• A top nutrition scientist shares the gut-friendly foods he always keeps in his kitchen to make eating healthy easy

A top nutrition scientist keeps his kitchen stocked with nutritious foods. These include frozen spinach, lentil pasta, kimchi, and miso paste.Having healthy foods on hand makes it easier to whip up gut-friendly meals.Tim Spector, a top nutrition scientist, tries to eat 30 different plants a week for his gut health but they're not all fresh, as you might expect. In his cookbook, "Food For Life," which is due to be published in the US and Canada on May 27, Spector calls jarred, tinned, and frozen foods the "unsung heroes of eating well," because they are affordable and nutritious. So Spector not only stocks his fridge with whole foods that make healthy eating easy, but his pantry, freezer, and kitchen counters, too. Here's what the epidemiologist at Kings College London and the cofounder of the nutrition company ZOE keeps in his kitchen.Grains, tinned vegetables, and healthy flavorings in his pantrySpector's cupboards always contain a variety of grains, such as buckwheat, spelt, pearl barley, and quinoa, which are great alternatives to rice and pasta, he wrote in the cookbook. But he keeps wholegrain and lentil pasta on hand because he's a "big pasta fan," he told Business Insider. As many varieties of beans and pulses as he can find are also on his grocery list, because they are affordable sources of protein, fiber, and nutrients.Spector's recipes often call for tinned and jarred vegetables, such as tomatoes, sweetcorn, olives, and artichokes, which tend to be cheaper than fresh vegetables and have a longer shelf life. But watch out for additives, Spector said, such as salt or preservatives.Spector also keeps miso and nutritional yeast to hand as alternatives to bouillon cubes, which tend to be highly processed. He previously told BI that he tries to avoid ultra-processed foods to care for his gut health.Vegetables, fruits, and fermented foods in his fridgeThere are always plenty of vegetables, fruits, and leafy greens in Spector's fridge, as well as a small amount of "traditional cheese," he wrote, which is fermented. More research is needed to confirm the health benefits of fermented foods, but a 2022 review of studies linked them to a lower risk of type two diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Spector keeps vegetables in his cupboards, fridge, and freezer. StefaNikolic/Getty Images Fermentation "experiments," such as homemade kefir and pickles, can also be found in his fridge, as well as miso and gochujang: two flavorful fermented pastes that add flavor to dishes.Spector recommends stocking the "four Ks" in your fridge kefir, kombucha, kimchi, and 'kraut (sauerkraut). He previously shared three tips for eating more fermented foods with BI.Berries, soup, and soffritto in his freezerThere are yet more vegetables in Spector's freezer, including frozen cubes of spinach, peas, and mushrooms. He also has a bag of soffritto which is chopped vegetables (usually onions, carrots, and celery) that can be used as a base for many dishes and frozen herbs to flavor his home-cooked meals.Spector keeps mixed berries and fruit in the freezer too, which he uses in his go-to healthy breakfast of yogurt with toppings."I always try to make sure I have a nice, thick, Italian-style vegetable soup in the freezer that I can simply defrost and reheat when I'm pressed for time," he wrote. For example, the Minestrone soup recipe in his book.Fruit and nuts on the counterSpector keeps a fruit bowl where he can see it on his kitchen counter, as well as containers of mixed nuts. That way, if he's tempted to snack, he's more likely to go for the healthy ones that he can see.He previously told BI about his "diversity jar" that is full of different nuts and seeds, which he keeps on hand to sprinkle on his meals and help him eat 30 plants a week.

  • Netflix's 'Running Point' is based on LA Lakers owner Jeanie Buss. Here's how the show compares to real life.
    www.businessinsider.com
Netflix's 'Running Point' is a fictional comedy about a woman who becomes the owner of a basketball team. The series is based on the life of Jeanie Buss, owner of the LA Lakers.Mindy Kaling, the show's creator, said Buss came up with the idea for a comedy show about her life.Netflix's "Running Point," a sports comedy about a woman who becomes the owner of an LA-based basketball team, may seem familiar to fans of the Los Angeles Lakers. That's because the show is loosely based on the life of Jeanie Buss, the team's president."Running Point" is the latest series to examine the legacy of theLA Lakers, the second-most successful team in the NBA. In 2022, Max produced a biopic series about the lives of key players and executives at the NBA team in the 1980s, and Hulu released a 10-episode documentary about the team's rise.Netflix takes a new approach to portraying the team's history, focusing on Buss' life and her journey to being taken seriously in a male-dominated sport.Mindy Kaling, the show's creator, told ExtraTV in an interview published on Tuesday that Buss asked her to make a show about her life."She approached me like five years ago to want to do this show," Kaling said. "She loved 'The Office' and so she's someone who has a very serious job but doesn't take herself seriously."She could have said like, 'I want the show to be a drama, and I want my character to be like hugely important, and everyone admires them.' But she's like, 'No, I want it to be funny.'"Kaling added that Buss gave her and the writing team full access to her life and allowed them to interview her at any point to make "Running Point.""Running Point" is still a fictional show, so many elements of Buss' life have likely been changed. In real life, Buss took over the LA Lakers from her father, not her brotherThe character based on Buss, played by Kate Hudson, is called Isla Gordon and runs a team called the Los Angeles Waves. Isla has three brothers who are part of the team's executive branch, while Buss' has five brothers and a sister who work in multiple sectors within the Lakers.Buss became the owner of the Lakers in 2013 after the death of her father, Jerry Buss, the former owner. But in the show, Gordon takes on the role after her older is in a car accident.Gordon is not the only character directly inspired by a real-life person in the show. Linda Rambis is the inspiration for Brenda Song's character, Ali Lee, in "Running Point." Charley Gallay / Getty Images for Netflix Brenda Song plays Gordon's friend, AliLee, who is based on Linda Rambis, the manager of special projects at the Lakers and a long-term friend of Buss. Both Buss and Rambis are executive producers on "Running Point.""Some of the situations seem outlandish but nothing surprises me that happens in the world of professional basketball," Buss told The Associated Press at the series' premiere event in LA on February 13. "We've seen everything."

  • Monster Hunter Wilds review prepare for the most epic fight of your life
    www.theguardian.com
After riding through a desert storm on a feathered steed, dust and rain whipping around you, you arrive at a mountain pass where purple crystals frost the walls. The weather still rages outside, but its calm within the cavern that lies at the end of the path. You can tell, from the environment, what kind of creature lives here: the Rey Dau, a horned wyvern that commands the elements.Youve seen it before, when it appeared unexpectedly while you were out on another expedition, descending from lightning-streaked skies to sink its claws into an unfortunate pack of shaggy, lion-like creatures. You werent strong enough to face it then, but you are now. Hopefully. The fight that ensues is nail-biting. You have to pull out every trick you know to wear it down, trying to dive out of the path of powerful bolts of electricity, as well as the wyverns horns and teeth. You fire your grappling hook at a rocky outcrop hanging from the ceiling, bringing it down on the creature. You whistle for your mount, leaping from its back on to the dragons head, clinging on and stabbing with a dagger as it tries to smash you against the walls. You are sent flying, you are fried, you are stomped upon, but you cling on and keep fighting, chugging restorative potions at every opportunity.Watch the trailer for Monster Hunter Wilds. Then an even bigger predator appears from nowhere, takes the monster youve just fought desperately for 25 minutes in its jaws and tosses it around like a rag doll. Take a good look at it: thats what youll be fighting next.Monster Hunter Wilds 15-hour story is a series of escalating epic battles against ever bigger and more ferocious creatures. It does not let up for a second. Within a few hours, you will have fought an awful giant spider, a sinuous sand-dragon and a disgusting, overgrown oil-chicken. Later, you will face a furious fire-ape and a dragon that shoots lightning from its face, plus particularly nasty and dangerous versions of beasts from the previous 20 years worth of Monster Hunter games. Its quite literally all killer, no filler, a far cry from the slow and ponderous older games, in which you had to spend hours gathering mushrooms and fighting raptors before you got anywhere near a wyvern. The battles are relentlessly awesome; when a monster fell, I would let out a breath that I didnt even realise I had be holding in. No game has ever made me feel like Monster Hunter does, with the possible exception of Dark Souls and its brethren. The adrenaline of these fights, the peerless, perfectly balanced feel of the oversized weapons and the sheer viciousness and majesty of the creatures makes this game feel incomparably thrilling, even though I have been playing it in some form since I was a teenager. And it is just so much better-looking than it was back then: not just the monsters, but also their huge natural habitats, which ripple and teem with life. The monsters huge natural habitats teem with life. Photograph: CapcomI must admit that towards the end of Wilds story I felt some disappointment start to creep in. I had enjoyed nearly every one of these creature clashes, which are wrapped in dramatic, beautifully rendered cutscenes that spin a cool-looking if rather insubstantial story. But I hadnt had much of a challenge. Admittedly, I have a lot of experience with these games, but I am used to getting eaten or torn to bits a few times by a new monster before I conquer it; in the entirety of Wilds campaign, I was knocked out only twice. It turns out, however, that Wilds story is essentially a 15-hour interactive tutorial on what makes Monster Hunter awesome, a rollercoaster of fighting thrills presumably designed to sell newcomers on the concept and give veterans a taste of the scale and visual splendour that Capcoms modern game engine has brought to their favourite series. The real fun starts afterwards. After taking on the biggest, baddest creature I had ever seen, in the final quest of the story, I was dumped back into a base camp in the jungle and sent out to capture a small, fire-spitting raptor. I was immediately humbled; embarrassingly, it knocked me out, because I had become lazy.skip past newsletter promotionSign up to Pushing ButtonsFree weekly newsletterKeza MacDonald's weekly look at the world of gamingPrivacy Notice: Newsletters may contain info about charities, online ads, and content funded by outside parties. Its about teaming up with other hunters, complementing each others play styles, as more experienced players help the rookies through. Being a friends Monster Hunter mentor is one of the most rewarding multiplayer gaming experiences out there. This game cant be reduced to a series of fights. It is a world, an ecosystem, a community of players. You are part hunter, part nature researcher. Wilds leans too far towards frictionless fun in its story, but once I was free to explore more I started to feel more connected to the habitat. Instead of being guided by the nose or by my ostrich-dino steed from battle to battle I was climbing up into the canopy and scouting for creatures, getting my binoculars out, discovering hidden corners for campsites and underwater caves full of useful materials. I found I had to switch weapons more frequently, upgrade my armour, reacquaint myself with the baffling array of jewels and doodads that gave my hunter useful extra skills. You could pick Wilds up as a newcomer and have a tremendous time playing through the story. You could stop there and it would still be worth the price of admission. But I will be playing it for a long time yet.

  • Marvel Rivals leak points to Deadpool and at least two more new characters
    metro.co.uk
Marvel Rivals leak points to Deadpool and at least two more new charactersMichael BeckwithPublished February 27, 2025 4:41pmUpdated February 27, 2025 4:41pm Its a matter of when, not if (Activision)A new wave of datamined voice lines for Marvel Rivals has fans expecting Deadpool to join the roster, alongside two others.Since its launch in December, Marvel Rivals is one of the few recent attempts at a live service game to actually prove popular.Even though publisher NetEase opted to lay off the entire American staff, Its been an undeniable hit and given Overwatch 2 some much needed competition.Given it features a wide array of Marvel heroes and villains, the possibilities for future playable characters are limitless. If someone as relatively obscure as Luna Snow can make it into the starting roster, it seems anyone could turn up.That said, the most popular and recognisable icons are likely the priority for NetEase, with a recent leak strongly hinting that Marvels mouthy mercenary Deadpool is on his way. This is according to datamined voice lines shared by a dedicated X account for Marvel Rivals leaks called RivalsLeaks. Although its somewhat open to interpretation its believed the lines confirm not just Deadpool, but also MODOK and Hit-Monkey as playable characters. The voice lines arent from the characters themselves but existing characters, like Spider-Man and The Punisher, reacting to their presence. In the case of Deadpool, Spider-Mans line is, Great, were saving the world and here comes the loosest cannon. Just an observation.Although the line itself doesnt explicitly mention Deadpool, its hard to think of many other characters that would elicit this kind of reaction out of the otherwise friendly Spider-Man.The hints at MODOK and Hit-Monkey are more clear cut, with The Punisher literally saying, So long, monkey. Technically there are other monkey characters in the Marvel universe but none that are as (relatively) prominent.A number of references to someone having a giant head could also conceivably be someone else, such as Hulk villain The Leader who is in the new Captain America movie, but MODOK is the obvious choice as hes basically only a big giant head, with little tiny arms and legs.Deadpool was already rumoured to be coming to the game anyway, thanks to datamining efforts this past December, where it was found that one of Wolverines skins is his costume from the Deadpool & Wolverine movie and a spray depicting half of a heart, shaped like Wolverines mask, sparked theories of the other half being a Deadpool spray.Even without any leaks or datamines, itd be more shocking if Deadpool wasnt added to Marvel Rivals. Love him or hate him, he is one of Marvels most popular and recognisable characters and has made appearances in other modern Marvel games whenever possible, such as Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 and Midnight Suns. The real question is whether Deadpool is intended to be part of the next batch of characters. With the exception of season one (which added the entire Fantastic Four), each season of Marvel Rivals will introduce two new characters.More TrendingWith season two theorised to be themed around the Hellfire Gala, an X-Men storyline from the comics, that would be an appropriate time to add Deadpool, given his strong ties to the X-Men.However, there are also theories that the next season will add vampire hunter Blade (who already has an in-game model and appeared in a recent trailer for a new map) and X-Men member Emma Frost, a key figure in the Hellfire Gala storyline, whose inclusion leaked through datamined voice lines as well. Our guess is that Deadpool might not be a season two inclusion and is probably being worked on for later. There is the possibility that any data referencing him is outdated and NetEase changed its mind about including him but, again, Deadpools too popular and iconic not to add to the game. There has been speculation that all the character leaks are actually fake plants by NetEase, in an effort to troll dataminers. However, IGN asked Marvel Games executive producer Danny Koo if this was the case and he bluntly denied it, saying, No. We would rather spend our time developing the actual game. The starting roster was already stacked and the list of playable characters stands to get much bigger (NetEase)Emailgamecentral@metro.co.uk, leave a comment below, follow us on Twitter, andsign-up to our newsletter. To submit Inbox letters and Readers Features more easily, without the need to send an email, just use ourSubmit Stuff page here. For more stories like this, check our Gaming page.GameCentralSign up for exclusive analysis, latest releases, and bonus community content. This site is protected by reCAPTCHA and the Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service apply. • Pokmon Legends: Z-A shows real-time battles in first gameplay trailer
    metro.co.uk
Pokmon Legends: Z-A shows real-time battles in first gameplay trailerMichael BeckwithPublished February 27, 2025 3:20pmUpdated February 27, 2025 3:20pm We all knew Mega Evolution was back, but the new battle mechanics are a surprise (The Pokmon Company)Todays new trailer for Pokmon Legends: Z-A has revealed the first proper gameplay details, but theres no mention of Nintendo Switch 2.Considering its meant to be out this year, it was a given that the focus of the Pokmon Presents showcase would be a new trailer for Pokmon Legends Z-A.However, The Pokmon Company is still remaining coy about an exact release date, with the game only said to be arriving in late 2025. So dont expect it to launch until the autumn. You did get a good look at the game though, with the initial gameplay footage confirming similar mechanics to Pokmon Legends: Arceus, but also what look like real-time battles. The Pokmon games have traditionally stuck to turn-based combat since the very beginning, and that didnt change for Pokmon Legends: Arceus, despite how much it otherwise diverted from the usual formula. In Pokmon Legends: Z-A you can see the player character and the pokmon moving mid-battle, allowing them to avoid attacks and get into better positions. There are also what appear to be cooldown timers for your pokmons attacks and you can instantly swap out to a different pokmon. All in all, battles appear to be far more dynamic and reactionary. How much control youll have over your pokmons movement isnt entirely clear, but the trailer mentions a dodge for your human character and the fact that attacks now have different ranges.Otherwise, Legends: Z-A still follows a similar structure to Legends: Arceus. Youll be able to catch pokmon by just throwing pokballs at the them without the need to battle by exploring dedicated areas call wild zones. It seems these wild zones will be confined to the setting of Lumiose City, so no exploring dangerous, untamed wildernesses. In fact, the whole game has a more relaxing vibe than Legends: Arceus, which portrayed pokmon as dangerous, as yet untamed animals.Thats perhaps because Legends: Arceus was set in the past but Legends: Z-A appears to take place in the present day, or maybe even near future.Mega evolution is also explicitly confirmed to return, which was something the initial announcement teased. There are no signs of any new mega evolutions, but it seems likely considering this is the first time the mechanics appeared in the video games since 2014s Pokmon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire.More TrendingTheres been no mention of whether Pokmon Legends: Z-A will launch for Nintendo Switch 2 though. While the new console doesnt have an official release date, Pokmon Legends: Z-A being a late 2025 title means itll most assuredly be out after the Switch 2 has hit the market. Its probably safe to assume Legends: Z-A will only launch for Switch (something insider Jeff Grubb claimed would be the case), but be playable on Switch 2 through its backwards compatibility.Maybe therell be some benefits to running it on the newer hardware, but theres little reason for Nintendo or The Pokmon Company to be coy about that at this point. While Legends: Z-A was the highlight, it obviously wasnt the only thing announced during the showcase. Various updates for all the mobile Pokmon games were shared as well as a wholly new game titled Pokmon Champions. How do you feel about the new battle mechanics? • Ancient People May Have Thought UAPs Were Gleaming Ships in the Sky or Bad Omens
    www.discovermagazine.com
To have a view on aliens and whether or not they exist, you have to believe in outer space in general and other planets beyond our own. So, what does this mean for ancient civilizations? How did they view outer space, the stars, and the objects that we today would refer to as unidentified aerial phenomena (unidentified anomalous phenomenonfile/UAPs)?Its all about how they viewed the universe in general, says Marcus Harmes, an associate director of research at the University of Southern Queensland, whose research is focused on the cultural history of education and popular culture. If you believe in aliens, then you have to have a belief in the possibilities of other worlds, says Harmes. Its also important to note that we only have the views of the most elite members of society because they were the only individuals at the time who could read and write and, therefore, leave their opinions behind for us to read thousands of years later. The Most Dominant Ancient ThinkersHarmes says that the most dominant ancient thinkers, Plato and Aristotle, both had views that made it impossible to believe that other planets or worlds could have existed. Aristotle said, for example, that Earth was the center of gravity and that it was the only center. These schools of thought made it impossible to imagine other worlds, says Harmes.Other Greek thinkers wrote about their perspectives on other worlds as well. Anaxagoras, a Greek philosopher who died in A.D. 428, thought that the sun was a mass of red-hot metal and that the moon and stars were fiery stones. The moon, he wrote, could have life on it. He was later exiled for his heretical views, which included presumed life in the mountains of the moon.Anaxagoras wouldnt have viewed aliens as otherworldly beings that werent like humans. Instead, it was a view that men and beasts, just like those on Earth, would also live on other planets. If there are aliens, theyre going to be aliens, but just like us, so theyre not actually aliens, says Harmes.Epicurus, an ancient Greek philosopher who died in 270 B.C., also theorized that there could be other planets like our own, with humans and beasts like us living on them.Ancients Looking Up Into the SkyThe Roman historian Livy referred to unidentified objects as a spectacle of ships gleamed in the sky." It's not clear what Livy saw in the sky when he was speculating, whether it was a meteor or some other unexplained object.Often, when the ancients looked up and saw unexplained things in the sky, they would have seen them as religious omens, depending on the prevailing religious views of the time. If they were seen just before a major battle, then they were somehow a sign from the skies as to who would prevail. These were thought of as celestial signs of fate, says Harmes.Thinkers like Anaxagoras and Epicurus looked out into the sky and saw the stars, which is why they thought there had to be something in addition to our planet. Still, it would take centuries for scientists to really look beyond Earth. It was not until the 1500s that Copernicus started publishing about the fact that Earth revolved around the sun rather than the other way around.Without this understanding, its difficult to start speculating about outer space or that there might be other planets that could have life on them. We take for granted all that science has taught us about outer space; without it, it would be hard to look beyond the planet on which we live.Article Sources:Our writers at Discovermagazine.com use peer-reviewed studies and high-quality sources for our articles, and our editors review for scientific accuracy and editorial standards.
