Godot Engine’s Terrain3D Received Dynamic Collision Mode

Launched by Cory Petkovsek in 2023, Terrain3D is a Godot Engine extension designed to set up landscapes in official engine builds with GDScript, C#, and any language supported by Godot. It recently got a major update, bringing in several highly anticipated features, such as paintable foliage instancing, scale and rotation, and more.

The latest addition to Terrain3D is Dynamic Collision mode, which generates collision only around the camera, allowing for adjustable block size and range. For terrains larger than 8K, it dramatically saves memory and cuts down load times. On top of that, it can be updated at over 60 FPS, enabling real-time terrain modification with live collision updates.

Check out the documentation for details and get the extension here. If you’re ready to dive into Terrain3D, Cory has two video tutorials that cover the basics, including installation, setting up textures, importing, sculpting, and other basic operations. The second tutorial is focused on advanced usage like blended texturing, auto shading, holes, navigation, and more.
