  • Switch 2 Patent Suggests You Can Flip The Console Upside Down
    www.nintendolife.com
Flippin' 'eck.A new patent from Nintendo suggests that the Joy-Con controllers for the Switch 2 can be inserted into either side of the main console, effectively letting you flip it 180 degrees according to your preference. As spotted by VGC, the patent includes detailed images showcasing the idea, with the two Joy-Con controllers effectively making full use of the new magnetic connection system to allow you to attach them on either side of the console. With the original Switch, this simply wasn't possible unless you wanted the Joy-Con to be facing backwards, which... y'know, isn't ideal.Read the full article on nintendolife.com

  • Video: We've Played Civilization VII On Nintendo Switch - Here's 15 Minutes Of Gameplay
    www.nintendolife.com
Game / engine is running smoother than Civ 6, thats for sure. But the start and lack of an opening tutorial (its a tutorial as you go instead so far) has me a bit thrown off.Im use to starting Civ as a settler and picking my starting location. This one just gave me 2 cities right off the bat. Meanwhile Napoleon, and 2 other civs have 4 cities starting out. Also started with a lot of units. Its almost like Im playing a scenario, but all I did was hit new game. I truly hope this isnt the streamlined process Id heard about. Was trying to keep Civ 7 news and such away and give myself a spoiler free experience.

  • Guide: Best Mario Sports Games Of All Time
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: Nintendo LifeNintendo's mascot has never been shy of a spin-off, and while his karting exploits not to mention his world-renowned penchant for a party tend to grab all the attention and the biggest sales, Mario and co. have a long, rich history of starring in Nintendo sports games, too.But what's the best Mario sports game? We've compiled this ranked list of every Mario sports game covering everything from the premier league to the lowly feeder divisions, from the courtside seats to the nosebleeds!Below you'll find every Mario sport game, ranked from worst to best, featuring the Mushroom Kingdom crew, including his trips to the Olympic Games when he teams up with Sonic and his Sega posse. If it's a sports game and it's got Mario in the title, you'll find it here. It's time for the first shot/throw/kick/serve, then - let's see who takes home a medal and who's up for relegation. We begin at the bottom of the table...On this page: Best Mario Sports Games Of All Time33. Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash (Wii U)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: NintendoRelease Date: 20th Nov 2015 (USA) / 20th Nov 2015 (UK/EU)There are positives with Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash, like the strong basic gameplay and neat visuals, but we cannot emphasise enough how phoned-in and thin the content offering was, nor how throwaway Mega Battle was as a tentpole feature.Given the severe lack of content at release, it's a difficult game to recommend to even the most passionate Mario Tennis fans. Still, if you're after local multiplayer fun in which you simply mess around with the various court types, you can't really go wrong. It's just a shame the rest of it felt like a rush job.32. Mario's Tennis (VB)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Nintendo R&D1Release Date: 14th Aug 1995 (USA)The small character roster makes the tournaments laughably short but this is a solid, if simple, tennis game. Good music and graphics combined with the excellent 3D effect of the court ensure that Marios Tennis is an excellent introduction to the Virtual Boy, plus it's cheap and easy to find these days. If only Nintendo had released that link cable, though...31. Mario Sports Superstars (3DS)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: NintendoRelease Date: 24th Mar 2017 (USA) / 10th Mar 2017 (UK/EU)Mario Sports Superstars straddles an unfortunate line of mediocrity. Combining five sports in one convenient package, it's certainly not a bad game, as it has plenty of variety and content to offer with a robust multiplayer mode, but we'd struggle to call it a good game either. It merely exists; sitting uncomfortably in a space that the Mario & Sonic series ruled for years. It fails to offer a definitive version of anything, and even a pretty decent take on horse racing isn't worth the price of admission alone. As a multiplayer title, it has its moments, but it's a painfully lifeless single-player experience that needed to take a few more risks.30. NES Open Tournament Golf (NES)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Nintendo R&D2Release Date: 29th Sep 1991 (USA) / 18th Jun 1992 (UK/EU)Available On: Nintendo Switch OnlineAs with nearly all of the games in the NES library, the formative systems and mechanics put down in games of the '80s have advanced a lot in the interim. However, while NES Open Tournament Golf (known as Mario Open Golf in Japan, so technically the first entry in the Mario Golf series) might lack the bells, whistles and frills we've come to expect from our golf games these days, the core gameplay here is as solid as ever. 18 holes might be pushing it, but a swift walk around the back nine will do nicely.29. Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games (Wii U)Publisher: SEGARelease Date: 15th Nov 2013 (USA) / 8th Nov 2013 (UK/EU)Mario and Sonic 2014 felt like a minor progression in the series certainly not a huge leap. Taking a lot of its cues from 2010 edition, and ignoring the rapid-fire party experience of 2012, it hit some of the right buttons, but theyre the same unremarkable buttons that were hit four years earlier on Wii.The inclusion of online was certainly welcome, but too limited, while the inventive TV idea used on the GamePad was never taken far enough. With a group of friends, there's still fun to be had; its just hard to shake that feeling that youve done it all before.28. Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games (Wii U)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: SEGARelease Date: 24th Jun 2016 (USA) / 24th Jun 2016 (UK/EU)For every step Mario & Sonic At The Rio 2016 Olympic Games takes forward, it seems to stumble several steps backwards in the attempt. There are some solid minigames, but they came at the expense of more memorable Dream Events. Motion controls are a thing of the past, replaced with needlessly complicated button layouts. There's no dedicated story mode, meaning that solo players must enjoy repeating Tournaments if they want a lengthy session.Olympic veterans may have enjoyed the graphical upgrade this entry brought to the series, and it's not a bad game; as ever, it's just not a particularly good one.27. Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (3DS)Publisher: SEGA / Developer: SEGARelease Date: 14th Feb 2012 (USA) / 10th Feb 2012 (UK/EU)The Mario & Sonic games were once a shining example of how minigame collections should be developed. However, while Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games was technically no worse than its forebears, its events were too up-and-down quality-wise.It was by no means a train wreck, and a valiant first effort for the series in its jump to 3DS, but this all-star collab had too many wrinkles to be an easy recommendation.26. Mario Strikers: Battle League (Switch)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Next Level GamesRelease Date: 10th Jun 2022 (USA) / 10th Jun 2022 (UK/EU)Not a fan favourite, although we really connected with this one. Mario Strikers: Battle League is a masterclass in competitive game design. What it lacks in options is more than made up by just how much fun the game is, and its absolutely gorgeous to boot.Post-launch updates brought along content which you could argue should have been there from the start, but the game it played from kick-off was a beautiful one. If arcade sport action isnt your bag, itll likely do nothing to sway your opinion, but if you have even a passing interest in this kind of caper, Mario Strikers: Battle League is one of the best sports games on Switch.25. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (DS)Publisher: SEGA / Developer: SEGARelease Date: 22nd Jan 2008 (USA) / 8th Feb 2008 (UK/EU)Whilst M&S (not that one) made a successful hop, skip, and jump over to Nintendo's autostereoscopic 3D handheld, it doesn't quite reach the heights of its older, wiser Wii incarnation. Wii owners had no real reason to get this version of the game, but the two people who owned a DS and not a Wii in their household likely found something enjoyable in this portable version.24. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games (Wii)Publisher: SEGA / Developer: SEGARelease Date: 6th Nov 2007 (USA) / 22nd Nov 2007 (UK/EU)Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games healthily extended the range of sports games for Wii with an impressive amount of events spanning a number of different sports. There was something for everyone, whatever your sporting or character preference. With impressive controls and the novelty of seeing two gaming titans sharing the screen, Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games was a party hit which did just about enough to take the Gold in the Wii multiplayer discipline.23. Mario Tennis Open (3DS)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: CamelotRelease Date: 20th May 2012 (USA) / 25th May 2012 (UK/EU)Mario Tennis Open was a strong and accessible entry in the beloved series, and a group of friends gathered around could lose themselves in it for a long time. Solo players could still have a good time perfecting their skills, and playing online was a nice way to keep things interesting, but the missing RPG mode left a pretty big hole that this 3DS entry struggled to fill.Unless you're part of a cabal of 3DS-owning pals, you'll miss out on the real heart of the game: punching your wily opponent in the arm after a hard-fought match.22. Mario Golf: Super Rush (Switch)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: CamelotRelease Date: 25th Jun 2021 (USA) / 25th Jun 2021 (UK/EU)Mario Golf: Super Rush is a game that in many respects hits its marks. Golf Adventure has plenty of charm and offers a fun way to learn various mechanics and unlock courses. Away from that solo endeavour there are decent options and customisation for multiplayer games, local or online, button controls or motion-based swinging. It's not a premium effort, however, with a nagging feeling of corners cut and, at times, an absence of creativity. However, many players should get a good amount of fun out of this one, both solo and with friends. This ain't the Masters, but for Mario Golf fans it is a solid par.21. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020 (Switch)Publisher: SEGA / Developer: SEGARelease Date: 5th Nov 2019 (USA) / 8th Nov 2019 (UK/EU)Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020's 34 events provide welcome variety and there are far more hits than misses in its lineup, but once you're finished with its four-hour Story mode it becomes notably less enticing for solo players. With no real incentives or unlockables to aim for, this should be considered a strictly multiplayer affair and a pretty good one, too. For fans jonesing for Olympics action back in 2020, this wasn't a bad way to pass the time until the rescheduled real-life event finally took place in 2021.20. Mario Tennis Aces (Switch)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: CamelotRelease Date: 22nd Jun 2018 (USA) / 22nd Jun 2018 (UK/EU)Were used to seeing Wii U games transfer to Switch, but for Mario Tennis: Ultra Smash to have moved across without a substantial makeover would have been disastrous. Mario Tennis Aces, wonderfully, is anything but that its a superb arcade sports game thats generous with its suite of player options and only occasionally guilty of being a little cheap in its Adventure Mode. The presentation is spot on, and the core tennis action is absorbing whether youre trading simple strokes or firing off special shots. Some animations and voiceovers are identical to Ultra Smashs, but everything around them has been overhauled and rebuilt to reach quite splendid heights. This is something of a Switch Port Plus, then not quite a whole new experience, but so improved as to be near unrecognisable.19. New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis (Wii)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: NintendoRelease Date: 9th Mar 2009 (USA) / 6th Mar 2009 (UK/EU)If you loved Wii Sports Tennis and couldnt get enough of it, New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis was a great investment. There are a lot of modes to get through, the controls work fairly well, and its a bash with your mates around. The only trouble is that it doesnt feel like the mechanics have been properly refined; precision is somewhat lacking and we can't help but wonder why Nintendo didnt wait until the Motion Plus attachment was out. (The answer is likely so that anyone with a Wiimote not just the upgraded version could buy the game and get out on the court.)Worthwhile for a fun whackaround, but not a top seed.18. Mario & Sonic at the London 2012 Olympic Games (Wii)Publisher: SEGA / Developer: SEGARelease Date: 15th Nov 2011 (USA) / 18th Nov 2011 (UK/EU)Plenty of people seemed to like this one, although our flame didn't burn as brightly for this Olympic entry - maybe having the real-life games on our doorstep dampened our enthusiasm for Mario & Sonic's take. What felt fresh and enjoyable four years prior didn't cut the mustard in 2011, particularly when some elements were stripped out or reworked to poor effect.London Party mode was a poor alternative to the dozens of superior Wii party games, and while its cast of gaming greats was enough to forgive some of its mistakes, the flagship home console version of Mario and Sonic's 2012 tournament was pretty far off the mark by our reckoning.17. Mario Hoops 3 on 3 (DS)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Square EnixRelease Date: 11th Sep 2006 (USA) / 16th Feb 2007 (UK/EU)Mario Hoops 3 on 3, known as Mario Slam Basketball in Europe, was a great handheld title in its day, especially when played with a friend. If you're after a fun, colourful, and (at times) manic sporting experience with inventive controls and wonderful presentation, this is definitely worth a shot. Our lovely video producer Felix is a particular fan of this underrated Mario gem check him out waxing lyrical about Mario's courtside skills alongside footage of the game.16. Mario Sports Mix (Wii)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Square EnixRelease Date: 7th Feb 2011 (USA) / 4th Feb 2011 (UK/EU)While Mario Sports Mix may lack the depth of Mario's flagship sporting lines, it's a great example of a more casual Mario title that multiple players can enjoy.Dodgeball, basketball, hockey, and volleyball are included in the mix here, so you're not getting watered-down versions of Tennis and Golf. Not all the disciplines on offer will be to everyone's taste, but there's enough good stuff here to last you a fair while and the developer the venerable Square Enix in this case! gave it oodles of imagination.15. Mario Golf: World Tour (3DS)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: CamelotRelease Date: 2nd May 2014 (USA) / 2nd May 2014 (UK/EU)Mario Golf: World Tour sees developer Camelot return to the fairway and turn in an impressively lengthy and involving round of golf. There's depth not just in the level of content and diversity of options, but in the mechanics themselves; options for beginners and scratch players are impeccably implemented.Attempts at zaniness with items feel rather superfluous, although some well-designed courses would have benefited from less conventional designs. Aside from that, this was a truly excellent addition to the 3DS library, working beautifully whether you want a 15-minute blast or a longer round.14. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (Wii)Publisher: SEGA / Developer: SEGARelease Date: 13th Oct 2009 (USA) / 16th Oct 2009 (UK/EU)Sega truly listened to the feedback about the first game and slimmed down the waggle controls, beefed up the lastability with a ton of extra content, and managed to turn even Curling and Figure Skating into engaging and varied games. With over 20 characters, 25 events and hundreds of unlockable items, this one had enough to last you until the next Olympics, and the added subtlety of the controls made playing it a far less tiring experience. It may have lacked the Motion Plus-aided control genius of Wii Sports Resort but it's every bit as good in terms of content, presentation, and pure, distilled fun.13. Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games (DS)Publisher: SEGA / Developer: SEGARelease Date: 13th Oct 2009 (USA) / 16th Oct 2009 (UK/EU)If youre after a fun and accessible single-player adventure on your DS, Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games fits the bill. The sports can be hit and miss, but the Sonic Rush-like Supersonic Downhill and Fever Hockey are addictive events youll go back to time and time again. It may not have the subtle controls of the Wii version, or the same amount of unlockable content, but its an enjoyable pick-up-and-play title that was well worth a look if you were looking to inject some of the Nintendo X Sega spirit into Vancouver 2010.12. Mario Tennis: Power Tour (GBA)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: CamelotRelease Date: 5th Dec 2005 (USA) / 18th Nov 2005 (UK/EU)Veteran developer Camelot proved it still belonged on Centre Court with this one. With a comprehensive story mode, tight and entertaining tennis gameplay mechanics and a surprising amount of depth, Mario Tennis: Power Tour (or Mario Power Tennis as it's known in Europe) is a winning return for the plumber and his pals. It's pretty dialogue-heavy, but theres a deep, rewarding experience to be found underneath all the waffle, with the story mode serving up a satisfying sense of progression from the very beginning to this Game-Set-Match.11. Mario Superstar Baseball (GCN)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: NamcoRelease Date: 29th Aug 2005 (USA) / 11th Nov 2005 (UK/EU)Developed by Namco and tapping into the Japanese and US obsessions with whacking a little ball with a big stick (we prefer a big plank in this green and pleasant land), 2005's Mario Superstar Baseball gave the titular sport the colourful Nintendo-character treatment.Being the first game in the line, it lacked some of Camelot's depth from the RPG-inspired Golf and Tennis lines. However, a neat Chemistry mechanic that affected your team's performance and a hefty roster that included a cluster of Kongs gave Mario and co. a sporting chance off the bat - enough to garner a sequel on Wii, at least.10. Mario Super Sluggers (Wii)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Bandai NamcoRelease Date: 25th Aug 2008 (USA)Mario Super Sluggers never saw the light of day in PAL regions - probably a wise decision based on the lacklustre performance of its predecessor on these shores, though curiously we're still waiting for our region-appropriate 'Mario Wicket Whackers'.This Now Production and Namco Bandai-developed slugger was a sequel to Namco's GameCube entry three years earlier and put the plumber and his pals on the ball field in a thoroughly serviceable take on the sport that let you indulge your proclivities for either waggle or Nunchuk input.9. Mario Golf (GBC)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: CamelotRelease Date: 15th Oct 1999 (USA) / 26th Oct 1999 (UK/EU)Available On: Nintendo Switch OnlineMuch like Mario Tennis on GBC, Mario Golf is another game revolving entirely around human characters (Kid, Sherry, Joe, and Grace). In fact, there's a total of eight playable humans and only three Mario characters. This is a story-heavy adventure where you can freely move your character around an overworld and rounds of golf take the place of traditional RPG battles. You can level up your golfer to enhance their stats and even transfer them to the also-excellent N64 version using the Transfer Pak.It may not mirror the scope or ambition of Dragon Quest or Pokmon, but this is a compelling little clubhouse treat which stands proud among the Mario Golf series.8. Mario Power Tennis (GCN)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: CamelotRelease Date: 8th Nov 2004 (USA) / 25th Feb 2005 (UK/EU)Mario Power Tennis was packed with cool courts, items, and effects that had forms or simpler equivalents on N64 but this entry nevertheless stepped it up a notch. It really was the core experience from the 64-bit entry once again, but powered up.In addition to Mario Kart-esque items and quirky court types there were also plenty of modes, with various tournaments that were straight-up tennis or 'gimmick' focused. There were also eight minigames, some of which were fun diversions, but like with its home console predecessor, many fond memories revolve around local multiplayer.7. Mario Golf: Advance Tour (GBA)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: CamelotRelease Date: 22nd Jun 2004 (USA) / 17th Sep 2004 (UK/EU)Mario Golf: Advance Tour is a fantastic portable golf game and then some.Camelot nailed the mixture of RPG and straight-up golf action in the Game Boy Color entry, and it works this time around, too so well, in fact, that there's not much need to rely on the stable of Mario characters to flesh out the experience, although we're always happy to join the plumber on the fairway, or for the various minigame modes available.Throw in multiplayer options and Advance Tour is still worth firing up when tee time comes around.6. Mario Strikers Charged (Wii)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Next Level GamesRelease Date: 30th Jul 2007 (USA) / 25th May 2007 (UK/EU)Mario and his Mushroom Kingdom pals put down their jumpers for goalposts and had another crack at the beautiful game in this follow-up to their first time on the pitch on GameCube in 2005.Mario Strikers Charged delivers exactly the brand of arcade pyrotechnical take on football you'd expect, with Next Level Games once again on dev duties as the studio went up another rung on the ladder in Nintendo's estimations on their way to such gems as Punch-Out!!, Luigi's Mansion 2, and the sublime Luigi's Mansion 3 - and ultimately being acquired and brought under Nintendo's first-party umbrella in 2021.5. Mario Smash Football (GCN)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: Next Level GamesRelease Date: 5th Dec 2005 (USA) / 18th Nov 2005 (UK/EU)Proving that there's little that the portly plumber can't turn his hand (or foot) to, Next Level Games' Mario Smash Football (or Super Mario Strikers in the US) offered solid soccer action in a colourful package with Mushroom Kingdom residents brightening up the beautiful game and adding a little flair and excitement to proceedings - no nil-nil draws here! The polar opposite of the simulation style that 'proper' football games were going for, this is a fast-paced five-a-side frenzy that did well enough to get a similarly satisfying sequel on Wii. And a fun fact: it started out life as a soccer-platformer hybrid in the prototype stage!4. Mario Golf (N64)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: CamelotRelease Date: 26th Jul 1999 (USA) / 14th Sep 1999 (UK/EU)Available On: NSO + Expansion PackCamelot brought Mario and his golfing pals onto the 3D fairways in this excellent entry in his catalogue of sports games. This game also linked up with the superlative Mario Golf for Game Boy Color. They're very different games, and the handheld version is probably even better thanks to its brilliant RPG elements, but together they make an unbeatable pair. When we're disappointed that later games like Mario Golf: Super Rush don't match the quality of older entries, it's Mario Golf that we're remembering with a faraway wistful look in our eyes.3. Mario Tennis (GBC)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: CamelotRelease Date: 16th Jan 2001 (USA) / 2nd Feb 2001 (UK/EU)Available On: Nintendo Switch OnlineWhat's a Mario sports game without iconic characters such as *checks notes*... Alex, Kate, and Harry, eh?Camelot's handheld Mario sports entries were bizarre; not only is Mario absent from this game until you unlock him in the story mode... but there's a story mode.Mario Tennis may not have swords, magic, or random encounters, but each Tennis match is tied together in a charming overworld that feels like it's ripped straight out of a traditional RPG. Just imagine rounds of Tennis replacing battles and it becomes much clearer why many consider these more than simple sports games - and some of the best games in Mario's sporty lineup.2. Mario Tennis (N64)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: CamelotRelease Date: 28th Aug 2000 (USA) / 3rd Nov 2000 (UK/EU)Available On: NSO + Expansion PackThe first in the Mario Tennis series (second, if you count Mario's Tennis for the Virtual Boy) was one half of a winning doubles team in the Mushroom Kingdom sports department from Camelot the studio also released the brilliant Mario Golf for N64, as well as Game Boy Color versions of each game that linked up with their home console cousins via the Transfer Pak.Mario's played a lot of tennis over the years, but this remains one of his finest on-court displays.1. Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour (GCN)Publisher: Nintendo / Developer: CamelotRelease Date: 29th Aug 2003 (USA) / 18th Jun 2004 (UK/EU)We're quite partial to the Nintendo 64 entry in the series, but as we've seen from the many excellent entries on this list, developer Camelot knows what it's doing and didn't do much wrong when it came to the excellent GameCube iteration.Featuring 16 characters and courses containing Mushroom Kingdom staples such as warp pipes and Chain Chomps, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour takes things up a gear without reinventing the game, making every bunker and green look suitably lovely and introducing some fun extra modes.Given the dev's history and impressive catalogue of games involving Mario smacking balls of various sizes as hard as possible, MGTT is hardly revolutionary. But there's only so much you can do with golf before it turns into something that isn't really golf anymore. Ultimately, there aren't many better ways to spoil a walk than this. And there's the whistle! Or the winning point! Or, erm, the final golfer has entered the clubhouse. It's time for the medal ceremony, to shake hands with royals, pick up a shiny plate and all that game.Best Mario Sports Games FAQBefore we walk around the pitch kissing a trophy and shaking it at the crowd for 45 minutes, let's hit the pundit box to answer a few common questions. What was the first Mario sports game?Technically, the first Mario sports game was NES Open Golf Tournament known as Mario Open Golf in Japan which released for the Famicom on 20th September 1991, with the NES version following in North America soon after and Europe teeing up in June 1992.A 1991 Nintendo Players Guide called Mario Mania flagged the player character of 1985's Golf as everyone's favourite plumber, although there's no such mention in the game or its manual and in Japan this Mario-like character was known as Ossan (who turned up years later in Captain Rainbow). However, the Western box art for the 1989/1990 Game Boy port of Golf clearly shows Mario hitting a ball onto the green, so the first sports game starring Mario is open to debate! The first Mario sports game released internationally with 'Mario' in the title in every territory was Camelot's Mario Golf for N64, which launched in Japan on 11th June 1999.However, further complicating things, Mario cameoed in various Nintendo sports games since the early Famicom days. More on that after the break...Hang on, what about [insert Nintendo sports game without Mario in the title but with Mario in it]?Over the years, Mario has popped up in various sports games - and he's even playable in some of them. Many early Nintendo games featured him in some capacity, as a referee for example (Tennis, Punch-Out!!).A few console generations later, Mario Luigi, and Peach would pop up as playable characters in EA's NBA Street V3 and SSX On Tour for GameCube. But these aren't Mario Sports games just because there are Mario characters in them!Which Mario sports games are on Nintendo Switch Online? Here's a list of all the Mario sports games currently playable on Switch with an NSO subscription.NESNES Open Tournament GolfGame Boy (Color)Mario GolfMario TennisN64Mario GolfMario Tennis Every retro game available with an NSO sub (plus the Expansion Pack)How can I change the ranking in this article?Disagree with this ranking? • UK Charts: Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Pushes Donkey Kong Further Down
    www.nintendolife.com
Slippery slope.Gosh, you can really feel Nintendo's distinct lack of output at the moment, huh? With the Switch 2 on the horizon and nothing of particular significance now until Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition on 20th March, the UK Charts is mostly comprised of evergreen titles.Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is hanging in there, for sure, but it's slowly falling down the ranks thanks in part to the debut of Kingdom Come: Deliverance II at number one. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has also be supplanted by EA Sports FC 25, but its continued presence in the top ten long after its 2017 release continues to delight us.Read the full article on nintendolife.com

Its sequel, FUR Squadron Phoenix, was announced early last year and developer Raptor Claw Games has this week confirmed that it is coming to Switch 2.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube796kWatch on YouTube The dev has teased that the first FUR Squadron will be playable on the new Nintendo hardware thanks to the console's backwards compatibility in the past, but the latest tweet specifically states that the sequel is "Coming to PC and Switch 2 this year". • Forget Microsoft, Another Company Apparently Wanted To Buy Nintendo Back In The Day
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: Nintendo LifeWe've heard about a few companies with dreams of purchasing Nintendo over the years (*cough* Microsoft *cough*), and it turns out that there was another big ol' American conglomerate looking to snap it up back in the day, too (thanks, Gamespot). That is according to the latest episode of the Grit Podcast, where host Joubin Mirzadegan was joined by former Activision CEO Bobby Kotick and former EA CCO Bing Gordon to discuss the pair's experiences in the games industry.During a chat about Kotick's relationship with Berkshire Hathaway vice chairman Charlie Munger, he stated that Munger's conglomerate had once considered picking up Nintendo you know, because that's the kind of off-the-cuff decision that a business as big as Berkshire Hathaway can make.Kotick claims that this discussion came in the same meeting that Munger expressed an interest in buying Vivendi's stake in Activision despite, as Kotick puts it, him having no interest in video games, considering the medium "a step removed from gambling".Interestingly, this section of the conversation appears to have been removed from all instances of the podcast (Spotify, Apple, YouTube etc.), with the edit now jumping to Mirzadegan's follow-up question on Vivendi. Fortunately, the attached transcript in the former two instances still gives an insight into what was said, so here's Kotick's comment, according to the Apple Podcasts transcript:He goes, "You know, I was looking at a couple other companies in your sector. I think if we bought yours, we should buy that company Nintendo too". He said, "Have you guys looked at it?"And we're like, "Yeah, it was trading 13 billion with 7 billion in cash". And so he goes, "You know, I don't think anything's gonna go really bad before I'm dead [...] and then if it goes bad after I'm dead, they'll just chalk it up to the folly of an 82 year old. So you don't have to be so concerned about disappointing me.Of course, this was just a meeting, and none of the deals ever ended up coming to fruition Activision bought the Vivendi shares and, unsurprisingly, Berkshire Hathaway never grabbed Nintendo but it's a crazy 'what if' scenario to consider.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube796kIf Berkshire Hathaway has never entered your sphere, this is the Warren Buffett-run conglomerate with shares in the likes of Apple, Amazon, Bank of America and more. It is one of the largest US corporations by total revenue and recently became the country's first non-technology company to be valued at over $1 trillion. Imagine if Nintendo decisions had to go through that.Munger passed away in 2023, the same year that Kotick stood down as CEO of Activision Blizzard following Microsoft's acquisition. At the time, Kotick had been at the centre of numerous controversies and allegations which were denied by both Kotick and the company before settlements were reached prior to his departure. As we said, this isn't the first time we've heard of big companies eyeing up Nintendo for a potential buyout. Microsoft reportedly left Nintendo "laughing their asses off" when they approached them with a buyout back in the day, and leaked internal emails from Xbox's Phil Spencer back in 2023 revealed that the company was still considering an acquisition. "Go ahead and bring that extra CRT".Trains are great. We love a good train ride. It's even better these days given the advancements in technology, space, and comfort (though granted, there's still also a load of work to be done; especially in the UK), making particularly lengthy journeys a joy if you happen to have some suitable entertainment with you.Amtrak, the national passenger railroad company in North America, is seemingly going one step further in promoting its onboard capabilities, specifying its suitability for gamers in particular. As spotted by user Smyles on social media, Amtrak is specifically encouraging passengers to bring along CRT displays to help facilitate onboard Super Smash Bros. • Star Fox Dev Wants To Work With CD Projeck Red On Star Wars, Of All Things
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: Nintendo LifeWith the upcoming launch of Omega 6: The Triangle Stars on 28th February 2025, creator, ex-Nintendo dev, and Star Fox 64 art director Takaya Imamura has been doing the marketing rounds over the last few weeks. In a new interview with GamesRadar+, Imamura was asked about a potential dream collaboration in the world of game development. Given that he's spent a great deal of his career at Nintendo a company that would no doubt top the list of dream collaborations for many devs he expressed an interest in working alongside Polish studio CD Projekt Red, best known for The Witcher adaptations and Cyberpunk 2077.Not only that, but he also specified a particularly gargantuan media franchise, too. You already know what it is since it's in the ruddy headline, but yes, it's Star Wars:"To tell the truth, I really really like The Witcher 3. I don't know whether we'd get on, but I'd love to work with CD Projekt Red on something. I'd love to do a Star Wars game with them."Of course, both Star Fox and Omega 6 share some minor similarities with Star Wars, so Imamura's statement here doesn't sound totally out of whack. Given the (eventual) acclaim surrounding both The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 too, it could well be a great fit.Naturally, however, such an eventuality seems remote at best; the idea of CD Projekt Red commencing work on something as big as Star Wars while it's right in the middle of development for The Witcher IV is highly unlikely. Relying exclusively on big IP would be a "big mistake""I've been dying to play it"What do you make of Imamura's statement here? Do you have a dream collaboration you'd like to see come to fruition? • Random: Someone's Created A Motorised Mario Kart LEGO Set
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: Illumination / NintendoNintendo and Lego have already dipped their toes into the Mario Kart series with some official sets, but if we're being honest, we're not overly keen on the output so far. It's just lacking some of that signature Nintendo ingenuity, y'know? So, we were absolutely thrilled when we stumbled across this stunning Lego Mario Kart concept built by user Bbeethoven99 on Reddit that utilises a conveyor belt mechanism to simulate the feeling of movement. Essentially, the rainbow road track rotates around the conveyor belt, while the kart in the centre shifts left and right according to the steering wheel on the front.Check it out:It reminds us of the way the NES Lego kit works in that the Super Mario Bros. level rotates via a crank mechanism, with Mario himself suspended from the left-hand side. Of course, the concept shown here is significantly more complex, with the creator confirming that the key shown on the bottom right of the device is used to power it up.Unfortunately, given that you can't submit new concepts to the 'Lego Ideas' scheme if it's for an existing license, it's highly unlikely we'll see anything similar in an official capacity. Shame we'd gladly part ways with our hard-earned cash for something like this. • Nope, Monster Hunter Wilds Producer Still Won't Spill The Beans On A Switch 2 Port
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: CapcomThanks to Monster Hunter Wilds' recent beta tests and ever-closer release date (28th Feb), all eyes are on what's next for the series. Importantly, this is a next-gen entry and, despite the wishes of Capcom's investors, that means it's not scheduled to come to Switch. But what about Switch 2? That's what series producer Ryozo Tsujimoto and director Yuya Tokuda were asked in a recent interview with Spanish outlet Gamereactor. While the pair obviously didn't spill the beans on any kind of Switch 2 confirmation, Tsujimoto did share some insight into the team's thoughts on the upcoming hardware: namely, they want more info too.The Monster Hunter producer said that he's "in the same position everyone else is with the Switch 2". While the team will be looking into "the nature of the hardware and how we'll be using it best" in the future, Tsujimoto said that there's nothing to be announced for the time being. You'll find the producer's full quote below, as translated by Gamereactor:Of course, with relation to platforms for Monster Hunter Wilds, we have nothing extra to announce beyond what's already out there. But we're also kind of in the same position everyone else is with the Switch 2. It's such a brand new announcement, and we would need to take time over the coming future to learn exactly the nature of the hardware and how we'll be using it best. And that's something that is going to be in the future for us.Hmm. We struggle to believe that a team as big as Capcom has been kept in the dark about Switch 2 and its capabilities, though Tsujimoto does hit on an important point there: we have no idea how powerful the hardware is going to be. We've heard rumours that Nintendo is mustering PS4-level juice in its next hybrid, but Wilds is set to be a big game; will the Switch 2 even be able to handle it?We have to assume that Tsujimoto already knows the answer to that, but for now, at least, we'll be waiting for the official word from Nintendo before we set our hearts on the next Monster Hunter entry coming our way. • Talking Point: Why An LCD Screen Isn't The End Of The World For Switch 2
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: Ollie Reynolds / Nintendo LifeThe reveal of Switch 2 back in January answered some burning questions but mainly it confirmed rumoured details and leaked info regarding the size, shape, and magnetic Joy-Con of Nintendo's next console. Annoyingly, there are still a lot of unanswered questions and the platform holder is keeping shtum until 2nd April. One big question is about the screen: Will Switch 2 have an LCD display like the original Switch or a gloriously vibrant OLED panel like the boring-but-appropriately-named Switch OLED Model?Rumours suggest that Nintendo is saving pennies with a cheaper LCD panel this time, which is a disappointment to anyone who's been enjoying better contrast and more vibrant colours since October 2021. It seems unthinkable that the new Switch might have a screen that's technically inferior to the console we've been rocking for three-and-a-half years, but it's a distinct possibility! But is it really as bleak as all that? When we've got the thing in our hands, will we be fixating on a lack of individually illuminated pixels? Do we pine for them on our other devices? While we wait for official confirmation of the Switch 2 screen specs and more, Team NL sat down to discuss the pros and cons of nOLED.Nintendo Life Staff: Gavin Lane (editor), Alana Hagues (deputy editor), Jim Norman (staff writer), Ollie Reynolds (staff writer).Image: NintendoGAVIN: So, while we await official confirmation, weve been operating on the assumption that Switch 2 wont have an OLED screen for a while now. First question, then: Do you have a Switch OLED, and is there anything not to like about it?OLLE: Yes and no. No, meaning theres nothing not to like about it. As far as screens go, its about as pleasant as you could hope for. Yes, the resolution is somewhat limited, but even with the added size over the OG Switch, it still looks great. Its pretty wonderful.JIM: Same here. I put off getting an OLED for a couple of years after the marketing failed to really hit me with a 'You need one of these. Right now.' But then I saw one in the wild and was totally sold. Im a big fan. No complaints here. How much of an upgrade is the Switch OLED's screen?ALANA: I also didnt grab an OLED initially because I spent more time playing docked than handheld for a good while. Then I tried one and I dropped the dollars on it pretty soon after. I almost exclusively play handheld as a result, now. Its kind of amazing to think about how poor some of Nintendos handheld screens used to be; the Game Boy, original un-backlit GBA, the first 3DS, etc. Oh, how far weve come.GAVIN: Nintendo does have form when it comes to er, suboptimal screen experiences in the first iteration of its hardware. However, thinking back, I dont remember being massively disappointed with the Switchs screen - not until I saw the OLED Model, which made the launch version look like a big grey post-it note. Does anyone remember the screen being a sticking point in 2017?I have a PS Portal now which is a nOLED device and, Ive gotta say, I think the screen is excellent.ALANA: Nope, certainly not. I was just in awe of the whole 'Switch' experience at the time, and the screen was decent enough. Not a PS Vita but, yknow, good enough.OLLE: Same here; screen quality didnt even enter my mind in 2017 because I was just too entranced by the hybrid concept. I also didnt go for the OLED straight away because I was convinced that the original was enough. It was only when I went hands-on that I realised just how much of an upgrade it was.GAVIN: I happened to see a Switch OLED on a store shelf a few days after launch and used this job as an excuse to pick it up there and then. I got a deal on one of those LG OLED TVs in 2018 or 2019 and immediately couldn't unsee the drab greys in handheld mode. Since then Ive become a bit of a screen snob! Is anyone else rocking an OLED television?OLLE: Yes indeed, I nabbed the LG C3 last year; 65 inches. Its beautiful.ALANA: Weve come very close a few times, but the one someone is adamant about getting is a little priceyJIM: I dream of having the money for an OLED TV but other stuff has always got in the way. One day, lad.A launch Switch vs. an OLED Model (Please note that capturing the differences between these screens is tough in photos, so please use the images on this page as a rough guide only!) Image: Gavin Lane / Nintendo LifeGAVIN: Having had the telly, thats the main reason I was so disappointed hearing that Switch 2 likely wont have an OLED panel. It feels like such a massive step backwards from the delicious, inky blacks and the retina-searing colour of the current model. Do you have any other devices that do or dont have OLEDs? Do you wish they did?JIM: Ill admit that Im not always up to date with tech specs, so when I first saw the Switch OLED, the big selling point was that bigger screen and smaller bezel. I have a PS Portal now which is a nOLED device and, Ive gotta say, I think the screen is excellent. Sure, the colours (or lack of them) dont always pop as much, but its still very crisp.Image: Ollie Reynolds / Nintendo LifeALANA: I dont have a PS Portal, but I do have an old Steam Deck. I know the older screen is just 'okay' in many peoples eyes, and the bezel is pretty big, but I dont mind it. Its a better-quality LCD than the OG Switch, for example, so I can live with it. Plus, a Steam Deck OLED is a lot more expensive than a Switch OLED, so Im not sure I want to go through the hassle of swapping and upgrading.GAVIN: The bezel is an interesting point well come back to, but PS Portal is a great comparison given that its likely a very close match for what Switch 2 is rumoured to offer in the screen department: a 1080p, 8-inch LCD. Youve got a PS Portal too, right Ollie? When you use it, do you at any point think, Man, if only this were an OLED panel!?OLLIE: Not at all. Its clear that LCD technology has come a long way since 2017; better resolution, viewing angles, backlights, all that good stuff. The difference between the PS Portal and the Switch OLED is a bit more apparent when putting them side-by-side, but when Im just playing it naturally on the sofa with nothing to compare it to, the Portal is an absolutely beautiful device with a superb screen. At no point did I think, Oh fiddle, these blacks need to be more inky.Inky and the grey, grey, grey... Images: Ollie Reynolds / Nintendo LifeGAVIN: Yeah, weve come a long way from the old TN panels from years before that, too, with dodgy colours that you couldnt see properly if you were sitting at an angle. I havent seen the Portal in action firsthand, but the pics you sent over show it off very favourably. So in general, it seems were not too worried about Switch 2 being nOLED at launch, is that right?OLLIE: I mean, it would be great if it launched with an OLED panel, but Im not going to lose sleep over it.JIM: Ill be so relieved to have the damn thing in my hands that I dont think Ill spare a thought for lacking any pop.ALANA: The initial rumours had me worried, but now Im not. A lot of reflection and chatting with everyone here over the past few months has reminded me that yes, LCD can be good now.GAVIN: Its ironic that the Vita turned so many of us on to the idea of an OLED handheld screen, and now the Portal is making us feel okay about an LCD. Thanks, Sony! Not unattractive, right? Image: Aaron Bayne / Nintendo LifeOkay, before we wrap up, I want to ask two things. Firstly, a hypothetical: If Nintendo offered an OLED version from launch that was identical apart from the screen, would you pay more to get it? If so, how much more?when Im just playing it naturally on the sofa with nothing to compare it to, the Portal is an absolutely beautiful device with a superb screenJIM: I could see myself coughing up some extra cash just to have the best of the best. Its not something I can see Nintendo doing, honestly, but Im sure Id fall for it all the same. As for how much: the difference between a launch Switch and an OLED was, what? 30 or something? Id do that again for Switch 2 in a heartbeat. [Note. Switch launched at 279.99 but was 20 cheaper by 2021 when the OLED Model launched for 309.99.]OLLIE: Yeah, Id happily pay a bit more if the option were there; around 40 - 50 seems reasonable to me. The extra cash is nothing if it means providing our lovely community with the very best, reputable Switch 2 reviews on this here internet, only on Nintendo Life dot com!ALANA: Id also grab an OLED if it came day one, but Im not sure Id pay more than 50-80 extra for it. Itd have to be a huge upgrade, and we dont know how good the Switch 2 screen actually is right now.GAVIN: Interesting that wed all dig deep if the option were there at launch. Nintendo has us all hooked for the Switch 2 OLED Model in 2028, it seems. Okay, final question. Screen type aside, how are we feeling about that bezel on Switch 2?Significant side bezel Image: NintendoOLLE: Ohhhh, I was a bit miffed when I first saw it. But when I realised that the large side bezels were possibly due to the Joy-Con being inserted into the main body, I didnt mind quite so much. It looks fine, and Im sure the larger screen size will mitigate any initial concerns.JIM: Its not something that immediately stood out to me in the reveal trailer. Looking at it closer in the weeks since, sure, its a little beefier on the sides than Id like (probably because Ive grown used to the OLED and Portal), but it's not offputting.ALANA: This is where the older Steam Deck has prepped me a little. I didnt even really notice the bezel on reveal, and it was only when Ollie pointed it out that I saw it was bigger than Switch OLED. Im at least glad its smaller than the Switch nOLED! The top and bottom look smaller. So its not a big issue right now. Well see when we actually get our hands on it.GAVIN: Going back to my launch-day HAC-001 to shoot some comparison shots reminded me how much of an upgrade the OLED Model was in size terms, too. Im sure when were settling in for an epic session of 'Mario Odyssey 2: Lost in New Donk' Ill forget all about any bezel or brightness and contrast concerns.JIM: Ill be fine and dandy until they reveal the Switch TWOLED and I start sizing up my OG screen again. Comparison is the thief of Joy-Con, and all that.Let us know in the poll below how integral OLED screens are to your gaming enjoyment these days, and whether a potential lack of one would influence any Switch 2 purchase decisions.Assuming Switch 2 won't have an OLED screen, how does that affect your opinion of the system? • Retailer GAME Accused Of "Scalping" Pokmon Cards Thanks To Insane Delivery Fees
    www.nintendolife.com
It hurt itself in its confusion.GAME staff have accused the UK retailer of "scalping" Pokmon cards after the company began hitching massive shipping costs to the online sale of 'Prismatic Evolutions' mini tins (thanks, Eurogamer). These mini tins are no novelty for a TCG expansion. They contain two booster packs and a collectible coin and retail for 10.99, tidy. The problem is that GAME is adding a bulky 19.99 "Oversized delivery" fee on top of that, making the overall purchase a little less 'mini' than the name suggests.Read the full article on nintendolife.com

  • You May Be Due A Refund As Nintendo Alters Tax Rate On Select Museum Gifts
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: NintendoNintendo has announced that it is offering partial refunds on select items from the Nintendo Museum store, 'Bonus Stage'.As reported by Sora News 24, Nintendo Museum Cookies, Pull-out Pikmin Cookies, and Animal Crossing: New Horizons - Polvorones are all subject to the refund offer, with Nintendo stating that an incorrect consumption tax rate was applied to all three.Essentially, Japan has a 10% tax rate on all consumer products bar essential items such as food, which are subject to an 8% tax rate. Items such as alcohol were deemed to be non-essential and therefore subject to the 10% rate, while restaurant food was also considered luxury enough to be given the full 10% rate too.It seems that the items in question here should have simply been given the 8% tax rate rather than the full 10% understandable given that the fancy packaging containing the food could be considered non-essential, in a way.As such, Nintendo is looking to offer customers a partial refund to cover the difference in price. Now, we're only looking at a maximum of 30 yen here, but if you're particularly frugal with your money and happened to have purchased one (or more) of these, then you might want to pursue the refund. Here's a look at the full info from Nintendo:- Nintendo Museum CookiesCorrect price: 1,620 yen (tax included)Incorrect Price: 1,650 yen (tax included)*Price difference of 30 yen- Pull-out Pikmin CookiesCorrect price: 1,080 yen (tax included)Incorrect Price: 1,100 yen (tax included)*Price difference of 20 yen- Animal Crossing: New Horizons - PolvoronesCorrect price: 1,458 yen (tax included)Incorrect Price: 1,485 yen (tax included)*Price difference of 27 yenIt's not known exactly how long this has been the case, but it's possible that the items may have been incorrectly priced since the grand opening of the Museum in October 2024.Needless to say, if you feel like you're due a refund from Nintendo (perhaps you bought these items in bulk as gifts), then you can fill in the request form via the official website. • Lunar Remastered Collection Physical Release Will Not Be Up For Pre-Order (North America)
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: GungHo Online EntertainementWith the Lunar Remastered Collection just over two months away, RPG fans will be able to get their hands on two beloved turn-based adventures from the Sega Saturn and PlayStation era. Today, ahead of the game's release, publisher GungHo Online Entertainment has shared some details about the game regarding the North American release. In a fleshed-out FAQ section on the official website, GungHo reconfirms that the game will be launching both physically and digitally, exclusively on Amazon in North America. Store pages are even up. However, you won't be able to pre-order the game ahead of its release, and instead, you'll have to buy it on release day.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube796kWatch on YouTube "We won't be offering preorders for this release," GungHo confirms, "but please note that it's not a limited release. There will be plenty of copies available for everyone interested." It also doesn't state whether the physical release will be available in-store. We sure hope so!If you're reading this from Europe, Clear River Games will be handling the physical release. Store pages have yet to go up yet. But at least the physical version won't be a limited release, so if you can't grab it on release day, you won't be missing out.Images: GungHo Online EntertainementStill, seems like an unusual decision, especially for a pair of games that are as expensive as they are today via their PlayStation rereleases. Copies regularly go hundreds of dollars even more if you have the complete special edition. The FAQs confirm that the Remastered Collection is based on the two "Complete" versions from the PlayStation, and that you'll be able to turn off the blur effect at the top and bottom of your screen.Lastly, there won't be any difficulty options in the full release, meaning if you get stuck, then it's time to grind away!Lunar Remastered Collection launches 18th April 2025. • Random: A Kirby Board Game? This Fortune Street Mod Brings The Dream To Life
    www.nintendolife.com
Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube796kLooking back on 2011's Fortune Street (or 'Boom Street' for those in Europe) today feels like a fever dream. A Wii board game starring Mario & co. that isn't Mario Party? One that's published by Nintendo but developed by Square Enix? And also features a handful of familiar faces from the Dragon Quest series? Sounds like something you'd find in a nasty AI-generated mash-up, no?Fortunately (heh), Fortune Street was anything but. Sure, the crossover never quite reached the heights of the Mario Party series, but the bonkers board game has still managed to build up quite the following in the years since even grabbing the attention of some rather talented modders.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube796kWatch on YouTube Clearly not content with the lack of Pink Puffball content, modder RyanDCB took matters into his own hands and tweaked Square Enix's Wii board game to be a little... pinker (thanks for the heads up, GamingReinvented).Introducing 'Kirby Street', a Fortune Street mod that puts Kirby and friends front and centre. RyanDCB started work on the project last year and, 26 new characters and 18 unique boards later, we'd be lying if we said that we weren't impressed. We've added a full trailer above, but look! It even has its own cover art!All of the original Fortune Street boards are still present and correct, but with all of the new assets and animations, this is quite the mod to behold. Heck, even the Mii characters have some fresh Kirby-themed accessories.Kirby's official board game adventures have previously been limited to little-known Wendy's tie-ins, but the mod is so well made that we're scratching our heads wondering why Nintendo hasn't put some of the Kirby crew into a dice-rolling design before if there's a big enough cast of characters to fill a racer, surely a board game wouldn't struggle. Now that we think about it, it's been a while since we've seen a new Kirby game come our way. There was a time when it felt like you couldn't go six months without that round little guy making a Direct appearance, but it's approaching two years since Return to Dream Land Deluxe landed on Switch. All eyes on that rumoured Planet Robobot port, then. Another stopgap? What do you make of this Fortune Street mod? • "Massive" Mario Kart LEGO Set Rumour Surfaces Online
    www.nintendolife.com
I'd be a lot more excited about Nintendo's non-game announcements if they could actually announce some games too.I know the growing assumption is that we're going to get a load of great game announcements in April, but seriously, Nintendo need to spend some of their mountains of Switch cash on some developers...Eleven years since a new Donkey Kong game is too long. Star Fox is MIA. Mario Odyssey feels like a lifetime ago. Mario Kart does have something lined up, but it's still coming way, way too far down the road after the Wii U release of 8.Consider this. If Nintendo release a new Donkey Kong game every 11 years... how many more Donkey Kong games will you get to play in your lifetime?Meanwhile Call of Duty serves up new dross every frigging year. Doesn't seem fair to me!

Its a snapshot of a delightfully experimental era for fighting games, one that the Dreamcast played a major role in. If youre anything like me, with a hunger for oddball games, theres a good chance youll find your next favorite fighting game here."Destin also enjoyed his "first look" preview:"If it's feeling this good now, I'm pretty optimistic with how good it's going to be at launch...this a great collection...getting to play Capcom vs. SNK was realy, really fun."Restart also enjoyed reliving Capcom's earlier games with this latest collection:"I recently had a hands-on preview with Capcom Fighting Collection 2, and I'm pleased to report that, much like the previous compilations the studio has released (Capcom Fighting Collection and Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics), this new release comes filled to the brim with quality-of-life changes that maintain the sanctity of the original titles while modernizing the packages to meet our current standards. Those of you who appreciate casual adventures like taking a walk in a forest will be sure to enjoy what Abz has to offer, as the dreamlike visuals, entrancing orchestral score, and deliberately sedate pace do a fantastic job of drawing the player into this alien world. Abz isn't a game about winning, but about the journey (no pun intended) you take getting there.Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown Deluxe Edition (Switch)Publisher: Bandai Namco / Developer: Project AcesRelease Date: 11th Jul 2024 (USA) / 11th Jul 2024 (UK/EU)32.99 (-34%)Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown is the absolute pinnacle of the series and despite coming to Switch over five years after other platforms, this 'impossible' Switch conversion does very little to degrade the experience. Long-time franchise players and military aviation enthusiasts will be overwhelmed by the fan service at every turn, from craters on the ground to airplanes, liveries, callsigns, and emblems shouting out to previous entries. We understand the genre is uniquely niche, but if this is your first foray into the franchise, this conversion is a perfect gateway into this rich, revered series. Although you could argue its similarity to one or two recent releases, it trumps the competition with incredibly slick combat, simple and satisfying progression, and varied environments and enemies. The difficulty ramps up heavily as you progress to the later levels, so the inability to change difficulty on-the-fly may prove a bit of an issue for some players. Push through, however, and youll find Archvale to be one of the most satisfying twin-stick games available right now.Axiom Verge 2 (Switch eShop)Publisher: Thomas Happ Games / Developer: Thomas Happ GamesRelease Date: 11th Aug 2021 (USA) / 11th Aug 2021 (UK/EU)8.09 (-50%)Axiom Verge is a remarkably tough act to follow, but Thomas Happ managed to do it again in producing a pitch-perfect, excellently paced Metroidvania adventure. Axiom Verge 2 perfectly balances familiar elements that made the original great and trying out new ideas that give the sequel its own identity, and while lovers of the first game may take some time to adjust, everything comes together and makes for a potent experience that no fan of the genre will want to miss out on. The mysterious atmosphere, thrilling pace, and fantastic world design all come together to make for a worthy follow-up that stands well on its own.Balatro (Switch eShop)Publisher: PlayStack / Developer: LocalThunkRelease Date: 20th Feb 2024 (USA) / 20th Feb 2024 (UK/EU)11.51 (-10%)Balatro is a roguelike for gamers who don't like roguelikes... and then everybody else on top of that. Not only does it give the Ragna saga a proper send-off with a story mode that's so rich in character development it could be a full anime season in its own right, but it offers a staggering number of modes to keep you playing long after the credits roll. It runs silky-smooth docked or in handheld modes and runs like a dream online. The lack of an English dub still rankles, and new adopters are going to have to do a lot of research to understand what's going on, but it's well worth the effort.BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle (Switch)Publisher: Arc System Works / Developer: Arc System WorksRelease Date: 5th Jun 2018 (USA) / 22nd Jun 2018 (UK/EU)4.49 (-75%)BlazBlue: Cross Tag Battle is an utterly accomplished 2D fighting game. It's bursting with content and featuring the visual spectacle of combat that uses up every single trick in the book. A few strange decisions aside, this title is a must for fighting game fans. Even if you're not a fan of any of the franchises represented in this game, you most certainly will be by the time you're done with this stacked fighting package.Blazing Chrome (Switch eShop)Publisher: The Arcade Crew / Developer: JoyMasherRelease Date: 11th Jul 2019 (USA) / 11th Jul 2019 (UK/EU)4.58 (-70%)For those longing for a time when side-scrolling shooters ruled the roost, Blazing Chrome is exactly what you're looking for. Perfect for short sessions, its slick gameplay and old-school art direction make for an astonishingly fun game full of explosions, epic set pieces and spectacular boss battles. Its brutal difficulty may not be for everyone, but if you're up for the challenge, then get ready for one of the most accomplished 2D action titles in years.Botany Manor (Switch eShop)Publisher: Whitethorn Games / Developer: Balloon StudiosRelease Date: 9th Apr 2024 (USA) / 9th Apr 2024 (UK/EU)17.99 (-20%)It looks like The Witness and it plays a bit like StreetPass Garden, but Botany Manor blooms into something that's not only entirely its own, but also something quite special. Don't let its cosy aesthetics fool you Botany Manor is packed with nicely challenging, well-designed puzzles, and isn't afraid to tackle heavy subjects, too.Card Shark (Switch eShop)Publisher: Devolver Digital / Developer: NerialRelease Date: 2nd Jun 2022 (USA) / 2nd Jun 2022 (UK/EU)6.29 (-65%)Card Shark is the kind of game that at first blush seems like it just wont work. Lots of dialogue bookended by brief, simplistic minigame sequences seems like it would make for an experience that would lose its luster quickly, yet we couldnt put it down. Witty writing, high-stakes gameplay, and a gorgeous art style all come together here to make for a game thats well-executed and unique in its appeal. If youre looking to try something awesome that notably bucks most modern gaming trends, Card Shark is absolutely something wed recommend, well worth your time and money.Chained Echoes (Switch eShop)Publisher: DECK13 Spotlight / Developer: Matthias LindaRelease Date: 8th Dec 2022 (USA) / 8th Dec 2022 (UK/EU)18.39 (-20%)Chained Echoes is a wonderful mash-up of '90s JRPG tropes, masterfully woven together to produce an experience that feels simultaneously nostalgic and fresh. A well-paced story, unconventional progression system, tactical combat system, and expansive world all come together to make for a game that is shockingly one of the very best RPGs that we played in 2022.Really, theres no place where it feels like Chained Echoes drops the ball, which is all the more impressive when you consider that the vast majority of it was put together by one person. It stands as a shining example of everything that makes RPGs great.Chicken Police - Paint it RED! (Switch eShop)Publisher: HandyGames / Developer: The Wild GentlemenRelease Date: 5th Nov 2020 (USA) / 5th Nov 2020 (UK/EU)6.29 (-65%)An extremely impressive first game from The Wild Gentlemen, Chicken Police - Paint it RED! is one of the best visual novel/adventure games we've played in a long, long time and one hell of an absorbing tale. It looks and runs great on the Switch, with only a couple of really minuscule interface issues which are easily ignored. At roughly eight or nine hours, the story is surprisingly lengthy, but we were never bored and wanted to investigate every little thing just to wring out more precious droplets of banter and fascination. Chicken Police is a polished, captivating experience and we're very excited for whatever's coming next from this team.Cuphead (Switch eShop)Publisher: StudioMDHR / Developer: StudioMDHRRelease Date: 18th Apr 2019 (USA) / 18th Apr 2019 (UK/EU)11.89 (-30%)Cuphead was an absolute masterpiece when it originally launched on Xbox One and nothing has been sacrificed in its move to the Switch.A run-and-gun boss battler dressed up like a 1930s Fleischer or Disney animated short, its the same visually jaw-dropping, aurally delightful, knuckle-whiteningly difficult game it was on Microsofts console and the Switchs library is all the better for its presence. Its focus on intense boss battles wont be to everyones tastes, but as long as you know what youre getting yourself into we cant recommend it enough. Just look at it!And the Delicious Last Course (also in this sale for 5.43) is the icing on the cake, too.Cyber Shadow (Switch eShop)Publisher: Yacht Club Games / Developer: Mechanical Head StudiosRelease Date: 26th Jan 2021 (USA) / 26th Jan 2021 (UK/EU)10.79 (-40%)If you consider yourself a fan of retro action platformers, you owe it to yourself to pick up Cyber Shadow. Its clear in virtually every facet of Cyber Shadows design that this project was a labour of love and that its designer is intimately familiar with what makes the stalwarts of this beloved genre so great.Well-built levels, authentic presentation, tight controls, and high difficulty all combine to make this a supreme and focused experience, and one that we can easily say is well worth your time. Mechanical Head Studios set a high bar with its inaugural release.Death's Door (Switch eShop)Publisher: Devolver Digital / Developer: Acid NerveRelease Date: 23rd Nov 2021 (USA) / 23rd Nov 2021 (UK/EU)4.49 (-75%)Death's Door is a modern classic, utilizing old gameplay ideas in a new setting to make for a short and sweet experience you wont want to miss. The snappy combat, rewarding exploration, and relaxing music will stick with you once you've finished, and while it may not have anything 'new' to offer, Deaths Door is so high quality that youll hardly have time to think about its lack of innovation.Wed give this one a very high recommendation, especially to any fans of Zelda or Soulslike games Acid Nerve has crafted an experience thats absolutely worth your time and money.Detention (Switch eShop)Publisher: Coconut Island Games / Developer: Red Candle GamesRelease Date: 1st Mar 2018 (USA) / 1st Mar 2018 (UK/EU)4.74 (-50%)Detention is another horror classic that deserves a place on your Switch. Its story has an important message as it introduces themes through the eyes of a child that only escalate the horror.Through a terrifying atmosphere, chilling ghouls, and a soundtrack that will sink its teeth into you, Detention is a suitably horrifying title that needs to be experienced firsthand.Dicefolk (Switch eShop)Publisher: Good Shepherd Entertainment / Developer: LEAP Game StudiosRelease Date: 20th Jun 2024 (USA) / 20th Jun 2024 (UK/EU)8.76 (-35%)An attractive art style, strong combat system, and meaningful player choices make Dicefolk a brilliant addition to the library, as it manages to feel fresh without getting too far away from the core ideas that make these sorts of games so addictive and popular.Dicefolk is a good entry point to the genre, in fact; approachable without being patronising and its tons of fun once you get a grasp of its various quirks.

  • Opinion: The Okami Sequel Simply Has To Come To Switch 2
    www.nintendolife.com
Image: CapcomIt's been an exciting few months for Okami fans, huh?Nearly 19 years after the release of the PS2 original, Capcom finally confirmed that a sequel is now officially in development at The Game Awards 2024. Plus, it's being developed at new studio Clovers under the direction of creator Hideki Kamiya.Speaking of which, the outspoken auteur recently found himself in the news again after he expressed his desire that fans not play the 2008 Wii port of the game, explaining that it isn't the true original and therefore didn't benefit from his direct involvement. Instead, he pointed toward Okami HD as a good starting point.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube796kWatch on YouTube Now, we're not going to completely align with Kamiya and say that you should avoid the Wii version of the game after all, it more than holds its own with the added motion controls but we do agree that Okami HD is probably the best version of the Zelda-inspired adventure. In fact, we'd actually go a step further and say that the Switch release specifically is the best representation of Kamiya's classic, and the reason behind this is why we're also hoping and praying that the eventual sequel will make its way to the Nintendo Switch 2.Image: CapcomSo what is it that has us revering the Switch version above all others? It's pretty simple: touchscreen controls, no doubt inspired by the original's spiritual successor on DS, Okamiden. When played in handheld mode, Okami HD on Switch utilises a combination of traditional button controls alongside touchscreen controls, and it's an absolute game-changer in our eyes. It completely revamps combat encounters. You see, bringing up the Celestial Brush, a unique mechanic in which you can conjure up items or attack enemies, essentially pauses the action when holding down 'B' on the Wii or 'R' on the Switch, allowing you ample time to wiggle the analogue stick around to draw your desired object. Even if it was just a straight slash across the screen, dragging the brush along with the stick felt like it took just a fraction too long in many cases. With the touch screen, it feels almost instantaneous, even though it still pauses the game. You can tap 'Y' a few times to unleash a basic combo and then boom, quickly swipe across the screen with your finger (without the need to also hold down 'R', we might add) to deal additional damage or wipe out a stunned enemy. It adds a satisfying rhythm to combat that simply wasn't present before. And yes, we know what you're thinking: don't the Wii motion controls effectively simulate the same thing? In a way, sure, but you have to consider where your cursor is when activating the Celestial Brush and the added sensitivity that naturally comes with motion controls. Those milliseconds all add up, y'know. Can you do this with an analogue stick? Well, yeah, but probably not as fast. Image: Ollie Reynolds / Nintendo LifeIt doesn't just benefit combat, either. Celestial Brush mechanics are frequently required during exploration, whether you simply need to add a sun in the sky to bring about the daytime or draw a bomb against a wall to unveil a secret passage. And all of this is made infinitely more intuitive with the addition of touchscreen controls. We know it's not hard to draw a circle with the analogue stick, but it's also not a particularly natural thing to do, either. Using your finger though? Yeah, it just feels right. It's way too early to say whether or not we can expect Okami 2 (or whatever it's likely to be called) on the Switch 2. Chances are we're at least two or three years away from its release, but even if that's the case, it will likely still arrive right when the Switch 2 is finding its groove, and we think it would be a perfect fit for Nintendo's upcoming console.Prettier visuals, a more expansive world, touchscreen controls... Oof, yeah we can't wait. What do you think, folks? Do you think Kamiya's Okami sequel would be a good fit for the Nintendo Switch 2? www.nintendolife.com
Image: Level-5After a handful of delays, we are slowly creeping up on the April 2025 release window for Level-5's much-anticipated Fantasy Life follow-up, Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time. With the countdown officially on (assuming it isn't pushed again, of course), Level-5 CEO Akihiro Hino has taken to Twitter to share a fresh look at the game and it's looking really rather swell.Translated via Google, Hino prefaced the screenshot drop by stating that major information reveals for the game have been slightly delayed by issues with "compatible models and new hardware" (what could he possibly be referring to there, eh?), but the visuals and content have developed to make the upcoming title "one of the best RPGs out there". No pressure there, then.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube796kWatch on YouTube What's more, the caption teases that Level-5 will have more Fantasy Life information for us "soon", so keep watching the skies for that one. While the Level-5 CEO didn't specify which platform the above screens were taken on, he has since shared a further three posts, which apparently show the game running on Switch. You'll find these additional Switch screenshots below, showcasing the single-player and multiplayer modes in action:Images: Level-5Images: Level-5Images: Level-5We'll be keeping an eye out for this supposed big information drop over the coming days. We still haven't completely ruled out the possibility of a February Nintendo Direct, but perhaps Level-5 has another Vision Showcase planned where it will finally give us a secure release date. Only time will tell.Aside from Fantasy Life, the studio is currently sitting on Professor Layton and the New World of Steam and Inazuma Eleven: Victory Road for 2025 releases. The crime-fighting RPG DECAPOLICE was delayed to 2026 late last year.
