• Verizon Offers Discounted Internet With Extra Perks to Its Mobile Customers
    www.cnet.com
Verizon has been slowly growing its 5G Home wireless internet userbase alongside its LTE and FIOS wired fiber internet, and it offered a discount when signing up for both internet and select mobile plans. Now it's expanding that discount to anyone signed up for a monthly subscription mobile plan: $15 off each month's bill when adding internet to mobile service, as well as an entertainment subscription plan perk. With its most affordable home internet plan, mobile subscribers (excluding prepaid) can get internet for as little as $35.The carrier relaunched its unlimited mobile plans into its myPlan offerings back in June 2023, and similarly rebranded its Home Internet offerings as myHome plans last June. Both plans allow you to pick extra perks, like digital subscriptions to Netflix and HBO, to add to your plan a la carte for $10 apiece, a saving of half their usual price or more. Upgrade your inbox Get cnet insider From talking fridges to iPhones, our experts are here to help make the world a little less complicated. Today's announcement bridges these two offerings. The discount and extra perks bring on the next phase of the carrier's plans to offer money-saving consolidation of services, said Frank Boulben, chief revenue officer for Verizon Consumer Group."You can describe it as convergence, the Verizon way. It's simple and you get great value for the money that is unique," Boulben said. He noted that the perks are based on exclusive partnerships with Verizon. While the discount applies with any home internet offering, subscribers with a premium home internet plan get an extra perk credit on Verizon to choose, which is a $10 monthly savings. You can switch your choice of free perk every month. Mobile and home internet customers also get access to premium customer care, which expedites support responses.Verizon, like other carriers, offers incentives like trade-in discounts for mobile plans to compete with its rivals. But this internet discount isn't a similar effort to lure subscribers from the competition. Instead, it's to grow the number of customers who have both its mobile and internet services, Boulben said. There's crossover between mobile customers and, specifically, signups for Verizon's 5G Home fixed wireless access internet."If I look at our fixed wireless access space, roughly speaking, 75 to 80% is to existing mobile subscribers. So it's largely a cross-sell on the fixed wireless side," Boulben said. "When we sell fixed wireless access on a standalone basis, a number of those customers take mobile afterwards."This is also part of Verizon's efforts to get the word out about fixed wireless access, as awareness is lower than of traditional wired internet solutions, like Verizon's FIOS fiber, which has been around for 20 years, Boulben said. It's possible that customers might confuse fixed wireless access, which operates on the carrier's 5G network, with mobile service to smartphones and handheld devices."5G Home [customers] maybe wrongly believe that it's a kind of mobile hotspot, so I think we need to continue and communicate about the fact that it's a complete replacement for your home internet connectivity," Boulben said.As of last October, Verizon had 4.6 million fixed wireless access internet subscribers out of a total 12.3 million connections when combined with wired fiber internet, according to the carrier's fourth quarter 2024 earnings report. These are the company's future, though growth is skewed toward wireless, which added 373,000 net customers in that quarter compared to fiber's 51,000 additional net customers. Cable internet is the area that's losing subscribers consistently over a number of quarters, Boulben noted.Verizon's fiber internet footprint covers 18 million households, mostly centered in the US Northeast. The carrier plans to expand its FIOS offerings to 650,000 additional households in 2025, and add a million more each year going forward. Its fixed wireless access availability is much broader, covering 60 million locations.

  • 'Power Book III: Raising Kanan' Release Date and What the Cast Tells Us About Season 4
    www.cnet.com
Power Book III: Raising Kanan is set to return next week, with Raquel Thomas, Kanan and the rest of the family in for a big surprise. The season 3 finale not only saw some major character deaths but fan-favorite Unique -- played by Joey Bada$$ -- also rose from the dead. What now? Showrunner Sascha Penn and stars MeKai Curtis, Patina Miller, Malcolm Mays, London Brown and Joey Bada$$ spoke with CNET about season 4 and dropped hints at what's to come for their characters. The new spinoff installment also sees Tony Danza's return as Stefano Marchetti, Wendell Pierce and Erika Woods as Snaps and Pop, with cast newcomers Chris Redd as Early and Pardison Fontaine as B-Rilla.Raq, Marvin, Lou and Kanan have no idea Unique is alive yet, so heading into season 4, it's business as usual for the Thomas family. Kanan and his mother aren't on the greatest terms, but at its core, the show is about his journey and the effect it has on his environment -- and all the people in it. That effect will become more pronounced this time around."I think what we start to see in season 4 that's different, is I do think that Kanan really starts to take steps toward being the guy that we see him become in Power," said Penn. "You can't go through everything this guy's been through without getting a little harder, a little tougher, a little more cynical and frankly, a little more violent."Curtis added, "As Kanan discovers more about himself, as Kanan discovers more about the world around him, he discovers he's more like his mother than ever, and he's trying to combat that."Raq has her own battles this time, Miller shared that we will see a new side to her this season, which may surprise us. "There are going to be some big moments for her that she can't just Raq her way out of," she explained."To see her have to navigate as someone who's so used to being in control, to kind of lose a bit of control, and what that feels like, and how uncomfortable it is -- I think will be really exciting for audiences to see this new side of Raquel. Because you've grown with her, you've watched her from 1 through 3 be so thorough and so together. What happens when she's not as together? And how does she navigate relationships? What causes her to not have it together?" London Brown as Marvin Thomas, Patina Miller and Raquel (Raq) Thomas and Malcom Mays as Lou-Lou Thomas. StarzWhat's up with Unique, Marvin, Lou-Lou and those Breeze rumors?Conflict with Raq may not be the only thing in store for Kanan -- or anyone else in the family's orbit. Season 3's final scene cuts to Unique standing over his dead brother Ronnie's body, a callback to when Ronnie beat him and left him for dead. He saw Kanan and Raq enter and exit that building where the skirmish (and setup) with Ronnie went down. But his injuries will affect his actions and thought processes, which could be dangerous for everyone. According to Joey Bada$$, we will see a different version of him. "This is not the typical Unique. He's operating from a whole different side of his brain, which is just way more erratic." Joey Bada$$ as Unique in Raising Kanan. StaViewers are used to seeing Unique carry himself in a smooth and strategic manner, but the switch-up was a welcome challenge for the rapper-actor. "It's almost like having a new character, but I looked at it more so as an alter-ego of this character that already existed," said Bada$$.There's really never any leisure time in this show, and rest assured, everyone in the Thomas family will be busy. There are dealings with Stefano, law enforcement's never-ending hunt, family drama, romance and a few possible new business ventures. Marvin and Jukebox's relationship is tested, but Brown says his character realizes this season that his daughter is "more like him than not." Fans will see him "begin to make strides to hopefully prevent her from going into a path that he didn't really sign up for." In addition, Raq's oldest brother will dabble in some risk-tasking that benefits him.As for Lou -- Raq's youngest sibling and Kanan's other uncle -- he still wants to work in music, opening the way for a possible partnership with B-Rilla, played by Pardison Fontaine (aka Pardi). Mays said there are some fun scenes with the rapper and the series also has a love interest for Lou that turns his story arc up a bit compared to other characters. "I feel like my world is the flyest," he said.I asked Penn if he wanted to put rumors to bed about Breeze showing up this season, and he jokingly -- but politely -- declined. However, he shared that they set out to tell certain stories in Raising Kanan and always "leave it somewhat nebulous and cryptic." While that's not a firm no, he added, "What I will say is that I think we deliver in terms of the story we're telling. And I think the fans will be satisfied with what they see and how season 4 plays out." Interpret that as you will. When to watch Raising Kanan on StarzTune in for the season 4 debut of Power Book III: Raising Kanan on Friday, March 7 at midnight ET/9 p.m. PT on the Starz streaming app. If you're subscribed to the linear channel, you can watch the premiere on Friday at 8 p.m. ET/PT. • Crab Memes Amplify Mistaken Ideas about Evolution
    www.scientificamerican.com
OpinionFebruary 27, 20254 min readCrab Memes Amplify Mistaken Ideas about EvolutionMemes about repeated evolution of crabs have been co-opted to joke about technology and ultimate forms. Theyre hilarious, but they oversimplify natural variation, giving bad arguments a scientific veneerBy Joanna Wolfe edited by Dan Vergano Lee Foong Lee/Alamy Stock PhotoYouve seen the memeseverything will eventually evolve into a crab or crab is the ideal formwhile scrolling online. These are parodies of a real scientific concept, carcinization. In biology, this term describes an evolutionary process where forms that look like a crab have appeared at least five times within crustaceans. But in popular culture, safe to say, the word has evolved an entirely new meaning.Since its meme explosion starting in 2019, the word carcinization has become shorthand for a thing that happens multiple times. A new wave of memes came up with intellectual carcinization, describing the situation where multiple people have converged on the same idea. Its delightful to reference crabs when lamenting how multiple car companies independently shift towards SUVs, or how multiple social media influencers weirdly converge on similar styles.Unfortunately, these memes contain some faulty assumptions that lead to public misunderstanding of science. As a biologist who studies carcinization, I worry this confusion carries the seeds of past misuses of evolutionary theory that harmed people. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today. In evolutionary carcinization, multiple groups within decapod crustaceans (shrimps, lobsters and crabs themselves) developed a crablike form with a flat and rounded carapace, and an abdomen folded under the body. King crabs are an entirely different group from the true crabs, separated by nearly 300 million years of evolution, starting within the separate hermit crab group. Although all the lineages that developed the crab form were still within crustaceans (sorry, you wont personally be evolving into a crab), their common ancestors were elongated and perhaps lobsterlike, changing repeatedly over time.Carcinization is just one example of a biological/evolutionary phenomenon called convergent evolution, where unrelated species evolve similar traits in response to similar environmental challenges. Its how wings evolved separately in birds and bats, and camera eyes evolved in vertebrates and octopuses. Convergence isnt limited to form; even the caffeine in your morning coffee or tea evolved separately in those plants (and in at least three other plant lineages)!Rear view of a Red frog spanner crab (Ranina ranina), a crab species which walks with forward motion, an example of decarcinization, from Kochi, Japan.Tony Wu/Nature Picture Library/Alamy Stock PhotoThats the Darwinian version of evolution. But there is a kernel of truth to the notion of intellectual carcinization, because culture also evolves. Peoples behaviors are passed down through the generations by teaching instead of DNA. We can use the same study methods as evolutionary biologists to look at the pattern of how different languages have changed and spread over time, or the adjustments to technologies over generations (a new phone model every year, anyone?). The trends and maybe even some of the processes of cultural evolution resemble Darwinian evolution. But the cause is not the same. The things we believe and make are a consequence of decisions that human beings have made. Why should we care about this distinction? Well, the ancestors of crabs didnt decide to fold up their bodies. As in any organism, mutations produced natural variation in genes. These small genetic changes, some causing visible changes, and some without obvious effect, were passed on through each generation, and filtered by natural selection. This wasnt always a completely random process, because crablike forms might have been selected for under similar circumstances (although in this case, we arent quite sure yet if there is a specific problem the crab body solves that a lobster, for instance, cant). Nevertheless, at least five times over the last 300 million years, crabs proved themselves to be the ultimate form, or it wouldnt have happened, right?Still nope. Some species are on their own adventure, and evolve unique traits shared with no others. For example, the aye aye has shockingly long fingers that no other lemur has; it apparently uses them to pick its nose. If the same adaptations were always optimal, strange ones like this would not exist (or they would be widespread). Even among crabs themselves, the signature round and flat body isnt universal. At least seven lineages that evolved to look crabby some time ago have re-evolved elongated bodies with the abdomen no longer tucked away, a situation nicknamed decarcinization. Some types of decarcinized crabs, like the frog crabs, burrow in the sediment, where it might be beneficial to have a body shaped like a torpedo. So it turns out that the crab form isnt superior. The big problem lies in the metaphor implied by the memes. Some carcinization memes explicitly state that evolution has a goal of turning other species into crabs. Thats wrong. When we use words that imply some organisms are ultimate forms, it implies they are genetically better than others. Not so, because there are millions of species already well adapted to their own environments that havent turned into crabs. The world is always changing, so some species will inevitably go extinct. But extinction isnt a value judgement. If we assume that Darwinian evolution is directed by goals, then we are applying our own biases where they dont belong. Its a slippery slope from Nature loves a crab to If crabs are better than others, then some people might be too. Unfortunately, thats also the basis of eugenics, which used natural selection as a false justification for mass sterilization of people considered undesirable in the last century. To be clear, there is no evidence from the prevalence of convergent evolution to support discrimination or eugenics. We, as humans, can certainly learn from convergent evolution. COVID viruses repeatedly evolve the same mutations in different variants, because they must evade our immune response in order to replicate. We can use this information to help design new drugs and vaccines. Only humans know how to harness the variation in nature to build something of our own choosing. But theres still something important we can learn from crabs (and meme about): an appreciation for the astonishing variation of lifestyles and forms on our planet. This is an opinion and analysis article, and the views expressed by the author or authors are not necessarily those of Scientific American.

Coming after the release of the Nintendo Switch 2, the game will be playable on both generations of Nintendo handhelds. Pokmon Legends Z-A gameplay Set within Lumiose City from Pokemon X and Y, players will explore the incredibly dense city with parkour elements, wild roaming creatures and the street battling with physical movement to avoid damage. Alongside the new battling, players will have to be careful to not get in the way of monsters attacks. To bring wild Pokemon to the city, multiple wild zones have been set up within the sprawling urban environment. Here, youll engage in catching mechanics very similar to those seen in Legends: Arceus, allowing you to sneak around and catch creatures without them noticing. Additionally, the new game appears to be focused around Zygarde, a legendary Pokemon introduced in X and Y but not seen in-game until Sun and Moon. While not confirmed, it appears that players will be able to discover Zygarde cells across Lumiose City. Check out how we test and review games hereBungie has just recently released update 8.2.0.2 for Destiny 2, but currently the developer is making more headlines outside of the game. Recently, theyve rebuked a $200 million lawsuit from former D2 director, and they have also rebuked accusations of plagiarism in court. From this, a popular Destiny 2 YouTuber has responded to Bungie using their video.Destiny 2 YouTuber responds to Bungie using their lore videoBack in October 2024, Game File reported on a lawsuit against Destiny 2 by sci-fi writer, Matthew Kelsey Martineau. The writer accused Bungie of plagiarism with the Red War campaign and the depiction of an enemy faction called the Red Legion. From Bungies rebuttal, the developer confirmed they cannot bring back old content sorely wanted by D2 fans. The vaulted content cannot be brought back, and its been retired due to no longer being compatible with the game.Due to the fact the Red War campaign no longer exists in Destiny 2 and cannot be brought back, Bungie had to cite videos from YouTubers. Per Game File, Bungie told the court in the Martineau lawsuit, they cannot just submit a copy of Destiny 2 as a trial exhibit to establish the facts of their games story.Unable to use their own game for exhibition, Bungie instead used a 10-hour lore video titled The Complete Story of Destiny! From Origins to Final Shape! Light & Dark Saga Lore & Timeline from popular D2 YouTuber, MynameisByf. Bungie also cited Destiny 2: The Red War All Cutscenes (Season 1) by Destin.Destiny 2 players are disappointed content prior to Beyond Light cannot be brought back, and Bungie having to rely on YouTubers is considered proof that vaulting content was a bad idea. This is because huge chunks of gameplay are missing, and a large portion of the overall story is missing, too, which is especially bad for potential newcomers. In response to Bungie using their video that has over 2 million views, MynameisByf said on X, If I had a nickel for every time Bungie mentioned me in a legal case Id have 2 nickels Its not a lot but its weird that it happened twice. To achieve that effect, Johnson expected it to take just a little bit of decorating here and furnishing there. But as I worked with Lauren, it became clear we needed to make some impactful changes to bring the vision to life, the homeowner says. These included peeling back the ceilings to expose the natural wood, installing warm timber cabinetry, and adding texture with patinated copper and rich bluestone. The design of this home was deeply influenced by its surroundings, says Garrett, who created a palette of textured linens, woven rattans, and soft seafoam greens to capture the coastal spirit, working with Requiem Builders for the execution. The vision was to create the ultimate beach housea retreat that feels both serene and inviting, where Daisy could seamlessly transition from hosting lively gatherings with friends and family to enjoying quiet solitude after a long day by the ocean. The living room is a warm, cozy oasis that frames the view. The Funghi lantern from Charlap Hyman & Herrero, hand-painted by artist Pilar Almon, glows like an orange moon, casting a halo over the 1970s French Shogun coffee table by Roger Capron and the vintage Tuareg mat from North Africa. Designer Lauren Garrett sourced a 16th-century Aubusson tapestry from her own boutique Galerie Was, as a backdrop for the custom sofa. These thoughtful contrastsbetween old and new, bold and understatedreflect Daisys adventurous and creative spirit, making the home uniquely hers, says the interior designer.Anyone who knows Johnson knows her home is an ever-evolving cabinet of curiosities, a shrine to keepsakes from happy moments gone by. I love picking up little treasures when I travel, whether its the beautiful ceramic mug I brought back from India or the vintage Playboy magazine I found on a road trip in Utah, featuring Bo Derek and an orangutan on the cover, she muses. There are other novelties, too, like the small silver box she picked up in Colorado, filled with photographs from her first road trip with her partner, which sits on the coffee table next to a book by Duane Michalsan artist she credits with sparking her love of photography. On the shelf beside her records are delicate white shells, salvaged from the beach by her partners mother. Theres also the collection of drawings by my best friend, Katie Schecter, an incredibly talented artist and musician. I convinced her to sell me a few of her personal drawings, and now they hang in my hallway, where I pass them every morning, Johnson says with a smile. All in all, the home is a collection of memories that reflect the contours of her life. As she puts it: Ive always believed a house is just a structure until you fill it with pieces of yourself.
