• Beautiful River Water Simulation Set Up in Houdini
    cgshares.com
When we talk about water simulations, you usually dont need to wonder what software was used to reach the gorgeous result: while there are others capable of the task, Houdini is definitely the most popular program for liquid magic, and a 3D artist known as Vishnu S proves it once again. In his latest project, he demonstrated the running waters of a river set in some fantasy world, if the horned skull is anything to go by. The final result was rendered with Mantra, with one 720p frame taking an hour.80 Level is the best place if you love water simulations: Houdini waves, LiquiGen rivers, experiments in Maya, and more works of art are available for your enjoyment. From Caesars funeral pyre to plants swaying in the wind and CG characters, a kilometer of rapids demanding a petabyte of storage, and a fully CG water-filled silo featuring wet apes and underwater action, the FX simulations in the fourth installment of the Planet of the Apes reboot series, and the tenth film in total were truly monumental. In Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, out of 1,520 shots, only 38 were without visual effects, and 33 minutes of the film were entirely digital. Pushing the boundaries of performance capture, creature simulations, and effects, more than 1,000 Wt FX team members contributed to the film over the span of 18 months. Wt FX shared a series of breakdowns for the film, offering a behind-the-scenes glimpse of how motion capture performances were enhanced by animators and revealing the process behind lighting, compositing, and much more:Issue #27 of Befores & Afters magazine delves into the visual effects of Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes and covers the build, animation, simulation, and final steps involved. In the film, Raka, Noa, and Mae face off against Proximus muscle at a river crossing. The FX simulations for that sequence required 1.2 petabytes (1.2 billion megabytes) of disk space. To create the scene, animation began with the original performance capture, some of which was filmed on partial sets featuring flowing water.Although Wt FX did extensive R&D for Avatar: The Way of Water to develop its Loki state machine for coupled fluid simulations, the river sequence in Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes presented unique challenges. Specifically, the water was nasty, sediment-filled, dirt and debris-type, with much surface foam, adding complexity to the simulation.Another challenge was simulating complex fur in its wet state. Wts approach involved placing the digital character in water, running a simulation to see how the fur reacted, and then creating a custom groom for when he is wet. This technique helped establish the distinctive parted hair look on Rakas arm and body, shaped by the pressure of the rushing water.Read the full article here and join our80 Level Talent platformand ournew Discord server, follow us onInstagram,Twitter,LinkedIn,Telegram,TikTok, andThreads, where we share breakdowns, the latest news, awesome artworks, and more.Source link The post See How Wt FX Created Epic VFX For Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes appeared first on CG SHARES.

Dragon Quest is one of the most popular Japanese video game series of all time, so it's no surprise that its inspired several anime and manga spin-offs. While these have rarely been released outside of Japan, one of the classic '90s Dragon Quest manga series is finally getting an official English release later this year with Dragon Quest: The Mark of Erdrick Volume One. The series is notable for following the events of one of the most beloved entries in the video game series, Dragon Quest 3, and follows an all-new party of companions. If you've recently wrapped up the Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake and are looking to experience more stories set in that world, you can preorder Dragon Quest: The Mark of Erdrick Volume One for $25 ahead of its September 23 release. • Robe of the Arcane Cheater treasure map location and solution in Avowed
    www.polygon.com
Robe of the Arcane Cheater is one of the trickier treasure maps in Avowed. This Shatterscarp map points out a specific landmark tucked away in a nondescript landscape thats easy to miss unless youre keen on picking up bounty quests.Making matters worse, the map and its treasure are in dangerous locations as well, though some careful sneaking can get you through without much issue, and the reward is an essential piece of kit for wizards. Youll pick it up just as you start unlocking higher-level spells that cost more essence. This Avowed guide shows where to find the Robe of the Arcane Cheater treasure map, where the treasure is hidden, and how to get it safely.Where to find Robe of the Arcane Cheater treasure mapYou can purchase Robe of the Archane Cheater for 1,680 skeyt from a merchant who calls her stall The Thrifty Pig. Shes in a cave at the eastern end of Deadfall, one thats right off the road leading to Naku Kubel and easy to miss, what with the deadly wraiths who like to chase you down that path. Its a steep asking price, but if you want to save your money for higher-tier equipment, Avowed will count this treasure map quest as complete if you find the goods without buying the map.Robe of the Arcane Cheater location solutionThe map shows you a bunch of rocks and some mushrooms, which is basically all of Shatterscarp, though there are two, highly specific clues: The treasure is in a cave at the top of two little mushroom towers, and the towers are in a depression of some kind. That depression is a dried-up lake, one of many in Shatterscarps Ancient Lakebed. Its also where Kukae Maka, the subject of one of Thirdborns bounties, is, along with several other Dreamthrall enemies. Its not an easy fight if youve just arrived in the region, but you can avoid it by ignoring them completely and walking up the incline to the left of the lakebed.Stick to the cliff edge, and ignore or fight the Xaurips as you see fit. Drop down onto a little ledge behind a large, flowering mushroom, turn around, and youll see the small cavern with the treasure inside. That treasure is the Robes of Surpassing Brilliance armor, a tier-three piece thats already been upgraded twice.Robe of the Arcane Cheater rewardThe Robes of Surpassing Brilliance set is perfect for the spells youre probably casting at this point in Avowed, ones with high essence cost that affect a broad area. • This twist on the survival crafter genre lets you play as a silly little squirrel
    www.polygon.com
Countless games let you play as a normal, bipedal person; far fewer games let you play as a critter. Stray and Little Kitty, Big City have both made strides in adorable animal protagonists, but an upcoming indie game makes the ambitious choice of putting you in the furry, grasping feet of the humble squirrel. Squirreled Away is a charming, colorful crafting platformer that removes the stresses of the survival genre in favor of the simple joy of washing your little paws, climbing a tree, and chatting with your neighbors. While Squirreled Away has the trappings of the survival genre, in that you must accumulate materials and build a home, there are no dangers or stresses except perhaps for an irritable pitbull. Instead, the challenge comes in platforming and parkouring across trees, gathering the resources you need for the perfect little treetop home. Developer Far Seas calls it a craft-and-thrive adventure, and thats a fun twist on a very saturated genre. Our squirrel protagonist isnt just building up their home solo; they have an assortment of adorable animal friends, offering their own stories and quests. I chatted with some other squirrels, befriended a turtle, and had a polite chat with a seagull. Squirreled Away fits into the cozy genre; every aspect of the game is carefully crafted to invoke comfort and appeal.Theres also the option for co-op play, which allows a group of four squirrels to build their own woodland empire. While youre playing as a little squirrel, the developers have made some accuracy concessions to provide for a better exploration experience. For instance, Im pretty sure squirrels are not capable of industry, but this little guy has figured out how to craft tiny tools. Those become more elaborate as the game progresses, including a set of wings that allows you to glide from treetop to treetop in style.Right now, a demo for Squirreled Away is available on Steam, so players have the chance to tour the game. There is no release date yet, but Ill be keeping an eye on this title. I have grown tired of cutting down trees and smashing rocks for basic building supplies in other games, which all ask me to play as a bipedal person with thumbs. Getting to be a quick little squirrel is a novel experience, and I enjoyed the chance to scale some trees and nibble upon an acorn.

  • The end of design certainty
    uxdesign.cc
Why AI forces us to embrace emergence instead of clinging to control and understandingMade by Patrick Morgan with MidjourneyAnthropic CEO Dario Amodeis recent podcast with Lex Fridman caught my attention with an observation that keeps replaying in my mind. Even as his team works to understand and interpret AI models, he acknowledged a surprising truth:Theres no reason why [AI models] should be designed for us to understand them, right? Theyre designed to operate, theyre designed to work. Just like the human brain or human biochemistry. Theyre not designed for a human to open up the hatch, look inside and understand them. This statement gave me pause. It challenges something deeply ingrained from the last generation of software design: the idea that we must fully understand how something works in order to consider it a valid solution. For years, weve doubled down on the belief that data-driven design can eliminate uncertainty. The idea is that to make something effective, we first have to deconstruct it, grasp every nuance, and then carefully engineer it into existence. But theres an irony here: as weve become more obsessed with data-driven certainty, weve invented systems that operate beyond our ability to fully analyze or predict. AI models demonstrate that sometimes the most powerful solutions emerge from patterns we can observe but not fullyexplain.AI flips the script. It wasnt designed for human comprehensionit was designed to work. Understanding, if it comes at all, is often after the fact, something we piece together after we see that the system works. And that realization has forced me to rethink my assumptions about design and invention for this newera.Rethinking solutions in search of problemsTraditional design wisdom views solutions in search of problems as a criticism. It runs counter to everything were taught about being problem-focused and user-centered. But as Anthropics head of product design Joel Lewenstein observed in a recent Dive Club podcast with Michael Riddering: Ive come to see solutions in search of a problem as not a dirty word at all as long as you just lean into it and state your assumptions, saying look, theres the germ of something here and were going to exploreit. This isnt about abandoning user-centered designits about recognizing that with AI, understanding often emerges through exploration. The technologys capabilities are so novel that even those working on the frontier dont know whats possible until they seeit. This shift isnt limited to Anthropic, its happening across leading AI companies. Inspired by a recent conversation with Perplexitys head of design Henry Modisett, Linear CEO Karri Saarinen commented, At Perplexity they start projects by exploring LLM capabilities with very simple prototypes, even with just a command-line implementation. Only once theres proof that the idea can work consistently, and that they can bend it to do what they want, do they start designing the experience. Normally, you start with design to explore possibilities, and the tech follows. But in this domain, or this new era of software, LLM/AI is the tool for exploration, and design comesafter.Invention comes before understandingHistorically, software design has followed a structured, step-by-step approachone where every phase is carefully planned to produce a predictable outcome.Understand the problemdeeply.Define a precise solution.Craft an experience that is intentional and predictable.Ship a finished product that behaves exactly as expected. But this isnt how many of the most transformative inventions have come about. If you look at breakthroughs across history, the process is always messy and often reversed:Have an intentan idea of what youre trying toachieve.Experiment, iterate, and push forward without muchclarity.Uncover an unexpected breakthroughit works, but not how youthought. You study the breakthrough, refine it, and later figure out why itworks. This pattern of discovery before understanding runs deep. Alexander Fleming didnt intend to discover penicillinhe noticed something unexpected in his experiment and followed the thread. The steam engine was a product of tinkering; Newcomen and Watt refined working models decades before scientists understood the laws of thermodynamics that made them possible. Early radio pioneers transmitted signals across great distances without fully understanding the physics of electromagnetic waves. And the use of anesthesia in surgery revolutionized medicine long before scientists figured out its precise mechanism ofaction.AI amplifies this historical patternAI doesnt just follow this patternit speeds itup.Traditional software is deterministic; AI is probabilistic. It doesnt follow rigid rulesit generates outputs based on patterns and likelihoods we can observe but not fully predict. The technology itself resists complete upfront understanding. The challenge is that many designers, engineers, and product teams are still trying to apply legacy design methodologies to a technology that simply doesnt work that way. AI doesnt respect our craving for certainty. It doesnt wait for us to fully understand it before showing results. And the more we try to force it into rigid, explainable, deterministic workflows, the more we suffocate its potential. Why design struggles to let gobut why itshouldThis has forced me to confront my own biases. Ive spent a decade designing software, and the instinct to make things fully understood before they exist is deeply ingrained. Its particularly rooted in the culture of UX designthis idea that we cant build effectively unless we first have a full grasp of what weremaking.AI challenges this instinct and asks us to revise our beliefs. It requires us to lean into the ambiguity, to design before we fully understand, and to shape the raw materials of generative outputs as useful options emerge. As Lewenstein notes, You can talk about AI and you can write about AI, but theres something just so powerful about seeing a working prototype and feeling the dynamic, stochastic nature of it seeing a website get rendered in real time, iterating on it and seeing it change in front of youits just magical. Understanding comes through doing, through making something tangible that we can respond to andrefine.Confronting this tension reminds me of the Daoist concept of Wu Wei, often translated as effortless action or without force. Its the idea that instead of rigidly trying to control every element of a process, we should move with the natural flow of thingsguiding and shaping, rather than imposing. Wu Wei isnt passivity; its about working with forces rather than against them. In AI design, this means crafting interactions where users guide and shape outcomes, rather than micromanaging every detail. Its like how a surfer harnesses a waves energy rather than trying to control theocean.Design must guide, notcontrolSo what does it look like to design without force? Instead of suppressing the unknown, we embrace it as part of theprocess. We create affordances, not strict controls: building interfaces that guide behavior rather than dictate it. Instead of trying to expose every parameter, we need interfaces that let users navigate AI while embracing its variability. We prioritize steerability over explainability: giving users meaningful, intuitive ways to shape AIs behavior without needing to understand its internals. The goal isnt to make the black box transparent, but to make it controllable at the right level of abstraction. We embrace emergence: designing systems that adapt and evolve, rather than ones that are locked into rigid, pre-defined behaviors. This means creating spaces where unexpected capabilities can surface and be refined throughuse. This doesnt mean that understanding is unimportant. But it does mean we should be wary of overprioritizing upfront understanding at the cost of progress. AI is teaching us that function canand often mustprecede full comprehension. And as designers, builders, and creative thinkers, we need to get more comfortable working in thatspace. If this makes you uncomfortablegood. It means youre seeing the shift. But if it excites youwell, my friend, youre right where you need tobe. What might become possible if you embrace emergence instead of clinging tocontrol?Embracing theunknownThis shift is much bigger than a throwaway line on a podcast. Its a reframe for how we approach design and invention in this new age. For decades, the software business has trained us to believe that predictability, explainability, and control are the highest ideals. But many of the most powerful things in the worldour brains, ecosystems, markets, and now AI modelsdont operate thatway. If youre designing with AI, start experimenting before you demand clarity. Try tinkering with the raw materials first, then layering on design afterwardlike Perplexity does. Embrace the unknown as a creativetool. As we build in this new era, we need to ask ourselves: what happens when we stop forcing things to fit our desire for immediate understanding? What becomes possible when we embrace discovery as a design principle? And how do we shape these new, emergent systems in ways that are powerful, safe, and genuinely creative? We may not fully understand AI yet. But if history tells us anything, that might be exactly where we need tobe.Patrick Morgan is the founder of Unknown Arts. If you enjoyed this post, subscribe to his newsletter or follow him on social media: X, LinkedIn, Bluesky. The end of design certainty was originally published in UX Collective on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

  • The Best Way to Clean Your Makeup Brushes
    lifehacker.com
We may earn a commission from links on this page.Over the years, I've accumulated dozens of makeup brushes, which means Ive also spent far too much time cleaning them. Dirty brushes can screw up your glam, but can also cause breakouts and distribute bacteria and whatever else lurks in your makeup bag across your skin. In worst-case scenarios, you could even get an infection. Cleaning them regularlyevery seven to 10 daysis important, but so, too, is doing it right. Some cleaning methods are ineffective and others are downright bad for the brush. Here's what to know about cleaning not only your brushes, but your sponges. How I clean my makeup brushesThere are loads of tutorials all over TikTok, YouTube, and Instagram, showing how influencers and makeup gurus clean their brushes, but a lot of them are full of bad information. For instance, using oil is a no-no; its extremely difficult to remove from bristles, which can make the brushes less effective and cause breakouts on certain skin types. Ive also seen loads of videos where users are fully submerging their brush heads in soapy water. Again, no: Eventually, that can damage the glue, too.I am fortunate enough to be friends with a real-life professional makeup artist and model, Rachel DeFluri, and for years, I have followed her advice instead of tips from self-proclaimed online gurus. First, I start with a basic rinse to get the most obvious, external makeup off, filling a small bowl with micellar water and swirl each brush tip around in there. Ever since DeFluri told me to use micellar water to clean makeup brushes, I've loved it because, just as it somehow removes makeup from your skin with ease, it does the same thing herevery gently and easily. If you dont have any, just run the brush tips under a faucet. Regular water will take a little longer, but the powders and liquids on the outer parts of the brush will eventually come off, leaving you to deal with the stuff that's really deep inside.DeFluri adds that micellar water can be used if you're in a rush and don't have time for any other steps: "Simply soak a cotton pad or towel with micellar water and wipe your brushes clean. While this wont fully disinfect, its a great option for spot cleaning between deep washes." She also points out that if you are in a hurry and are sure your brushes are made of synthetic fibers, you can do this same technique with 70% isopropyl alcohol by applying it to a pad or rag and gently running it over the brush head. She cautions that while it "breaks down stubborn product buildup and kills bacteria on contact" and is great for disinfecting, "it can be drying over time, so use it sparingly." Only swirl the tips so the glue inside the brush doesn't get wet. At the end, your micellar water should look dirty, like the picture on the right. Credit: Lindsey Ellefson If you're not in a rush and want to do a full deep-clean, you move on to the next step. I refill that same bowl with plain, clean water and add a few drops of gentle dish soap (though you can also use baby shampoo). Avoid using anything else, like hand soap. Some bloggers have recommended Dove body wash in the past, too, but that contains some conditioning agents that can, over time, coat your bristles with a film. Our goal here is to strip everything from the bristles, not add anything to them, so plain dish soap is your best bet. The gentler and plainer, the better. Plus, according to DeFluri, it works the same whether you're cleaning synthetic or natural bristles, so you don't have to play any guessing games. Swirl your brush tips in there again, this time massaging them with your hands to scrub them. Any time the water gets too dirty, toss it and refill the bowl. Eventually, each brush will stop releasing powders and liquids and, when run back under the faucet, the water coming from them will be clear.A lot of influencers recommend using a bumpy silicone mat as a scrubber during the cleaning process, but those are specialty products that arent really necessary. Theyre convenient, yes, but run the spectrum of costliness ($5 for a simple one at Ulta, $37 for the big one on Amazon) and dont do much more than a good massage with your fingers can do. Their greatest benefit is that, by running your brushes over them, you get a lot of water out, but you can do that yourself by gently squeezing the bristles over your cleaning bowl or sink. My little hack is that I use my silicone dish sponge, the one I rave about for general cleaning, and it functions just as well as the specialty mats I've tried, plus I can use it for my dishes and cleaning the kitchen. Best of all, this multi-purpose wonder comes in a two-pack for just $9. Massage the product out of each brush with a mat or by hand, then carefully lay them out to dry. Credit: Lindsey Ellefson When the water runs perfectly clear through them, its time to fully dry your brushes. Lay them flat on a paper towel or a microfiber cloth. (I recommend the cloth because you'll actually need about seven paper towels stacked up to catch all the water that comes out over time.) A tip DeFluri is really serious about is this one: Dont splay the bristles out unnaturally to dry them because theyll dry that way and be difficult to use afterward. Instead, gently shape the bristles back into whatever shape they were before and let them air dry. I usually leave mine at least overnight and come back a few times to flip them over. Whatever you do, do not dry them upright in a container; this will affect the glue on the bristles, as the water will run down. You can even dry them while they hang upside down, but I don't have the space or mechanics necessary for that. If you figure out a way to affix a bunch of handles so the brushes are airborne, you let me know. Drying them flat is perfectly fine, but rotating them periodically so the bristles dont flatten on one side is a smart move. How to clean a makeup spongeMakeup sponges, which had a popularity boom around 2016 but are still a staple in most makeup kits, are much easier to clean than brushes, since you can fully submerge them in water with no problem. You can do it in micellar water first and then switch to your soap-and-water mixture, or just go straight to the soap and water. (A lot of makeup sponge brands sell their own cleanser, but baby shampoo is just as good.)Submerge the sponge and massage it with your hands, squishing it around until you see makeup start to come out into the water. If its really, really dirty, let it sit in that soapy water for 10 minutes or so. Take it out and put some soap directly onto the wet sponge, working it into a lather. Run the sponge under a faucet to rinse it and dont stop until the water runs clear. To dry the sponge, prop it up, if you can, and let it air dry. It can air dry flat, but youll want to turn it over a few times. Let it dry overnight to make sure there are no wet spots deep inside that could get mildewy. When you think its dry, give it a good squeeze to make sure you dont feel any dampness. Dont put it back in the drawer or its container until its fully dry.
