• Google Updates Unstoppable PixelAll Other Phones Left Behind
    www.forbes.com
Pixel first againGetty ImagesGoogle looks set to release the latest Pixel update next month, further widening the gap with Samsung Galaxy phones still awaiting their first Android 15 update. Ironically, the good Pixel news comes at the same time as the bad Samsung news that Android 15 and its One UI 7 wrap are likely delayed even longer than feared. On the Pixel update front, there is some confusion, as Google initially confirmed a March release for the new scam detection and protection update coming to users phones. While the date reference was quickly dropped, theres no reason to think it wont be available at some point next month. This is just the latest example of Pixel being first to new features and functions, which is a pain for other users when it comes to privacy and security. Android 15 has been all about locking down devices to narrow the gap to iPhone. Whats actually happened in practice is that it has created a new Android gap between Pixel and the rest.Scam call detectionGoogleThis situation seems unviable long-term, when Samsung owners who have spent $1500-plus on a Galaxy S24 wait months to catch Pixel owners who have spent much less. We will all now wait to see if the latest One UI 7 timeline holds and then how Android 16 fares as regards Pixels timeline versus the rest.As for this latest update, as Android Police reports, Googles Scam Detection features scan phone calls in real-time to spot signs of fraud, essentially by identifying conversation patterns commonly associated with scams. After testing the feature in beta for over three months, it looks like it might be ready for prime time.Call scams have been making headlines in recent weeks, fueled by the rise in AI threats and urgent but fake banking and technical support calls that push users to install software or transfer money. All of that should be caught by the new on-device call monitoring, as well as Googles restriction on app sideloads while on calls. As for the wider Android issue, were very much in wait and see mode for now.

  • Apple Security Downgrade Puts iPhone Users At Serious Risk
    www.forbes.com
Tricky times for AppleAFP via Getty ImagesMaybe some light at the end of the dark new tunnel for iPhone users, as the Trump administration warns of a serious vulnerability for cyber exploitation by adversarial actors if Apple succumbs to pressure to further downgrade its security. Were talking the misjudged U.K. secret/not secret mandate for Apple to backdoor its own encryption, providing security agencies access to what was fully encrypted data under the countrys controversial Snoopers Charter legislation. U.K. users are already at risk following Apples downgrade its critical it stops there and is reversed.A week ago, I reported on the letter from Senator Ron Wyden and Congressman Andy Biggs to Tulsi Gabbard, Americas newly installed DNI. This urged the intel chief to prevent a U.K. move to undermine Americans privacy rights and expose them to espionage by China, Russia and other adversaries.Whats actually happened is that Apple has refused to comply with the U.K. mandate, confirming that it has never and will never build a backdoor. Instead it has withdrawn its fully encrypted iCloud offering from the U.K. As such, Americans remain unaffected while users in the U.K. are put at risk as their security is weakened.Gabbard says in her reply that she had no prior insight into the U.K. move ahead of the press coverage, but that she shares their grave concerns about the serious implications of the United Kingdom, or any foreign country, requiring Apple or any company to create a backdoor that would allow access to Americans personal encrypted data.Gabbard has requested my counterparts at CIA, DIA, DHS, FBI and NSA to provide insights regarding the publicly reported actions, and will subsequently engage with UK government officials. Ironically, the U.K. mandate for accessible encryption is exactly what the FBI says it wants in the U.S. to aid investigations. But thats clearly not the same as such access being available to non-American agencies. It seems likely U.S. intervention will kill or at least stall the backdoor mandate, but that wont help the millions of Brits now denied access to fully secured cloud backups. That should be restored. The threat landscape is too risky for such a downgrade. Even the U.K.s own spy agency has advised iPhone users to enable Advanced Data Protection albeit thats no longer available to them. What happens next is critical, especially as Sweden is now reportedly threatening its own forced breach of end-to-end encryption. We do not want to see the encryption debate blow up again with lawmakers questioning its importance. We had hoped that debate was closed. Whats happened in the last two weeks is alarming.

  • Amazon uses quantum cat states with error correction
    arstechnica.com
Qubits prime? Amazon uses quantum cat states with error correction The company shows off a mix of error-resistant hardware and error correction. John Timmer Feb 26, 2025 2:15 pm | 6 Credit: ALFRED PASIEKA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY Credit: ALFRED PASIEKA/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY Story textSizeSmallStandardLargeWidth *StandardWideLinksStandardOrange* Subscribers only Learn moreFollowing up on Microsoft's announcement of a qubit based on completely new physics, Amazon is publishing a paper describing a very different take on quantum computing hardware. The system mixes two different types of qubit hardware to improve the stability of the quantum information they hold. The idea is that one type of qubit is resistant to errors, while the second can be used for implementing an error-correction code that catches the problems that do happen. While there have been more effective demonstrations of error correction in the past, a number of companies are betting that Amazon's general approach is the best route to getting logical qubits that are capable of complex algorithms. So, in that sense, it's an important proof of principle.Herding catsThe basic idea behind Amazon's approach is to use one type of qubit to hold data and a second to enable error correction. The data qubit is extremely resistant to one type of error, but prone to a second. Those errors are where the second type of qubit comes in; it's used to run an error-correction code that's effective at picking up the problems the data qubits are prone to. Combined, the two are hoped to allow error correction to be handled by far fewer hardware qubits. In a standard computer, there's really only one type of error to worry about: a bit that no longer holds the value it was set to. This is called a bit flip, since the value goes from either zero to one, or one to zero. As with most things quantum computing, things are considerably more complicated with qubits. Since they don't hold binary values, but rather probabilities, you can't just flip the value of the qubit. Instead, bit flips in quantum land involve inverting the probabilitiesgoing from 60:40 to 40:60 or similar. But bit flips aren't the only problems that can occur. Qubits can also suffer from what are called phase flip errors. These have no equivalent in classical computers, but they can also keep quantum computers from operating as expected. In the past, Amazon demonstrated qubits that made it trivially easy to detect when a bit flip error occurred. For the new work, they moved on to something different: a qubit that greatly reduces the probability of bit flip errors. They do this by using what are called "cat qubits," after the famed Schrdinger's cat, which existed in two states at once. While most qubits are based on a single quantum object being placed in this sort of superposition of states, a cat qubit has a collection of objects in a single superposition. (Put differently, the superposition state is distributed across the collection of objects.) In the case of the cat qubits demonstrated so far by companies like Alice and Bob, the objects are photons, which are all held in a single resonator, and Amazon is using similar tech.Cat qubits have a distinctive feature compared to other options: bit flips are improbable, and get even less probable as you pump more photons into the resonator. But this has a drawback: more photons mean that phase flips become more probable.Flipping catsThose phase flips are why a second set of qubits, called transmons were brought in. (Transmons are a commonly used type of qubit based on a loop of superconducting wire linked to a microwave resonator and used by companies like IBM and Google.) These were used to create a chain of qubits, alternating between cat and transmon. This allowed the team to create a logical, error-corrected qubit using a simple error-correction code called a repetition code. The layout of Amazon's hardware. Data-holding cat qubits (blue) alternate with transmons (orange), which can be measured to detect errors. Credit: Putterman et. al. Here, each of the cat qubits starts off in the same state and is entangled with its neighboring transmons. This allowed the transmons to track what was going on in the cat qubits by performing what are called weak measurements. These don't destroy the quantum state like a full measurement would but can allow the detection of changes in the neighboring cat qubits and provide the information needed to fix any errors. So, the combination of the two means that almost all the errors that occur are phase flips, and the phase flips are detected and fixed. In more typical error-correction schemes, you need enough qubits around to do measurements to identify both the location of an error and the nature of the error (phase or bit flip). Here, Amazon is assuming all errors are phase flips, and its team can identify the location of the flip based on which of the transmons detects an error, as shown by the red flags in the diagram above. It allows for a logical qubit that uses far fewer hardware qubits and measurements to get a given level of error correction. The challenge of any error-correction setup is that each hardware qubit involved is error-prone. Adding too many into the error-correction system will mean that multiple errors are likely to occur simultaneously in a way that causes error correction to become impossible. Once the error rate of the hardware qubits gets low enough, however, adding additional qubits will bring the error rate down. So, the key measurement done here is comparing a chain that has three cat qubits and two transmons to one that has five cat qubits and four transmons. These measurements showed that the five qubit chain had a lower error rate than the smaller one. This shows that the hardware is now at a state where error correction provides a benefit. The characterization of the system indicated a couple of major limits, though. Cat qubits make bit flips extremely unlikely, but not impossible. By focusing error correction only on phase flips, any bit flips that do occur inescapably trigger the failure of the entire logical, error-corrected qubit. "Achieving long logical bit-flip times is challenging because any single cat qubit bit flip event in any part of the repetition code directly causes a logical bit flip error," the authors note. The other issue is that the transmons used for error correction still suffer from both bit and phase flips, which can also mess up the entire error-corrected qubit.Where does this leave us?There are a number of companies like Amazon that are betting that using a somehow less error-prone hardware qubit will allow them to get effective error correction using fewer total hardware qubits. If they're correct, they'll be able to build error-corrected quantum computers using far fewer qubits, and so potentially perform useful computation sooner. For them, this paper is an important validation of the idea. You can do a sort of mixed-mode error correction, with a robust hardware qubit paired with a compact error-correction code. But beyond that, the messages are pretty mixed. The hardware still had to rely on less robust hardware qubits (the transmons) to do error correction, and the very low error rate was still not low enough to avoid having occasional bit flips. And, ultimately, the error rate improvements gained by increasing the size of the logical qubit aren't on a trajectory that would get you a useful level of error correction without needing an unrealistically large number of hardware qubits. In short, the underlying hardware isn't currently good enough to enable any sort of complex calculation, and it would need radical improvements before it can be. And there's not an obvious alternate route to effective error correction. The potential of this approach is still there, but it's not obvious how we're going to build hardware that lives up to that potential. As for Amazon, the picture is even less clear, given that this is the second qubit technology that it has talked about publicly. It's unclear whether the company is going to go all-in on this approach, or is still looking for a technology that it's willing to commit to.Nature, 2025. • The Supreme Court just handed the Trump administration a win on USAID
    www.businessinsider.com
The Supreme Court halted a lower court's order for Trump to release USAID funds.Chief Justice John Roberts granted the stay but provided no reason for the decision in the ruling. This stay gives the Supreme Court time to evaluate the case and decide whether the Trump administration must release funds. The Supreme Court issued a ruling on Wednesday night that halted a lower court's order for President Donald Trump to release funding for the US Agency for International Development. In its February 26 ruling, the SCOTUS blocked a court order from District Judge Amir Ali related to two cases brought against the Trump administration by aid organizations including the AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition and the Global Health Council.Ali's ruling on the cases would have compelled the Trump administration to release foreign aid dollars to grant recipients and USAID contractors by midnight on Wednesday. But the SCOTUS halted Ali's decision after attorneys for the Trump administration on Wednesday said in a court filingSarah Harris, the acting solicitor general, appealed to the SCOTUS on Wednesday to vacate the lower court's order. In her filing, Harris said that the "district court's imminent and arbitrary deadline makes full compliance impossible."Harris added that the lower court's order required the administration to disburse "nearly $2 billion by 11:59 p.m.""These payments cannot be accomplished in the time allotted by the Court and would instead take multiple weeks," Harris wrote.Chief Justice John Roberts granted the administrative stay but provided no reason for the decision in theThe SCOTUS' stay now gives the court time to evaluate and rule on the Trump administration's request.USAID was one of the first targets of the Department of Government Efficiency. The cuts to USAID come after Trump, in a January 20 executive order, called for a 90-day freeze on foreign aid. That executive order and other actions have affected thousands of US workers.Judges other than Ali have made rulings that slowed the Trump team's attempts to dismantle USAID.On February 7, Judge Carl Nichols issued a temporary restraining order that paused the administration's USAID staff reductions. But USAID suffered a major court loss on February 21 when Nichols allowed headcount cuts to go ahead, reversing his previous order. In 2024, USAID distributed close to $32.5 billion in aid, primarily to causes in Africa and the Middle East.

  • Federal workers react to Trump administration's new plan for restructuring, staff cuts: 'They'll have to fire me.'
    www.businessinsider.com
In a Wednesday memo, Trump administration officials advanced a plan for federal staff reductions. The memo said departments across agencies should prepare to cut staff and reorganize by March 13.Federal workers told BI they're frustrated, but not surprised, by the planned restructuring.President Donald Trump's administration officially announced its plan for federal staff reductions in a Wednesday memo, telling agencies to prepare to cut staff and reorganize their departments by March 13.Federal workers who spoke to Business Insider after the memo was announced said the move was "crazy and illogical." Still, some were determined to continue working until they were removed from office. The memo, sent by the Office of Management and Budget and the Office of Personnel Management, did not identify specific targets for cutbacks, which they described as advancing the White House DOGE office efficiency initiatives. However, during a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, Trump suggested as an example that as much as 65% of staff at the Environmental Protection Agency could be cut.Representatives for the White House, OPM, and OMB did not immediately respond to requests for comment from BI."I think what is going on is unfair to us. I have been told my job is exempt, but I truly don't believe it," an employee from the Department of Veterans Affairs said. "I know that we are shorthanded but also don't trust the government or my supervisors here. I have seen nothing in writing. That scares me also."The memo outlines a timeline for most agencies with exemptions for federal law enforcement, military, border security, and US Postal Service employees to prepare and execute a layoff and reorganization strategy. Agencies must submit their restructuring plans by March 13 and "outline a positive vision for more productive, efficient agency operations" by April 14, with an implementation deadline in September. It also requires field office operations to be consolidated or closed, which one employee of the Social Security Administration said would impact frontline offices that handle claims and issue Social Security cards, as well as disability hearing offices that handle appeals of unfavorable decisions in disability cases."So, the people who complain about long wait times and nobody answering the phone are talking about those entities, maybe there are a lot of layers of bureaucracy above us, but those exist to provide support for us frontline people," the Social Security Administration employee told BI. "This is crazy and illogical, motivated by a blind, stupid hatred of the Public Sector as a whole."An Internal Revenue Service employee told BI that "it will take years, if not decades, to fully recover" from the federal government cuts."Americans are going to feel this very deeply," they said. "Services are going to be nonexistent."An employee from the Department of Housing and Urban Development said they're prepared to be moved to a different department after a meeting with their supervisor about the memo."There's so much confusion respond to the productivity email, don't respond, and now being told to get ready to move departments I see how this Elon tactic can mentally drain you because this week was so hard to log in and be productive," the HUD worker told BI.The restructuring memo comes just days after the White House DOGE office sent a weekend email asking all federal employees to list what work tasks they had accomplished last week, prompting confusing among some employees about how and whether to reply outside their chain of command. While the confusion created by the emails and subsequentconflicting guidance from department headshas caused some federal workers who previously spoke to BI to reconsider their work in the government, others say they're resolved to stick it out."I've never seen morale so low in my 18 years of service," an employee from the Bureau of Reclamation told BI, adding that they "believe we are witnessing the final days" of their agency.Still, they said they see their department's work protecting water resources as essential for the country and have no plans of stopping unless they're forced out of public service."They'll have to fire me," they said.

  • The Wheel of Time Cast on Whats in Store for Their Characters in Season 3
    gizmodo.com
By Cheryl Eddy Published February 26, 2025 | Comments (0) | Elayne (Ceara Coveney) and Aviendha (Ayoola Smart) in season three. Prime Video The Wheel of Time season three is nearly hereand the first episode kicks off with a massive, thrilling magic battle scene. (You can watch it here through the end of today, otherwise youll have to wait until the premiere.) Ahead of the Robert Jordan adaptations return to Prime Video, io9 got a chance to talk with multiple cast members, starting with Sophie Okonedo. Her character, Aes Sedai leader Siuan Sanche, is dead-center in that huge, season-opening brawl. I was very nervous to do that scene, because its slightly out of my comfort zone, Okonedo recalled of filming the sequence. I havent done much stuff like that. So I was worried that I wouldnt be able to pull it off. But actually it was really great. I was very held through the whole sequence with the other actors and by Ciaran [Donnelly, the episodes director] and the stunt people. So you felt like you could still do your acting within this huge, choreographed set piece. Hopefully you can see whats going on with Siuan by my acting, but [shes experiencing] a lot of things: betrayal, anger, loss. Despite the heavy mood of the scene, and all the staging that had to go into it, Okonedo said she had a blast creating it. It was quite a lot of fun, because its actually the first time Ive been with all those women together, in that room for two weeks. It was a lot of laughs and I was quite sad [when] that bit ended, because we had a good time doing it. Siuan Sanche takes aim. Prime Video Siuans tender relationship with Moiraine, a powerful Aes Sedai member played by Rosamund Pike, fractured in season two, and theres still some mending to be done in season three. Moiraine also had strife with her Warder, Lan, after the brief but devastating loss of her powersbut they at least were able to repair their bond ahead of the season two finale. Daniel Henney, who plays Lan, says the duo will need each other more than ever in season three, as Moiraine resumes her role as mentor of Rand alThor (Josha Stradowski), the prophesied Dragon Reborn whos destined to fight a potentially world-ending battle.I dont think that he ever held any sort of resentment or blame toward her being so mission-oriented and driven toward their goal, Henney said. He understood completely what she was doing. And you could see while he was working this plan out himself, he had the ultimate faith in what she was doing. And that paid off. I think hes most likely happier to find a level footing with her at the beginning of season three. Theyre back together, and they have to be, because whats in front of Rand [is] sort of devolving and dealing with the corruption and whats going on inside of him. So they have to be at their strongest right now. Other important ties this season include the friendship between lifelong pals Perrin (Marcus Rutherford) and Mat (Dnal Finn), who each went through their own nightmarish twists and turns in season twobut, at the start of season three at least, are finally back together, sharing a drink. Or a few drinks, if youre Mat, whose party-guy persona helps him work through his PTSD.I think he loves being a really good friend, Finn reflected. And I think it is so easy to look around the table of his friends and realize how much hardship there is in the world, and particularly [given] all of their circumstances. A big quality in his character is to minimize his own turmoil in an effort to bolster the people around him; its really a selfless thing. Im sure we all have experiences of being like, I want to show up for my mate [even though] I have my own stuff going on, but its also pretty severe what is going on for him as well. Hes dealing with this inherited pain or grief from the Horn of Valere, [carried over from] the previous Heroes of the Horn. Its a lot to contend with in his private lifeand then also to kind of step out into his public persona and to act like nothing is fine, I think its his great friends that see through that and offer him the support that he needs. Perrin also draws strength from his old friends, all of whom have experienced life-changing adventures since we first met them in season one. Perrin actually returns to [their homeland of] the Two Rivers this season, Rutherford said. [It reminds you of] everything that happened when Moiraine arrived, they were thrust into this kind of quest and journey. It wasnt really a decision. They were kind of dragged from their homes. So I think they have that bond, still, that friendship, that this is kind of a situation they didnt choose to be in. Theres only a few people that they come across who will understand theheavy toll that they carry. And thats probably the Emonds [Field] crew that were there initially. Marcus Rutherford as Perrin (center), with Rand (Josha Stradowski) and Mat (Dnal Finn). Prime Video Two newer additions to Wheel of Times ensembleElayne Trakand (Ceara Coveney), who is both an Aes Sedai novice and a royal heiress, and fierce Aiel warrior Aveindha (Ayoola Smart)joined the adventure last season, and while they didnt spend much time together in season two, season three reveals there could be more than just friendship between the characters. On paper they could be perceived as being from very different worlds, from very different upbringings, Smart said. But theres commonality between them, definitely, in terms of how they view the world and their relationship to duty, and to the role that theyve been given in life and how they ultimately deal with that. Theres an element of a kindred spirit there, and also theyre two women who are both very intelligent and both very curious. I think that natural curiosity also draws them together. Speaking of those different backgrounds, audiences will get to meet Elaynes family early this season, including her formidable motherQueen Morgase Trakand, played by Dune: Prophecys Olivia Williamsand her brothers, Galad (Callum Kerr) and Gawyn (Luke Fetherston). It was really, really interesting to be able to dive into that this season and really explore her family dynamics, Coveny said. At the end of season two, obviously her experiences being kidnapped and being thrown into such a dangerous situation and surviving, I think has really opened up her world and her perspectives. And then to, so early in season three, be thrown back into the dynamic of her family and having them around herit really throws up a lot of conflict for her. Being able to work alongside Olivia Williams playing Queen Morgase was absolutely incredible. I think her presence and what she brought to the character really gave me so much to work with and the conflict therein. And then as well bringing in [Elaynes] brothers, played by the amazing Callum Kerr and Luke Fetherston, they just each brought a dynamic that really challenged what weve seen so far of Elayne in the series. She continued. Its been a really incredible journey to really be torn between her old life and her new life and that responsibility. Also, I think her experiences have taught her that maybe shes not as ready to be queen as she thoughtand maybe there are more things that she needs to apply herself to in order to follow in her mothers footsteps. It really challenges what her and her mother had always envisioned for her; maybe that isnt the way anymore. And shes really coming to grips with what that looks like.
