• Shared scooter startup Voi reports its first profitable year as it explores an IPO
    techcrunch.com
Swedish shared micromobility giant Voi had its first profitable year in 2024, according to preliminary unaudited results the company shared exclusively with TechCrunch.Voi, which offers shared e-scooters and e-bikes across more than 100 markets in Europe, recorded 132.8 million ($138 million) in net revenue in 2024. On an adjusted basis, Voi earned 17.2 million ($17.9 million) in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization profit, and around 100,000 ($104,000) in adjusted earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT).While 100,000 profit (on an adjusted basis) doesnt seem like much to go on, Vois founder and CEO Frederik Hjelm told TechCrunch that the companys modest results demonstrate Vois ability to improve its bottom line by 100 percentage points since 2021 is in a tough industry with lots of ups and downs.Lime, another industry leader, reported full-year profitability in 2023.Now were starting to show real cash positive financials and EBIT profitability, so were getting to a place where wed be a good candidate for the public markets in, say, two to three years from now, Hjelm said.Hjelm also noted that a business that revolves around physical assets should highlight EBIT profitability over EBITDA because its a metric that better captures the operational cost structure.Voi didnt share other financial information like net income and operating expenses. Hjelm said the company would release that information with a more detailed audited report at the end of February.Hjelm did note that Vois vehicle profit margins which grew to 57%, up from 49% in 2023 can be considered a proxy for the companys gross margin. The CEO attributes Vois improved bottom line to a series of cost-cutting measures and efficiency improvements such as automation on the product side, and using machine learning models to power predictive maintenance or determine battery swapping schedules. He claimed this has also helped Voi improve the lifespan of its current fleet to around eight years, which has been a big driver of profitability improvements.A thousand small things that distill down to one thing, which is really a focus on discipline and obsession with small details, Hjelm said.Vehicle utilization is also healthy, he said, with each vehicle averaging out at up to 10 rides per day during peak months and two rides per day at off-peak.The first years [of shared micromobility] were quite chaotic when it came to how many players were in the market, location accuracy on the vehicles, parking clutter, and so on, Hjelm said. Over the last three years, we have seen cities maturing and taking what they consider to be the most suitable players to run micromobility schemes in their cities. And that has improved both public acceptance but also profitability on the bottom line for us.Voi ended 2024 with 60 million ($62 million) in cash and cash equivalents. In October 2024, Voi secured 125 million in senior secured bonds ($130M) that are mainly backed by Nordic and American institutional investors a step change for the startup that had until then raised $675.56 million in equity from VCs, according to PitchBook data.Me and my CFO said at the end of 2021 that we dont want to be dependent on equity investors anymore, so lets turn this company profitable, Hjelm said.Voi completed its first drawdown of 50 million ($52 million) from the bond issuance, money that will go towards helping Voi expand its fleet and launch in new markets across Europe. Today, Voi counts about 100,000 vehicles in its fleet 90% of which are scooters. This year, were increasing our bike fleet significantly over the next couple of months, Hjelm said.Raising a public bond is proof of trust from the very sophisticated public debt bond investors, he added. When asked if Voi plans to use any of its cash to acquire other companies there have been rumors that Voi is acquiring Bolts micromobility business Hjelm said that there is no confirmed acquisition offer. But I would buy it at the right price, he said. Bolt is great, but we do micromobility better!

  • DeepSeek reaches No. 1 on US Play Store
    techcrunch.com
Chinese AI lab DeepSeeks Android app has taken the No. 1 spot on the Google Play Store, mere days after the companys chatbot app clinched the top spot on the Apple App Store.According to app analytics firm AppFigures, since its launch in mid-January, the DeepSeek app has been downloaded over 1.2 million times on the Play Store and over 1.9 million times on the App Store across the world. Notably, the actual number of installs could be higher as DeepSeek has a label indicating over 5 million downloads on the Play Store. The rapid rise of DeepSeek in the charts follows a sudden rise in popularity resulting from the release of a series of open-source AI models that are competitive with leading offerings by AI companies in the West, like Anthropic, OpenAI, Meta and Google. However, the Chinese company claims its AI models were trained for just a fraction of the price as the ones from the likes of OpenAI and Meta, and using significantly worse AI chips.DeepSeeks app is essentially a ChatGPT alternative thats powered by the Chinese labs V3 model. You can use the bot to analyze files, answer questions, and get information from the web. The app is free and lets you upload files and sync your chat history across devicesWhile DeepSeek is ruling the charts for now, it will have to get to 300 million weekly users to overtake OpenAIs ChatGPT for a long-term lead in chatbots. Both DeepSeek and its family of models have received a lot of attention from the industry in the past few days. Startups like Perplexity and Gloo former Intel CEO Pat Gelsingers new venture are already integrating DeepSeek for their usage.

  • How China's DeepSeek Redefined The Global AI Race
    www.forbes.com
China's DeepSeek, a ChatGPT competitor reportedly built for just $6 million, has sent shockwaves ... [+] through global tech markets and challenged assumptions about AI development costs.Adobe StockTheres been a lot of debate over the last few days around DeepSeek R1 the Chinese competitor to ChatGPT that was developed for a fraction of the cost and quickly became the number one app download. For those not keeping up with the news financial markets reacted dramatically to the chatbot launch, with tech stock prices plummeting, including Nvidia, which fell by 17% in one day.Fundamentally, this was because DeepSeeks arrival immediately raised questions about the huge sums of money that everyone has always assumed is needed to develop AI.If DeepSeek really was built for just $6 million, can the enormous trillion-dollar valuations of U.S. companies not to mention the recent $500 billion Stargate investment announced by Donald Trump really be justified?Well, digging into the story, I quickly found that theres a little more to it than was immediately apparent. So, heres my overview of the tech story that crashed the AI market, and what it could mean for the ongoing AI revolution. What Exactly Is DeepSeek? So basically, DeepSeek is an LLM-powered natural language chatbot (just like ChatGPT) developed by a Chinese company (also called DeepSeek).MORE FOR YOUIts reportedly close to ChatGPT in terms of power which is impressive considering that it is said to have been built for a cost of just $6 million. ChatGPTs creator, OpenAI, has never been specific about how expensive its own chatbot was to build, but the company has attracted billions of dollars in investment.Just like ChatGPT, DeepSeek can take a prompt and use it to create just about anything that can be written by humans, from poetry to computer code. Like all large language models (LLMs) it can do this because its been trained on huge amounts of text (this is the expensive part of building AI).Where DeepSeek differs from ChatGPT, however, is that its creators have made it open-source. This means anyone can use, view or modify the code in any way they want. ChatGPT, by comparison, is proprietary software, and the exact nature of its inner workings remains a closely guarded secret.Interestingly, it is this open element that gives us a clue about how it was created so cost-effectively.AI pioneer and Meta chief scientist Yann LeCun pointed out that, following standard open-source practice, much of DeepSeek is actually built on top of existing, freely available AI code, such as Metas Llama LLM models. Its highly possible that this dramatically reduced the cost of training the DeepSeek LLM. Even so, news of its release still caused the biggest crash in tech stocks value in recent years. Is AI Overpriced? All of this has inevitably led to questions about whether the gargantuan sums of money being thrown at AI companies particularly U.S. companies can really be justified. As weve already seen, these are questions that could have major implications for the global economy.U.S. stock markets have been on a continuous upward trajectory for most of the past decade. Much of this growth has been driven by tech stocks, particularly by the belief that huge amounts of value will be generated by their investments in AI.U.S.-based AI investors have also been caught off guard by the fact that DeepSeeks accomplishments have come about despite not having access to the latest Nvidia AI processing technology. Nvidia's most powerful AI processors are subject to a U.S. government ban on exports to China. This means that DeepSeek has been forced to rely on performance-capped versions of the chips approved for export. However, some believe that rather than being a barrier, this may actually have been a catalyst for innovation. As reported by MIT Technology Review, Rather than weakening Chinas AI capabilities, the sanctions appear to be driving startups like DeepSeek to innovate in ways that prioritize efficiency, resource-pooling, and collaboration. The Privacy QuestionAlthough its very quickly become very popular, its clear that DeepSeek does raise some red flags regarding privacy. In particular, these relate to the fact that it sends data back to its Chinese parent company.DeepSeek makes no secret of this, meaning theres no legal issue or potential breach of data laws like GDPR.Just as with US-based chatbots, including ChatGPT and Googles Gemini, users agree that they consent to their data being shared when they sign up for the service. The difference, however, is that, unlike U.S. companies, Chinese companies are free, or sometimes even obliged, to share any information they collect with their government. This could lead to the government of China a leading contender in the global AI race - potentially getting access to huge amounts of Western citizens personal data.Just as with the ongoing TikTok controversy, it boils down to fears that this data could give them an advantage when it comes to further training of AI systems. To press home the fact that this is an issue of geopolitical significance, DeepSeek was apparently hit by a huge cyberattack very shortly after it was launched. Although no culprits have been identified as of writing, its claimed that it was a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack, a form of attack primarily intended to take the service offline.A New AI Era?From a business point of view, though, DeepSeeks triumphant launch is as much a victory of open source over closed, proprietary methods of AI development as it is of East over West.By working within an ecosystem where the sharing of ideas and information comes before the need to generate profits, weve seen that innovation is likely to flourish. As LeCun puts it, Because their work is published and open source, everyone can profit from it. That is the power of open research and open source.Even Donald Trump, fresh from announcing the half-billion investment, struck an optimistic note when addressing the subject. If a Chinese company can create powerful AI tools at a fraction of the expected cost, then so can anyone else, he reasoned. So, are we moving past the era when building AI tools is only possible for extremely well-funded global corporations and towards a more democratized development landscape?Lets hope so. Although Im sure that giants like Microsoft and Google will continue to dominate the cutting-edge, open source and its community of collaborative, innovative builders will also play an important part. And if were able to put aside geopolitical issues and focus on moving forward together, thats likely to be a good thing for everyone.

Credit: Getty Images | Tom Williams Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreUS Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) is trying to block a plan to distribute Wi-Fi hotspots to schoolchildren, claiming it will lead to unsupervised Internet usage, endanger kids, and possibly restrict kids' exposure to conservative viewpoints. "The government shouldn't be complicit in harming students or impeding parents' ability to decide what their kids see by subsidizing unsupervised access to inappropriate content," Cruz said.Cruz, chairman of the Commerce Committee, yesterday announced a Congressional Review Act (CRA) resolution that would nullify the hotspot rule issued by the Federal Communications Commission. The FCC voted to adopt the rule in July 2024 under then-Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel, saying it was needed to help kids without reliable Internet access complete their homework.Cruz's press release said the FCC action "violates federal law, creates major risks for kids' online safety, [and] harms parental rights." While Rosenworcel said last year that the hotspot lending could be implemented under the Universal Service Fund's existing budget, Cruz alleged that it "will increase taxes on working families.""As adopted, the Biden administration's Wi-Fi Hotspot Order unlawfully expanded the Universal Service Fund (USF) to subsidize Wi-Fi hotspots for off-campus use by schoolchildren, despite the Communications Act clearly limiting the Commission's USF authority to 'classrooms,'" Cruz's announcement said. "This partisan order, strongly opposed by then-Commissioner Brendan Carr and Commissioner Nathan Simington, represents an overreach of the FCC's mandate and poses serious risk to children's online safety and parental rights."Cruz's press release said that "unlike in a classroom or study hall, off-premises hotspot use is not typically supervised, inviting exposure to inappropriate content, including social media." Cruz's office alleged that the FCC program shifts control of Internet access from parents to schools and thus "heightens the risk of censoring kids' exposure to conservative viewpoints."The Cruz resolution to nullify the FCC rule was co-sponsored by Sens. John Thune (R-S.D.), Roger Wicker (R-Miss.), Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), Marsha Blackburn (R-Tenn.), Todd Young (R-Ind.), Ted Budd (R-N.C.), Eric Schmitt (R-Mo.), John Curtis (R-Utah), Tim Sheehy (R-Mont.), Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), and Cynthia Lummis (R-Wyo.).The FCCs planUnder the CRA, Congress can reverse recent agency actions. The exact deadline isn't always clear, but the Congressional Research Service estimated "that Biden Administration rules submitted to the House or Senate on or after August 1, 2024" are likely to be subject to the CRA during the first few months of 2025. The FCC hotspot rule was submitted to Congress in August. The FCC rule expands E-Rate, a Universal Service Fund program that helps schools and libraries obtain affordable broadband. The hotspot order would let schools and libraries use E-Rate funding for "lending programs to loan Wi-Fi hotspots and services that can be used off-premises to the students, school staff, and library patrons with the greatest need," the FCC says. The FCC's hotspot order said "technology has become an integral part of the modern classroom," and that "neither Congress nor the Commission has defined the term 'classroom' or placed any explicit location restrictions on schools or libraries.""We conclude that funding Wi-Fi hotspots and services for off-premises use will help enhance access for school classrooms and libraries to the broadband connectivity necessary to facilitate digital learning for students and school staff, as well as library services for library patrons who lack broadband access when they are away from school or library premises," the FCC order said.Off-premises use can help "the student who has no way of accessing their homework to prepare for the next day's classroom lesson, or the school staff member who is unable to engage in parent-teacher meetings or professional trainings that take place after the school day ends, or the library patron who needs to attend a virtual job interview or perform bona fide research after their library's operating hours," the FCC said. The FCC order continued:Thus, we conclude that by permitting support for the purchase of Wi-Fi hotspots and Internet wireless services that can be used off-premises and by allowing schools and libraries to use this technology to connect the individuals with the greatest need to the resources required to fully participate in classroom assignments and in accessing library services, we will thereby extend the digital reach of schools and libraries for educational purposes and allow schools, teachers, and libraries to adopt and use technology-based tools and supports that require Internet access at home. For these reasons, we conclude that the action adopted today is within the scope of our statutory directive under section 254(h)(2)(A) of the Communications Act to enhance access to advanced telecommunications and information services for school classrooms and libraries. The FCC order said it would be up to schools and libraries "to make determinations about acceptable use in their communities." Schools and libraries seeking funding would be "subject to the requirements under the Children's Internet Protection Act, which requires local educational agencies and libraries to establish specific technical protections before allowing network access," the FCC said. They also must certify on an FCC form that they have updated and publicly posted acceptable use policies and may be required to provide the policies and evidence of where they are posted to the FCC.Hotspots were distributed during pandemicThe FCC previously distributed Wi-Fi hotspots and other Internet access technology through the $7.171 billion Emergency Connectivity Fund (ECF), which was authorized by Congress in the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021. But Congress rescinded the program's remaining funding of $1.768 billion last year. The Rosenworcel FCC responded by adapting E-Rate to include hotspot lending. Overall E-Rate funding is based on demand and capped at $4.94 billion per year. Actual spending for E-Rate in 2023 was $2.48 billion. E-Rate and other Universal Service Fund programs are paid for through fees imposed on phone companies, which generally pass that cost on to consumers with a "Universal Service" charge on telephone bills.Carr, who is now FCC chairman, said in his July 2024 dissent that only Congress can decide whether to revive the hotspot lending. "Now that the ECF program has expired, its future is up to Congress," he said. "The legislative branch retains the power to decide whether to continue funding this Wi-Fi loaner programor not. But Congress has made clear that the FCC's authority to fund this initiative is over."With the previous temporary program, Congress ensured that Universal Service Fund money wouldn't be spent on the Wi-Fi hotspots and that "the program would sunset when the COVID-19 emergency ended," Carr said. But the replacement program doesn't have the "guardrails" imposed by Congress, he argued."The FCC includes no limit on the amount of ratepayer dollars that can be expended in aggregate over the course of years, no limit on the locations at which the hotpots can be used, no sunset date on the program, and no protection against this program increasing consumers' monthly bills," Carr said.Even if Congress doesn't act on Cruz's resolution, Carr could start a new FCC proceeding to reverse the previous decision. Carr has said he plans to take actions "to reverse the last administration's costly regulatory overreach."Ex-chair said plan didnt require budget increaseRosenworcel said the temporary program "demonstrated what a modern library and school can do to help a community learn without limits and keep connected.""Today we have a choice," she said at the time. "We can go back to those days when people sat in parking lots to get a signal to get online and students struggling with the homework gap hung around fast food places just to get the Internet access they needed to do their schoolwork. Or we can go forward and build a digital future that works for everyone."She argued that the FCC has authority because the law "directs the agency to update the definition of universal service, which includes E-Rate, so that it evolves over time," and "Congress specifically directed the Commission to designate additional services in this program as needed for schools and libraries."Cruz's press release said the FCC "order imposes no overall limit on the amount of federal dollars that can be expended on the hotspots, lacks mean-testing to target children who may not have Internet at home, and allows for duplication of service in areas where the federal government is already subsidizing broadband. As a result, the order could strain the USF while increasing the risk of waste, fraud, and abuse."However, Rosenworcel said the program would work "within the existing E-Rate budget" and thus "does not require new universal service funds nor does it come at the cost of the support E-Rate provides to connectivity in schools and libraries." Addressing the budget, the FCC order pointed out that E-Rate demand has fallen short of the program's funding cap for many years. While there wouldn't be mandatory mean-testing, the FCC program would rely on schools and libraries to determine who should be given access to hotspots. "In establishing a budgeted approach to the lending program mechanism, we expect that the limited number of available Wi-Fi hotspots will more naturally be targeted to students, school staff, or library patrons with the most need," the FCC order said.Jon BrodkinSenior IT ReporterJon BrodkinSenior IT Reporter Jon is a Senior IT Reporter for Ars Technica. • A telltale toilet reveals lost site shown in Bayeux Tapestry

the telltale toilet A telltale toilet reveals lost site shown in Bayeux Tapestry A house in England is most likely the site of a lost residence of Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon King of England. Jennifer Ouellette Jan 28, 2025 1:56 pm | 4 Credit: The Society of Antiquaries of London Credit: The Society of Antiquaries of London Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreThe Bayeux Tapestry famously depicts the events leading up to the 1066 Norman Conquest of England, in which William the Conqueror defeated Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon king of England, at the Battle of Hastings. Two scenes in particular show King Harold feasting in an extravagant hall in a village called Bosham. Archaeologists think they have now located the site of that feast, concluding that it was the king's own home, according to a new paper published in The Antiquaries Journal. The Norman Conquest saw a new ruling class supplant an English aristocracy that has left little in the way of physical remains, which makes the discovery at Bosham hugely significant," said co-author Oliver Creighton of the University of Exeter. "We have found an Anglo-Saxon show-home. The findings are part of an ongoing project called "Where Power Lies," intended to assess archaeological evidence for aristocratic centers across England from the pre-Norman period.Scholars believe the Bayeux Tapestry dates back to the 11th century and was likely created just a few years after the Battle of Hastings, mostly likely commissioned by Bishop Odo of Bayeux (although there is still considerable debate over alternative theories). It's technically not a tapestry, since it's not woven but embroidered on linen using wool yarn of various colors. There are 58 individual scenes spanning 230 feet (nearly 70 meters) in length and 20 inches (50 cm) in height. Latin text provides context for the imagery. Among the historical events depicted is the appearance of what is now known as Halley's Comet, used here as a harbinger of the coming Norman invasion. Now housed in the Muse de la Tapisserie de Bayeux in Normandy, France, the Bayeux Tapestry is considered a rare example of secular Romanesque art, similar in its narrative style to a cartoon strip. Indeed, cartoonist Scott McCloud used it as an example of this kind of sequential narrative in his 1994 book, Understanding Comics. Parts of the tapestry have been featured in the opening credits of several films as well as the S2 opening credits of House of the Dragon, which incorporated an animated sequence in embroidery inspired by the Bayeux Tapestry.Seats of power The Bayeux Tapestry, showing King Harold riding to Bosham, where he attends church and feasts in a hall, before departing for France. Newcastle University Holy Trinity Church, Bosham, looking east. Newcastle University Part of the garden ruin at Bosham, confirmed as a medieval building by recent research. Newcastle University Holy Trinity Church, Bosham, looking east. Newcastle University According to Creighton and his co-authors, there has been quite a lot of research on castles, which dominated aristocratic sites in England after the Norman Conquest. That event "persists as a deep schism that continues to be seen as the watershed moment after which elites finally tapped into the European mainstream of castle construction," they wrote. The study of residences (or "lordly enclaves") has been more peripheral, yet the authors argue that up until 1066, aristocrats and rulers like King Harold invested heavily in residences, often co-located with churches and chapels. The "Where Power Lies" project employed a wide range of research methodologyincluding perusing old maps and records, a re-analysis of past excavations, geophysics, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and photogrammatic modelingto define the signatures of such enclaves and map them into a single geographic information database (GIS). The project has identified seven such "lordly centers," two of which are discussed in the current paper: an early medieval enclosure at Hornby in North Yorkshire and Bosham in West Sussex. It has long been suspected that one particular manor house in Bosham (now a private residence) stands on the site of what was once King Harold's residence. Per the authors, the original residence was clearly connected with Holy Trinity Church just to the south, parts of which date back to the 11th century, as evidenced by the posthole remains of what was once a bridge or causeway. More evidence can be found in a structure known as the "garden ruin," little of which survives above groundand even that was heavily overgrown. GPR data showed buried features that would have been the eastern wall of King Harold's lordly enclave. The biggest clue was the discovery in 2006 of a latrine within the remains of a large timber building. Its significance was not recognized at the time, but archaeologists have since determined that high-status homes began integrating latrines in the 10th century, so the structure was most likely part of King Harold's residence. Co-author Duncan Wright of Newcastle University believes this "Anglo-Saxon en suite," along with all the other evidence, proves "beyond all reasonable doubt that we have here the location of Harold Godwinson's private power center, the one famously depicted on the Bayeux Tapestry."DOI: The Antiquaries Journal, 2025. 10.1017/S0003581524000350 (About DOIs).Jennifer OuelletteSenior WriterJennifer OuelletteSenior Writer Jennifer is a senior writer at Ars Technica with a particular focus on where science meets culture, covering everything from physics and related interdisciplinary topics to her favorite films and TV series. She felt a duty to educate herself to help her students, she told Business Insider. Our mindset plays a key role in what we eat, she learned, which motivated her to do a doctorate in clinical psychology. She has now been a qualified clinical psychologist for five years and a registered dietitian for 10. Supatra Tovar was a pilates instructor who tried lots of fad diets, but found they didn't work. Supatra Tovar "I realized fad diets just don't work," she said. "They are designed to give us false hope that they might actually work in order to get our money."Her training taught her how to eat nutritious food and maintain a healthy weight. At 52, she can "really love and enjoy food" and has never felt better about herself, she said.Tovar is part of a wave of people ditching fad diets that give unsustainable results. Consuming enough protein and mindful eating are more popular today, according to a 2024 report by the International Food Information Council.Tovar shared some of the changes she made to unlearn diet culture with Business Insider.Unfollow social media accounts that make you feel bad about yourself Tovar changed her mindset about food after becoming a registered dietitian and clinical psychologist. Supatra Tovar "First, you have to depopulate your social media feed from all of the content that is designed to make you feel terrible about yourself. And then repopulate it with stuff that makes you feel good," she said. "For me, that's puppies and kittens and Kevin Bacon singing to his goats on his farm."In a 2023 study published in the journal Frontiers in Psychology, researchers, 226 participants, aged 18 to 40, completed an online survey that suggested viewing pictures of people who fit stereotypical beauty standards on Instagram was linked to a lower mood and dissatisfaction with their bodies.Anchor new habits to old onesPeople often think they have to take drastic action to change their lives, Tovar said. But small changes to our behavior can make a big difference, because they are sustainable.Tovar recommended adding a new habit to an existing "anchoring behavior." For example, she made her daily coffee an "anchor" for 20 minutes of exercise. This chimes with what clinical psychologist Kimberly M. Daniels previously told BI: making one or twosmall changes to your dietat a time is less overwhelming and, therefore, more sustainable than adopting an entirely new one.Eat slowly"It takes about 20 minutes for the brain to register the presence of food in our stomach," Tovar said.Eating slower at mealtimes can allow you to monitor how full you are, so you don't over or undereat, she said.Sitting with others can also help because eating communally encourages us to have conversations and eat more slowly, she said. Another tip is to take a breakDon't vilify foods especially carbohydratesDiet culture labels certain foods as "unhealthy," so people can feel guilty when they eat them. But feeling as though you are being denied foods you enjoy can make it harder to follow a nutritious diet long-term.Carbohydrates, in particular, are commonly vilified as fattening when they are actually "our best friend," she said.Carbs are our brains' preferred energy source, and aren't any more fattening than other micronutrients (fat and protein). Fat loss comes from eating fewer calories without needing to cut out an entire group of micronutrients."Your body absolutely adores natural carbohydrates fruits and vegetables, whole grains, beans, legumes, all of them," Tovar said.

Hemant PatilText description provided by the architects. Nestled on a 380 sqm plot in Nhavi Sandas, a riverside village with deep agricultural roots. Historically, the village was dotted with brick and stone courtyard homes, locally called Wada, but as time passed, these were replaced with modern structures that were less sustainable, energy-intensive, and poorly suited to the local climate. This project aspires to reconnect with that timeless charm, adapting traditional forms to meet modern lifestyles.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture!Inspired by the spatial arrangement of Wada houses, this design integrates a central courtyard and verandah that serves as the heart of the home. It divides the home into public and private spaces while enhancing natural light and ventilation across 2 bedrooms, a living area, a dining, and a kitchen. Designed with a hidden entrance for a sense of discovery, the entrance is subtly integrated into the overall building form, leading directly into a central verandah and courtyard. On one side, the open living, dining, and kitchen areas are arranged to maximize social interaction, while on the other side, two bedrooms and a toilet provide a more private retreat.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! In this design, circulation is reimagined as a semi-outdoor transition space in the form of a verandah, seamlessly linking rooms with nature, optimizing spatial flow, utilizing space efficiently, and enhancing climate responsiveness, all while maintaining the functionality of the design.Save this picture!Save this picture!Save this picture! The house's exterior presents a bold, monolithic form, rooted in the traditional Wada aesthetic, where a solid stone base protects the brick structure above. Reinterpreting this, the design uses raw concrete as a strong foundation, with brickwork above to celebrate materiality and geometric simplicity. Small courtyards with planters along the boundary enhance cross-ventilation, contributing to privacy and a calming, green atmosphere. Inside, light filled interiors in fresh white tones, paired with wooden furniture and black basalt flooring create a serene and introspective ambiance.Save this picture!Ultimately, the design of this house is a sincere effort to bring the living spaces closer to nature while harmoniously blending traditional roots with modern-day living needs.Save this picture!Project gallerySee allShow lessAbout this officeStudio PPBAOfficePublished on January 29, 2025Cite: "Verandah House / Studio PPBA" 29 Jan 2025.
