Okami 2 Will Be a Direct Sequel to Original Story Made with RE Engine

Capcom

Okami 2, announced at The Game Awards 2024, will continue the story of the first game and is being developed with RE Engine, as the game’s Director Hideki Kamiya, Capcom Producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi, and Machine Head Works Producer Kiyohiko Sakata share in a recent interview.

The developers explained that Capcom’s proprietary RE Engine, used for powering such titles as Monster Hunter Wilds, Resident Evil 2 Remake, and Street Fighter 6, is specifically helpful in conveying their ideas. Yoshiaki Hirabayashi said that they cannot go into much detail yet and explained that the engine helps transfer the director’s artistic vision: “Without RE Engine at this point, we wouldn’t be able to realize Kamiya-san’s artistic dreams for this project.”

The plot of the game remains undisclosed. Hideki Kamiya shared that he had been building the main idea of the game’s theme in his head for several years, along with a detailed idea of how he wanted the game to turn out. However, the developers confirmed that Okami 2 will be a follow-up story to the first game released back in 2006.

Also, the creators discussed other details of crafting the sequel to the beloved game, the inspiration for the original story, and their partnership.
