Meta unveiled plans to complete its most ambitious subsea initiative, titled Project Waterworth, a more than 50,000 km cable exceeding the Earth’s circumference.
The cable will reach five major continents and connect the US, Brazil, India, South Africa, and other key regions. The project aims to ensure greater economic cooperation, facilitate digital inclusion, and develop technological development in these regions. “For example, in India, where we’ve already seen significant growth and investment in digital infrastructure, Waterworth will help accelerate this progress and support the country’s ambitious plans for its digital economy,” reads the announcement.
Undersea cables, similar to Project Waterforth, enable digital communication, video experiences, online transactions, and more and account for more than 95% of intercontinental traffic. The announced project is not the company’s first program in the field: “We’ve driven infrastructure innovation with various partners over the past decade, developing more than 20 subsea cables.”
Apart from the length, the project will feature first-of-its-kind routing, maximizing the depth of the cable up to 7,000 meters.
