Dragon Age: The Veilguard Could Have Brought Origins’ Hero of Ferelden with Terrifying Changes

BioWare

In my secret review of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, which might never see the light of day, I mention how many familiar faces we get to see in the game, despite its developers once saying there wouldn’t be too many nostalgic parallels. We meet the Inquisitor, and I’m sure fans would love to get at least a glimpse of Hawke and the Hero of Ferelden, but alas. However, BioWare was entertaining the thought back in the day, according to its art lead Matt Rhodes.

In one of his posts, Rhodes shared a concept of the Hero from Origins appearing disfigured from the Blight and The Calling, holding a note saying, “Do not let her see me like this,” referring to Morrigan, I’d assume, as it’s the only “her” I can think of that has met them before the transformation.

“Nobody else seemed to like the ‘leper king’ direction, but I thought it’d be cool,” Rhodes said. “The Hero of Ferelden has been putting off ‘The Calling’. The Blight takes more each year, but there’s still too much to do on the surface.”

The image and thought itself are devastating. BioWare is not always easy on its characters, letting their love interests leave them to do their own thing at the end of every Dragon Age game (which might be realistic, but I’m not here for realism, damn it!) – and the Hero of Ferelden had it the hardest: you basically kill them if you don’t agree to complete Morrigan’s ritual.

Moreover, Grey Wardens are in a difficult state, and this cruel appearance would not make it easier, especially for Davrin, I imagine. Plus, BioWare would need to reshape the already canon-divergent (depending on your previous choices) plot, which could be a blessing or curse.

In any case, we don’t get to meet the Hero or Hawke, and I’m fine with it – let them rest, there are plenty of other cameos.
