Yes, SubD and Boolean don’t mix well because Boolean modeling creates N-gons and triangles. Here, you can see live Boolean recalculating quad topology in real-time, powered by some magic modifier stack created by Francesco Piacenti, also known as FR3NKD.
When combined with a tri-planar material, you can quickly achieve fascinating results like those below. Although Francesco hasn’t shared many details about this workflow, he’s considering creating a free tutorial on it soon.
