  • Mac security researchers expose two new exploits
    www.macworld.com
MacworldTwo new Mac exploits discovered recently are good reminders of best practices for staying safe, such as not letting strangers access your computer, staying up to date with software updates, and getting your software from known trusted sources. The first exploit involves Parallels, the virtual machine that allows the Mac to run Windows, Linux, and older versions of macOS. The vulnerability is on Intel Macs running Parallels and allows an attacker to gain root access by exploiting holes in the Parallels VM creation routine. The attacker needs to have access to the Mac to perform this, however.Researcher Mickey Jin decided to post about the vulnerability that was reported to Parallels seven months ago, in an attempt to get the company to issue a fix. Parallels has posted a knowledgebase article about the flaw, stating that Parallels Desktop 20.2.2 and Parallels Desktop 19.4.2, which will include fixes, will be issued within this week. Apple silicon Macs are not affected. The other new exploit, reported by security firm Proofpoint, involves a new malware called FrigidStealer. The attack occurs when a user gets an email containing a URL, and when the user opens it, a webpage launches with an alert stating that the browser needs to be updated. When the Update button is clicked, an installer is saved to the Mac, and the user is instructed to open it by Control-clicking on the app icon and selecting Open from the pop-up menu. Opening the file this way bypasses Gatekeeper, macOSs built-in security that checks for malicious apps. This then installs the malware. The FrigidStealer malware attacks have been targeting users outside of North America. If installed, it records information and files related to passwords, browser cookie data, and anything created in Apple Notes. How to protect yourselfThe easiest way to protect yourself from malware is to avoid downloading software from repositories such as GitHub and other download sites. Apple has vetted software in the Mac App Store and is the safest way to get apps. If you prefer not to patronize the Mac App Store, then buy software directly from the developer and their website. If you insist on using cracked software, you will always risk malware exposure.Never open links in emails or texts you receive from unknown and unexpected sources. If you get a message that looks like it is from an entity that you do business with, check the senders email address, and inspect the URL carefully. If you see a link or button, you can Control-click it, select Copy Link, and then paste it into a text editor to see the actual URL and check it.Apple releases security patches through OS updates, so installing them as soon as possible is important. Its also important to update the apps on your Mac, which you can do through the App Store or through the apps settings. Macworld has several guides to help, including a guide onwhether or not you need antivirus software, alist of Mac viruses, malware, and trojans, and acomparison of Mac security software.

  • DOGE gets a new leader amid wave of staff resignations
    www.computerworld.com
The US Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) appears to have a new chief after the White House appointed a little-known official, Amy Gleason, as its acting administrator.Such administration appointments dont normally attract a lot of attention, but these are not normal times and, as commentators keep reminding everyone, DOGE is not a normal department.Even the news of Gleasons appointment was made in unorthodox style through comments to media outlets by an anonymous White House official, rather than through an official press announcement. At the same time, it now has fewer staff although these are possibly not the roles DOGE booster Elon Musk was hoping to eliminate when he emailed government employees last week a now notorious ultimatum requiring them to list their weekly achievements by reply or face being fired.Federal workers at the US Digital Service, now renamed DOGE, have the IT and technical skills needed to fulfil DOGEs remit of cutting government overheads and driving out waste while slimming down its supposedly bloated headcount. Not all of them, though, are happy with the departments abrupt change of direction. On Tuesday, 21 of them, including engineers, data scientists and IT staff, resigned en masse, claiming in a letter passed to media outlets including Associated Press that they were being asked by DOGE to use their technical skills to dismantle critical public services. We swore to serve the American people and uphold our oath to the Constitution across presidential administrations. However, it has become clear that we can no longer honor those commitments, the letter reportedly said.Motivation in questionMany of the remaining staff working for DOGE lacked the skills to do the job and were motivated primarily by ideological zeal, the letter said. DOGE was mishandling sensitive data, introducing security risks and breaking critical systems, they added. The last straw: being asked about their political loyalty during interviews. These are not the first resignations and might not be the last from the technical teams Musk will be depending on to fulfil his, at times, increasingly chaotic remit. Last week Steven Reilly, lead engineer for the notify.gov government messaging service, resigned over an alleged request by a Musk appointee for access to 20 government systems containing sensitive data.Everyone had previously assumed DOGE was being run and directed by Elon Musk even though for two weeks nobody within the administration was able to confirm this. Bizarrely, that included White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt when asked direct questions on the subject during press briefings.Last week, 14 US states forced the administrations hand by naming Musk as DOGE head as part of a suit seeking to curb the departments power. This was denied by White House Director of the Office of Administration, Joshua Fisher in a counter-filing; Musk wasnt running or directing DOGE because nobody was, he claimed. That now looks like a delaying tactic. DOGE might not have official status, but at least it now has a chief in Gleason, even if her appointment appears to have been made in the strangest way possible by a White House source who would prefer to remain nameless.Acting administrator Gleasons LinkedIn profile includes a three-year stint with the first Trump Administration as a digital services expert, after a career largely focused on healthcare. In theory, her appointment makes her accountable for DOGEs actions and missteps, which matters at a time when its actions are generating significant opposition and scrutiny. But the question is whether she or anyone can ever be said to be running DOGE when everyone pays more attention to the statements of the operations puppet master, Elon Musk.Whats not in doubt is that with DOGE rapidly turning into a rallying point for opponents of the Administrations agenda, Gleason has her work cut out for her.Until relatively recently in history, quickly gaining access to tens of millions of files on citizens would have been impossible. They were held in paper files requiring months of work by huge teams to trawl through. In the last two decades, this has changed. Now, in the digital era, those same files can be stored on a large hard drive. Analyzing the data can be achieved within days or hours. Thats why access to these files is controlled by layers of rules and laws covering data security and privacy, and who is trustworthy enough to be granted access. This is the battle line now cited in multiple lawsuits: is DOGEs unorthodox modus operandi and data mining agenda remotely compatible with these rules?

  • US Intelligence backs Apple over UK encryption backdoor demands
    appleinsider.com
The Director of National Intelligence was apparently blindsided when the UK demanded that Apple open an encryption backdoor, and says that lawyers and other agencies are on the case.UK ParliamentTo avoid having to comply with the UK government's legally binding but entirely secret demand, Apple switched off certain end to end encryption in the country. The UK's unprecedented demand for spy access to all users' encrypted data sparked controversy worldwide, including a bipartisan response in the US.Senators Ron Wyden (D) of the Senate Intelligence Committee and Andy Biggs (R) on the House Judiciary committee, wrote to Tulsi Gabbard, the new National Intelligence Director about the issue. Gabbard has now replied, saying the US was not informed of the secret order, and expressing her "grave concern" over the UK demanding data over US citizens.
