatience was the length of the delay by itself. In some cases, a delay of 3 days, say, might not invoke impatience, while in other cases a delay of 30 minutes might.Upon reflection, though, this makes sense. If the 3 day delay is for the closing on a new house, and the 30 minutes is for how long you have been on hold with the cable company, then it is perfectly unsurprising to see people get impatient in the one case and not in the other.MORE FOR YOUAnother potential factor also ended up not making a difference. This was how conspicuous the passage of time is in the situation, say by having a large clock nearby or having your phone with you. I would have thought that having a visible reminder of how time is ticking away would make people more impatient, but generally participants in the study didnt think that it would.Of course, not all people are going to react in the same way when a situation that might lead to impatience comes along. After all, some people get angry or frustrated when the line at the DMV is taking forever; others, though, respond calmly. Sweeny and her colleagues were interested in whether individuals would react differently to similar situations, and if so, what features of their personality would predict these differences. They found that not surprisingly people who were higher on the traits of need for closure and on neuroticism were especially likely to be impatient. Qualities like flexibility, agreeableness, mindfulness, emotional awareness, and executive function seemed to give a boost to patience. These are qualities we can cultivate in ourselves and look for in others to try to better pick out who are the more patient people in our lives. To be sure, future work is needed to replicate and extend Sweenys findings, as she notes, especially beyond English speaking participants who were taking the study online. Other measures of patience besides surveys about merely hypothetical scenarios would also be welcome. Results like these could have a variety of practical applications. In our own lives they can help us consider in advance whether an upcoming situation (going to the DMV, waiting on test results, seeing a traffic jam up ahead) is likely to make us more impatient. If it is, we can try to circumvent that impatience ahead of time (by, say, bringing a book, distracting ourselves by playing games, listening to calming music, etc.). The research findings can also be helpful to those who design environments where waiting will inevitably be involved (service centers, medical testing companies, and so forth).Impatience is often a significant detriment to our well-being, and the more we can recognize the warning signs and work against them the better.

Microsoft is apparently handing out big bonuses to prevent poaching of AI talent
Cutting corners: Artificial intelligence is undoubtedly the hottest topic in tech right now. For Big Tech companies, securing top talent for their AI teams is critical. It's no surprise, then, that Microsoft is pulling out all the stops to make sure their talent doesn't get poached by rivals. An internal Microsoft document obtained by Business Insider sheds some light on how the company is ramping up efforts to retain key AI employees.Managers at Microsoft can request retention bonuses and special compensation packages for employees they deem essential to the company's AI initiatives. These forms include sections asking managers to assess the potential harm to AI projects if the individual were to leave.A notable addition to the process is a field specifically addressing the employee's contributions to AI development. Managers must indicate whether the individual qualifies as "critical AI talent" and explain the risks to Microsoft's AI projects if that person isn't retained.Internal data shows that AI teams were largely insulated from recent layoffs, whereas other groups, such as Azure, were more affected."In the context of AI transformation as a key priority, please indicate if this individual is critical AI talent and share the risk to the AI initiative/s if talent is not retained," reads the document. Business Insider notes that this requirement appears in forms for a specific, large group at Microsoft, though it's possible the approach will be expanded company-wide. // Related StoriesBut read between the lines, and it's clear AI has shot to the very top of Microsoft's list when it comes to hanging onto talent. Previous leaks showed that the average pay for an AI software engineer topped $377,000 about $120,000 higher than Azure engineers. The prioritization of AI talent has also influenced the company's approach to performance-based layoffs. Internal data shows that AI teams were largely insulated from recent layoffs, whereas other groups, such as Azure, were more affected.Microsoft's Chief Technology Officer, Kevin Scott, even pledged in 2023 to match pay for any OpenAI employees they hired away amid leadership chaos at the AI company. This was right as Microsoft was implementing cost cuts and salary freezes, so the move irked some staffers. The fierce battle for AI expertise is certainly driving this increased focus. Microsoft, Google, OpenAI, Meta, and others are scrambling to build the most powerful AI models and apps powered by generative AI. Having developers and engineers who deeply understand the tech behind these capabilities is crucial. It's led to bidding wars and AI specialists getting showered with multi-million dollar pay packages. On a similar note, Microsoft is also prioritizing security at the company following a string of cybersecurity incidents by binding employee bonuses and promotions to security performance.

Tesla unveils refreshed 2025 Model Y with bold design and upgraded features
TL;DR: As Tesla's most popular model enters its fifth year of production, the electric vehicle manufacturer has unveiled a comprehensive update to the Model Y. The refreshed crossover, first revealed on Tesla's Chinese website, is set to hit the market in China this March, with other Asia-Pacific markets following shortly thereafter. The 2025 Model Y features a striking visual overhaul, particularly at the front end. Drawing inspiration from the Cybertruck and Cybercab designs, the new model incorporates a full-width light bar that spans the entire front fascia. The headlights have been repositioned lower on the bumper, giving the vehicle a more distinctive and modern appearance. Additionally, Tesla has reshaped the hood, signaling that this refresh involves more than the typical industry practice of simply updating plastic components. At the rear, the Model Y continues the theme of a full-width light bar, now accompanied by the Tesla script positioned below it. The refresh also includes new wheel designs and color options, offering customers greater opportunities for personalization. While the overall silhouette remains familiar, the updated Model Y adopts a noticeably refreshed aesthetic compared to its predecessor.Inside the cabin, Tesla has integrated design elements introduced in last year's updated Model 3. The interior now features a cleaner, more refined look, with new seats, a redesigned steering wheel, and an ambient light bar.A standout addition is the inclusion of a separate screen for rear-seat passengers. Notably, Tesla has opted to retain the turn signal stalk a feature that has been phased out in some of its other models.Mechanically, the 2025 Model Y shares much in common with the updated Model 3. Tesla has prioritized improving ride comfort by retuning the suspension, addressing what was widely regarded as the previous version's biggest shortcoming.Early reports also suggest that the new Model Y may offer improved efficiency, with better range figures reported on the Chinese testing cycle. This update comes as Tesla experiences its first sales decline in a decade. While the Model Y remains one of the world's best-selling car models and the top-selling electric vehicle the company faces growing competition from Chinese startups and established automakers. The refresh is aimed at solidifying the Model Y's market position and broadening its appeal to a wider customer base.Although the updated Model Y has been confirmed for the Chinese market, Tesla has not yet announced when the refreshed version will be available in North America. However, industry experts expect the wait for U.S. customers to be relatively short, given the model's critical role in Tesla's global lineup. // Related Stories

Thermaltake unveils massive 2000W PSU, but it's too powerful for U.S. outlets
In context: PC component manufacturers are gearing up for the next generation of ultra-powerful GPUs and CPUs from Nvidia, AMD, and Intel. And one area that's seeing a major boost is power supplies. The latest graphics cards and processors are growing hungrier than ever, so PSU makers are stepping up their game. Thermaltake is leading the charge with some incredibly powerful units in terms of wattage. Among their latest offerings is the Toughpower D2000, a monstrous 2000W power supply. To put that in perspective, it's enough power to run an air conditioner. However, there's a catch with this PSU it won't be available in the United States. The reason is both practical and amusing: a Thermaltake spokesperson told PC Gamer that the D2000 simply draws too much power for a standard American home outlet. So unless you have an industrial-grade power setup, you'll have to settle for Thermaltake's other high-wattage options, such as their 1650W or 1600W models which, let's be real, are still immensely overpowered for virtually any consumer PC build out there. The D2000, on the other hand, will be heading to Europe and select other regions where home outlets can handle its immense power requirements. For U.S. customers, the 1650W and 1600W models will be part of Thermaltake's refreshed Toughpower RGB Plus Titanium and Toughpower TF3 Titanium lineups, which debuted at CES 2025. These PSUs are fully modular and feature a sleek, minimalist design unless you opt for the RGB lighting, in which case you can expect vibrant, customizable lighting effects. // Related StoriesThe connector options on these models are extensive. Both the 1650W RGB Plus Titanium and 1600W TF3 Titanium include multiple SATA power connectors, PCIe 5.1 support with 16-pin GPU power ports, and compliance with the ATX 3.1 standard. In terms of efficiency, all models come with 80 PLUS Titanium certifications and include advanced features such as the ability to switch between single-rail and multi-rail power configurations. The RGB Plus models also come with customizable lighting effects for those who want their builds to shine. For more compact systems, Thermaltake offers the Toughpower SFX Titanium 1200W PSU, which delivers an impressive power-to-size ratio. Measuring just 125mm x 63.5mm x 103.8mm, this compact unit supports PCIe Gen 5.1, making it an excellent choice for small-form-factor builds.Image credit: TechPowerUp

Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Microsoft Flight Sim might come to PS5 and Switch 2
Good morning and buckle up, folks: were leaping onto the rumor mill today. As more and more news about the Nintendo Switch 2 emerges as its anticipated announcement approaches, a video game podcaster named NateTheHate has claimed that both Halo: The Master Chief Collection andMicrosoft Flight Simulator 2024 are coming to the Switch 2 and PlayStation 5. NateTheHate has been correct numerous times in the past regarding upcoming games, but we encourage you to take this news with the proper amount of skepticism. The idea of an Xbox title on the Switch 2 is somewhat far-fetched, especially since we still have no clear picture of the consoles specs. However, the Switch 2 might not need the onboard hardware to power titles like this. Xbox made an announcement in February 2024 to bring more of its games to PlayStation 5 and Nintendo, includingPentiment, Hi-Fi Rush, Sea of Thieves, andGrounded. The idea is that the Nintendo Switch 2 could work with cloud game streaming; by providing an interface, gamers could play titles through the cloud that the Switch would not be able to handle on its own. Considering the demanding specifications ofMicrosoft Flight Simulator 2024, streaming is the only practical answer for how Nintendos portable console could handle the game.Recommended VideosOf course, not everything has panned out as expected. For example, Senuas Saga: Hellblade 2 launched as an Xbox exclusive amid a wave of rumors that it would also come to the PlayStation 5. Xboxs decisions are transforming the company into more a publisher than a producer. Fans and critics alike have asked whether Xbox will continue to be a console or whether it will simply become a platform for cloud gaming, similar to Nvidias GeForce Now.Xbox Game StudiosIf Microsoft does bring these games to Nintendo and PlayStation consoles, the decision will benefit players and make these noteworthy titles all the more accessible. The Nintendo Switch 2 will be backwards compatible with Switch games, although it isnt clear whether that will be through hardware compatible (in other words, whether cartridges will work) or if it will only be a digital backwards compatibility. With more and more consoles taking a digital-only approach, its possible the next Xbox console and in turn, the Nintendo Switch 2 could simply be a set-top streaming box versus something with a disc drive or cartridge slot.Editors Recommendations

Maria Shriver explains why she made her kids stand up whenever she entered a room
Maria Shriver opened up about a parenting trick she learned from her mother. She said she taught her children to stand up whenever she entered a room, something they still do to this day.Shriver said the women in her family were "big on manners," something she wanted to pass down.Maria Shriver has opened up about the parenting tip she inherited from her late mother, Eunice Kennedy Shriver, and why she believes it instilled her children with good manners.Appearing on a recent episode of the TODAY podcast "Making Space with Hoda Kotb," Shriver, 69, said that she taught her children to stand up "out of respect" whenever she entered a room something she said they still do to this day."I make them stand up," Shriver said. "I used to make them. Now they just do stand up."Shriver, who is the niece of former President John F. Kennedy, shares daughters Katherine, 35, and Christina, 33, and sons Patrick, 31, and Christopher, 27, with ex-husband Arnold Schwarzenegger.Shriver said the rule didn't just apply when she entered a room."I wanted my kids to, when I walked in the room, or their dad walked in the room, or you would walk in the room, that they stand up out of respect," she said.Shriver also encouraged her children's friends to do the same when they visited their home: "When their friends would come over, I'd be like, ahem."She continued: "I didn't want to walk in the room, and they'd be sitting looking at a phone or watching the game. I'd be like, 'I'm here. Here we are, and here I am. And look me in the eye, say hello, thank me for coming, write me a thank you note if I take you somewhere.'""Even though my kids moaned and groaned about it, they now say it was a good thing," she added. Steve Jennings/WireImage/Getty Images Shriver said the rule is something her mother who died in 2009 also enforced when she was growing up.She added that both her mother and her grandmother, Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy, were "big on manners."Another etiquette rule she learned from her elders was bringing interesting topics of conversation to the dinner table, she went on."When we went to the dinner table, everybody had to have something to bring to the table to talk about, to converse about.
