  • NetEase is Ready to Cancel Any Game That Doesnt Meet Gamers Expectations
    cgshares.com
Following NetEases termination of the entire Seattle development team for Marvel Rivals, which reportedly affected six people, and subsequent reports suggesting the company plans to shut down over a dozen studios outside of China, NetEase CEO Ding Lei addressed the future of the studios gaming division, revealing that they have no hesitation in canceling any game that doesnt meet the expectations of its target audience.NetEaseShared during NetEases latest earnings conference call (timecode 00:59:20), first spotted by ResetEra user Ceerious and translated from Chinese by 80 Level for additional clarity, Leis statement discusses the studios approach to game development, highlighting that throughout the entire development cycle, they pay close attention to the future model, quality, and production efficiency of the project and are ready to make necessary adjustments to meet the needs of market users, a.k.a. the gaming community. If, before a games launch, its determined that it may not meet the users expectations, NetEase is ready to actively and decisively put the brakes on it, reallocating their resources to other, more promising projects. When we allocate resources to different studios, such as the R&D resources and investment, we attach great importance to the future model, quality, and production efficiency of the project, and make appropriate adjustments. If some projects are found to be possibly unsuitable for market users needs when they are launched in the future, we will actively and decisively put the brakes on them, the CEO said. But if we find some projects have high quality and efficiency, well invest more resources in them. So, it all depends on if the quality of the project can meet the expectations of its future users.Lei also emphasized the importance of continuously adapting to the demands of the future market during a games development, stating that it is one of NetEases principles to invest more when needed and to halt funding if necessary. It takes long to deliver a game, usually around three years or even longer. Therefore, from the moment the project is created, as well as during the development process, its necessary to constantly adapt to the demand of the future market. Its one of our rules to invest more where necessary and to stop where needed. While the idea of paying attention to the market, investing in promising projects, and not funding those that arent may seem logical and intuitive to most, the CEOs statement might also be construed as unnerving, not least because the only publicly available translation of Leis words, shared by Ceerious, overlooks the fact that Lei was specifically referring to games that have not yet been released and that, before discontinuing a project, the team tries to make adjustments to meet players needs. As it stands, NetEases position is a typical matter of perspective situation, where developers might feel disheartened by the sword of Damocles hanging over them, while regular gamers may be pleased that their needs are prioritized by such a large developer.Click here to access NetEase Fourth Quarter and Fiscal Year 2024 Earnings Conference Call. • Why Tales of the Shire Suddenly Has Even More Weight to Shoulder
    gamerant.com
Weta Workshop, the physical effects studio best known for its work on Peter Jackson'sThe Lord of the Rings trilogy, is developing its first-ever game for home consoles called Tales of the Shire. This project, which is being published by former Take Two subsidiary Private Division, is unsurprisingly set in The Lord of the Rings franchise. It, however, is different from most other games based on the long-running series. Tales of the Shire is a cozy life simulation game that lets players live out their hobbit fantasies in the Shire. It features no combat and no high-stakes story; instead, it has more in common with Animal Crossing or Fantasy Life than a regular action-adventure game.

  • Terminator 2D: No Fate launches September 5 on PS5 and PS4
    blog.playstation.com
Hey everyone, this is Mike Tucker, design director and programmer at Bitmap Bureau. On behalf of our team, were thrilled to reveal Terminator 2D: No Fate, an officially licensed 2D action side-scroller is launching September 5 on PS5 and PS4!Our team poured its passion into crafting adrenaline-fueled arcade gameplay and stunning pixel artthe very elements that make games special to us. As our first licensed game, we wanted to do justice to the Terminator 2 legacy.Play VideoI feel Terminator 2D: No Fate is a love letter to 80s/90s arcade games, and my mission was to create the T2 side-scroller we should have had in our youth. Players control Sarah Connor, John Connor, and the T-800 in arcade-style missions that retell Terminator 2: Judgment Day while expanding its narrative.Sarah ConnorVerify your age to view this content.Verify your age to view this content. Our team are massive fans of the filmespecially Sarah Connor, one of the greatest action heroes of all time. We knew playing as her would be special, so we worked hard to make her playstyle feel authentic. Sarah is agile and reactive, mirroring her paranoia and intense training. She excels in melee combat, sliding into enemies for direct attacks, reflecting her fearlessness. We also gave her a laser sight, inspired by the iconic Miles Dyson scene. It locks the player in place but significantly boosts damage.John ConnorVerify your age to view this content.Verify your age to view this content. One of the most exciting parts of development was designing the Future War missions, where players control an adult John Connor leading the Resistance. Since T2 only gives glimpses of Johns leadership, we had fun expanding his lore. His gameplay emphasizes strategic mid-to-long-range combat, using a plasma rifle, pipe bombs, and three ammo types. Hes less agile than Sarah but can execute a tactical roll to evade attacks.T-800Verify your age to view this content.Verify your age to view this content.Few characters in cinema match the sheer presence of the T-800. We made him move deliberately to emphasize his weight and power, most evident in his devastating shoulder barge. He compensates for slower speed with high durability, taking significant damage before going down. The T-800s segments were a blast to create, especially recreating iconic moments like the Corral bar brawl and the motorcycle escape from the T-1000 in a 2D arcade style.T-1000Of course, the T-1000 is one of the most legendary villains of all time. Robert Patricks unforgettable performancehis slow, intimidating walk and relentless sprintwas crucial for us to capture. Bringing his liquid metal abilities to life in pixel art was a real challenge, but our animators nailed his menace. Players will feel it when they face him in-game.Working on a title connected to such a revered film has been a huge honor. Terminator 2s characters are among the most beloved in cinema, and we hope players enjoy playing them as much as we enjoyed bringing them to life.Terminator 2D: No Fate launches on PS5 and PS4 September 5.
