Metaphor: ReFantazio Director on Games That Pique His Interest

ATLUS

Metaphor: ReFantazio, ATLUS’ latest RPG with a fantasy setting, has been launched and received universal acclaim, with some players naming it the best work of ATLUS so far. Director Katsura Hashino, who has been with ATLUS for around 30 years and led the development of several Persona games, does have a unique take on what games he favors and what he doesn’t.

In an interview with IGN, he shared about what games are attractive and exciting for him, mentioning those “highly polished games” that “look like they were designed by a bunch of people in a CEO boardroom” won’t make him excited at all. Then, what kind of games did he get motivation and inspiration from?  He further stated:

“When I see these sorts of games [which reveal a little about the people that made them], it really fills me with the motivation to keep developing. That these artists, these creatives, had something they really wanted to say is where I get all of my inspiration from, and the drive to continue to be creative myself.”

It’s interesting that he pointed out that the thing that matters is those who create the game. The director said that, even for a project that is incomplete, probably still raw or unfinished, he is eager to have a glimpse of  “the humanity behind it” as well as “the emotion that inspired it [the game].”

Earlier, Katsura Hashino talked about how the team of Metaphor: ReFantazio presented fan-loved UI panels that are not only functional but also fancy. He frankly described the process as “really annoying.”
