Palestinian game developer concludes crowdfund almost $50,000 over goalThe team attempted to raise funding and grants but has "consistently rejected"Image credit: Rasheed Abueideh News by Vikki Blake Contributor Published on Jan. 15, 2025 Palestinian game developer Rasheed Abueideh has concluded his crowdfund for a pseudo-3D stealth adventure inspired by a historical Palestinian folk tale almost $50,000 over the original funding goal.Abueideh took the crowdfund for Dreams on a Pillow to Launch Good after "facing a decade of rejection and avoidance from funding partners and publishers who deemed supporting a Palestinian 'too risky' or 'controversial'.""The team has attempted to raise publisher funding and cultural grants for the project, but has consistently been rejected," the Crowdfund page explains."A single publisher responded positively to funding inquiries, one that has experiences in games with sensitive topics - but sadly, even for them, the risk of a Palestinian story was too large."Dreams on a Pillow originally set out to raise around $195,000 but closed at just over $244,000, although Abueideh acknowledged that to realise the final project, he will need to secure around $495,000 to "pay for salaries, outsourcing, and asset creation." However, the money raised from the crowdfund can "move the game from pre-production into a production state."Abueideh thanked the 3336 supporters who funded his project on BlueSky,saying it will "make history in the games industry."

How Far Is AI Capable of Delivering on Its Promises and Changing Our Civilization? 0 like January 15, 2025Share this postAuthor(s): Jesus L. Lobo Originally published on Towards AI. Platos Allegory of the Cave as a parallel to the possibility of a real transformative AI. Source: Image by the author and used in [1].This is one of the questions that comes to mind whenever we read about the latest advances and promises of Artificial Intelligence (AI). The bombardment of information on the progress of AI is continuous and comes from many fronts with different objectives; either they convey excessive optimism (e.g. super-intelligent, conscious AI, etc.) or on the contrary they draw dystopian scenarios (e.g. AIs that are going to exterminate humanity). In either case, many times with opinions or information far from reality, and with a confused objective, which causes us to have often a wrong idea of AI and its real transformative potential.Shedding light and clarity on this issue is the aim of this post based on the scientific article titled: Can transformative AI shape a new age for our civilization?: Navigating between speculation and reality [1].From science fiction to reality: how far?AI and its capabilities have been the subject of speculation and confined to science fiction since its inception. Today, we can say with certainty that it has become a mature discipline, evolving into one of the most potentially transformative forces for our civilization. In recent decades, the evolution of AI has moved from theoretical speculation to tangible achievements. More recent systems based on foundational models, and in particular those based on generative AI, are demonstrating more than remarkable capabilities, outperforming human performance in specific areas such as strategic games, natural language processing, and image recognition, among others. However, the impact of AI on our civilization goes beyond its technical and algorithmic achievements. Its integration into critical societal functions, from healthcare to governance, can be a double-edged sword. On the one hand, AI promises to solve complex problems such as climate modeling, personalized medicine, and economic optimization. On the other hand, it raises concerns about surveillance, labor displacement, algorithmic biases, or jeopardizing democratic values, for example. This highlights the urgency of establishing sound ethical frameworks and governance structures for AI. We stand on the brink of a potential civilization-level leap; although this leap may already have taken its first steps, its impact on our society remains uncertain. Whether it will lead to unprecedented prosperity, a catastrophic outcome, or another bubble that will burst, will depend not only on technological advances but also on how our civilization chooses to harness and regulate this powerful tool of unparalleled transformative potential. Is AI just another disruptive technology? The idea of a transformative breakthrough is not new. History leaves examples of innovations that have catalyzed epochal change, such as the invention of the steam engine during the Industrial Revolution or the rise of the Internet in the Information Age. Since its inception, the field of AI has gone through multiple cycles of optimism and stagnation, commonly known as AI summers and AI winters. These phases of heightened research enthusiasm and investment have alternated with periods of disillusionment and decreased funding, as initial technological promises fell short.A historical overview of AI cycles that highlights the potential for it to become a genuinely transformative milestone shortly. Source: Image by the author and used in [1].However, what distinguishes AI from earlier advances is its potential to serve as a general-purpose technology, with capabilities that span nearly every domain of human activity. As research progresses, discussions are increasingly focused on whether AI may represent not only a significant technological advance but a crucial change in civilization itself. While the excitement around AI is palpable, so too are the ethical, social, and existential challenges that it poses. The utilization of certain technological advancements has propelled our civilization forward, along with the uncertainty surrounding the role of AI and Transformative AI (TAI) in this trajectory. Source: Image by the author and used in [1].The AI Ethics role and its challengesTo assess whether AI truly represents a turning point for our civilization, we must raise our perspective, otherwise we run the risk of treating it as just another technology, losing the vision that current circumstances demand. In this vision, Ethics must be a capital tool, an integral part of the design and implementation of AI from the beginning, and not an afterthought. How Ethics perceives AI is crucial to its development as a truly transformative technology and its subsequent integration into our civilization. This perception affects not only its adoption and regulation but also the development of applications in key areas in almost every human facet. It also helps to understand the impact and consequences of our actions and decisions, as well as our interests, moral values, and the future of our civilization. In a changing world certain aspects of our humanity, our essences, must remain constant as AI transforms everything around us. And to know which aspects to maintain and how, we must use Ethics as a tool to help us weigh change. We need an AI aligned with our values, not driven solely by economic interests. It would be a shame to have at our fingertips a multipurpose tool with the potential to overcome some of our civilizations most pressing challenges, only to be left with its ability to make money. But the application of Ethics to AI is not without its challenges. First, the diversity of ethical approaches can lead to conflicts when trying to establish a unified ethical framework, as different approaches may suggest different and even contradictory actions in the same situation. Moreover, Ethics is not universal and can vary significantly according to cultural and social context; what is considered ethical in one culture may not be ethical in another. This variability complicates the creation and implementation of global ethical standards, as these cultural and social differences need to be considered and respected. The existing conflicts and principles of some of the main ethical perspectives in AI. Source: Image by the author and used in [1].This is where we find the European AI Act as an effort to reconcile the different ethical perspectives in its regulatory framework. It is the first comprehensive regulation of AI by a major regulator and can be seen as the formalization of a social contract between governments, developers, companies, and the general public.Transformative AI but in what form?Despite great advances occurring practically every month, AI is still largely dependent on humans, lacking full autonomy and human capabilities such as complex reasoning to fully understand its actions or perceive its environment holistically. Achieving the quintessence of AI, either in the form of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) or a conscious entity or similar, is the race that the big tech companies and all-powerful labs have been presenting to us for some time now. And this is what is being sold in the short or medium term, but we think that it will have to wait, or be discarded in part as the capabilities of this type of AI are conceived; for now closer to fiction than to science. If anything, some decaffeinated version will be sold to us as a definitive achievement, such as the goal set by the company OpenAI: highly autonomous systems that outperform humans in the most economically costly jobs; although this would undoubtedly constitute a major advance. There is no consensus on the definition and scope of this quintessence today, so we will be at the mercy of what they want to sell us. Furthermore, we may not need this quintessence to have an AI that will transform our civilization. An airplane does not fly like a bird does, a submarine does not swim or dive like a sperm whale can, yet both of these advances have been milestones despite their differences with biology. The question of whether machines can think is about as relevant as the question of whether submarines can swim. Edsger W. DijkstraSo, the debate about a truly transformative AI may not focus on whether it can think or be conscious like a human, but on its ability to perform complex, cross-domain (general purpose) tasks autonomously and efficiently. It is important to recognize that the value and usefulness of machines do not depend on their ability to exactly replicate human thinking and cognitive abilities but on their ability to achieve similar or better results using different methods. Although the human brain has inspired much of the development of contemporary AI (e.g., neural networks), it does not need to be the definitive model for the design of a superior AI. Perhaps, by freeing AI development from strict neural emulation, researchers can explore novel architectures and approaches that optimize different goals, constraints, and capabilities, potentially overcoming the limitations of human cognition in certain contexts. This conceptual flexibility highlights the potential of AI as an innovation that would not be constrained by biology but would be nurtured by it.Challenges on the road to a transformative AIThere are many challenges ahead to think about this transformative AI in the short term. Considering some human factors that could be a stumbling block in this path towards a transformative AI, we can find: the information overload we receive, the possible misalignment with our human values, the negative perception we may be acquiring, the view of AI as our competitor, the over-reliance on human expertise, the possible perceived futility of Ethics in AI, the loss of trust, over-regulation, diluted efforts in research and application, the idea of human obsolescence, or the possibility of an AI-cracy, for example. However, this also implies that scientific-technological factors may appear as barriers that we must overcome before reaching a truly transformative AI, such as the data paradox, the difficulty in recognizing the emergence of new capabilities in AI, the modeling of the world (World Modeling), the challenges in sustainability and the physical limitations, or the lack of consensus in the theoretical foundations of computation on the possibility of having a human-level AI, among other factors. The green shootsHowever, there are indeed some green shoots that make us think that it could become possible; and probably not looking at them individually, but through an intersection between many of them, as if it were a call effect, feeding back on each other. From the scientific-technological point of view, we have multi-agent autonomous systems, advances in neuro-computing, interactive AI, advances in specialized hardware, highly sophisticated virtual environments, causal modeling, Open-World learning approaches, self-improving and self-learning techniques, and quantum computing, among others. From a non-scientific-technological point of view, we could talk about the integration of interdisciplinary approaches, advances in global collaboration, significant investments in AI, or the emergence of new approaches for data generation and processing (learning). But what really brings to mind a civilization-wide transformation through AI is a possible scientific explosion, or as Dario Amodei (CEO and co-founder of Anthropic) recently put it, the compressed 21st century. AI is beginning to play an increasingly broad role in science [2], spanning numerous fields and acting both as a catalyst for scientific breakthroughs and as an essential tool in the research process (e.g. AlphaFold, LucaProt, the AI Scientists [3], etc.). This development could usher in a new era characterized by accelerated discoveries, driving progress at the frontiers of knowledge and achieving results that overcome the limitations of current methodologies. Such acceleration has the potential to address crucial societal challenges, such as climate change, public health, and the green and digital transitions, among others.Would we need a new ethical and philosophical perspective? Finally, we would like to bring the focus to an aspect that we consider relevant: what would happen after such an AI is achieved? Profound changes could arise in the ethical and philosophical frameworks that guide our interaction with this disruptive technology, maybe requiring new forms of philosophical thinking. This fact could challenge current conceptions of consciousness and identity. For example, functionalist theories suggest that consciousness could be defined by processes, not by the biological substrate, which would imply reinterpreting Cartesian dualism and expanding the concept of personhood to non-biological entities based on their rationality and self-awareness. From an ethical point of view, it would be questioned whether AI could become a moral agent. According to the Theory of Responsibility, those with power have moral obligations to the life forms they impact. Thus, an AI with transformative power could assume responsibilities toward humans and its own existence. More extreme and futuristic positions, such as the transhumanist movement led by Nick Bostrom, see AI as a logical stage in human evolution, warning of existential risks if not aligned with human values. Authors such as philosopher Yuval Noah Harari suggest that a religion of artificial intelligence could emerge, which would attribute an almost divine status to these entities, redefining current religious and philosophical systems. In this context, a meta-philosophy or meta-religion could emerge to reconcile humanity with synthetic intelligences, transforming our notions of purpose and morality.ConcludingWe would like to conclude by emphasizing the relevance of taking a long-term view in the development and application of AI. Rather than focusing solely on immediate achievements, we should propose a strategic approach that ensures that AI systems are designed and used for the benefit of everybody and global advancement as a civilization. Achieving this goal requires balancing technical progress with a strong ethical commitment, and fostering education that empowers future generations to interact critically and effectively with these technologies.Let us start taking real control on Artificial Intelligence, as it seems we still have time. • G.I. Joe: Battle for the Arctic Circle Board Game Review
    www.ign.com
For children of the '80s, few rivalries are as nostalgic as the one between G.I. Joe and Cobra, with their high-tech vehicles, creative codenames, and the red and blue lasers their weapons shot. For longtime board game players, the Axis & Allies series of war board games may hold a similar nostalgia with its large amounts of miniatures, its emphasis on strategy, and tense dice rolls, all set among the height of World War II. Now under the care of Renegade Game Studios, Axis & Allies are letting players experience the confrontations between the Joes and Cobra in the new G.I. Joe: Battle for the Arctic (minus the colorful lasers, unfortunately).G.I. Joe: Battle for The Arctic CircleSee it at AmazonMSRP: $60 USDPlayers: 2-4 (Best with 2 or 4 players)Play Time: 90 minAges: 14+Get it at AmazonBattle for the Arctic Circle puts up to four players in the boots of either G.I. Joe (playing as Keelhaul and Snow Job) or Cobra (as Destro and Cobra Commander) in a battle to control the North Pole, as both sides vie for control of points around the map and establish their hold on the Arctic Circle. From the moment you open the box, its clear that the goal of this game is to give the younger and more inexperienced audience a fun and interesting on-ramp to the wider world of Axis & Allies offerings, and I think the team at Renegade Game Studios succeeds.Battle for the Arctic Circle is a far less imposing beast for new players to tackle.Popping off the box lid, I was greeted with the familiar small plastic miniatures and the other usual accouterments of an A&A title, just with a G.I. Joe flair. For fans who have played previous versions of Axis & Allies, you will feel right at home here. Turns are still broken up the same way you buy new units at the beginning of your turn, have your separate combat move and non-combat move phases, and battles with their attacker vs. defender rolls are all still here but everything is just a bit more condensed. The number of miniatures is rather small, meaning players wont need to contend with managing massive armies around the map or rolling for giant battles. With a smaller map, you wont be earning large amounts of Reinforcement Points (Arctic Circles equivalent of IPCs in other A&A games) to buy more units, and along with other subtle tweaks, Battle for the Arctic Circle is a far less imposing beast for new players to tackle. That said, this game does have some entirely unique mechanics and tweaks that also set it apart, some of which I enjoyed more than others.Whats in the Box:Rulebook | 1 Game Board | 1 Weather Dominator Token | 8 Ice Hex Tokens | 15 Cobra Faction Control Tokens | 1 Round Tracker Token | 15 GI Joe Faction Control Tokens | 2 Player Aids | 4 Oversized Leader Boards | 20 G.I. JOE Trooper Minis | 20 Snow Serpent Trooper Minis | 12 Snow Cat Vehicle Minis | 12 W.O.L.F Vehicle Minis | 10 Skystriker Aircraft Minis | 10 Rattler Aircraft Minis | 8 Aircraft Carrier Minis | 10 Cruiser Ship Minis | 8 D6 Dice | 48 Plastic Poker ChipsIn a first for the A&A series, Battle for the Arctic Circle abandons the real-world geographical boundaries separating areas and uses hexes, a decision that works out really well. I appreciate the real-world borders in the previous games from an immersion sense, but they are also one of the biggest issues I have with the other editions, where everything can just start feeling cramped an issue I was happy to say I didn't encounter here. While this is also due in part to having fewer units to contend with overall, there is no denying that the larger, uniform hex spaces played a role too. I wouldn't complain if Renegade adopts this method in future games as well (something more likely to happen in future spin-off games like Battle for the Arctic Circle than mainline games, to be fair).Another new addition unique to this G.I. Joe variant of A&A comes in the form of the diabolic Weather Dominator device that the Cobra forces have access to on their turns. This dastardly piece of machinery, for the cost of a single RP, can turn a single non-land-only hex into an ice-covered tile that can be traversed by land units. This is a neat feature, and it proves to be incredibly important to use as Cobra to try to quickly capture nearby victory point tiles. Cobra starts with a significantly lower amount of RP to spend each turn, so using the Dominator to score some early points is a must. I really like the concept of it as well; a weather-controlling device being used by the bad guys is a quintessential 80s cartoon story trope, and Im here for it. To keep things fair, the Joes can use their cruiser ships to try and break up the ice, which can lead to some rather unfortunate situations where Cobra units are stranded in enemy territory without backup.Perhaps the biggest change are the unique commander powers that each player gets. While there are fewer armies to take command of in this game (only four as opposed to the more common five or six armies in the mainline A&A games), each commander has a special ability that can be triggered if the correct conditions are met. Once a turn after damage is assigned, for example, Cobra Commander can sacrifice his own units to deal additional hits to the enemy (yes, Cobra Commander has kamikaze units). Snow Job's commander power grants their land units an additional space of movement during their non-combat movement phase. In principle, I enjoy these unique powers, but I also found them not to all be created equally, with the Joes' powers being far more usable than Cobras especially Destros. In Destros case, he gains a bonus whenever he attacks a Joe-controlled tile that contains six or more units, a scenario I perhaps encountered only once or twice during all my plays of the game. Had the ability applied when he was defending as well, it would be far more reliable or impactful. However, considering Destro has to attack to gain the bonus, it made the ability rarely used, which made playing as Destro less exciting than the others. I like the idea of the commanders having special abilities, adding a slight asymmetrical component, but the balancing of the skills currently on offer felt lacking. I wish that each side had additional commanders to choose from, with teams being able to pick only two to use. Regardlessy, the whole thing is a neat idea and a fun mix-up within the A&A system that I would like to see carried over into future spin-off titles.Where to Buy

  • Wolf Man Review: Leigh Whannell Transforms Universal Monster Into Family Drama
    www.denofgeek.com
Wolf Man begins with a father and son on a hunting trip in which the latter decides to share with his boy some advice about the way of the world. Dying isnt hard. Its the easiest thing in the world, the dad (Ben Prendergast) warns his son Blake (Zac Chandler). At every minute its closing up behind you. Given the intense warning, and the cold distance in papas eyes, its no surprise that when we again meet the adult Blake (Christopher Abbott) 30 years later, hes living not in the Oregon wilderness of his father, but in San Fransisco. Nor is it a surprise that the otherwise kindly Blake gets way too intense about warning his daughter Ginger (Matilda Firth) to be safe. That early juxtaposition seems to signal Leigh Whannells intentions for the Blumhouse update of Wolf Man. Weve been trained by modern horror movies to read every tooth and claw as allegory for some social ill, to expect scary movies to lecture us about trauma with each slashers attack. While Whannell elegantly married scares and substance into his reimagining of The Invisible Man, he doesnt overburden Wolf Man with thematic concerns. Outside of an occasional clunker line about daddies accidentally scarring their kids when trying to protect them from scars, Wolf Man doesnt devote undue time to its ideas about parents passing their trauma onto kids.In fact, Wolf Man eschews most expectations viewers bring to it. Wolf Man follows Blake as he takes his wife Charlotte (Julia Garner) to his late fathers home. Hes there in equal measures to work through his feelings about his estranged dad and to repair his strained marriage. No sooner do they arrive outside the wooded homestead, however, than the family is attacked by a beast that seems to walk on two legs. The attack leaves Blake wounded and acting strangely toward his wife and daughter. From that description, you might think you know what Wolf Man is, especially if youve seen other werewolf movies and Whannells previous directorial outings, Upgrade and The Invisible Man. You expect Blake to turn into a werewolf and terrorize Charlotte and Ginger, with Whannell depicting the conflict with the visceral imagery and flashy camera moves he used earlier. Those things do happen in Wolf Man, but not at all in the way viewers expect. Whannell keeps his camera largely still until the end of the first act, the first bit of bravado occurring when the family tries to escape their moving truck, overturned by the creatures attack. And yes, Wolf Man has an impressive transformation sequence, the highlight of every werewolf movie going back to the overlapping dissolves on Lon Chaney Jr.s face in 1941s The Wolf Man.Instead of a single sequence, the transformation happens slowly in Wolf Man with Blake changing a little bit at a time over the films second act. Make no mistake, the practical effects impress just as much as the great Jack Pierce makeup in 1941 or Rick Bakers work in 1981s An American Werewolf in London. But Wolf Man takes the time to keep focused on the loss of the man instead of just celebrating the coming of the wolf.Abbott uses his natural puppy-dog eyes to convey Blakes loss of self as his body changes, his sharp teeth and extended jaw robbing him of the ability to speak. Whannells most impressive camera moves come when he swings it around from Charlotte, talking to her husband in recognizable English, to Blake, hearing her voice as muffled gibberish but seeing her with heightened lights and colors. As these moves suggest, the horror of Wolf Man comes first in the loss of communication and connection within a family unit. The opening scenes establish Blake as a caring father, a man desperate to avoid the mistakes of his own dad, and he and Charlotte as both sad about the spark theyve lost. The family wants to come together and find new ways of connecting, and Blakes transformation steals forever that possibility. For some viewers, the emphasis on tragedy will disappoint. Although Whannell proves as adept as ever with blocking and composition, tension comes second to character work. And while Whannell got his start as a writer, co-creating the Saw and Insidious universes with fellow Aussie James Wan, dialogue was never his strong suit. Not even an assist from co-writer Corbett Tuck can prevent Whannell from having the characters occasionally declare their feelings or the movies themes, as when Charlotte just looks at the camera and says she has trouble connecting with her daughter. For that reason, stripping Blake of his speech abilities helps the movie overall, as it gives Abbott, Garner, and Firth space to communicate through facial expressions and body language. Blake looks increasingly helpless the more lupine he becomes while Garner lets Charlotte slump in defeat and desperation, even as she needs to be strong for her daughter. Moreover, the focus on family drama grounds Wolf Man in the classic Universal tradition. Most of the great Universal Monsters were tragic heroes, romantic figures who lamented the way their otherness separated them from society. The horror came less from, say, Frankensteins Monster lumbering toward a townsperson than from the way they would shriek in fright, forcing him into the threat they feared.Join our mailing listGet the best of Den of Geek delivered right to your inbox!Blake follows in the footsteps of those greats, which creates an interesting dynamic for the chase sequences that make of the movies third act and underscore the central theme without having to shout it. We understand that Blake may prove his father correct. He taught his family that the world is fundamentally dangerous, a terrifying thought that echoes far longer than even the most bone-chilling howl.Wolf Man opens in theaters on Friday, Jan. 17. • Who should and shouldnt buy a new MacBook Air right now
    9to5mac.com
Friends dont let friends buy a new MacBook Air right before a newer MacBook Air comes out, right? Thats mostly true, but two exceptions. There are currently two very good MacBook Air models that you can purchase brand new that are both incredible values.M1 or higherFirst is the oldest MacBook Air thats still sold. That would be the M1 MacBook Air that currently goes for $649 (regular $699) from Walmart. If youre buying a MacBook Air thats older than this model, then make sure it costs well below $649. Thats because it still uses an Intel chip and not Apple silicon, meaning performance and features just wont be the same. While its far from state-of-the-art, the M1 MacBook Air exclusively sold through Walmart is your most affordable ticket to an Apple laptop.M2 if base modelIf budget allows, however, the M2 MacBook Air is worth careful consideration at its current sales price of $799 (regular $999). This model features the current MacBook Air design with MagSafe charging, the blackish-blue Midnight color option, and most importantly, double the RAM. Thats thanks to Apple doubling the base RAM from 8GB to 16GB last fall, likely to support future Apple Intelligence features more easily. For this reason, we love Apple Intelligence. While Apple will sell you an M2 MacBook Air for $999, we only recommend buying at this point if you can take advantage of a $200 off discount.M3? Wait for M4Everyone else should wait for these reasons:If you care about the performance difference between M2 and M3, you should wait for the M4. We already know what kind of performance it provides since the M4 has been out for a while now.If you want to increase your storage or RAM from the base 256GB and 16GB, you should wait. Youre already paying Apple upgrade prices so budget isnt a big factor. Hold out for the M4 configurations. If you want a 15-inch MacBook Air, definitely wait. Apple only sells the 15-inch MacBook Air with the M3 chip, and Apple doesnt discount its products just because new hardware is about to replace it. So there you have it. On a budget? Dont wait to upgrade. The deals today are as compelling as ever. Want the latest and greatest, upgraded specs, or a bigger screen? Hold out for the M4 MacBook Air. Its just around the corner.Best MacBook Air accessoriesApple 35W Dual Port USB Power Adapter for recharging your MacBook Air and your iPhone, iPad, or AirPods at the same time.An inexpensive MacBook Air sleeve for keeping the scratches on the shiny aluminum finish between uses.Or a transparent snap-on case that stays on without making your MacBook Air thick and heavy.Want to keep your keyboard looking pristine? Using a keyboard cover will prevent your keys from turning shiny after a few months of usage.Add 9to5Mac to your Google News feed. FTC: We use income earning auto affiliate links. • Horrendous New Startup Uses AI Agents to Flood Reddit With Posts Shilling Clients' Products
    futurism.com
Oh no.Slop Goes the WeaselReddit is poised to be overrun with infinite AI-powered marketing campaigns, if one enterprising techEnter Astral, billed as a "24/7 AI startup that works to grow your startups" by relentlessly shilling any brand. In a brief demonstration on X-formerly-Twitter and spotted by Gizmodo, Astral founder Savannah Feder showcases the speed with which Astral can mercilessly spam Reddit threads with targeted ad copy designed to read like posts by actual people complete with a fake disclosure, to keep things ethical."Been using Probe lately to run automated interviews with users (disclosure: currently working with them)," the software spits out in reply to a post asking how to get better at taking customer feedback. "It's actually helped me be more objective since the AI handles the conversations and summarizes patterns."Startups on StartupsFeder went out of her way to design Astral as an AI agent in order to get around Reddit's API restrictions, which are specifically designed to ward off the kind of spam the founder hopes to build her tech dynasty on. This is Astral's primary use case not accessibility or simplifying tedious tasks, but unlocking another way to hawk products. Because we didn't have enough of those, clearly. For many, simply plopping "reddit" at the end of a search query has been the only surefire way to cut through the AI-generated slop Google increasingly shoves down our throats. Thanks to Astral and other "computer use" AI agents like it, that temporary oasis will soon be clearcut by opportunistic AI spam purveyers ad infinitum until the bubble bursts, and maybe long afterward as well, since the worst uses of AI also seem to be the cheapest. While the spammy enterprise might just be the latest footnote in the startup churn, it's nonetheless another sign that the old internet is being stripped for its parts which might be agreeable, as long as your vision of utopia is a LinkedIn feed that never ends.Share This Article
