  • EpiPen gets a new competitor: FDA approves anaphylaxis nasal spray
    www.fastcompany.com
Good news for those who suffer from severe allergic reactions: a nasal spray containing epinephrine rather than a needle can now treat those frightening moments. The treatment, called Neffy, was approved on Friday after the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) denied its approval last year despite solid recommendations from the advisory committee. Neffy will become the first non-needle treatment for severe reactions, including anaphylaxis. For those who are needle-phobic, its a long-awaited improvement.Neffy comes from ARS Pharmaceuticals and is approved for use in adults and children weighing more than 66 pounds.Anaphylaxis is life-threatening, and some people, particularly children, may delay or avoid treatment due to fear of injections, Kelly Stone, associate director of FDAs division of pulmonology, allergy, and critical care, said in a statement. The availability of epinephrine nasal spray may reduce barriers to rapid treatment of anaphylaxis. As a result, Neffy provides an important treatment option and addresses an unmet need.Epinephrine has been the go-to treatment for severe allergic reactions since 1901. EpiPen, the pen that could quickly deliver the medication at home or on the go, was developed in the 1970s and was first used in the military. Neffys approval is the first significant development for epinephrine since.According to the FDAs announcement, Neffy is meant to be used as a single dose nasal spray administered into one nostril. Similar to injection products, a second dose (using a new nasal spray to administer neffy in the same nostril) may be given if there is no improvement in symptoms or symptoms worsen.Neffy does have some warnings, particularly for those who have nasal conditions or a history of nasal surgery. People with those issues should consult a healthcare provider before use. Side effects can include throat irritation, headaches, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, and more.EpiPen prices have soared in recent years, and generic brands have already been successful competitors, as theyre far more affordable. This new treatment option should help combat sky-high prices on drugs that treat allergic reactions, and anaphylaxis even more.ARS said it will use a copay savings program to limit the cost to $25 per prescription of two Neffy devices for those with insurance. For those without, it will offer a price of $199 for two doses of Neffy through the digital pharmacy BlinkRx.

  • Millins utilises "intense contrasts" for IM Pei museum renovation
    www.dezeen.com
Los Angeles studio Millins has updated the east wing of the Everson Museum of Art in New York state designed by architect IM Pei, introducing reflective and colourful materials to a below-grade space.Located in Syracuse and completed in 1968, the Everson Museum of Art (The Everson) consists of three storeys of interlocking concrete volumes organised around a central atrium and contains a collection of mostly American art and ceramics.Millins has updated the east wing of an IM Pei-designed museum in New YorkMillins was originally set to design the new Louise cafe for the museum, but the project expanded to encompass the entire east wing following discussions with the studio's co-founders, Zeina Koreitem and John May and museum director Elizabeth Dunbar. The East Wing is located in a slim rectangular volume affixed to one side of the building, and encompasses a below-grade space that is connected to a second-storey balcony through an atrium. The studio sought to bring more light into the space by introducing reflective materials"The designers were inspired by Peis Brutalist masterpiece, and specifically by the way in which Eversons massing produces intense contrasts of darkness and light," said the team. The cafe and a gallery wrap around the atrium on the second storey, while administrative spaces, an open space and a library sit on the lower level.Millins not only integrated more light into the entire wing but sought to disperse a mixture of programming throughout the space, which had originally been divided between public galleries and private space for the museum's staff.Colourful, translucent curtains divide the lower level"The East Wing has always had an ambiguous relationship with the rest of the museum," said the team. "The upper floor is publicly accessible, but the lower floor is only accessible to staff, despite the fact that they are both joined, visually and acoustically, by a double-height atrium called Mather Court.""The redesign turns the lower level into a semi-public space for events and exhibitions while creating a new research library and renovated staff offices."Custom tables by Millions and refurbished furnishings outfit a lower-level libraryTo offset the darkness of the subterranean lower level, the studio integrated colourful and reflective surfaces and materials throughout the entire wing."We wanted to create a contrast between the existing rough, desaturated textures and the inserted reflective, hyper-saturated textures," said the studio."We like to work with color as a kind of volumetric finish rather than a secondary or superficial layer."Read: MAWD revamps lobby and atrium of Denver tower designed by IM PeiThe studio created two "glass towers" between the concrete structure of Mather Court to achieve the effect. The towers display part of a collection of 4,000 ceramic objects donated by ceramics collector Louise Rosenfield, who gave the ceramics to the project with the note that they should used by the public, not just displayed."The design centers around a series of two-story glass towers that house the Rosenfield collection while bringing light into the space," said the team."The towers feature open shelving, which will allow caf visitors to reach in and pick out any ceramic object they want to eat or drink from a rare blurring of the lines between art and the public."Pastel-coloured furniture sits in the upper-level cafeOn the lower level, translucent, ombre curtains designed in collaboration with Paris-based artist Justin Morin and printed by 4 Spaces were installed as room dividers.Custom tables by Millins outfit the lower library, while the studio refurbished other original furniture pieces by a host of designers including Eero Saarinen and Charles and Ray Eames, which were specified by Pei.A chrome-clad wall lines the back wall of the cafeMillins also designed pastel-coloured tables for the small upstairs cafe, which were paired with light purple Olivares chairs by the director of Knoll Jonathan Olivares.A reflective, chrome wall lines the back wall of the cafe where visitors place orders and a matching chrome countertop divides the space. The project also included updating part of the exterior, including the installation of plantersThe project also included updates to the exterior of the building, where the team cleaned the facade "to reveal its pink tint", restored original pavers, and lined a wall with geometric pink planters designed by Millins."In the end, much of the new work quietly asserts itself, while also receding into the background, materializing daylight and transforming the entire east wing, but with only minimal alterations to Pei's original masterpiece," said the team.Millins is a Los Angeles architecture and design practice, founded by John May and Zeina Koreitem in 2012. The studio works across a variety of scales, including buildings, furniture and books.IM Pei projects have been receiving updates across North America, including a tower in Montreal and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland. The photography is by Iwan BaanProject credits:Donor/collector: Louise Rosenfield, Dallas, TXPresident & CEO Everson Museum of Arts: Elizabeth DunbarRosenfield collection curator: Garth JohnsonCurtains: Collaboration with Justin MorinFabric and printing: 4Spaces, ZurichCaf chairs: Knoll Olivares chairs by Jonathan OlivaresCommunal Caf tables: Designed by Millns (Fabrication in Los Angeles by CaliforniaCarts)Research library and offices furniture: Originals by Saarinen, Knoll, Breuer and Eames,spec-ed by IM PEI reupholstered and refurbished by MillnsReconfigurable Library tables: Designed by Millns (Fabrication in Los Angeles byCalifornia Carts)Prismatic towers fabrication: Custom FRANK Showcase system, GermanyPrismatic towers structure: TriPyramid structuresCafe metal fabrication: Kammetal Inc.Lighting design: Derek PorterThe post Millins utilises "intense contrasts" for IM Pei museum renovation appeared first on Dezeen.

  • This Cleverly-Designed Tiny Home For Two Is Compact, Comfortable & Functional
    www.yankodesign.com
Designed by Rocky Mountain Tiny Homes, the Bandelier tiny home features a decent length of 28 feet. The home is quite cleverly created, and is equipped with a comfy interior for two people, plus some guests. The home has a well-proportioned and designed living area, as well as a bathtub. The Bandelier is a bit different compared to the other builds by Rocky Mountain Tiny Houses, and this is because the shell and exterior were already constructed. The firm only made a few small changes, and finished the interior.Designer: Rocky Mountain Tiny HomesYou can access the interior via the front door, and it leads you to the living room which is equipped with shelving, a sofa bed for guests, as well as a compact wood-burning stove. This section then leads to the kitchen which is pretty well-sized for a tiny home. It is furnished with quartz counters, seating area, an oven, and a propane-powered stove. It also includes a microwave, full-size fridge/freezer, and sink. The kitchen and bathroom are connected via a sliding door. The bathroom includes a vanity sink, flushing toilet, as well as a full-size bathtub/shower, which isnt really found in tiny homes. There is some storage space as well. However, the Bandelier only contains a single bedroom, which can be accessed via a storage-integrated staircase. The bedroom is a typical tiny house-style loft with a low ceiling, as well as a double bed, storage, and some generous glazing. The Bandelier tiny home was constructed for wildland firefighters, and it is located near the Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico. We are unsure of the price but homes by Rocky Mountain Tiny Houses usually cost around US$100,000 when built from scratch. The post This Cleverly-Designed Tiny Home For Two Is Compact, Comfortable & Functional first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • Pixar Announces Incredibles 3 At D23
    www.gamespot.com
This year marks the 20th anniversary of The Incredibles, director Brad Bird's ode to the Fantastic Four, James Bond, and more. In the two decades since then, only a single sequel--2018's Incredibles 2--has arrived. But at D23, Pixar confirmed that Incredibles 3 is in development, with Bird slated to direct as he has for the first two films.Pixar's Pete Docter made the announcement at the very end of the studio's presentation, and he didn't offer any other details. Docter didn't even say if the film has a release date, but it was clearly well-received news at the show.Incredible 3 coming soon! #D23 pic.twitter.com/4ZaqQhCjGZ Deadline Hollywood (@DEADLINE) August 10, 2024 It took 14 years for Bird to get around to making the second movie, so he's never been in a rush to complete a trilogy. There is also the question of whether Incredibles 3 will be Bird's next film. In 2022, Bird signed a deal with Skydance to direct Ray Gunn, an animated sci-fi movie he wrote over three decades ago. That movie is one of Bird's passion projects, so it seems likely to go first unless Skydance decides not to go forward with it.Continue Reading at GameSpot
