OnePlus 13T is expected to be launched later this month in China. The phone is said to be a compact offering, with a smaller display, compared to the OnePlus 13, which gets a 6.82-inch LTPO panel. Now, a senior company executive has teased the slim display bezels of the smartphone and even confirmed one of the colours it will be available in. The same official previously revealed that the OnePlus 13T will be offered in three colour options. OnePlus 13T Colourway, Bezel Size TeasedThe OnePlus 13T will be available in a pink colour, OnePlus China President Louis Lee confirmed in a Weibo post. An accompanying image teased the handset against a pink version of the iPhone 16. Compared to the iPhone, the OnePlus 13T's pink option appeared to be lighter shade.In the post, Lee clarifies that all colour variants of the upcoming OnePlus 13T will have a similarly muted "low saturation design (translated from Chinese)" since it is more durable. He added that the pink variant will introduce the "coral velvet glass craft," which is the company's latest glass design technology.Lee had confirmed earlier that the OnePlus 13T will be offered in three colourways. We can expect the company to reveal the two other options soon. The phone will also have a new customisable shortcut key placed on the left edge instead of the alert slider. In another Weibo post, Lee compared the flat screen of the OnePlus 13T against the iPhone 16 Pro display. The latter has a 6.30-inch screen with slim bezels and in comparison, the bezels of the OnePlus 13T appear to have similar narrow bezels. The company's newly added portfolio in the country includes notebooks, desktops, monitors, and more. Mastercard is taking a significant step toward broadening the use of crypto assets across Europe and the UK. The global payments leader has partnered with crypto exchange Kraken to facilitate card-based crypto payments for everyday purchases. The collaboration was officially announced in a blog post published by Mastercard on April 8. With its Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) regulations, the European Union is already one of the most tightly regulated crypto markets globally. Meanwhile, the UK is expected to finalise its own comprehensive crypto legislation by 2026.In the coming weeks, Kraken will be launching both physical and digital debit cards to facilitate payments through crypto. The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has unveiled a redesigned Aadhaar app for smartphones that scans a user's face to confirm their identity. According to the UIDAI the new app is designed to enable digital verification via a QR code and the camera on a user's smartphone, without the need to submit photocopies of a user's Aadhaar card. The app could eventually speed up the process of identity verification, but concerns around the use of biometrics for authentication continue to linger.UIDAI Conducts Testing of Revamped Aadhaar AppThe new app was showcased at Aadhaar Samvaad, the stakeholder meeting with ecosystem partners, that was held in Delhi on Tuesday. At the event, the UIDAI demonstrated the revamped Aadhaar app, which integrates its Aadhaar Face Authentication system that scans a user's face to confirm their identity.According to the UIDAI, the new Aadhaar app allows users with an Aadhaar card to authenticate themselves without carrying a physical version of the card, or sharing photocopies of the document with a service provider. Once the app is set up on a user's smartphone, it can be used to securely verify their identity and no details are shared with the provider.A video showcasing the capabilities of the new Aadhaar app sheds some light on the authentication process. When presented with a QR code or an application that requests identity verification, the Aadhaar app will prompt users to enter their security PIN to unlock the app and begin authentication.Users will then be presented with a masked, digital version of their Aadhaar card in the app. They can scan a QR code, which shows the information (for e.g. name, date of birth, and masked mobile number) requested by the service provider, which can be a hotel reception desk or a shop.If a user chooses to go ahead with the authentication process, the app will prompt them to position their face in a circle in the middle of the screen. The app requires a user to blink in order to complete the authentication process, and a confirmation message is displayed to inform the user that their identity has been verified.While the redesigned Aadhaar app might streamline the authentication process and cut down on the use of physical documents, experts have warned about the security of user's biometric information on centralised servers. Facial biometrics, fingerprints, and iris scans are immutable and cannot be changed — unlike passwords and security codes — and leaks could put enrolled users at risk of identity theft and other forms of misuse.The UIDAI says that the redesigned Aadhaar app will protect users against forgery (or editing) and data is only shared with a user's consent, according to the UIDAI. It has been released to a small group of testers and will be rolled out widely in the future, after feedback is received from testers and ecosystem partners. It can monitor the lack of a pulse due to various factors such as pulmonary cardiac arrest, respiratory or circulatory failure, overdose or poisoning.If a pulse isn't detected, the Google Pixel Watch 3 will vibrate and check in with the wearer to see if they need help. It is automatically dismissed if the smartwatch detects movement or a pulse. If not, it will place a call to emergency services with an automated message that shares the wearer's location and informs them of the loss of pulse.The feature was first introduced for the Pixel Watch 3 last year but was limited to the European markets. Last month, it was said to have received clearance from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), enabling Google to introduce it to the smartwatch in the US. However, it requires the Pixel Watch 3 Wi-Fi model to be connected and in range of a smartphone. Meanwhile, the LTE models require an active LTE carrier to place emergency calls. Though this change generally occurs in mid-April, this year's reversal occurred remarkably early based on a blog article made April 3 by NOAA.Scientists Observe Displacement of Arctic Polar VortexAccording to the officials of NOAA, “the polar vortex is not likely to find its normal location above the North Pole.” It is doubtful it will recover its wintertime strength and will ultimately "enter hibernation" over Northern Europe.As the polar vortex fades, temperatures in Northern Europe, portions of Asia, and the eastern United States will be below average. "Temperatures for the last week of March were pretty normal across the eastern US, but the latest forecasts do predict increased chances of below-normal temperatures for the next week," they reported.How the Vortex Disruption Impacts Weather GloballyIf global warming is influencing the polar vortex, it could paradoxically increase the likelihood of catastrophic winter weather outbreaks in the mid-latitudes.Among the options is that the "preferred" position of the polar vortex might be sensitive to local changes in sea ice cover. They have been identified by a group of astronomers. The two stars are orbiting each other. They are believed to be on course to eventually merge together. The collision is expected to take place in roughly 23 billion years. A Type 1a supernova is likely to result from this merger. This is the first time such a system which is destined to follow this path, has been clearly observed near our region of the galaxy.First direct evidence linked to future Type 1a supernovaAccording to a study published in Nature, the system has a combined mass equal to about 1.56 times that of the sun. Such a high mass has confirmed that an eventual explosion is unavoidable. The heavier of the two stars is expected to draw matter from its lighter companion as their orbit gradually tightens. The investigation has been carried out by a team from the University of Warwick using data from large optical telescopes.Closer orbit to drive merger over timeJames Munday, PhD researcher and lead author of the study, shared in a press statement released to Space.com that the team acted quickly to verify the compactness of the system. Measurements revealed the stars currently orbit each other in just over 14 hours. Over time, the orbit is predicted to reduce to less than a minute. Lightning is commonly considered a sign of disaster in the forest, as lightning kills or damages trees. On the lowlands of Panama, the tonka bean tree (Dipteryx oleifera) might have evolved to capitalize on this natural occurrence. New research suggests that lightning strikes could help the tonka bean tree (Dipteryx oleifera). According to Live Science research, these trees not only survive these electrical interactions unharmed, but the lightning also harms their competitors and the parasitic vines that cling to the tonka bean plants.The researchers published their findings on March 26 in the journal New Phytologist. Lightning is a major cause of tree mortality in tropical forests, particularly among the largest and oldest trees, which play important roles in carbon storage and biodiversity.Lightning as a Canopy WeaponOn average, each lightning hit destroyed over 2.4 tons (2 metric tons) of adjacent tree biomass and approximately 80 percent of the lianas (parasitic vines) that plagued the tonka bean canopy. As per Gora's assumption, the key to these trees' lightning resistance comes from their physical structure.A few studies describe the tree as having strong internal conductivity, letting lightning current flow through without building up damaging heat like a well-insulated wire. Because they tend to grow large — up to 130 feet (40 meters)—and live for centuries, a single tonka bean tree is estimated to be struck at least five times after reaching maturity. Each strike helps to clear out vines and competitors, opening up the canopy to help it thrive.Ecological Impact and Evolutionary MarvelGregory Moore, a horticulturalist from the University of Melbourne who was not involved in the study, thinks the results will apply to other species. "The sort of work could also apply to other tree-dominated plant communities, such as woodlands or low woodlands where trees are widely separated, so it's nothing like a tropical forest," he said, adding that other tall trees are also possible targets of lightning strikes.More Than Just a Tree"We have long known that some trees can withstand multiple lightning strikes," Moore said, noting that some tall trees survive Australian bushfires and grow up towering over their neighbors, making them prime targets for lightning strikes. Three live dire wolf pups have been born using reconstructed DNA. The extinct species had last roamed North America around 12,500 years ago. The milestone was reached by a Dallas-based biotech firm that focuses on genetic conservation. Ancient DNA samples from fossilised remains were analysed. Modern gene-editing tools were used to mimic key characteristics of the extinct predator. These pups were brought to life by implanting modified embryos into domestic dog surrogates. The young wolves have been named Romulus, Remus and Khaleesi.Ancient DNA edited in lab to recreate speciesAccording to a study shared by Colossal Biosciences, DNA samples had been collected from two ancient dire wolf fossils. One was a 13,000-year-old tooth, while the other was a 72,000-year-old skull fragment. These fragments were compared to modern wolf relatives and grey wolves were chosen for DNA alteration because of their evolutionary proximity. Gene sequences that were found only in dire wolves were isolated. These were introduced into the DNA of grey wolves through targeted editing.Cloning technique used to implant embryosThe altered genetic material was inserted into grey wolf egg cells after removing their original nuclei. These prepared cells were placed inside domestic dogs. Each surrogate received multiple embryos. Interestingly, only one embryo survived in each of the first two dogs. Both gave birth by caesarean section, while the third pup was born in a second round of implantation.Physical traits match fossil recordThe new pups have been observed to develop features consistent with known dire wolf fossils. Thick white coats, larger teeth and body structure have been reported. These results came from identifying changes in 14 genes. The gene edits were introduced using CRISPR technology.The same company had previously cloned red wolves. The team had also created “woolly mice” as part of a mammoth revival effort. Binance has announced a partnership with Worldpay, a leading payment processing company based in Ohio, US. As part of the collaboration, users will be able to purchase cryptocurrencies on Binance using Apple Pay and Google Pay, with transactions routed through Worldpay. The US Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) is overseeing the creation of crypto regulations as per President Donald Trump's directives. As part of the process, SEC's Crypto Task Force has scheduled its second roundtable meeting for April 11. The meeting aims to establish rules for safer crypto trading and protect national financial security. Gregory Tusar, VP of Institutional Product at Coinbase and Katherine Minarik, Chief Legal Officer at Uniswap Labs are among the panelists listed for this session.The second roundtable session is titled “Between a Block and a Hard Place: Tailoring Regulation for Crypto Trading", the SEC said in an official post.A total of nine panelists have been listed to be part of this session. These include top officials from the Healthy Markets Association, New York Stock Exchange, Texture Capital, US Berkeley, FalconX, Cumberland DRW, and Urvin Finance. Richard Gabbert, Chief of Staff of the Crypto Task Force, will deliver the opening remarks at the meeting, with Trump-appointed acting SEC chairman Mark Uyeda also being part of the discussions."The roundtable will be held at the SEC's headquarters at 100 F Street, N.E., Washington, D.C. from 1 p.m. – 5 p.m. The event will be open to the public and webcast live on the SEC's website. Doors will open at 12 p.m.," the SEC informed community members who wish to attend the meeting online or offline.Following the discussions, the SEC will let attendees submit their suggestions at the office or through emails. NASA's Parker Solar Probe has made its second close flyby of the sun. The spacecraft travelled at a speed of 692000 kilometres per hour. It moved within 6.1 million kilometres of the sun. This event took place on March 22. A signal confirming its good health was received on March 25. The signal confirmed that all systems on board were working as planned. The probe was designed to study solar winds and collect data from the sun's outer atmosphere. The mission is being used to help scientists understand solar activity that affects Earth.More About The MissionAccording to NASA's announcement, the probe's instruments were activated during the pass. They were used to study the corona. This is the outer layer of the sun's atmosphere. The spacecraft was operated on its own during the flyby. It had been programmed in advance. Scientists believe this data may help them understand why the corona is hotter than the sun's surface. The data is also being used to study changes in space weather. The satellites Kosmos 2581, 2582, and 2583 were sent into orbit in early February from the Plesetsk Cosmodrome. They've been placed in a near-polar orbit, about 585 kilometres above Earth. So far, Russian officials haven't confirmed what these satellites are actually meant to do. But what's really stirred interest is the release of an unknown object from one of them. This new development, spotted in mid-March, has prompted fresh scrutiny from space monitoring teams across the globe.What We Know So FarAccording to tracking data from the United States Space Force and other monitoring groups, the mysterious object appeared on March 18. It was quickly catalogued and, at first, linked to Kosmos 2581. Later on, though, some signals hinted it might be tied to Kosmos 2583 instead. What's clear is that the object was released while the satellites were still active and so far, Russia hasn't said a word about it.Interestingly, before the object showed up, the satellites were seen carrying out what's known as proximity operations basically manoeuvring close to other objects in orbit, which is not something routine satellites typically do.Expert Insight and Possible ExplanationsAstrophysicist Jonathan McDowell from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics spoke to Space.com about the situation. He pointed out that the satellites had been making deliberate close-range movements, which has led many to believe this isn't just routine activity.As for the object itself, there are a few possibilities. It could be part of a satellite testing programme or a tool for formation flying. There's also a chance it's linked to some kind of military experiment. While a technical malfunction hasn't been ruled out, experts note that accidents like that usually leave behind several bits of debris and that doesn't seem to be the case here.Putting It Into ContextThe Kosmos label has been used by Russia for decades, dating back to 1962. It covers a broad range of secretive military and scientific missions. Triplets like this group aren't unusual either China and the US have also used similar formations, often for surveillance or intelligence-gathering purposes.Still, the exact purpose of Kosmos 2581, 2582, 2583 and now this newly released object remains a mystery. Until more information is released (if it ever is), analysts will continue to watch closely from the ground. The company also announced the pricing for the higher rate limits, and claimed that it is keeping them competitive.Gemini 2.5 Pro Pricings AnnouncedIn a blog post, Google said that it witnessed an early adoption of Gemini 2.5 Pro from developers, and due to this high demand, it is now expanding the access of the large language model (LLM) to developers. The tech giant said that the foundation model is now available as a public preview in the Gemini API in Google Studio with higher rate limits. Notably, the AI model is yet to be released on Vertex AI, and the company said it will be added to the platform shortly.Coming to the pricing, Gemini 2.5 Pro is now available in two pricing tiers. The first is available with regular rate limits of 2,00,000 tokens or less. The second price tier kicks in once a developer has exhausted the regular rate limit and goes beyond that.Within the regular rate limit, Gemini 2.5 Pro will cost $1.25 (roughly Rs. 107) per million input tokens and $10 (roughly Rs. 858) per million output tokens. The input tokens include text, images, audio, and videos, and the output price is adjusted for reasoning tokens.Beyond the 2,00,000 token rate limit, developers will be charged $2.5 (roughly Rs. 214) for every one million input tokens and $15 (roughly Rs. 1,290) per million output tokens. Notably, the experimental version of the Gemini model continues to remain free with lower rate limits.The tech giant says the model has been priced competitively, and comparing its prices to competitors, the Gemini 2.5 Pro model does appear to be significantly cheaper. For instance, Anthropic's flagship model, Claude 3.7 Sonnet, costs $3 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens.Google's major rival in the AI space, OpenAI, charges even higher for its reasoning models. The o1 AI model has an input price of $15 per million input tokens and $60 (roughly Rs. 5,150) per million output tokens. However, the company does make a provision for cached input tokens and charges a discounted $7.5 (roughly Rs. 640) per million. Microsoft announced several new features for its artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot, Copilot, last week. The Redmond-based tech giant said that these features will enable the AI chatbot to deliver a more personalised experience to users. Some of the new features were previously available only on the web client, and are now being expanded to its mobile and Windows desktop apps. Among the new additions, Copilot is getting memory capability to remember certain details about the user, and an agentic feature that will allow it to complete tasks on the web.Copilot Is Getting New Personalisation-Focused AI FeaturesIn a blog post, Mustafa Suleyman, Executive Vice President and CEO of Microsoft AI, announced several new features which are currently being rolled out to Copilot globally. Apart from the abovementioned, these features include the expansion of Copilot Vision, and the addition of Podcasts, Shopping, and Deep Research capabilities.One of the key features being introduced is Memory. With this, the AI chatbot can remember certain details about the user, such as their favourite food, birthdays of loved ones, as well as their hobbies. The company says Copilot uses this information to build a more personalised experience and offer tailored suggestions and reminders. Users will have the option to control the information Copilot remembers, and they can also opt out entirely.Microsoft is also working on another personalisation feature that will allow users to give Copilot a custom appearance. While details about the customisability and the method of adding were not shared, Suleyman said users would be able to see this appearance while interacting with the chatbot.Copilot is also getting an agentic function. Dubbed Actions, this feature will let Copilot complete web-based tasks independently in the background. It can perform tasks such as booking tickets for an event, reserving a restaurant table, or sending a thoughtful gift to a friend. The AI agent is said to work with most websites, and Microsoft has partnered with several brands, including Booking.com, Expedia, Kayak, OpenTable, Tripadvisor, Skyscanner, and more.Microsoft is also expanding Copilot Vision to mobile and Windows desktop apps. It is an image-understanding feature, and it can use the device's camera to look at the surroundings and answer user queries. The feature can also analyse real-time video from the camera and photos stored in the phone's gallery. On the desktop, it can also read the screen and interact with the content. Vision will first be introduced for Windows Insider starting next week.Copilot Pages will also allow users to share their notes, content, and research with the chatbot, and it will organise, format, and simplify it for easier viewing. Users can also ask queries based on the information shared and add the revised information with a single tap.Similar to Google's NotebookLM (and now Gemini), Copilot is also getting a podcast creation feature. Dubbed Pocasts, it can create a personalised audio session of content based on the user's interests. Users can continue to chat with Copilot while listening to the podcast to gain a better understanding of the topic being discussed.Microsoft is also pitching the AI chatbot as a shopping assistant. It says that Copilot can now perform research, build comparisons, and offer advice when shopping for a specific product. It can also be used to get notifications about price drops and sales. Users will also be able to purchase products directly from the Copilot app.Finally, two more features are being rolled out Deep Research and Copilot Search. The former allows users to conduct multi-step research on a complex topic and prepare a comprehensive report, while the latter is available in Bing and offers a unified experience of traditional search and generative search. Copilot Search shows detailed responses in Bing with cited sources and website suggestions for deeper understanding.
