• What to Watch This Weekend (January 17-19)

Entertainment has hit critical mass over the last decade, with more shows and movies being produced and released than ever before. Its impossible to keep up with everything hitting the digital space, whether it be Premium Video on Demand (PVOD) or a traditional streaming network. With that in mind, we figured it was well past time for us to whip up a little something to help you keep up (and catch up) with all there is to watch in the big, wide world of digital viewing. And thus, the Streaming Rewind was born! Well update this list at the end of each week so you can check out what you may have missed, and whats coming up on the weekend. Well keep it a mix of popular releases and noteworthy lesser-known titles to help you find whats worth taking the risk on as well as dive into a few things that we loved and why we loved em, or just break down a show or movie that left us with some opinions. Sometimes, well even have guest entries from other members of the IGN staff. If youre not interested in all that and just want to see a bulleted list of whats out there, pop on down to the New and Noteworthy and ICYMI sections.Thats a Wrap on Star Wars: Skeleton CrewNow, Skeleton Crew was not for me I found myself extremely frustrated by the first two episodes but I seem to be the lone crone on that one. Though the finale was relatively straight-forward and doesnt connect much to the universe at large, our Staff Writer Jesse Schedeen still gave a great look at what the ending means for everyones new favorite space misfits and Star Wars as a whole. PlayOur National Nightmare Has Ended: Severance Is BackYou know that Rose Dawson meme that says its been 84 years? Thats what I think of when Severance is concerned. Theres a considerable conversation to be had when your show becomes remembered for how absurdly long the gap between seasons is rather than how utterly remarkable its first outing was, but thats a conversation for another day. For now, lets all just rejoice in the fact that Severance has finally returned and that we have a wonderfully distracting mystery. Silo Delivers an Explosive Season 2 FinaleTake there being two Apple TV+ shows on this list as your general reminder that the streamer outpaces every single competitor when it comes to quality/quantity ratio. In an earlier version of Streaming Rewind, I broke down all of the shows you should check out first during the window that the service was free (to remind us that Severance was coming back, of course). We also have a list of the best shows overall on the platform. But, for now, Im just going to tell you to drop what youre doing and catch up on Silo. Its Season 2 finale hit this week and its a big one, featuring major reveals alongside one hell of a cliffhanger, and thats not always an easy balance to strike! • A Different Man Proves That Sebastian Stan Is Best When Hes Unlikable
    www.denofgeek.com
Edward Lemuel is a kind, timid man. Or so it seems. For the first act of the 2024 black comedy, A Different Man, Edward tries his best to avoid attention. He sheepishly slides past the couch blocking his apartment door as new neighbor, the aspiring playwright Ingrid (Renate Reinsve) moves in. He moves through the city with his body bent forward and his arms crossed in front of him, as if shielding himself from some unseen attack. Even when he tries out for various acting gigs, he falls back and gets embarrassed, a quality that only earns him parts in tone-deaf corporate training videos about how to treat people with physical differences. Its easy to see why Edward would conduct himself in this manner. After all, he has neurofibromatosis, a condition that covers his face with deforming tumors. When a miracle treatment removes the tumors and reveals a conventionally handsome face in place of the one he had before, Edward initially behaves the same way, skulking down the street to a nearby dive bar and eyeing with suspicion everyone he passes, including his own reflection.Edward continues that nervousness when a noisy group of revelers burst into the bar to celebrate their favorite teams win. Theyre loud and crass and obnoxious, but instead of bullying Edward like he expected, they bring their shouting alongside him. And when Edward starts shouting along with them, the jerks welcome him into their throng, to the point that a flirtatious woman in the group makes out with him and even performs sex acts on him in the bars hideous bathroom.Edward discovers hes at home among the jerks. And because Edward is played by Sebastian Stan, we know immediately that is going to be a layered and complex jerk at that. In fact, few modern actors excel at portraying unlikable people quite like Sebastian Stan.Buckys Best When BadFor most people, the name Sebastian Stan immediately calls to mind Bucky Barnes, his hardluck superhero in the MCU. Bucky entered the Marvel franchise as Steve Rogers big and strong best pal, a guy who seems to die heroically during World War II only to return in modern day as the unstoppable assassin called the Winter Soldier. As seen in Captain America: Civil War, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, and the upcoming Thunderbolts*, Buckys story has been one of tragedy and redemption.Yet as popular as his character is, Stan has always seemed ill at ease in the role. He relies on a mop of shaggy long hair, its untamed tresses covering his eyes, to relate Buckys internal toil as the Winter Soldier. Bereft of that hairdo in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Stan charms when hes bantering with Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson. But as soon as the two get separated, and he must convey Buckys regret and tentative hopes for acceptance, Stan loses his way. He appears inert on screen, trying and failing to make a creased brow and glower compelling.Popular as the part may be, Bucky hardly shows off Stan at his best. To best understand that, we can revisit Stans work from even before the MCU. The actors first break came playing rich kid Carter Baizen, an agent of chaos in the teen soap Gossip Girl; at the same time that he earned critical acclaim for his part as a jealous prince Jack Benjamin in the weird and wonderful Bible adaptation, Kings. Stan flounders when trying to portray a nice guy in the first half of Renny Harlins sublimely stupid The Covenant, but clicks into place when his character reveals his malevolent intentions in the films final act. These non-Bucky parts set the stage for Stans best work, in movies such as I, Tonya and the horror dark comedy Fresh, and the miniseries Pam and Tommy. In I, Tonya, Stan seems to pull a reverse of Chris Evans transformation in Captain America, apparently shrinking to a reedy wisp of a man to portray Jeff Gillooly, the terrible boyfriend to Margot Robbies Tonya Harding. The effect comes less from any CGI wizardry and more from the attitude Stan infuses in the character. He feels like a person who weighs just over 100 pounds, and whose sense of inferiority makes him at once too aggressive and too resigned. Hes a bitter, hateful man with an insufficient mustache. The horror film Fresh leans too far into ironic visuals and needle-drops to fully work, but Stan stands out as a man who literally preys on single women. In Fresh, Stan marshals his good looks and soft eyes to make his character Steve the type of guy who would attract women like protagonist Noa (Daisy Edgar-Jones). He makes those same features into something menacing and nefarious when he reveals his true intentions and starts dissecting her for literal meat. Its easy to see why fans would clamor for Bucky over Gillooly or Steve, but hes infinitely more engaged and interesting in the latter parts, even if the movies dont always match his skill. An Different, Unlikable GuyYes, Sebastian Stan portrayed real-life monster Donald Trump in 2024s The Apprentice, but his best villain performance of the year came in the A24 film A Different Man, written and directed by Aaron Schimberg. A Different Man follows Edwards life before and after he gets a miracle cure for his neurofibromatosis, which has left his face disfigured since birth. Edward sees himself as a completely different man, and even starts calling himself Guy Moratz and claiming that Edward died. But as Edward as Guy integrates better into society, his anger and bitterness intensifies.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox! That short description makes A Different Man sound like a movie about learning that beauty is only skin deep; that its what is inside that counts. But Schimberg has something more complex, and more cynical, in mind.Guys good looks allow him to become a high-powered real estate agent, successful with cash and women. Still, he keeps returning to the theater, and in particular to Ingrid (Renate Reinsve), a struggling playwright who once lived next door to Edward. Guy discovers that Ingrid has written a play about Edward and he desperately wants the part, to the point where he begins wearing a mask of the face he had removed.Schimberg heightens the irony not only by having Guy get angry at Ingrid for the condescending way she romanticizes Edwards life, literally describing his romance to her stand-in as a Beauty and the Beast story, but also by inserting a third person in the form of Oswald. Played by Adam Pearson, an actor who actually has neurofibromatosis, Oswald charms everyone, embodying the success that Guy thought impossible when he was Edward. To its credit, A Different Man makes all three members of this triad awful in their own ways, without making them inhuman monsters. Oswalds extremely extroverted behavior allows him to disregard the feelings of others and ignore the way that Ingrid fetishizes him, allowing her to center herself in a story thats not hers. That dyspeptic twist, meanwhile, gives Stan plenty of space to play a sour, soiled man. In one delightful sequence, Oswald joins Ingrid and the actors for an after dinner drink and impresses everyone with his upbeat personality. Schimberg cuts from shots of Ingrid and other women laughing historically at Oswald, fully unencumbered by his appearance, to shots of Guy, Stan letting a sneer quiver under his characters smile. As the film builds toward its traditional climax (before moving into extended, and frankly, unnecessary fourth and fifth acts), Guy becomes more erratic on stage. Stan shows no fear of incurring the viewers disgust as he stomps across the stage as Guy, bellowing as pieces of facial prosthetics plop from his face. Its hard not to hate Guy in that moment but, as with all of the characters in A Different Man, its hard not to relate to him either.A Despicable ManA Different Man works not just because it has unlikable characters, but because they feel real and well-drawn. And thats Stans real skill in being unpleasant onscreen. It takes courage for an actor as handsome and popular as Stan to play people that the audience is going to hate. No one would blame him if he kept bringing in money and fans by playing Bucky or similar roles. Say as Dwayne Johnsons partner in rescuing Santa Claus? So its even more impressive that Stan can imbue his onscreen jerks with humanity, making them real and relatable, even as they disgust us.As A Different Man shows, Stan excels at playing despicable men precisely because he plays them so real.A Different Man is now streaming on Max.

    thenextweb.com
A startup called Scenexus has unveiled plans to build digital twins of cities around the world.A spin-off from Dutch research organisation TNO, Scenexus launched this week with a new platform for urban planning. The software blends multiple datasets to clone entire cities and regions.Planners and engineers then use the replicas to precisely analyse the impacts of their ideas. The of EU techThe latest rumblings from the EU tech scene, a story from our wise ol' founder Boris, and some questionable AI art. It's free, every week, in your inbox. Sign up now!According to Scenexus, the platform can accelerate their assessments from days to just minutes. They can then forecast the social, environmental, and economic impacts of developments.A host of factors can be reviewed, from traffic and safety to financial growth and resident sentiment. The concepts can then be fine-tuned to address pressing challenges, such as the housing crisis and congestion. The platform has already attractedclients in Amsterdam, San Diego, and Singapore. More cities are slated to sign up soon.Scenexus has also revealed a new backer for the project. The Hague-based business has raised 1.6mn from the LUMO Rise Fund, a 100mn pot of capital for impact-driven technologies. Scenexus is the first investment from the fund, which is managed by Dutch VC firm LUMO Labs.Andy Lrling, a founding partner at LUMO Labs and a TNW Advisory Board member, has great expectations for the startup. The range of application domains is nearly unlimited, Lrling told TNW.He highlighted 10 particularly promising targets: smart mobility, air quality, noise, climate, spatial development, equity, well-being, liveability, resilience, and energy. To support these applications, Scenexus will supply its digital twin platform as a software-as-a-service solution.Building digital twinsUnder the systems hood, thousands of calculations are processed in parallel by algorithms running on graphical processing units (GPUs). Scenexus said the results arrive up to 1,000 times faster than the leading planning software on the market. Thanks to this speed, clients can rapidly develop new urban planning concepts.Scenexus will now focus on bringing more cities to its platform. The startup has also joined digital cities projects with Microsoft and a European consortium.Lrling is bullish about the companys plans. With Scenexus, cities directly save time, money, and effort, and uncover unforeseen challenges before they arise, he said.At the same time, it enables lasting improvement of the citys liveability and safety, and the well-being of residents and visitors. • You can still buy AirPods Max with Lightning, and thats good for three reasons
    9to5mac.com
Apple discontinued AirPods Max with Lightning when AirPods Max with USB-C debuted last fall. However, you can still easily find the original version new in stores if you shop the right places. There are three reasons why this made be the right move for you.Apple doesnt keep both versions available for purchase, but Amazon, Best Buy, and Target do. Here are some things to know when shopping for AirPods Max in 2025:Both Lightning and USB-C AirPods Max have the same sound performance, battery life, and features.Apple only sells the USB-C model that has the same charging port as the iPhone 15 and iPhone 16.Other retailers sell both, including the Lightning version that uses the same charging port as the iPhone 14 and earlier. If you prefer to have the same charging cable for your iPhone and AirPods and dont plan on upgrading from an iPhone 14 or earlier anytime soon, you might find AirPods Max with Lightning more appealing for now. However, USB-C is awesome and most electronics use the charging port now including new iPhones and iPads. There are other reasons customers might prefer AirPods Max with Lightning too:Originally priced at $549, these go for as low as $399 brand new today.AirPods Max with Lightning also support Lightning to 3.5mm cables for wired use with products that use headphone jacks like microphones and MacBooks.AirPods Max with Lightning come in space gray, silver, pink, green, and sky blue.Meanwhile, AirPods Max with USB-C lack the ability to work over a wired connection (and neither work without being charged), but that doesnt mean the newer model doesnt already enjoy discounts:AirPods Max with USB-C currently go for $449 (regular $549) so the premium over Lightning is just $50.AirPods Max with USB-C also introduces midnight, starlight, orange, purple, and a new shade of blue.So while Apple only sells the latest and greatest AirPods Max, some may find the Lightning version to be superior to the USB-C version or just prefer their color. For now, both versions are generally available while Lightning supplies last.Go for USB-C if you want the most common charging port, dont mind paying a little more, and like one of the new colors. Go for Lightning if you want to save some cash, use Lightning to 3.5mm wired, or have the same charging port as your iPhone 14 or earlier. The only downside? Accidentally getting stuck with Lightning and when you thought you were buying USB-C. Just be careful when shopping, especially since color variations make a difference.Where to buy AirPods MaxUSB-C | Midnight | Amazon / Best BuyUSB-C | Starlight | Amazon / Best BuyUSB-C | Blue | Amazon / Best BuyUSB-C | Purple | Amazon / Best BuyUSB-C | Orange | Amazon / Best BuyLightning | Space Gray | Amazon / Best BuyLightning | Silver | Amazon / Best BuyLightning | Sky Blue | Amazon / Best BuyLightning | Green | Amazon / Best BuyLightning | Pink | Amazon / Best BuyAs of January 17, 2025, the best prices for AirPods Max on Amazon include USB-C midnight or starlight for $449, and silver or green for $399. Meanwhile, Best Buy has each USB-C color for $449, and each Lightning color for $399. Target? Full price on both models, just like USB-C at Apple.MoreAdd 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. • NASA Posts Touching Tribute to the Late David Lynch
    futurism.com
"We will see you in our dreams."Dream WeaverIn the wake of celebrated surrealist director David Lynch's death at the age of 78, NASA has joined the throngs of mourners celebrating the life of the "Mulholland Drive" and "Blue Velvet" auteur."Keep your eye on the donut," the space agency wrote in a post on X-formerly-Twitter, "and not on the hole."That simultaneously mundane and profound statement, published in one of Lynch's transcendental meditation books, was accompanied by an image of a black hole at the center of the M87 galaxy that resembled the delicious fried dough pastry at the heart of so many scenes in "Twin Peaks."Most of Lynch's work save for his 1984 adaptation of "Dune" starring a young Kyle MacLachlan took place on terra firma. Still, he encouraged everyone to "explore the otherworldly and the unknown," as NASA so aptly put it in its post."We will focus not on the loss, but on what we gained from the years we shared this planet with you," the space agency shared. "We will see you in our dreams."Goodbye for NowThe latter half of that tear-jerking homage is reminiscent of comments the "Twin Peaks" creator made in a rare 2023 interview with the BBC. Conductedafter the passing of composer and longtime Lynch collaborator Angelo Badalamenti the year prior, the interviewer noticed that the director kept referring to his old friend in the present tense and the response was flooring."You have to keep Angelo alive," Lynch said. "I believe life is a continuum, and that no one really dies, they just drop their physical body and we'll all meet again, like the song says.""It's sad but it's not devastating if you think like that," he continued. "Otherwise, I don't see how anybody could ever, once they see someone die, that they'd just disappear forever and that's what we're all bound to do.""I'm sorry but it just doesn't make any sense," the lifelong transcendental meditation enthusiast said. "It's a continuum, and we're all going to be fine at the end of the story."Viewed through that lens, Lynch is merely further along the continuum than the rest of us and there's no doubt that those whose lives he touched will indeed be seeing him in their dreams.More on directors: Kink App Throws Party, Guests Alarmed When Woody Allen Shows UpShare This Article

  • New 'Sneaky 2FA' Phishing Kit Targets Microsoft 365 Accounts with 2FA Code Bypass
    thehackernews.com
Jan 17, 2025Ravie LakshmananCybersecurity / Threat IntelligenceCybersecurity researchers have detailed a new adversary-in-the-middle (AitM) phishing kit that's capable of Microsoft 365 accounts with an aim to steal credentials and two-factor authentication (2FA) codes since at least October 2024.The nascent phishing kit has been dubbed Sneaky 2FA by French cybersecurity company Sekoia, which detected it in the wild in December. Nearly 100 domains hosting Sneaky 2FA phishing pages have been identified as of this month, suggesting moderate adoption by threat actors."This kit is being sold as phishing-as-a-service (PhaaS) by the cybercrime service 'Sneaky Log,' which operates through a fully-featured bot on Telegram," the company said in an analysis. "Customers reportedly receive access to a licensed obfuscated version of the source code and deploy it independently."Phishing campaigns have been observed sending payment receipt-related emails to entice recipients into opening bogus PDF documents containing QR code that, upon scanning, redirects them to Sneaky 2FA pages.Sekoia said the phishing pages are hosted on compromised infrastructure, mostly involving WordPress websites and other domains controlled by the attacker. The fake authentication pages are designed to automatically populate the victim's email address to elevate their legitimacy. The kit also boasts of several anti-bot and anti-analysis measures, employing techniques like traffic filtering and Cloudflare Turnstile challenges to ensure that only victims who meet certain criteria are directed to the credential harvesting pages. It further runs a series of checks to detect and resist analysis attempts using web browser developer tools. A notable aspect of the PhaaS is that site visitors whose IP address originates from a data center, cloud provider, bot, proxy, or VPN are directed to a Microsoft-related Wikipedia page using the href[.]li redirection service. This has led TRAC Labs to give it the name WikiKit."The Sneaky 2FA phishing kit employs several blurred images as the background for its fake Microsoft authentication pages," Sekoia explained. "By using screenshots of legitimate Microsoft interfaces, this tactic is intended to deceive users into authenticating themselves to gain access to the blurred content."Further investigation has revealed that the phishing kit relies on a check with a central server, likely the operator, that makes sure that the subscription is active. This indicates that only customers with a valid license key can use Sneaky 2FA to conduct phishing campaigns. The kit is advertised for $200 per month. That's not all. Source code references have also been unearthed pointing to a phishing syndicate named W3LL Store, which was previously exposed by Group-IB in September 2023 as behind a phishing kit called W3LL Panel and various tools for conducting business email compromise (BEC) attacks. This, along with similarities in the AitM relay implementation, has also raised the possibility that Sneaky 2FA may be based on the W3LL Panel. The latter also operates under a similar licensing model that requires periodic checks with a central server. In an interesting twist, some of the Sneaky 2FA domains were previously associated with known AitM phishing kits, such as Evilginx2 and Greatness an indication that at least a few cyber criminals have migrated to the new service."The phishing kit uses different hardcoded User-Agent strings for the HTTP requests depending on the step of the authentication flow," Sekoia researchers said. "This behavior is rare in legitimate user authentication, as a user would have to perform successive steps of the authentication from different web browsers.""While User-Agent transitions occasionally happen in legitimate situations (e.g., authentication initiated in desktop applications that launch a web browser or WebView to handle MFA), the specific sequence of User-Agents used by Sneaky 2FA does not correspond to a realistic scenario, and offers a high-fidelity detection of the kit."Found this article interesting? • Demand and Supply Issues May Impact AI in 2025
    www.informationweek.com
Lisa Morgan, Freelance WriterJanuary 17, 20255 Min ReadAndriy Popov via Alamy Stock This may well be a sobering year when it comes to AI adoption, use and scaling. On the demand side, organizations will be pulling investments back prematurely because theyre not seeing the value they expected. On the supply side, supply shortages, unmet expectations and investor pressure have caused one big tech company to reduce AI infrastructure investments and others will follow, according to Forrester. To date, organizations have been investing heavily in AI and GenAI, not necessarily with a view toward ROI, though ROI can be difficult to quantify from a hard dollar perspective, which senior executives and boards now want. The anticipated shortage of infrastructure will also likely have an impact.Whats Happening on the Demand SideOrganizations will not continue to increase investments in AI if theyre not seeing the value they expect.[C]ompanies are scaling back on their AI investments or too impatient in terms of ROI. They will [likely] scale back on their AI investment prematurely, which is not a good strategy, says Jayesh Chaurasia, analyst at Forrester. The other factor that might be fueling this is the current economic climate. In the last three months, almost everyone is trying to cut back on any type of investment that is not generating a clear ROI, and not only the AI-related stuff.Related:Executives are asking for ROI numbers on analytics, data governance, and data quality programs, and they are demanding dollar values as opposed to improving customer experience or increasing operational efficiency. In 2023 and this year too, we are seeing more focus on ROI related to generative AI, says Chaurasia. Almost every executive was talking about how generative AI is going to just change the world, but it's not as easy as just deploying a model or a generated AI function and then say your job is done because there is a foundational data analytics requirement that will eventually enable it, and which means you need to have proper privacy and security protocols, [such as] access management and data governance. You also must supply better data quality [because] these models are trained on the entire data set from the internet. The fact that people know the models are trained on internet data has inspired internet postings that are intentionally inaccurate or misleading, so the models wont work right. The better answer is, of course, to use your own industry enterprise data, which gives the AI model more information about your company, says Chaurasia. You can very easily set up a connection with your data warehouse and get all the data into the model, but its not that easy because privacy, security, and governance are not in place. So, you're not 100% sure whether you're sharing your data with the model or the entire world.Related:Organizations have expected quick returns but not realized them because the initial expectations were unrealistic. Later comes the realization that the proper foundation has not been put in place.Folks are saying they expect ROI in at least three years and more than 30% or so are saying that it would take three to five years when weve got two years of generative AI. [H]ow can you expect it to perform so quickly when you think it will take at least three years to realize the ROI? Some companies, some leadership, might be freaking out at this moment, says Chaurasia. I think the majority of them have spent half a million on generative AI in the last two years and havent gotten anything in return. That's where the panic is setting in.Explaining ROI in terms of dollars is difficult, because its not as easy as multiplying time savings by individual salaries. Some companies are working to develop frameworks, however. Some managers are reaching out to every business unit to ask the benefits that they have received with proper understanding of ownership, where the data exists [and] lineage of particular data set. They are using some custom surveys to reach out to all the employees in the organization to for their suggestions as well as their metrics, says Chaurasia. Unfortunately, there is no single framework that I would suggest works for every company.Related:Jayesh Chaurasia, ForresterChaurasia is working on KPIs for the various domains, in terms of quality, governance, MDM, data management, data storage and everything that companies can track over the time to see the improvement, but theyre not connected to dollar value. What I'm recommending is find at the tactical, managerial, and executive levels what matters to them [and have] KPIs for each of those different layer levels to maintain and calculate that ROI regularly, so that they can use that KPI those metrics to show the benefit of whether they have improved over time or not.View From the Supply SideIf enterprises are reducing AI investments because the anticipated benefits arent being realized, vendors will pull back. Meanwhile, China has banned the export of critical materials required for semiconductors and other tech-related technologies in response to President-elect Donald Trumps planned tariffs, not to mention the downstream impacts of tariffs -- higher production costs and therefore higher tech prices IT departments will have to bear when budgets are already tight and may become tighter.Bottom LineInfrastructure shortages due to reduced AI investments on the demand side combined with higher prices and a potential US chip shortage due to lack of materials on the supply side would in turn impact the calculus of AI ROI. There are also broader impacts of the incoming administrations policies such as mass deportation, which could impact tech workers, including AI talent, and their employers.About the AuthorLisa MorganFreelance WriterLisa Morgan is a freelance writer who covers business and IT strategy and emergingtechnology for InformationWeek. • Downloads, Trump and VPNs: Everything to Know Before the TikTok Ban
    www.cnet.com
The Supreme Courton Friday upheld a law that effectively bans the social media app TikTok in the US. The law was signed by President Joe Biden last year and calls for the app to be sold by its Chinese parent company ByteDance by Sunday. The court said while TikTok is "a distinctive and expansive outlet for expression, means of engagement, and source of community," Congress determined that a sale is needed to "address its well-supported national security concerns regarding TikTok's data collection practices and relationship with a foreign adversary."If the company doesn't sell the app by Sunday, here's what US social media users should expect. Will I be able to download TikTok to my phone?Under the law, app stores run by companies like Apple and Google will have to remove the app from their stores overnight or face civil penalties. That means you won't be able to download the app to your device, and it also means ByteDance won't be able to issue updates to the app. Will I still be able to access TikTok if I already have it?If you already have the app downloaded to your device, yes. The law doesn't make it illegal to have the app on your phone.Since app stores won't be able to distribute updates to the app after the law goes into effect, your experience with the app may degrade over time and even become insecure. It's unclear how long the app will work on your device without regular updates. Viva Tung/CNETWill I be able to access TikTok from a web browser? No, the law applies to app stores and internet providers alike.Could TikTok just stop working in the US?Yes, there is a chance TikTok could stop working in the US altogether.According to the tech websiteThe Information, sources said TikTok was preparing to shut the app down for US users on Sunday, the same day the law would go into effect. That means even if you have the app on your device, it won't work. If the app were to shut down entirely in the US, it would be a step beyond what the law calls for. The report also said that TikTok plans to give people the option to download their data so they can take account of their personal information.TikTok did not respond to CNET's request for comment. How do I keep my posts and videos I like?TikTok lets you download your posts and posts from your favorite creators. Here's how to download posts from your favorite creators before Sunday.1. Open TikTok.2. Tap the Share button on a post -- it's the arrow on the right side of your screen.3. Tap Save Video. Here's how to save your own posts.1. Open TikTok.2. Go to your profile.3. Tap a post.4. Tap the three dots (...) on the right side of your screen.5. Tap Save Video. The app will save those posts to your photo library. Getty Images/Viva Tung/CNETCould I use a VPN to access TikTok?You could potentially use a VPN on your phone or browser to access TikTok, yes."A virtual private network is a privacy tool that hides your IP address by sending your internet traffic through a remote server," CNET's Moe Long writes. "If I'm in New York, but tunneling through a London server with ExpressVPN, Disney Plus thinks I'm across the pond."A VPN could make it look to TikTok like you're accessing it from the UK, or another country where it's not banned, when really you're in the US.You could also potentially use a proxy server to access TikTok. A proxy server, like a VPN, masks your IP address by sending your traffic through another server first. The main difference between the two is that a proxy server doesn't offer as comprehensive privacy protections as a VPN does.Could President-elect Trump save TikTok?It's unclear at this time. The law would take effect Sunday, one day before the president-elect's inauguration. So even if Trump wants to do something about the law, it'll still go into effect for at least that one day.A Biden administration official told ABC on Thursday that the White House isn't planning on enforcing the law before Trump takes office. The law gives the Justice Department the power to pursue fines of the tech companies that violate the law, so even if the administration doesn't enforce the law, those tech companies could still be liable as long as TikTok is owned by ByteDance.Trump's lawyersfiled an amicus brief in the case two weeks ago, asking the court to delay the ban to give him time to figure out a "political resolution." At this time, Trump won't be able to do anything in this case until he takes office a day after the law goes into effect. For more on the case, here's what to know about the Supreme Court's decision.
