Enthusiast Proves Once Again That Anything, Even Nintendo’s Alarmo, Can Run DOOM

GaryOderNichts

Continuing the fantastic tradition of running DOOM on everything, Wii U reverse engineer GaryOderNichts managed to launch the game on Alarmo, Nintendo’s interactive alarm clock that shows animations and plays music from its popular games, making waking up a little bit more pleasant.

GaryOderNichts, however, wasn’t content with just its built-in functionality and first decided to show some custom effects and then a picture of a cat on the clock’s display and then went even further and proved that you can play Doom on it.

Gary used Alarmo’s big glowing button for movement and smaller keys to shoot. Is it comfortable? I imagine not, especially as turning around takes a while, but it’s still a great proof of concept, just like other unconventional objects and apps that can run DOOM, like Windows’ Notepad, DOS Doom 2, Milky Way bar, pregnancy test, Blender’s Geometry Nodes, and even cells.

Unfortunately, it’s not a perfect host for DOOM as it doesn’t support audio, and to avoid the USB loader memory size restrictions, the .wad needs to be compressed and then uncompressed to external memory on boot. But Gary says it’s possible “to load the shareware version of Doom entirely from USB, without modifying the Alarmo.”
