  • The iOS 18.4 beta brings Matter robot vacuum support
    www.theverge.com
The Switchbot S10 is one robot vacuum with Matter support.Apple released the first developer beta of iOS 18.4 yesterday, which users have since discovered contains support for robot vacuums in the Apple Home appthroughMatter. As spotted by 9to5Mac, Smart Home Centre confirmed the functionality using a Switchbot S10, which offers its own beta support for Matter. (Switchbot first added Matter robot vacuum support last year, but it required a hub and was kind of a hack.) Apple Home screenshots shared in the story show the robot vacuums Home widget (complete with a little robot vacuum glyph) along with a control screen featuring a start / stop button, options for choosing between Vacuum and Vacuum and Mop, selections for operating modes like Quiet or Deep Clean. Theres also a Send to Dock option, although Smart Home Centre notes that this only paused the S10.Robot vacuums in the new iOS beta can also be added to automations and scenes. You can see how all of it works in the outlets video below.Apple was expected to add Matter support for robot vacuum cleaners last year, but that didnt materialize. Few robot vacuum companies offer Matter support at the moment, and some of those are still waiting on a firmware update to enable it. Robot vacuum makers have confirmed to us that these models will support Matter:Ecovacs X8 Pro OmniEcovacs Deebot X2 ComboSwitchbot S20Switchbot S10Switchbot K10 Pro PlusSwitchbot K10 PlusDreame X50 UltraDreame X40 UltraRoborock Saros 10 and 10RRoborock S8 MaxV UltraRoomba Combo 10Some of the other changes users have spotted in the first developer beta for iOS 18.4 include the addition of an ambient music Control Center option, a new sketch style option in Image Playground, Apple Intelligence-powered Priority Notifications, and the ability to set a default translation app. More changes could be coming, as this is only the first beta for a release that had been expected to begin Siris big upgrade, a shift that may still be more than a month away.

  • The Best Places to Buy LEGO Sets in 2025
    www.ign.com
Over the past decade, the popularity and demand for LEGO has soared. What was once a building toy for children has expanded its audience to include teens and adults. And the sets themselves have expanded in detail, utility, and variance. Some sets are built for play. Others are built for display, as dioramas or expensive collectibles. And a growing number of sets are lifestyle accessories wall decorations, plants, and flowers that integrate themselves into the living space. There are hundreds of LEGO sets currently available for purchase, across a wide variety of piece counts, themes, and prices. And interested buyers might run into two primary problems: not finding the set they want, and if they do, not finding it at a reasonable price. The most common reason for either problem is that the specific set is "retired." LEGO retires all its sets even its popular ones to make room for new ones. And this has created a rampant resell culture, in which merchants mark up their inventory up to 2-3 times their original price. It's also a hard reality that LEGO is expensive, period, and has been getting more so for the past several years. Take, for example, the massive, 7541-piece Star Wars Millennium Falcon that launched in 2017. At the time, it cost $800, which was already well above the typical '10 cents per piece' rate of most LEGO sets. Today, that same set costs $850.You can alleviate these problems by being a smart, meticulous consumer. Here are the best places to shop for lego sets in 2025, along with the best times to look for deals.Where to Buy LEGO Sets OnlineLEGO Insiders ProgramLEGO StoreSee it at LEGOThe Best DiscountsAmazonSee it at AmazonAccepts LEGO Insider PointsTargetSee it at TargetExclusive DealsWalmartSee it at WalmartThe first, most obvious place to shop for LEGO online is the official LEGO Store, which has the widest selection available and is easily sortable by theme, price, release date, and customer rating. LEGO has responsive customer service as well as a LEGO Insiders program. It's free to sign up, and it comes with numerous perks. You can buy sets before they launch to the general public. You can receive free sets as incentives for spending money. And there are several sets that are exclusive to the LEGO Store, which cannot be bought from a third-party retailer. The most appealing aspect of the LEGO Store is its point system. Every dollar you spend converts to 6.5 points. 130 points is the equivalent of $1. That works out to 5% of whatever money you put into the system, which you save up and redeem towards a future purchase. There are also specific times during the year where you can earn double the points, which maximizes the program's value. More on that later.Your other best online options are Amazon and the online storefronts for Target and Walmart. While they do not have the point system or the exclusivity of the official store, they offer modest discounts for most of their sets. The LEGO Store, meanwhile, typically charges full retail price except on select occasions, like when it's trying to get rid of inventory near the end of a set's run. Thus, it becomes a matter of doing the math and weighing your options. Would you rather get a set with a 10% discount at Target.com (which does technically accept LEGO Insider points, but at an exchange rate that defeats the purpose)? Or would you rather pay full retail price at the online LEGO Store, but receive a future discount and an exclusive small set for free?Where to Buy Retired Sets OnlineLastly, there are the unofficial online marketplaces on Craigslist, EBay, Facebook, and more. If you're looking for a retired set, this is your only option, and be warned: your acquisition will come at a steep price. Definitely get in touch with the seller directly, definitely haggle, and definitely shop around to get the best possible deal.Where to Buy LEGO Sets in StoresBrick-and-mortar stores are your other option. It is unlikely you'll find a wider diversity of sets in person than you would online, but many people prefer personalized attention and want to physically handle a set before purchasing it.The in-person LEGO Store is a great choice for the same reasons that the online LEGO Store is a great choice. The LEGO Insiders program and its point system carry over to either option. LEGO Stores also provide interactive fun. They often contain a LEGO building station and a LEGO minifigure station, where you can choose from hundreds of body parts and accessories to create your own Mini-Me.Target and Walmart have dedicated LEGO sections in their stores, and again, should be evaluated against the LEGO Store's inventory on a case-by-case basis. Gamestop occasionally sells gaming-themed LEGO sets. Barnes and Noble sells LEGO as well: lifestyle sets, impulse purchase smaller sets, and Harry Potter sets (which makes sense, since Harry Potter is one of the best selling book franchises in history). It is unlikely that smaller outlets will be offering discounts. But it doesn't hurt to look. One last note: If you're looking for a set that's recently retired, the brick-and-mortar stores are your best bet. Just because LEGO officially retires a set doesn't mean that every 3rd party retailer complies at the stroke of midnight. I've walked into stores and seen LEGO sets that are months past their shelf date. It's improbable to get lucky. But it is possible. When Do LEGO Sets Go on Sale?Aside from regular discounts at the box-stores (which are the baseline default, rather than the exception), LEGO sets rarely receive discounts. The demand is high, and LEGO would rather retire a set than discount it. But there are specific times of the year when LEGO sets go on sale to watch out for. LEGO typically celebrates May 4 (Star Wars Day) by offering double the Insider points for purchasing Star Wars sets. LEGO also celebrates March 10 (Mario Day) by partnering with Nintendo and offering similar deals. So watch out for notable anniversaries, particularly as they relate to 3rd party franchises.Always look for clearance deals at the box-stores, which are more common at the beginning of the year. That's when LEGO retires scores of old sets and launches scores of new sets. This requires the 3rd party retailers to refresh their inventory.Lastly, the holiday season is ideal for deep discounts, particularly on Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Amazon Prime Days, which run in July and October, are also solid opportunities. Keep an eye out for any upcoming sales events for potential LEGO deals.Kevin Wong is a contributing freelancer for IGN, specializing in LEGO. • Apple pulls new iOS 18.4, iPadOS 18.4, and watchOS 11.4 beta from multiple devices

Today, Apple has unsigned watchOS 11.4 beta 1 for all Apple Watch Series 6 models, meaning it is no longer possible for those users to test out the new beta. This news comes from Aaron Perris on X. Theyve also unsigned iOS 18.4 beta 1 for some iPhone 12 models.watchOS 11.4 beta pulledApple released the watchOS 11.4 beta yesterday, alongside iOS 18.4 beta, visionOS 2.4 beta, and more. While those earlier betas had a number of new features, it isnt quite clear what changed with watchOS 11.4 beta. However, two users on the r/watchOSbeta subreddit reported that their Apple Watch bricked after installing the new update. One of them specified that they were using a Series 6, while the other didnt specify. As a result, Apple seemingly decided to pull the new beta.According to Aaron, this impacts all models of Series 6:Apple Watch Series 6 (GPS, 40mm) Apple Watch Series 6 (GPS, 44mm) Apple Watch Series 6 (GPS + Cellular, 40mm) Apple Watch Series 6 (GPS + Cellular, 44mm)iOS and iPadOS 18.4 beta pulledAdditionally, Apple has unsigned iOS 18.4 beta 1 for a number of iOS devices, including most of the iPhone 12 lineup, a few iPad models released in 2020, and cellular versions of the most recent iPad Air model. Its unclear what exactly the issue is here, but a number of users reported boot looping. • Did xAI lie about Grok 3s benchmarks?
    techcrunch.com
Debates over AI benchmarks and how theyre reported by AI labs are spilling out into public view. This week, an OpenAI employee accused Elon Musks AI company, xAI, of publishing misleading benchmark results for its latest AI model, Grok 3. One of the co-founders of xAI, Igor Babushkin, insisted that the company was in the right. The truth lies somewhere in between. In a post on xAIs blog, the company published a graph showing Grok 3s performance on AIME 2025, a collection of challenging math questions from a recent invitational mathematics exam. Some experts have questioned AIMEs validity as an AI benchmark. Nevertheless, AIME 2025 and older versions of the test are commonly used to probe a models math ability. xAIs graph showed two variants of Grok 3, Grok 3 Reasoning Beta and Grok 3 mini Reasoning, beating OpenAIs best-performing available model, o3-mini-high, on AIME 2025. But OpenAI employees on X were quick to point out that xAIs graph didnt include o3-mini-highs AIME 2025 score at cons@64. What is cons@64, you might ask? Well, its short for consensus@64, and it basically gives a model 64 tries to answer each problem in a benchmark and takes the answers generated most frequently as the final answers. As you can imagine, cons@64 tends to boost models benchmark scores quite a bit, and omitting it from a graph might make it appear as though one model surpasses another when in reality, thats isnt the case.Grok 3 Reasoning Beta and Grok 3 mini Reasonings scores for AIME 2025 at @1 meaning the first score the models got on the benchmark fall below o3-mini-highs score. Grok 3 Reasoning Beta also trails ever-so-slightly behind OpenAIs o1 model set to medium computing. Yet xAI is advertising Grok 3 as the worlds smartest AI.Babushkin argued on X that OpenAI has published similarly misleading benchmark charts in the past albeit charts comparing the performance of its own models. A more neutral party in the debate put together a more accurate graph showing nearly every models performance at cons@64:But as AI researcher Nathan Lambert pointed out in a post, perhaps the most important metric remains a mystery: the computational (and monetary) cost it took for each model to achieve its best score. That just goes to show how little most AI benchmarks communicate about models limitations and their strengths.

  • New MacBook Air Leak Reveals Apple's Powerful Upgrade
    www.forbes.com
MacBook Air laptops are seen displayed during the WWDC22 at Apple Park (Photo by Justin ... [+] Sullivan/Getty Images)Getty ImagesApple's product launch team is having a busy first quarter of 2025. Now that the iPhone 16e has been revealed, the community is looking to the Mac lineup, expecting Tim Cook and his team to finally release a MacBook Air with the latest Apple Silicon M4 chipset. With two models now showing up in the online benchmarking tools, not only is the launch getting closer, but we also know a little more about the potential performance of the macOS consumer-focused laptops.Benchmarking The MacBook Air M4Data on the next MacBook Air, expected to be the first to be equipped with Apple's M4 chipset, comes from the ever-popular Geekbench utility. It shows the "Mac 16,2" model (which is widely recognised as the upcoming 13-inch MacBook Air) comfortably outpacing the current M3-equipped MacBook Air, even if you assume there is still some software optimisation to take place before a potential late-Q1 2025 release. The "Mac 16,3" model has also been benchmarked, and it is recognised as the upcoming 15-inch MacBook Air.The benchmark data points to the hardware being tested, which comes with a 10-core version of the M4 chipset; 8-core and 9-core versions are also available. This could mean that every MacBook Air will come with the 10-core version, but its more likely that this is a higher-spec variant in the range, with an 8- or 9-core version available at a lower price point. Apple has, after all, sought to keep the MacBook entry-level price at $999, which could be easier to reach with a lower-specced chipset. The MacBook Air M4 Thermal LimitsUnsurprisingly, these early benchmarks show an advantage over the previous M3-equipped MacBook Air models. They also show that the M4-powered MacBook Pro model will have an advantage over the M4 MacBook Air.This has happened since the first Apple Silicon for macOS chipset was launched with the M1 MacBook Air and M2 MacBook Pro. While both used the same chipset, the Pro model was equipped with a fan to cool down the chipset, allowing for faster performance over more extended periods due to the improved thermal efficiency. That was true of the M2 and M3 models, and there's no reason to think that the M4 decisions will differ. The most significant gains on show are in the GPU. The benchmarking of Metal and OpenCL suggests a performance increase of over 30 percent. For consumers looking for a laptop that offers solid graphical performance, the M4 MacBook Air could be the laptop they are looking for. However, it remains to be seen if this GPU performance can be sustained or if it is a short-term spike before the thermal issues require a throttling of the silicon. The Benefits Of Older MacBook Air SpecsAlthough Apple launched the first M1 chipset with the MacBook Air, it will be one of the last Apple product lines to launch an M4 version. The M4 was launched in May 2024, and the iPad Pro was the first to ship with it. The M4 Pro and M4 Max followed in Nov. 2024 inside the MacBook Pro and Mac Mini. We're now approaching ten months after the M4 debuted. Given the annual cycle that Apple appears to be settling into, the MacBook Air will only stay current for a few weeks before a potential M5 launch around Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference in May or June. This has to be balanced out with the power and performance that Apple Silicon has been able to consistently deliver since the first reveal in Nov. 2020. Those who need excess power on tap for coding, developing, editing, and creativity will pay the premium for the MacBook Pro models. As a daily driver, the lower yet still substantial power available on the MacBook Air is sufficient for most consumers. Even if the Apple Silicon is nearly a year old, it meets consumer expectations and undoubtedly helps Apple maintain a healthy profit margin on its popular macOS laptop. Now read the latest MacBook Air, iPhone and iOS headlines in Forbes' weekly Apple digest...
