GTA 6 took away the trophy for Most Anticipated Game at this year’s The Game Awards, yet there wasn’t a second trailer to celebrate the win. The chat area of the TGA livestream constantly sees shoutouts from fans eager to get any news about the next installment, among the many, many new game trailers and announcements.
Obbe Vermeij, the former Technical Director at Rockstar North, believes the situation should continue, and limiting the information about upcoming titles is beneficial to both the developer and players. He shared on Twitter:
“With upcoming games I think secrecy is a good thing. Knowing too much about a game long before it comes out ruins the experience.
This really works for R* with gta6. Because there is not much info out there, anticipation grows and when the game comes out it will be truly exciting.”
He takes the example of Indiana Jones and the Great Circle, which just came out this week. The fact that the developer and publisher chose to keep “a low profile and didn’t do a lot of marketing” contributes to the “surprising and refresh” experiences of players.
The former developer has been very active in sharing some old tidbits from when he worked on the franchise, telling fans what the original world for GTA San Andreas looked like, how the game’s mirrors were made, and the reason behind the chaotic aerial incidents; he also commented on the upcoming GTA 6, suggesting that the game might be delayed and that fans should lower their expectations for the game a bit because it might not be too different from GTA 5.

Obbe Vermeij served as designer, coder, and Technical Director at the developer from 1995 to 2009, working on titles like GTA: Vice City, GTA: San Andreas, GTA 3, and more. In September this year, he released a game called Plentiful, which is a “relaxing game about creating conditions for nature to thrive.”
