• Does Time Work Differently in the Quantum Realm?

February 26, 20255 min readIn the Quantum Realm, Times Arrow Might Fly in Two DirectionsScientists studying a centuries-old mystery of physics suggest two arrows of time control the evolution of quantum systemsBy Gayoung Lee edited by Lee Billings MirageC/Getty ImagesIf a cup of water spills on the floor, the water cant unspillthat is, its inconceivable that each water molecule would exactly reverse its course to slip back into the cup. To do so would be to turn back timesomething that, as far as we know, cant be done. The water either spills or it doesnt, but if it does, itll stay that way.In that way, time as we experience it is asymmetric. We have memories of the past rather than the future, and spilled water doesnt flow back to its cup, just as an arrow that has been let fly doesnt return to its bow. In our everyday lives, the arrow of time goes only in one direction: forward. We know [this] is something thats part of our common experience, says Andrea Rocco, a theoretical physicist at the University of Surrey in England. But how exactly times arrow arises is less clear to physicists, in part because the math they use to describe most of the world makes no distinction between time that moves forward and time that moves backward; either direction is perfectly viable, as far as their equations are concerned. On supporting science journalismIf you're enjoying this article, consider supporting our award-winning journalism by subscribing. By purchasing a subscription you are helping to ensure the future of impactful stories about the discoveries and ideas shaping our world today.Relatedly, the concept of time becomes somewhat illusory in the absence of change. For instance, if our cup of water was held in stasis in a magic, perfectly insulated and physically impervious box floating in deep space, this system would seem the same whether it was examined five years ago or five millennia from now. So which way is times arrow flying inside the magic stasis box? For such isolated systems, time is thus considered to be symmetric; only when it is open to influence from the external environment is this symmetry broken, whether via water evaporating or the cup tipping over to spill its contents. And yet open and isolated systems are inherently linked. Even if our cup of water was isolated from the external world, its molecules would still be randomly jostled by microscopic effectschanges that potentially break times symmetry, like the ticking of the cosmic clock. So why does this discrepancy exist, and what does it imply about the validity of the models physicists use to study the role of time in the reality we experience?Different researchers have tackled these questions in different ways, but Rocco and his colleagues revisited some of the math behind the inconsistency to see if an alternative approach could resolve the apparent asymmetry. Their conclusions, recently published in Scientific Reports, detail the existence of not one but two opposing arrows of time within open quantum systems. This is a bit like if our water cup were precariously balanced on a knife-edge: it could topple to spill down either side, each side being an opposite-facing arrow of time. But the cup falling one way versus the other doesnt make the water spill differently. Either way, mathematically speaking, the end result is exactly the sameit preserves the symmetry for both possible instances. In a sense, we are stuck in this universe in which time actually goes in one direction, Rocco explains. But the equations of motion that we are considering would have allowed the universe to go in the other direction. This way, as the conventional understanding goes, both instances display time symmetry without requiring the assumption that some external influence from the environment is imposing or defining an arrow of time, Rocco says. In other words, the researchers work suggests that times arrow is a spontaneous feature of an open quantum system rather than one that is set by its history. The new work adds to some interesting questions about what physicists deem relevant in their studies of time. Michele Campisi, a theoretical physicist at the Italian National Research Councils Nanoscience Institute, who was not involved in the study, commends the paper for its bold take but notes that it also implies a strange, subjective malleability to the origins of times arrow. The hows and whys of the way time flies are a reflection of an approximation, he says, dependent on a physicists preferred interpretation of quantum mechanics itselfof which there are several. Ones view of a quantum system is set to some degree by ones expectations, he says. For instance, a more global view of events could also see a purported open system as just another part of a much larger, isolated one in which complications with time asymmetry wouldnt occur at all.Nevertheless, this paper demonstrates how our quest to understand the quantum realm is still far from complete, says James Cresser, a now retired professor of physics. This [helps] shake up a commonly held idea that certain equations describing dissipative behavior are not time-reversal invariant and are therefore a theoretical indicator of a particular physical state of affairs, Cresser says. (Cresser was thanked for illuminating discussions in the study and had taught its lead author Thomas Guff as an undergraduate, but he did not directly contribute to the work.)For instance, the way water acts when it spills is akin to a type of dissipative behavior in quantum mechanics and thermodynamics called decoherence, in which a system progressively spreads out, or decoheres, and loses information. In this example, the information is the particular arrangement of water molecules previously inside the cup. Dissipative processes are considered asymmetric with regard to time because the initial configuration ends up irrelevant to the final state of affairs, explains Nicole Yunger Halpern, a physicist at the National Institute of Standards and Technology, who was not a part of the new study. But even this kind of interpretation necessarily depends on our expectations of how a system must evolve as energy flows through it. For example, if we were to see two movies, one in which the water spills and another in which the water preternaturally returns to the cup, wed be inclined to say that the second movie is illusory and impossible and that it is merely the first played backward. Thus, an asymmetric arrow of time is, in some ways, an emergent phenomenon, Yunger Halpern says. Sometimes people call [this] a psychological arrow of time. All that said, perhaps the concept of timearrow or nois nothing but scaffolding for the human brain to grasp at as we try to label all the events that take place in the world around us, Cresser says. But the events themselves dont rely on the scaffolding. And what were doing with these equations is applying one kind of temporal scaffolding as compared to another possible temporal scaffolding. In that case, our questions about time might never have answersmaking them, well, timeless. We are unavoidably buried in timethat is a profound part of our existence that we can never, ever escape, Cresser says.

  • Marvel Rivals Vanguard problem is ruining the games balance

Rest assured, all imagery and advice is unique and original. Check out how we test and review games hereWith Season 1.5 of Marvel Rivals well under way, fans are speaking out about the persistent issues with game balance and skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) that are threatening to overshadow the hero shooter. This 6v6 game has been engaging millions of players since its 2024 launch by NetEase Games thanks to its roster of more than 37 Marvel icons; nevertheless, subsequent patches have shown weaknesses in the games competitive system. Many fans have voiced their frustrations with the matchmaking system, claiming that it is unfair and forces talented players to play with teammates that arent a good fit, or puts them through terrible losing streaks. This dissatisfaction, along with the unreliability of the servers, has led many to demand that NetEase revamp SBMM in order to make it more accurate to players abilities and guarantee fair matches. However, what adds more fuel to the fire is an unfair number of Duelists compared to Vanguards in the game. With twenty Duelists, like Winter Soldier and Iron Man, who do damage, the eight Vanguards, like Hulk and The Thing, feel like a footnote in the lineup, which has further frustrated players. Marvel Rivals players slam NetEase devs for uneven ratio between character rolesAccording to Marvel Rivals players like Jarrys88, the imbalance between the number of Duelists vs Vanguards encourages a Duelist-heavy meta, where nimble damage dealers take precedence over the more traditionally tanky frontline protectors that teams rely on to provide stability. There are more DPS than there are tanks or healers in Rivals. Image by VideoGamer. The recent inclusion of Human Torch and The Thing to the game in Season 1.5 has failed to alleviate the discontent as in Season 1 alone, the game added two Duelists, one Vanguard and one Strategist. Furthermore, players continue to choose flashier Duelists over Strategists and Vanguards, leading to chaotic quickplay matches and are now requesting that NetEase increase the number of Vanguards, bringing back tactical depth and team synergy in Marvel Rivals as they seek parity in the roster. For some, the more worrying issue is the flood of incoming leaked heroes like Blade, who is again rumored to be a Duelist and will soon be added as a playable character to the roster right before Season 2 chimes in. Besides that, other leaked heroes like Deadpool and Phoenix are also speculated to be DPS characters who will bring their aggressive abilities to the battlefield. At the same time, players are also arguing that characters like Mister Fantastic and Wolverine could easily have been classified as Vanguards due to their tankier nature and damage dealing capabilities, but are left in the Duelist category due to low base health. While NetEase plans to add more heroes with upcoming Marvel Rivals seasons, fans could only hope to see if their favorite leaked hero is tankier enough to fit the Vanguard bill, or will it be just another hero in a flock full of Duelists. However, it is the steady stream of character leaks that has truly excited the community. Dataminers discovered leaks about impending heroes and villains like Emma Stone, Cyclops, and Phoenix, causing widespread speculation on their roles. The anticipation is strong as Season 1.5 nears its end and inches closer to Season 2, which is said to be themed after the Hellfire Gala from the comics. Among those, one of the most bizarre rumors is about Deadpool, The Merc with a Mouth, who is riding high on the popularity ofthe MCU film Deadpool and Wolverine. The character has been revealed in leaked voice lines and files, causing a frenzy among fans around his arrival.Marvel Rivals voice interaction leaks reveal Deadpool arriving soon in future seasonsAccording to the latest leaks by renowned dataminer X0X Leak, voice interactions of the current roster with Deadpool have been unveiled and confirm the arrival of the Merc with a Mouth to the game. • Satya Nadella says AI is yet to find a killer app that matches the combined impact of email and Excel
    www.theregister.com
While the likes of OpenAI and Alibaba are talking up artificial general intelligence (AGI) capable of replacing humans, Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella argues AI's success should be measured by its benefit to the global economy which may come once the technology finds a killer app to match the impact of email or Excel."Us self-claiming some AGI milestone, that's just nonsensical benchmark hacking," the chief executive said during an appearance on podcaster Dwarkesh Patel's YouTube show this month.Nadella thinks a better benchmark for AI's success should be its ability to boost a country's gross domestic product. "When we say: 'Oh, this is like the industrial revolution,' let's have that industrial revolution type of growth. That means to me, 10 percent, seven percent for the developed world. Inflation adjusted, growing at five percent, that's the real marker."Few nations achieved that pace of growth in 2024.Nadella suggested that growth hasnt eventuated because it's going to take time before folks understand how to use AI effectively, assuming they find a use for it just as it took some years for the personal computer to find its feet."Just imagine how a multinational corporation like us did forecasts pre-PC, and email, and spreadsheets. Faxes went around, somebody then got those faxes and then did an inter-office memo that then went around, and people entered numbers, and then ultimately a forecast came out maybe just in time for the next quarter," Nadella explained.Who said my life's goal is to triage my email?"Then somebody said: 'Hey, I'm just going to take an Excel spreadsheet, put it in an email, send it around, people will go edit it, and I'll have a forecast.' The entire forecasting business process changed because the work artifact and the workflow changed. That is what needs to happen with AI being introduced into knowledge work," the CEO said.Investors who have watched Microsoft spend billions on AI infrastructure, and announce plans to spend tens of billions more, may find Nadellas view that artificial intelligence is yet to find a niche concerning.Even after AI finds its place at work, Nadella doesn't think it will outright replace knowledge workers."Don't conflate knowledge worker with knowledge work," he said. "The knowledge work of today could probably be automated, [but] who said my life's goal is to triage my email?"Instead, he argues AI agents will allow workers to focus on higher-value tasks. Whether this is actually how it'll play out, or whether enterprises will take this as an opportunity to reduce costs by cutting staff remains to be seen.Do you have any reservations or fears about the way your organization is using AI? Tell us in confidence here, or via Signal securely: tobiasmann.01Even if AGI or so called "AI superintelligence" theoretical machines with cognitive capabilities that exceed human brainpower turn out to be more than hype, Nadella still doesn't expect them to replace humans anytime soon due to legal issues."Today, you cannot deploy these intelligences unless and until there's someone indemnifying it as a human," he said.

LegendaryChris Pratt seemingly confirms Star-Lord will be back soon, as far too many MCU characters face oblivion with post-credits scenes going nowherePart of the lucky ones.Image credit: Marvel Studios News by Fran Ruiz Contributor Published on Feb. 27, 2025 Avengers: Doomsday is shooting soon, which means everyone who's recently shown up in the MCU is being asked whether they're in it and Secret Wars or are staying out of the Multiverse Saga's two-part finale. Now, Chris Pratt is adding fuel to the fire by plainly stating that Star-Lord is nowhere near done yet.Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, which, if you ask around, is considered the last really good movie Marvel Studios put out before things went off the rails, marked the end for James Gunn's take on the outer-space superhero group. However, an all-new Guardians of the Galaxy roster quickly emerged and Peter Quill aka Star-Lord was confirmed to come back at some point in the future after he returned to Earth and found out his grandpa was still alive. To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Of course, everyone instantly started thinking about Star-Lord officially joining Earth's Mightiest Heroes the next time an extinction-level event threatened the universe. Well, after his latest appearance in Jimmy Kimmel Live to discuss Netflix's The Electric State (also directed by the Russo Brothers), that seems very likely."Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 3 was the last time you saw Star-Lord and there was a promise that Star-Lord would return. All I can say is we will make good on that promise. I feel like theres a Marvel sniper somewhere. I will say no more," he stated. Needless to say, conversations probably happened long ago and he fully knows what he's walking into sooner rather than later. Some might think this was a given, but with recently introduced characters like Eternals or Shang-Chi having a pretty uncertain future ahead of them (though we're expecting the latter to show up as an Avenger), it seems that no one outside the core characters is safe from being blipped away until the next saga because Marvel Studios (and the target audience) doesn't have enough time for everything it's been setting up during the post-Endgame years. This also extends to TV-only (so far) characters like Moon Knight, who had a notable first season with a solid hook for a potential season 2 but has gone nowhere since early 2022. That hasn't stopped Marvel from setting up even more story beats that are thrown into the void, such as Channing Tatum's Gambit maybe coming back at some point.

  • Wonder Woman being canned reportedly followed Monolith planning a nemesis systemy new IP Warner Bros didn't want, then doing nemesis systemy Wonder Woman, then God of War-ish Wonder Woman
    www.vg247.com
SighWonder Woman being canned reportedly followed Monolith planning a nemesis systemy new IP Warner Bros didn't want, then doing nemesis systemy Wonder Woman, then God of War-ish Wonder WomanA winding road wading through what sounds like pretty terrible "classic executive indecision" soup.Image credit: Sony/Monolith News by Mark Warren Senior Staff Writer Published on Feb. 27, 2025 Following the recent news that Warner Bros. had cancelled the Wonder Woman game that'd long been in the works at Shadow of Mordor developer Monolith Productions, and shut down that studio along with two others, Bloomberg's Jason Schreier has now shared a bit more context about the events that led to all of that happening.Basically, it sounds like exactly the kind of corporate indecision fest you'd expect, with the seeds for where Monolith ended up with Wonder Woman having reportedly been planted back in 2021, when Warner Bros. said no to a new IP that it'd just kinda been letting the studio plan, even though the publisher allgedly wasn't interested in new IP.To see this content please enable targeting cookies. Speaking on Kinda Funny Games Daily, Schreier dug a bit deeper into the chain of events at the studio following the arrival of 2017's Middle-earth: Shadow of War, stating that Monolith had then begun planning a new IP codenamed Legacy, which would be a "procedural narrative thing experimenting with some of the ideas they'd explored with the nemesis system" in those LOTR games. However, there was one big problem about this thing Monolith spent about three years working on, according to Schreier. "During this time, its kind of clear to people at Warner Bros and [at] Burbank in their HQ that this game is not going to happen, because people at Warner Bros are not interested in new IP," he said.Watch on YouTubeSo, a weird period in which kind of meaningless and confusing meetings were happening reportedly ensued, during which there was "refusal to make decisions", before the order came down to can the new IP in 2021. Why did it happen that way? Well, Schreier alleges earlier in the that chat that he's been told recently departed Warner Bros. Games boss David Haddad's tenure featured plenty of "classic executive indecision, people refusing to make calls, because making calls means exposing yopurself to risk, and if you make calls that expose yourself to risk then you [could] lose your cushy job".Once the new IP was cancelled, a lot of Monolith's leadership departed, and the studio had to stumble on with Wonder Woman, first in a way that incorporated a sort of Wonder Woman-ised interpretation of the nemesis system as has previously been reported, then as a "God of War-style more traditional action game". "By then, it was kind of too late," Schreier added, "especially because last year was so bad for the Warner Bros. organisation". So, a damn shame, especially since that new IP sounds like it could have been pretty interesting.

The teams innovative use of technology, particularly 3D design and motion graphics, has captivated audiences and garnered industry recognition. Engaging Fans from the Start The Amelie Arena entrance features a new striking 3D exterior display, which has already become a Tampa Bay landmark.By leveraging 3D technology and advanced lighting techniques, the team creates visually striking experiences that captivate fans and elevate the overall game-day atmosphere. The 3D exterior display not only enhances the arenas aesthetic appeal but also serves as a dynamic platform for showcasing team animations, sponsorship packages, and promotes upcoming events. We want fans to have a full experience the moment they step onto our plaza. Were creating memories for our fans. Theyre in our world. Hunter Perkins Technical Production Manager, Vinik Sports Group / Tampa Bay Lightning Its hard not to be amazed by the lifelike helicopter seemingly flying out of the building, a truly awe-inspiring sight that sets the stage for an unforgettable experience. To create the eye-catching 3D experiences, the team relies heavily onGreyscalegorilla to elevate the quality of their work. Leveraging pre-built assets, like textures and materials, saves countless hours of work. Delve into how Vinik Sports Group utilizes Greyscalegorilla to elevate their game night presentations, from jaw-dropping 3D animations to captivating real-time graphics. How do you create an engaging fan experience? We prioritize 3D for high-impact moments that will be showcased on television or large screens. For example, we might create a 3D animation for a key player introduction or a special moment during the game. For shorter, less prominent graphics, we often opt for 2D solutions, such as PNG renders with added effects in post-production. During the game were getting statistics constantly how fast a shot was, how fast players are moving, how many shots there have been so theres lots of tie-in to that as far as game presentation goes, and bringing that data in and finding interesting ways to present it to fans so they have access to a little bit more information. For example, during pre-game skates, we display computer graphics featuring player statistics. We might show a players headshot alongside their season goal total. How does Greyscalegorilla fit into your teams workflow? Our in-house team is project based, and we incorporate Greyscalegorilla in anything we can, honestly. Its very easy to use. We create the in-house broadcast package for the Tampa Bay Lightning title intros, promotional templates, lower-thirds, replay wipes and any other extra requests for social, web, or something that airs on TV. We rely on Greyscalegorilla to help us speed-up our process. We are a very fast-paced environment for example, the next five days, we have three games. So sometimes we dont have a month to create a project. Sometimes its one or two weeks. Sometimes its a day. Can you share a specific example of how Greyscalegorilla has helped you? When we were in the Stanley Cup championships, I remember lighting, texturing, and rendering the Stanley Cup logo and animating it up and down for one of our boards. I found out later that fans were taking photos in front of it, and, really, that is why were doing this. We are creating memories for our fans. And Greyscalegorilla makes that job easier. We are creating memories for our fans. And Greyscalegorilla makes that job easier. Darlene Sanchez Motion Graphics Creative Manager, Vinik Sports Group / Tampa Bay Lightning What are your favorite Greyscalegorilla tools and assets? I love the textures honestly. The frost surface imperfection textures are what compelled our org to acquire a Teams account, after I watched a tutorial on making realistic-looking frost utilizing Greyscalegorilla. I was able to use the textures immediately, adding frost to a floating puck that was flying across the screen. Another example, I have a hockey helmet for our third jersey look, its a matte black, and I thought it would be cool to have the visor frosted up. So, I just opened up Greyscalegorilla and started plugging in frost textures. Now, every time we have a game and were utilizing 3D helmets, whether for us or our opponents, we can repurpose the effect. So, obviously the textures are a huge help. We also use a lot of metal materials inside of Greyscalegorilla Plus. And I love the Area Light Maps that we can just plug in to add that extra spice. Thats definitely one of my favorites. How do you balance creating a consistent brand look across all your graphics while also ensuring each game has a unique feel? In the summer, we spend some time creating our campaign package that we templatize, with different elements for each game, and put on display for the fans. Thats what our signage helps with. Take, for example, when were making bespoke assets for specific games. Like theme nights. 50% of our games are technically theme nights, and for all of those, there are bespoke assets created. 50% of our games are theme nights which require new visuals. Darlene Sanchez Motion Graphics Creative Manager, Vinik Sports Group / Tampa Bay Lightning Every year we add another theme night. Hockey Fights Cancer night. First Responders night. Military Appreciation night. Halloween is a huge one. Its increasing every year, so were making more and more bespoke assets and deliverables to display on screens throughout the arena and on the big external sign outside the arena and in marketing materials. So, these themed elements, we add them into the previously mentioned campaign package. We essentially rebuild everything according to the theme. Lower thirds. Replay wipes. Title intros. Promotional elements. Any high-rez screenshots we can provide to our marketing team and its graphic designers to create a cohesive look. Again, Greyscalegorilla makes that job easier. It helps speed up our process so much. Tell us about your Best Theme Night award. Winning Best Theme Night at the Idea Conference was a huge honor. Every NHL, NBA, and NFL team comes together after voting throughout the year for whos got the best promotional video. Its almost like, you know, the Oscars for sports. We submitted the work we did for Gasparilla Night, which took place during Gasparilla Pirate Festival. Its a popular annual event, special to Tampa, with parades and parties and the like, and, really, its just an excuse for people to dress up as pirates and have fun. Over the last three seasons, we had a couple of games that lined up with the festivities. So, we had to find ways to convince fans to still come to the arena after partying all day. So, we created a pirate-themed 3D package that we submitted alongside everything else we do as game presentation, like video features and live activations. And then we actually won! Ultimately, its work like this that has cemented our reputation as being among the top two NHL organizations as far as our game presentation entertainment. Were second only to Las Vegas, but we always say its because they have all the money to buy all the toys, But well take it, because, while we have a smaller budget, we do a lot with what we have. So, to be up here with them is a big deal for us. Greyscalegorilla Teams is Trusted by the Best in the Game Leave a Comment:Cancel This site uses Akismet to reduce spam.
