Fantastic Mecha with Lifelike Wear & Tear Made in Substance 3D & Maya


Check out this gorgeous animation of mecha with complex details and lifelike texturing created by 3D Artist and Animator Mohammad Taha. This is a reworked project that the artist created from scratch about a year ago. The updated version features a new animation and an overview of the rig and the workflow. 

The artist detailed the stages of the pipeline. He followed the traditional modeling process, which involved a lot of repetitive work, and shared that he is considering using Plasticity or Fusion for future projects that require hard-surface modeling. The texturing, with realistic wear and tear, was completed in Substance 3D Painter.

As for the rigging, the goal was to craft an automated rig with non-linear or repetitive movements for shaking and rotating parts. To speed up the process, the artist utilized expressions instead of nodes in Maya. The animation took approximately two days. Mohammad Taha shared a tip that tweaking the rig reference while animating might make the creation process faster. The final stages of lighting and rendering were completed using Marmoset Toolbag.
