• Three Good Reasons To Wait For Googles Pixel 9a
    www.forbes.com
2024's Google Pixel 8aEwan SpenceLaunching in the second quarter of 2025, Google's Pixel 9a will be the fifth smartphone in the Pixel 9 family and the first to target the mid-range market. With an expected starting price of $499 for the 128 GB model, it will be one of the higher-priced models on option, but the latest leaked details highlight the key decisions that will make the 9a one of the most attractive handsets in this space. The Pixel 9a Dual CameraThe rear camera is set to come with two lenses; a main 48-megapixel sensor and an ultrawide 13-megapixel in support. Curiously, this drops down from the 64-megapixel sensor of the Pixel 8a. How this will impact the resulting shots will be one of the areas that reviewers will focus on. It will help with the size of the main camera, reducing the camera island from the raised strip in the previous design language to something much more subtle. It will not be entirely flat and flush but smoother and easier on the pocket. With the recent launch of Apple's iPhone 16e, there will be a temptation to put the 16e and the 9a in a head-to-head comparison. Apple's phone starts at $599 and conspicuously comes with a single-lensed main camera. The Pixel 9a has both an immediate visual advantage and one that will likely carry over into the resulting images. The Pixel 9a And Gemini AIGoogle announced the Pixel 8 family as the first AI Smartphones when they were launched in Oct. 2023. That handed Google specifically, and Android in general, the lead in generative artificial intelligence on mobile devices. It's a lead that has been built upon by Google with its Gemini AI suite and augmented by the AI efforts of its partners. The Pixel 9a won't be the first mid-range Android smartphone to bring the second-generation Android AI to market, but it will be one of the first to have the marketing power of Google and its "Say Hi Gemini" campaign. The Pixel 9a will come with the Google-designed Tensor G4 chipset, matching the more expensive flagship Pixel 9 handsets. While it is not tuned for maximum performance, it is tailored towards on-device AI processing, both with dedicated hardware and tight integration with software. The Pixel 9a will come with the same processor potential as the more expensive Pixels, although there may be a speed bump given the smaller 8 GB of RAM it will be equipped with. The Pixel 9a Battery LifeGoogle is increasing the battery capacity of the 9a over the 8a by nearly fifteen percent, from 4492 mAh to 5100 mAh. I wonder if part of the reason for trimming back on the main camera lens is to increase the internal volume for the larger battery. Coupled with the increased efficiency of the G4 chipset, the Pixel 9a's endurance should significantly increase. It's worth noting that the Pixel 9a display is growing, from 6.1 inches on the Pixel 8a to 6.3 inches on the 9a, again potentially offering more internal volume for the battery. The Pixel 9as Balance PointThe Pixel A series has always sought to balance pricing needs against potential performance. If last year's Pixel 8a was all about introducing Google's Gemini AI into the mid-range, then the 9a is about working smarter for longer. The focus on battery life and endurance is a practical benefit easily sold to consumers who may be burned out with nothing but AI in the marketing.Google brought AI into the smartphone conversation. With the Pixel 9a it may highlight what comes next. Now read how Apple is promoting the iPhone 16e, the clear competitor to the Pixel 9a...

  • Scientists discover way to revive batteries by injecting fresh lithium
    www.techspot.com
In brief: If you're someone who uses gadgets until every drop of life has been squeezed out of them, then this battery tech might be right up your alley. A Chinese research team has devised a clever way to effectively give depleted batteries a new lease of life by replenishing their lithium supply. The only catch is that, for now, it will likely only be practical for industrial-scale applications such as grid energy storage systems. First, some context on why batteries degrade. Lithium-ion battery aging is primarily influenced by the growth of the Solid Electrolyte Interphase (SEI) layer on the anode, which consumes lithium ions and increases resistance. Over time, this, along with electrode degradation and electrolyte breakdown, reduces the battery's capacity. The usual solution is to replace the battery. However, researchers have investigated a clever alternative: injecting fresh lithium directly into the depleted cells to make up for what was lost over time.To achieve this feat, they used AI and organic electrochemistry to create a special lithium-containing compound that releases its lithium payload when hit with the right voltage conditions inside a battery. Another benefit is that the reaction produces gaseous byproducts that can easily vent out, clearing the way for the new lithium.Using this technique, the researchers were able to almost completely restore the capacity of a heavily degraded lithium iron phosphate battery that had lost 15% of its charge. Overall, they believe that lithium-ion batteries could potentially extend their lifespan to 12,000 60,000 cycles before reaching their limit. There are a few caveats here, though. For one, the re-lithiation process requires specially designed batteries that allow pumping in the lithium slurry. This requires additional space and increases complexity compared to a standard sealed unit. // Related StoriesIt's also unclear if all this would work as well on the lithium-ion batteries used in consumer devices like phones and laptops, which rely on different lithium chemistries that may not work as well using this approach.Still, for large-scale utility storage installations where maximizing the return on costly battery packs is essential, having a lithium replenishment option could not only reduce costs but also benefit the environment. The complete findings can be found in the scientific journal Nature.

Darvis wants to resurrect his wife, who was murdered because of his job.Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves blends action with comedy and fantasy, making it a great watch for the entire family. While it didnt perform amazingly well at the box office, the heist film has received great reviews. Our reviewer calls it a breath of fresh air, with a likable cast of heroes and a clever and entertaining screenplay. Its a must-watch, especially for those who will pick up on the D&D references, but entertaining even for those who dont know a thing about the game.Stream Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves on Amazon Prime Video.Ted (2012)Universal PicturesNeed a good laugh this month? The hilarious fantasy comedy Tedis leaving Amazon Prime Video, including both the rated and unrated versions. Indeed, there needs to be two because Ted takes raunchy humor to another level. The movie stars Mark Wahlberg as John Bennett, an aimless slacker who spends his days hanging out with Ted (voiced by Seth MacFarlane), his stuffed animal bear toy that came to life when he was eight. Johns girlfriend Lori (Mila Kunis) wishes he would make something of his life and is reluctant to move forward with the relationship unless Ted moves out.Ted follows Johns efforts to help Ted get on his feet alone, despite his own inability to let go of his furry bestie. The film swirls into a plot whereby an obsessed stalker named Donny (Giovanni Ribisi) kidnaps Ted in hopes of claiming him as his own. Now, more than a decade later, it still cuts deep whenever you watch.Stream American Sniper on Amazon Prime Video. The Blues Brothers (1980)Universal PicturesA perfect watch as you continue the celebrations of Saturday Night Lives 50th anniversarythis year, The Blues Brothers is one of the first movies born from an SNL sketch. As pointed out in the documentary Ladies & Gentleman50 Years of SNL Music, the shows creator Lorne Michaels didnt initially approve of the sketch idea, finding it unfunny. By happenstance, the Blues Brothers characters made it on air during a gap in timing during the live episode, and they became a massive sensation. This movie, which stars the late John Belushi and Dan Aykroyd as Jake and Elwood Blues, respectively, tells the story of their journey to prevent the orphanage where they grew up from closing down. Naturally, this involves raising money through musical performance, but its easier said than done with several nefarious individuals including a group of neo-Nazis, a country band, and the police chasing them to settle scores. Today, The Blues Brothers is a cult classic; the characters are icons, and the sketch is one of the most memorable ever from SNL.Stream The Blues Brothers on Amazon Prime Video. The Lego Movie (2014)Warner Bros. PicturesIt seemed almost ridiculous to consider making a movie based on a set of buildable toy bricks, but the enduring nature of Lego toys alongside the fantastic voice cast, compelling story, live-action segments, and, of course, that catchy Everything is Awesome tune, and The Lego Movie is tough to resist. The central character is Emmet Brickowski (Chris Pratt), a simple minifigure who mostly fades into the background in his community. But when theres the threat of the evil businessman Lord Business (Will Ferrell) gluing together everything in their world so they can no longer build, Emmet finds a courage and leadership spirit he didnt know he had.The Lego Movie is so clever, so sweet; its the type of film you want to watch again and again with the kids, and, lets face it, even without. Spawning a sequel and two spinoffs dedicated to Lego Batman (voiced by Will Arnett in a role that has forever tied him to the DC Comics universe) and Lego Ninjago, The Lego Movie is arguably one of the best animated movies ever made.Stream The LEGO Movie on Amazon Prime Video.Editors Recommendations

The bombshell news that Amazon MGM have now taken over creative control of the James Bond franchise has led to plenty of concerns about what that means for Bonds future. For Daniel Craig, though, the last actor to play Bond, it was a moment to pay tribute to the Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, who shepherded Bond to the big screen for more than 60 years. My respect, admiration and love for Barbara and Michael remain constant and undiminished, Craig told Variety. I wish Michael a long, relaxing (and well-deserved) retirement and whatever ventures Barbara goes on to do, I know they will be spectacular and I hope I can be part of them.Recommended VideosBroccoli and Wilson will remain co-owners of the franchise alongside Amazon MGM, but Amazon MGM will now have creative control over the franchises future. Please enable Javascript to view this contentCraig played Bond for 15 years from 2006 to 2021, and there has been speculation ever since about what the future of the franchise might look like. • 3 steps you can take to boost your career
    www.businessinsider.com
It's still early in 2025, so there's still time to elevate your career this year.Workers might consider building their AI skills to stay competitive, one exec told BI.Volunteering and side hustles can also enhance skills, empowerment, and career opportunities. You might not be hitting the gym as much as you were in January, but there's still time to achieve your career goals in 2025.There are a number of steps you can take to level up your work and doing so might be more important than ever. That's because workers tend to hold greater responsibility for the shape of their careers than they did five to 10 years ago when employers often played a bigger role, Lisa Walker, a managing partner at the executive search firm DHR Global, told Business Insider."You have to be vigilant about managing your own career," she said. Here are three ways you can level up your career this year, according to workplace experts.Get better with AISean Barry, the vice president of talent acquisition at Allstate, told BI that workers should try to become more proficient in artificial intelligence. He said it's essential to realize that the technology will put a premium on a new set of skills for many people like how to create an appropriate prompt for generative AI."That is not a skill that anybody talked about two years ago, and it's critically important now," Barry said, adding that people who are better at this will likely do better in their careers. One way to improve your AI skills is simply to use it. Start by trying out chatbotsand seeing what works. It's become a clich to say that AI won't replace you, but someone who knows how to use it will. Yet, there are areas where AI might replace humans, which is why a better understanding ofhow AI workscan be beneficial. That's advice Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has given: If you're worried that AI will take your job, get better with the technology.Kiki Leutner is cofounder of SeeTalent.ai, which is developing tests run by AI that would simulate tasks associated with a job to help the hiring process. She told BI that, traditionally, employers tended to use such tests for more senior roles only where it was worth the money and effort. Or, Leutner said, a company might give a software developer a coding task to measure proficiency.Leutner said Generative AI can let employers test far more job seekers and across a broader range of roles than would otherwise be practical. Plus, she said, AI-run assessments can collect insights that previously were difficult to capture, such as how someone might interact with others.Success in such areas often involves the soft skills employers say they're seeking, and many bosses contend too many workers lack.Share your skills by volunteeringYou might feel too busy at work, yet carving out some time to help others can help you. A study from the University of Oxford found that volunteering proved more effective in boosting worker well-being than other interventions. It's especially beneficial if it involves using your skills to assist others, according to Leila Saad, CEO of Common Impact, a nonprofit that connects companies and their workers with other nonprofits.Saad told BI that many nonprofits lack the resources to meet all of their operational needs. So, when workers with that expertise can help, it benefits both the organization and the worker, she said."It feels good to give back skills you've honed over your entire career," she said. That often trumps something like showing up for a one-off event like painting a school or planting trees, Saad said.Beyond that, she said, workers and their employers can benefit if the employee might develop additional skills through volunteering.Jennifer Schielke, the CEO of the staffing firm Summit Group Solutions and the author of "Leading for Impact," previously told BI that volunteering even after something traumatic like losing a job can help those newly out of work get a sense of perspective."If you have time to volunteer, go do it," she said. "Go get some encouragement by sitting alongside someone who has it worse than you do."Consider starting a side hustleSide hustles get a lot of attention when they're lucrative, yet there can be other benefits. They can be limited to weekend jobs, so workers' weekdays aren't too full. In other cases, side hustles might relieve burnout. They can also make workers feel empowered.Daniel Zhao, the lead economist at Glassdoor, told BI that workers in some industries might feel stuck in their 9-to-5 roles because of lackluster hiring. That might be one reason more workers are picking up side hustles.Zhao pointed to data gathered by Glassdoor and the Harris Poll. In a February 2024 survey of about 1,100 US adults, 39% reported having a side gig. The share was higher among younger workers: Fifty-seven percent of Gen Zers and 48% of millennials reported doing work in addition to their primary roles."Workers are much more willing to experiment nowadays," Zhao said. He pointed to rates of entrepreneurship, which he said "skyrocketed" during the pandemic.Zhao said it's good news that entrepreneurship rates remain elevated following a "fairly weak" 2010s and said it indicates America's entrepreneurial spirit has recovered."Not only is that an opportunity for people to supplement their income on the side, but it also opens up new opportunities, new ideas, new technologies that can potentially boost the economy in the long run," he said.An earlier version of this story appeared on November 30, 2024.Do you have something to share about your career, job search, or something at work? • MrBeast said making his Amazon show 'Beast Games' was 'not a good' financial move: 'I lost tens of millions of dollars'
    www.businessinsider.com
MrBeast has said that making his Amazon show "Beast Games" was "not a good financial decision."The YouTuber real name Jimmy Donaldson made the comments in an appearance on the "Diary Of A CEO" podcast."I lost tens of millions of dollars on that show," Donaldson said.MrBeast said he lost "tens of millions of dollars" making his Prime Video series "Beast Games" as he opened up about his finances during a recent appearance on Steven Bartlett's "Diary Of A CEO" podcast. While "Beast Games," which was released in December, became one of Amazon's biggest series debuts of 2024, MrBeast said making it was "not a good financial decision.""I lost a ton of money filming the show, so that came out of my pocket," the YouTuber real name Jimmy Donaldson said. The 10-episode reality competition sees contestants compete for $5 million cash prizes. It drew more than 50 million viewers in its first 25 days and became Prime Video's most-watched unscripted series ever, Amazon said in January. But that seemingly didn't stop Donaldson from suffering big losses."I lost tens of millions of dollars on that show. I'm an idiot," he told host Bartlett, explaining that just the sets on the first two episodes cost more than $29 million together.Despite his heavy losses, Donaldson who confirmed that the show cost more than $100 million to make in total has no regrets."For me, it was about making season one as good as possible. I can't let the YouTube community down because creators don't have a good rep when it comes to doing stuff on streaming platforms," he said. "If I fail, it's over; no streaming platform is ever gonna touch a YouTuber ever again," he added.Elsewhere in the interview, Donaldson touched on his own finances, telling Bartlett that he had "less than a million dollars" in his bank account."Are you a billionaire?" Bartlett asked the 26-year-old creator, who has more than 365 million subscribers on YouTube."On paper, yeah," Donaldson responded. "But I mean, in my actual bank account, I have less than a million dollars."Donaldson added that while he pays himself a salary, he tries to give himself just enough to cover what he personally spends a month, preferring instead to reinvest his money back into his brand."Money is fuel to grow business," he said. "You find a business that you enjoy that's better for mother nature or Earth or people, and there you go you have a fulfilled life. That's my theory."

  • PlayStation 5 Pro review: Months later and the PS5 Pro is much easier to recommend
    www.dailystar.co.uk
The PS5 Pro is much easier to recommend than it was a few months ago, and it might be worth investing as Sony continues to improve older titles.Tech17:00, 22 Feb 2025PS5 Pro is the most powerful console around, and now it feels like itBack in November, I went hands-on with the PlayStation 5 Pro, Sony's mid-generation refresh of its already-impressive console. We didn't get a console from Sony so I spent a whopping 699 in the name of putting it through its paces. Sadly (both for me, and my bank balance), I felt a little disappointed. The console was great, with double the storage of the base model, and more power thanks to a sizeable GPU bump. But there wasn't anything I could play on it that felt particularly transformative in the same way it felt to boot up Marvel's Spider-Man on the PS4 Pro when that launched. So, what's changed in the last few months? Actually, enough to make the console much, much easier to recommend. Let's unpack.Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 is a true showcase of the PS5 Pro(Image: Warhorse Studios)One of my main issues when I tested the PS5 Pro last year was its frankly odd supported games list.Sony went to great lengths in the console's reveal to show off The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered. It's a gorgeous game, yes, but it also launched in 2020. Then, more recent games like Star Wars Jedi Survivor actually saw worse performance on PS5 Pro.The bad news is that there's still no unified standard of PS5 Pro graphical setting in each game's menu, but those teething issues appear to have been worked out for the most part. Then there are new releases which have PS5 Pro patches included right off the bat. Monster Hunter Wilds will launch with one, while GTA 6 is expected to perform best on PS5 Pro if Rockstar can work their magic.Kingdom Come Deliverance II, one of the early front-runners for Game of the Year, is a great experience on PS5 Pro (that's where we reviewed it), while Path of Exile 2's Early Access version is enhanced, too.Helldivers 2 was a huge success for Sony(Image: Arrowhead Game Studios/PlayStation Publishing LLC)With titles like Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and even Microsoft's own DOOM: The Dark Ages expected to arrive with PS5 Pro functionality, plus huge franchises like Assassin's Creed: Shadows, there's been a huge adoption of the new console's features already.Perhaps just as important is Sony's willingness to go back over its catalog and improve games to make it an easier upgrade option. Just this week, Astro Bot and Helldivers 2, the company's biggest hits of 2024, got PS5 Pro updates. The point is, although some games won't be making the jump (Cyberpunk 2077 felt like a prime candidate), we're a long way from Fortnite being one of the best reasons to upgrade.Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is one of the best-looking games on PS5 Pro(Image: Square Enix Creative)The PS5 Pro is still a very expensive console. 699 is a huge sum whichever way you slice it, but we are at least starting to see smaller discounts of 50 - 60.Is it enough to justify it? No, but it means if you're new to the PlayStation ecosystem you can jump in for the same price as before and at least have enough for a digital game. I'm still not convinced ditching the disc drive was the way to go, though. I don't have any physical games, save for a couple of Collector's Editions, but I feel the value proposition would have been an easier sell if players of launch model PS5s didn't feel like they were losing something for 699 and the stand could definitely have been thrown in the box, Sony.Xbox is being outsold by PS5 already(Image: AFP via Getty Images)Still, I'm convinced the PS5 Pro is about to come into its own. Not only for those games we mentioned earlier, but by offering something Microsoft once took great pleasure in providing the most powerful console. With Xbox seemingly focused on the next generation of consoles, PlayStation 5 Pro essentially runs unopposed. Sure, the PS5 might be fractionally less powerful than the Series X (at least on paper), but the PS5 Pro has that top spot locked in and probably will do for some time yet.Article continues belowOn a personal level, it means that the majority of gaming reviews you read on this very site will have a "reviewed on PS5 Pro" affixed to the bottom, and that's something that people notice. No console should cost 699, but with that caveat, there's no better home console around right now than the PlayStation 5 Pro. Its technical chops will likely become more apparent in the coming months and years, but it's finally easy to recommend. For the latest breaking news and stories from across the globe from the Daily Star, sign up for our newsletters.

  • Is Avatar Ready to Be a Modern Blockbuster Franchise?
    gizmodo.com
This week marks the 20th anniversary ofAvatar: The Last Airbender,Nickelodeons action-fantasy anime that became one of the networks biggest shows back in the day. And what better way to celebrate a momentous occasion than to finally reveal a new showSeven Havens,a 2D series with a two-season greenlight and involvement from franchise co-creators Michael DiMartino and Bryan Konietzko. Like the previous shows, Havens will center on another young Avatar coming into their own, in this case a young Earthbender who finds herself inheriting a stained mantle after a cataclysm involving her predecessor Korra has made people wary of anyone with the title. Weve known for a few years now that Paramount would very much like to keep Avatargoing as a multimedia franchise. Generally, the franchise never really went away, even as the gap between series was sizable: along with Netflixs separate (but ongoing) live-action remake, countless comics and graphic novels have covered what happened next for Aang, Korra, and their friends; video games of questionable quality have come out on a semi-consistent basis (with a more substantial one on the horizon); and thereve been a number of YA books starring prominent Avatars of the past like Kyoshi and Yangchen. But Seven Havenscarries a different weight behind it as one of the franchises first projects to come from Avatar Studios. When this and the Aang-focused animated moviethe first of three films to comerelease, well see if Avatarsgot what it takes to keep up with the turbulent, franchise-heavy times of our current pop culture era. Nickelodeon When the original Last Airbenderseries premiered February 21, 2005, there wasnt really anything like it on western TV, to say nothing of Nicks primarily comedy-focused lineup back then. For much of its then-young audience, its anime art style and focus on action and storytelling hooked them in and never really left. And like other fans before them, kids of the 00s who made Avatara key part of their identities found themselves protective of the franchise from anyone who didnt seem to get it, hence the longstanding bitterness over the live-action movie and the reflexive disdain when more information about the Netflix adaptation began pouring out. That urge to protect goes beyond live-action ventures; longtime fans will remember how much of a beatingLegend of Korrasvery unexpected) ways, but the first half can sometimes be a more frustrating watch than it should, because DiMartino and Konietzko didnt have the same amount of runway to work with as the original show. Times have changed significantly since Korras show wrapped back in 2014. Franchises have become an even bigger currency in Hollywood, but studios havent really done the best job getting out of their own way and letting said franchises do what they do best. Movies have expanded over to TV with mixed results, and not every franchise show is made equallysome arent being made like actual TV shows, and others werent really given the time to properly find themselves. Korra had its problems, but at least it got the opportunity to grow properly; with how easy it is for projects to get overwhelmed by negative reactions, both genuine and manufactured in bad faith, it might not have lasted long nowadays. The franchise has to contend with all of that, plus the possibility of having to churn out project after project should Havens or the movie do well, or being effectively cast aside if either slip up even once. If theres one thing weve learned in the past decade, its that no one is untouchable, and it doesnt take much for something once-liked to lose steam and feel washed. The originalAvatargot lucky in that it was the first and only part of itself back in 2005, and that it got to live in its own context. After its end, Paramount continued the franchise in a reactive wayeither to fan demand and streamer numbers, or not wanting the series last word to be a sour one that could alienate newcomers or keep veterans from performing a rewatch. If DiMartino and Konietzko have more stories they want to tell in this universe, then obviously they should get the space to do so with staff thats equally enthusiastic and loving of the material. But if the series is just coming back so Paramount can flex what its got and tout another all-ages franchise to stand alongside SpongeBob and other brands of childhoods past? Thatll do more damage to Avatarslegacy than any live-action project ever could. Want more io9 news? Check out when to expect the latest Marvel, Star Wars, and Star Trek releases, whats next for the DC Universe on film and TV, and everything you need to know about the future of Doctor Who.
