Planescape: Torment is considered one of the most influential classic RPGs. While its graphics might be a little outdated, it’s still extremely interesting to play. The game’s style is recognizable, and this is especially surprising when you learn its characters were made by a person with zero 3D experience.

Speaking to PC Gamer (via GamesRadar+), Planescape: Torment’s lead artist Tim Donley revealed that he hired a true wizard for the title – Eric Campanella, a 2D artist who designed and animated the companions.

“I was like, ‘Have you ever made a 3D model before?’ He’s like, ‘No, but I’d like to try’. And we just said, ‘knock yourself out’,” Donley shared.

What’s even more incredible is that Campanella created each character “in a day or less,” except for The Nameless One, the protagonist, who likely required a bit more work.

“It was like fucking Da Vinci. The guy turned out to be one of the best 3D modelers I’ve ever seen. Back then characters were like less than 1,000, 500 polygons, but he just understood anatomy so well.”

After Planescape: Torment, Campanella worked on Icewind Dale, Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance II, Call of Duty 2: Big Red One, Call of Duty 3, and other games, but I’m sure Planescape has a special place in his heart.

If you love games like Baldur’s Gate, Pathfinder, and Pillars of Eternity, you should check this game out. It’s a bit more gruesome and strange, but the experience is definitely memorable.
