The world-famous Dragon Ball saga is no stranger to game adaptations, but theres one Dragon Ball game series in particular that fans have held in high regard: The Budokai Tenkaichi series. The original Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi debuted on the PlayStation 2 back in 2005, followed by two sequels in 2006 and 2007 and a PSP installment in 2010.Now, after years of fans waxing nostalgic over their love of those classic titles, Bandai Namco Entertainment and developer Spike-Chunsoft are bringing back the much-beloved 3D arena-fighting gameplay of Budokai Tenkaichi in Dragon Ball Sparking Zero launching on PS5 October 11. We got our hands on a pre-release version of the game, and were here to tell you all about the awesome fighting that awaits.A universe-rocking rosterDragon Ball is a sprawling saga filled with a menagerie of memorable characters, and one of the first things youll notice about Sparking Zero is how huge the selection is. Besides familiar faces from Dragon Ball and Dragon Ball Z, youll be able to control numerous characters from Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Superand, if you preorder, youll have access to Goku (Mini) from the much-anticipated new Dragon Ball DAIMA series. Several characters have variations and transformations that reflect their growth over the series timeline, and these can be dramatically different from each other. Taking into account all of the characters, variations, fusions, and transformations, Sparking Zeros starting roster is a whopping 181 playable characters.But dont feel intimidated by the amount of choices you have: many of the base controls are shared between characters, so you should be able to pick up a new character quite easily. You can also equip various capsule items acquired in the in-game shop to bolster your characters base abilities if you want to give yourself a bit of a boost, along with cosmetic items to up your aesthetic power level.Theres a lot to do in Sparking Zero, but perhaps the best place to start is the Episode Battle, which has you playing through some of the series most important sagas through the eyes of its most prominent heroesor villains. We tried out a few characters in this mode: Gokus story and combat were a fairly simple introduction to the games mechanics, while characters like Frieza and Goku Black faced significantly more challenging one-against-many fights from early on. Depending on how fights go and the narrative choices you make, you might see the well-loved stories take some unexpected new directions.If youd prefer to get straight into battle, Tournament Mode is also open from the get-go. Here you can play recreations of famous events like the Cell Games and the Tournament of Power. You can even set up your own rules and fantasy bracket if youd like.We fight like SaiyansWhen you leap into a battle, youll be using 3D space to move in every direction to get the advantage over your foe as you dash, fly, attack, fire energy blasts, charge your ki, and react to your opponents actions. It feels incredible to utilize your combat techniques and the environment skillfully to get the upper hand over a dangerous foe.The Skill Count gauge charges up over the course of battle (indicated by a blue elliptical bar separate from your life and ki meters), and a large number shows your stock of charged skill bars. Certain combat abilities, like the new attack-absorbing Revenge Counter and transformations, require skill stocks, as well as bespoke abilities unique to each character, like Gokus famous Kaioken, that give effects like stat buffs and movement boosts.The visuals add tremendously to the experience, as well: as battles progress and heavy blows are exchanged, youll see certain characters become scuffed up and dirty, with torn and tattered clothes indicating just how fierce the fighting has become. Environments transform in realtime from the effects of energy surges and super-powered blows. When characters use skills and special attacks, youll see close-ups and visual flourishes that call upon some of the series most memorable and iconic images.Wishing dream battles into realityThe new Custom Battle mode lets you craft your own stories and battle scenarios. Select the player and enemy characters, add in some special settings (like setting lower health or turning transformations off). You can customize more than just the gameplay, too: the music, the intro and ending cinematics you can even add some mid-battle twists for a dramatic flourish if you want. If you need some inspiration, there are plenty of pre-made Bonus Battles designed by the developers to give you some ideas. Once youve made your epic encounter, you can upload it and share it with other Dragon Ball fans across the globe.As you create your battles and set up your dream matches, youll see firsthand just how many cool inter-character dialogue elements and interactions Sparking! Zero features. With such a huge roster, youll be able to have fights and team-ups between characters who would have never met in canonand you might be surprised at some of their conversations!We asked the games director, Jun Furutani, about these fun dialogue bits. Its really interesting to see the special interactions between two characters with similar backgrounds who would have never met in canon, he says. But there are surprises, tootake the villains Baby and Zamasu. Babys goal is to control life, while Zamasus is destroying all living things. Those two ideas cant coexist, so when you bring them together, youll see a very cool interaction. We want players to try out all sorts of combinations and see what they find.Thankfully, you wont have to wait much longer to see your most wished-for bouts come alive. Dragon Ball Sparking! Zero will debut on October 11, with Deluxe Edition and Ultimate Edition owners able to play three days earlier.

BioWares lore-rich fantasy RPG series makes its long-awaited return when Dragon Age: The Veilguard comes to PS5 on October 31, after nearly a decade since the last installment. The Veilguard takes place across the northern region of Thedas, giving players a chance to finally explore the magical city of Tevinter. As a first-time visitor to Thedas world of magic, my recent hands-on with the game was an enlightening introduction to the deep storytelling of the series grounded by the games intuitive real-time combat and enchanting visuals.Customize everythingMy hands-on journey began by thoroughly exploring The Veilguards extensive character creator, following an opening animation highlighting where the story left off in Dragon Age: Inquisition. The Dragon Age series is known to offer highly detailed character customization, but I was surprised to see just how in-depth The Veilguard went with options to customize nearly every physical aspect of your character, from diverse head and body shapes to tattoos (options for face and full body), make-up, and facial scars. In particular, the various hair textures shown in the selection of close to 100 hairstyles look so detailed and realistic that you can see the care developers put into each hair follicle.Once I finished customizing my character for nearly half an hour (I could have spent hours on this), I played around with the new lighting preview feature. The new feature allows you to see your character in up to four different lighting settings to ensure your creation is faithful to your vision before you commence your journey through Thedas.Similar to past games in the series the character creator is where you choose your combatants race and class. Additionally, The Veilguard adds a feature to pick between six Factions, including options for Grey Wardens, Veil Jumpers, Shadow Dragons, Lords of Fortune, the Mourn Watch, and Antivan Crows. Be sure to select carefully as a chosen Faction directly influences a characters unique backstory and even future dialogue choices.Combat with companionsThe fast-paced and intuitive combat in Dragon Age: The Veilguard was the cherry on top of my experience with the game. As a self-described beginner when it comes to most game genres, the combat controls were easy enough to pick up while providing a high ceiling for the more advanced players to put together combo attacks with companions.1/3Now showing slide 1 of 3Show allIn Dragon Age: The Veilguard you control your companions abilities through the new Ability Wheel, as opposed to switching between and fully controlling your party members like you could in Dragon Age: Inquisition. Pulling up the Ability Wheel halts the action and lets you trigger your personal and companions abilities. Switching between real-time combat and the Ability Wheel felt natural and served as a quick break from all-out action, giving me a chance to plan combo attacks with companions or trigger my own abilities. Punctuating combo attacks by unleashing an Ultimate ability served as one of the more satisfying tenets of the gameplay experience, though it was rare I was able to pull off such a feat.Trek through ThedasStepping foot in Minrathous, the capital of Tevinter, players are met with vivid colors and an impressively expansive depth of field. From the finely tuned details of raindrops splashing into puddles and broken-up concrete, to the sky-high architecture and statues seen from a distance, the visual fidelity of The Veilguard is truly immersive and encourages exploring freely.1/2Now showing slide 1 of 2Show allThe graphics especially shine when youre tasked to travel through the Arlathan Forest to find missing Veil Jumpers. The contrast in color of the shadow-casting trees is highlighted by sunlight peering through their branches, showing the attention to detail paid by the developers in terms of lighting and photorealism in varied environments.Friends help friendsEach companion I met on my voyage through Thedas made an impression and drew me deeper into the story, though my limited playing time didnt allow me to meet the whole cast.The companions are really the stars of the show just as much as anyone else, John Epler, Creative Director, BioWare.Early on youll meet Neve Gallus, the self-assured private investigator who helps locate Solas to prevent a major catastrophe from ensuing in the games prologue. Born and raised in Minrathous, Neves confident demeanor helps guide the team through Tevinter early in the game, and her Ice Breaker ability that rains down shards of ice on foes was a joy to activate.Theres so much to chew on when it comes to the depth of the character creator, RPG elements, and real-time combat in The Veilguard, but being able to quickly grasp the action basics allowed me to immerse in the world. The Veil between Thedas and the Fade lifts this Halloween, when Dragon Age: The Veilguard releases October 31 on PS5.

For example, annoying rival photographer Kent is blessed with some lavishly moving hair, and fans of Madonna the poodle will definitely get a kick out of her looking more like a well, poodle.Even the zombies have a greater variety of models and body shapes, which not only makes it more fun when taking snaps of them, but certain moves like Franks head stepping Zombie Ride become even more amusing.Modern and classic control optionsGet to grips with Frank quicker: Its frightening enough being surrounded by hordes of the undead, so if youre unfamiliar with Franks original controls never fear. You no longer need to choose between moving and shooting, making for far smoother gunplay. During moments where gun mastery is essential thats most boss battles in the game youre in for a much more accessible and dynamic fight, helped with the option of auto aim assist and a Heads-Up Display reticle.Defensive moves are easier to perform: A new dedicated dodge roll button offers pain-free evasion, but if Frank gets pinned by zombies you can tap a face button to escape instead of having to manically twirl the left stick.And, of course, if you want to keep the deliberate tension of the original, you can always revert back to the classic control set-up, too.Better save functionalityMore save points: Now you dont need to worry about getting to specific places like the bathrooms or security room beds to save your game. Every time you enter or exit a new area (usually denoted by a very short loading time) the game autosaves, reducing that previous dread of having to restart from the beginning due to being unexpectedly overrun. It personally meant I took more risks getting around Willamette Mall knowing my mistakes wouldnt be punished as badly compared to my exploration in the original.Improved survivor intelligenceImproved NPC intelligence: It was all too easy for your fellow survivors to get turned into zombie chow by getting caught on bits of the environment or not following you quickly enough in the original Dead Rising, something Capcom addresses in the Remaster. While you still need to be mindful of their surroundings, the NPCs have better pathfinding intelligence around obstacles, with some areas tweaked to let them navigate better in trickier locations.Undead aptitude: The improved AI isnt limited to survivors, either. Stumble across any of the armed zombie cops and theyll fire at you. Although thankfully theyre not the best of shots to be fair, they are aiming with undead eyeballs.A better life through the lensGet picture perfect: In all the zombie smashing chaos, its easy to forget that Franks only in this situation because he wants to get some world-changing snaps. Its been quite a long time since the pioneering fighting game franchise Fatal Fury has seen a proper new installment. Yes, characters from the Fatal Fury series have shown up in other games, but the last proper Fatal Fury game, Garou: Mark of the Wolves, hit arcades all the way back in 1999. 25 years later, the Legendary Wolves are back in action in Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, ready to captivate a new generation of fighting gamers and tie-up plot threads longtime fans have seen dangling for decades.To get a close-up look at Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, we sat down with director Hayato Konya and art director Yoichiro Soeda to discuss the games development, the new and returning faces, and what makes it special.A continuation long in the makingFatal Fury is among the pioneers of the fighting game genre. The original game followed martial artists Terry and Andy Bogard and their friend Joe Higashi on a quest to avenge the death of their adoptive father. It emphasized story and cinematics, ending with a shocking climactic scene where villain Geese Howard falls to his demise from a skyscraper. From that point on, Fatal Furys gameplay would evolve greatly. Still, the emphasis on stylish and memorable characters, action-film-inspired stories, and its vibrant Southtown setting would continue.In the very beginning, we had the concept where Fatal Fury was like a movie, where the protagonists had to work up to fight the big villain, Soeda said. It was popular, and players wanted more, so we kept expanding with each game. At one point, Terry takes on Geeses child Rock as his son. At the time, we didnt know where that would lead.Eventually, however, Rock became the new face of Fatal Fury.These wolves pack styleOne of the most striking elements of City of the Wolves is its bold, vibrant art style. The visuals were meant to evoke a mixture of American comic art and Japanese anime and appeal to both old and new players.We wanted the characters to really pop and be striking. We thought American comic books do that well, and we wanted to emulate that, Soeda said. Fatal Fury traditionally has an anime style to it. We felt that, for the modern audience, the blending of those two things would work well for the game. Now we have it, and it looks great.One of the newest additions to City of the Wolves gameplay is the Rev Gauge, a special meter tied in with new mechanics that allows for new attacks and movement techniques. The damage players can score off using Rev-boosted skills like powered-up Rev Arts special moves and Rev Accel to chain damaging attacks together is explosive. Still, the danger of using too much Rev and going into a fatigued Overheat state is also a concern.We want to give people the ability to use super moves, but not limit them to a single gauge, explains Konya. So, we have two different bars, making it a lot easier. Originally, there was no Rev Gaugejust a power gauge. The idea came from Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition, where you had a Heat gauge. We modernized and made it more flashy and easier to use.Coming home to SouthtownOne thing fans are eagerly anticipating is character reveals of both old favorites and new faces. One example is the recent re-introduction of longtime fan favorite character Mai Shiranui, sporting a new look. But even the new characters have ties to old favorites: the spunky young martial artist Preecha is a disciple of the original hero, Joe Higashi.Garou left us with a lot of homework, says Konya. What happened with Hotaru and her brother? Whats going on with Kain and Rock? We want to focus on telling those stories to completion and making sure that weve tied up all of those things. So we have a lot of work to do.SNK games also have a history of meshing gameplay and narrative together, with story events affecting characters skills and abilities that will continue in City of the Wolves.Its been 25 years since Garou was released, and theres a lot of people who are still playing that game now, notes Konya. But we consider the story very important. And if the story requires this person to lose powers, lose their arm, then so be it. Still, because this is a long-awaited game, we dont want to change it so much that it becomes alien to people looking forward to seeing these characters again. Its a balancing act.Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves will mark the series long-awaited return on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 on April 21 of next year. Fret not, fans of the Wolves. You wont be hungry for much longer.

When Liu Kang changed the timeline to what we know it to be in Mortal Kombat 1, he created a whole new universe of possibilities. In this New Era, some characters have been reimagined. Sektor first appeared in Mortal Kombat 3 as a cybernetic ninja, famous for punishing enemies with missile barrages and flamethrower attacks. In Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns which launches September 24 on PS5, Sektor emerges as a reinvented character with an arsenal of new abilities. Including a devastating new Brutality, which well be sharing for the first time here.Verify your age to view this content.Verify your age to view this content.Design-wise, we wanted to explore the idea that in this new timeline Sektor fights in a cyber suit as opposed to being completely robotic, a precursor to the origins of the Lin Kueis cybernetic initiative before they reached the level of fully converting humans into cyborgs. For Mortal Kombat 1, the goal was to convey strength and overwhelming firepower through her use of heavy weapons. Sektors power comes primarily through an exosuit that deploys her assortment of weapons but also enhances her hand-to-hand fighting ability using thrusters on her palms and feet. Despite Sektors new appearance, it remained imperative to design abilities that retain the DNA from the klassic version of the character, while simultaneously complementing her toolkit with new powers that highlight the technology of her new exosuit.To highlight these new attacks, we continually looked for opportunities to design Brutality moments that pair well with key special moves. Brutalities are prominent moments during gameplay where an opponent gets destroyed in a compelling, over-the-top way. The recipe for a good Brutality often lies in a combination of imagination while creating a visceral reaction with comedic elements. For us, Sektors Tug of War Brutality ticks each of those boxes. The attack is based on a move she had in Mortal Kombat 3 where a mechanical arm comes out and throws her opponent. In Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns, we wanted to pay homage to this by having the mechanic arm tear off the victims head and hold it up like a trophy. This then presented a unique opportunity in terms of how the opponents head could be best demolished in the most audacious way possible. After mulling it over, our design group decided on having her grind the head up as if it was jammed into a garbage disposal, with the liquefied remains ejecting outward from the flaps in her suit, which we think will elicit a reaction from players.Play VideoGameplay-wise, Sektor is an accessible space control character with good mid to long-range zoning potential. Additionally, she has excellent air mobility options primarily due to her use of air thrusters capable of propelling her in any direction, acting similarly to a double jump. One of Sektors new attacks is SkyDrop, where she blasts into the air using her thrusters and slams down over the opponent. For the enhanced version, Sektor crushes the opponent with an uppercut before slamming down and blasting them into the air for a juggle opportunity leading to potentially big combo damage. Moreover, Sektors new Blast Shield is a unique special move where she deploys a large shield while at the same time clamping her feet to the ground. While the shield is deployed, incoming projectiles can no longer push Sektor back, and successfully blocking projectile attacks charges up secondary weapons and gives her certain cancel options into special moves.Sektor has always been an enormous fan-favorite in the Mortal Kombat Universe, and now in Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns, her arsenal of devastating weaponry and abilities give her a target-rich environment among the cast of kombatants in the game. Astro Bot made his anticipated return to PS5 with last weeks release of the titular game. Team Asobi, the PlayStation Studio behind Astros Playroom, infused the little bots big new adventure with enough stages, power-ups, secrets, and fun to make any 3D platforming fan grin.With the games launch fresh in our minds, I visited Team Asobis studio to interview the development team about the studios history, development style, and tribute to 30 years of PlayStation. Lets delve right into it.Art & Animation: Everything begins with gameplay ideasLeft: Jamie Smith, Principal Animation Director, Team AsobiMiddle: Sebastian Brueckner, Principal Art Director, Team AsobiRight: Maki Murakami Senior Animator, Team AsobiPlayStation Blog: What do you prioritize the most when creating characters?Jamie Smith: I pay close attention to playfulness. When creating animations, we model how children express joy, like jumping up and down with excitement, to elicit jubilant feelings among players. Children are packed with actions and emotions, and we strive to imbue all these essences in our character designs.How do you decide which of these ideas make it into the game?Sebastian Brueckner: First and foremost, everyone must agree that these ideas will enhance the gameplay. We dont choose ideas solely from the art aspects, but everything begins with the gameplay ideas. As a team, we collectively envision a series of gameplay scenarios and make decisions on the world and its details. For instance, if the gameplay involves ice, we further collaborate on the idea and may suggest the sea as the world setting. Once the details are finalized, the art comes in to refine the world.Maki Murakami: This brainstorming process is particularly palpable in Astros new power-ups and enhancement designs. Handy-D is one example. The idea behind this long-armed monkey was to assist Astro in climbing. Then we explored the ideas on how we could make it cuter and agreed on the design for it to be carried on Astros back. We create prototypes, then playtest them and refine them together to take the level of fun to eleven.Tech & Programming: New features stem from the passion for delivering new experiencesLeft: Toshimasa Aoki, Sr Principal Product ManagerRight: Masayuki Yamada, Principal Gameplay Programming Lead, Team AsobiTell us about Team Asobis unique modeling techniques.Masayuki Yamada: Gameplay programmers start by creating primitive models based on the specifications provided by the designers and test the gameplay with them. Once we verify the models are indeed fun, the artists step in to elevate the experience. Our team process is different from others in the sense that we first define what makes the gameplay fun and then amplify that aspect of the game even further.As a hardware developer, how do you feel about the DualSense controller transforming into a character and featuring in the game as the Dual Speeder?Toshimasa Aoki: I was genuinely thrilled to see the controller I helped create featured in the game. Before Astro Bot, the controllers received a spotlight only in the Users Guide. But look at them now, flying around in the game as 3D characters, responding to every move and action. What better way to showcase the hardware than this?Team Asobis work is also a great platform to highlight new PlayStation technologies, like PlayStation VR and the DualSense controller. To deliver these new, unique features to players, is there anything your team focuses on?Toshimasa: We introduce new features because we want to create new experiences for our players. Our close collaboration with Team Asobi allows us to test prototypes early in their development. When we see smiles or hear chuckles from the team, its a sign that weve successfully created something new, and those reactions are a testament to the motivation in our work.A game packed with fun action and 30 years of PlayStation historyNicolas Doucet, Studio Head, Team AsobiWhat do you think is Team Asobis unique strength that sets the studio apart from others?Nicolas Doucet: Our strengths are ideas and speed. Innovation is a key aspect of Sonys DNA, and achieving innovation requires testing numerous ideas. Ideas and speed are inseparable when it comes to promptly identifying what works. And thats what Team Asobi excels in. Everyone on the team is always eager, inspired, and motivated to create something new.What kind of experiences do you want players to have when they play Astro Bot?Doucet: For veteran gamers, we hope to bring them the fun of platform action games and a sense of nostalgia, as the title is packed with tributes to PlayStations 30 years of history. With cameos like PaRappa, I hope players feel a wave of joy and nostalgia when encountering these familiar faces.I also feel a profound sense of responsibility towards novice players, especially very young gamers about to embark on their first gaming adventure. I vividly remember the first time I played a video game- it was incredibly fun and left a lasting impression on me. If Astro Bot is someones first video game and sparks the same joy and excitement that I felt, I would be personally delighted.What are some unique advantages that come with being part of PlayStation Studios? And how do you collaborate with other PlayStation Studios?Doucet: Since this title packs in much of PlayStation history, we worked closely with all the PlayStation Studios. When we shared our concept with the studio directors and game creators, their responses were overwhelmingly positive. Initially, I thought we could only feature around 50 characters out of the 150 characters we wanted to feature. But to our greatest surprise, the studios unanimously agreed to the cameo of all 150 characters. Apart from our PlayStation Studios, we were also lucky to collaborate with third-party publishers.What message do you have for the players who are waiting eagerly for the Astro Bots release?Doucet: Weve spent three years creating Astro Bot for both long-time PlayStation fans and new players, so please take your time and enjoy every nook and cranny of the game. Weve also hidden many secrets and surprises, so have fun exploring and discovering them all!

Can you believe its been 10 years since Destiny first launched on PS3 and PS4? 10 years since players first chose Hunter, Titan, or Warlock and jumped into Bungies expansive sci-fi world to build up their fledgling Guardian. I can still vividly remember my first time facing off against a daunting Fallen Walker in the Cosmodrome during the Destiny alpha all those years ago.To celebrate the series decade-long run, we asked developers from PlayStation Studios to share their fondest memories playing Destiny and their developer perspective on what makes the game so sticky and satisfying.Play VideoWith no further ado, happy 10th anniversary, Destiny!When Destiny first launched, and after I played for a bit, I actually reached out to my old high school friends who live in another town and convinced them to buy a PS4 and immediately join me. Ive always been impressed with Destinys cinematics and enemy animations. Each faction has always felt very distinct and unique from each other with varied personalities coming through their movement. Which of course made it all the more devastating when we lost the first one, and all the more elating when we found it again in the Pale Heart. Destiny has achieved an incredible symbiosis based on the dedication of not just the developers but also the players and community, which allows them to create this intense emotional connection.As a Narrative and Mission designer, the longevity of the story, the depth of the world-building, and the memorability of not just the main campaigns but the seasonal stories have left a profound impression on me that makes me wish I could experience it all over again and hope to emulate in the future of my career. I love fine-tuning my support builds to help my teammates, whether thats printing orbs on Arc Hunter, locking down the battlefield on Stasis Warlock, or creating safe havens on Void Titan. The jacket features a chalice and my gamer tag. I didnt have a clan, but that was worth trying LFG. At minimum Power, the difficulty got ridiculous. Most hits would put me one shot from death. Eventually, the group kicked me, and I went to bed dispirited and disappointed.The next day, I joined another LFG for one last shot an hour before reset. In the group were speedrunners from Fast whod set the world record two weeks later. I only realized when they flew across and skipped the whole jumping puzzle!At the final boss, random crystals spawned which required two players to melee them. I was so focused on surviving Id often miss the spawn, so I heard a constant chorus of Behind you! Hurry up! With ten minutes before reset, we wiped on an enrage [an attack thats unleashed if players take too long] just before we killed the boss. But we rallied and got the kill with only minutes left. In less than 24 hours, I had gone from the lowest to the highest point in my Destiny journey. Despite being originally designed for mobile in 2021, Fantasian is a full-scale JRPG with undeniable charm. I recently had the chance to dive into an early preview through the Ancient Hill area with Leo, Kina and Cheryl in my party. This segment included a few voiced cutscenes, a small area to explore, and a handful of fights, including an enigmatic special encounter and a classic boss battle. Heres what stood out.Whats new in this versionFantasian Neo Dimension brings several exciting upgrades with its release on PS5. The most noticeable is the stunning 4K resolution, which makes every detail of the meticulously crafted world pop with breathtaking clarity. Another welcome addition is the dual-language voice acting. Whether you prefer the authenticity of Japanese dialogue or the accessibility of English, Fantasian Neo Dimension offers a fully voiced experience that brings its cast to life. Finally, the addition of an easier difficulty option means those who are new to the genre will get an easier time going through the title despite its classic JRPG difficulty.One of the most intriguing new features is the ability to customize your soundtrack. For battles, players can choose between the original music composed for Fantasian which is obviously excellent considering its author or mix it up with iconic tracks from a selection of older Final Fantasy titles. You can choose a particular title, or use the random option to get a surprise soundtrack to play over each fight.A unique art directionThe art direction of Fantasian Neo Dimension is nothing short of extraordinary. The games world is built entirely from hand-crafted dioramas, which have been digitally recreated using drones equipped with 3D scanning technology. This meticulous process resulted in over 150 dioramas that form the games various environments, each one brimming with hand painted details.The dioramas are crafted with an unparalleled level of care, with contributions from notable artists, including Akira Toriyama, the mastermind behind Dragon Ball, and veterans from Japans Tokusatsu industry, known for their work on practical effects in films and television.Exploring these diorama-based environments feels like stepping into a work of art, with layers of textures and intricate details I wished I could simply reach through the screen and touch. The physical craftsmanship creates a visual experience that is entirely unique to the title.Merging legacy with innovationOne of the most remarkable aspects of Fantasian Neo Dimension is how it masterfully combines classic JRPG elements with some innovative gameplay mechanics. Fans of traditional JRPGs will find comfort in the familiar turn-based combat system, complete with elemental weaknesses and your classic spells. However, the game introduces a simple twist by allowing players to manually aim the trajectory of attacks and spells, enabling them to ricochet off multiple enemies. Some of these attacks will be your classic area-of-effect spell or single-target slash, but other attacks will pass through enemies and you can manually adjust the curve of the spell to hit specific enemies in its path. This added layer of strategy is super satisfying, particularly during large-scale battles.And to boot, larger scale battles are guaranteed by the Dimengeon system, a feature that addresses perhaps one of the most common criticisms of traditional JRPGs: the sometimes repetitive random encounters. Instead of regularly battling the same enemies in the overworld, Fantasian allows you to store these encounters in the Dimengeon, an alternate dimension where you can tackle them all at once. A couple caveats to this: any enemy you havent encountered yet will still trigger an instant battle, and you can only store a certain number of enemies before youll have to dip your toes in the Dimengeon and clear the queue.This system not only streamlines gameplay, allowing you some lovely uninterrupted exploration phases, but also allows for some excellent fights. When you enter the Dimengeon, youll find various bonuses scattered throughout letting you steal an enemys turn or buff your partys attacks. Picking these up by aiming your attacks through the bonuses turns these mass battles into thrilling, high-stakes encounters. I found this system particularly enjoyable, as it allowed for more creative approaches in combat. The sheer number of enemies in these Dimengeon battles which caps at 30 in a single fight gave me the opportunity to experiment with different spells and strategies, making each encounter fresh and exciting.Fantasian Neo Dimension is a beautifully crafted love letter to the JRPGs of old, enriched with modern enhancements that make it feel fresh and innovative. The combination of stunning handcrafted diorama environments, classic gameplay elements, and new mechanics like the Dimengeon system creates an experience that is both nostalgic and novel. As a fan of the genre, my time with Fantasian Neo Dimension definitely left me eager for the full release.

Authenticity and style are hallmarks of EA Sports FCs take on the beautiful game, and theres no denying that comes through in EA Sports FC 25, which is warming up for a September 27 launch (with early access from September 20 for those that pre-order the Ultimate Edition).I had a chance to examine the studs of this latest footballing signing with some time on its pristine new pitch, testing its new tactical options and the enticingly fresh Rush 5v5 experience.Play VideoPolish and improvements across the presentationThe gloss expected of EA Sports FC is fully present, with some tweaks made to the TV-style presentation, as well as the style of its matches. The referee and player point-of-view camera for replays and stoppages is used more, offering an up close and personal first-person perspective on goals. The player walkouts have returned to pre-match cutscenes, too, and there are nice little extra in-game details like increased animation on the players shirts.There are also some classic elements that have stayed. DualSense controller feedback is responsive enough to not feel overwhelming when reacting to fouls and shots, while its built-in speaker still captures referee whistles and the oh-so satisfying rustle of the ball hitting the net.Further to that, many clubs keep some of their highlight chants, whether its Manchester Citys Blue Moon, Im Forever Blowing Bubbles for West Ham (and yes, the actual bubbles floating around the pitch have returned, too) or Allez, Allez, Allez from the stands of Villa Park.Meanwhile, the emphasis on statistics is as impressive as always, with on-pitch overlays popping up to show details such as shots taken in and around the box, and who are the most fatigued players. As before, they remain informative and most importantly unobtrusive to the action.Play VideoThe gameplay and tactical flow feel goodOne of the big things EA is highlighting in EA Sports FC 25 is FC IQ, which tackles the tactical and moment-to-moment elements of the game. Player Roles give each footballer a wider array of on and off the ball behavior, with proficiencies dictating how they act when placed in different positions. In short, its even more important to understand a players strengths. So you might well have an outstanding goal poacher, but putting them in a false 9 position will only minimize their efficacy.Which means theres a greater emphasis on tactical diversity. Its even more important to ensure youre harmoniously crafting tactics which suit your players and their familiarity with the Role youve given them, handily indicated with a detailed breakdown of each, and a + indicating a proficiency and ++ indicating them being world class.So to stay on top of an ever changing match, tactical suggestions and pre-sets are now available to select during dead ball moments or pauses such as replays and celebrations. Players move around to their new positions in real time, with a zoomed-in chalkboard preview available to see how your teams shape is affected.Making quickfire manual or suggested substitutions and tactics in the game is extremely easy, with my changes feeling noticeable both from a visual and gameplay perspective, and even the match commentators noting significant tweaks to my team. EA Sports FC 25 requires less reliance on defensive AI, meaning midfield transitions are even more important and mistakes are more punishable.Play VideoA squad of game modes, and more options for womens footballTraditional game modes from Cup Finals to the match stipulation changing House Rules are all present, including the world dominating Ultimate Team and all-engrossing Player and Manager Career modes. The latter two are also now available for the womens teams too, with the WSL, NWSL, D1 Fminine, Liga F and Frauen-Bundesliga all playable, as well as the womens Champions League.Its an important and welcome addition to EA Sports FC, bringing valuable parity across all modes, with the level of detail afforded in the mens league managers, financial models, player likeness and more being given to the womens options.Running the Rush modeAnother big inclusion to EA Sports FC 25 is the 5v5 Rush experience, integrated across all core game modes, which I can see becoming a fan-favorite for those wanting a quick kickabout with a different level of pomp and flavor. Essentially professional five-a-side football with polished, neon green-hued presentation and even more energetic commentators, Rush is EA Sports FC, arcade style.In Kick off, you pick a squad from your favorite side, dropped onto a smaller pitch and go for goals. To reflect these changes to the norm, you will be presented to a completely different kick off experience where all players race to the ball when it is launched from the side of the pitch. There are no red cards, those being replaced by a blue card that leads to 1 min off pitch punishment to the player. And offsides are also different, instead of being called starting from the halfway line, they are called from the new attacking third line. Aside from that you still have access to all of your skills and techniques from 11 a side. However, the gameplay is so fast, compact and intense that pulling them off is trickier and thus more rewarding.Replays are kept to goals rather than highlights, and everything moves at a pace which is refreshingly brisk and engaging. Its reminiscent of playground attack, attack, attack football where you can go solo instead of passing it around your team, but wheres the fun in that? Not to mention that constructing snappy and successful team moves across the smaller pitch dimensions is even more gratifyingWith the option to play via Ultimate Team, Clubs, Kick Off and Career mode, the Rush experience could be an instant classic with some like-minded friends but either way theres even more in EA Sports FC 25s locker that youll be able to unleash on the pitch when it all kicks off later this month on September 27.
