Recently, theNew York Timeslooked into a "lack of imagination about what a closed prison site can be transformed into", highlighting the new Lorton Reformatory redevelopment in Fairfax County, Virginia, and others in Utah and New York which find new lives once again as "catalysts for communities." In July, we covered COOKFOXs adaptive reuse of the former Bayview Correctional Facility on the west side of Manhattan. Doug Farr's work on a project in Michigan City, Indiana, is also mentioned. Some of the more questionable points, however, include an espousal for the original character of the D.C.-area site, which was constructed in brick by the prisoners themselves using draconian methods during the 1910s.
