Silent Hill Creator’s New Title Slitterhead Could be “Rough Around the Edges”

If the horror game genre is a riveting book, then the Silent Hill series is definitely one of the most talked-about contents in it. On October 8, Silent Hill 2 Remake continued the legend 23 years after the original title, and one month later, on November 8, Silent Hill franchise creator Keiichiro Toyama’s new title, Slitterhead, will also meet the players.

When Keiichiro Toyama’s name is closely tied to Silent Hill, it is inevitable that players will compare his new project with the iconic horror franchise. Right before Slitterhead’s release, Keiichiro Toyama shed some light on the similarities between the two in an interview with Game Rant:

From the very first “Silent Hill,” we have maintained a commitment to freshness and originality, even if it means being a bit rough around the edges. That attitude has remained consistent throughout my works and in “Slitterhead.”

When looking at the tags and description on Slitterhead’s Steam page, action and adventure seem to be the main factors, while the word “horror” is nowhere to be found. But it’s still fair that the community looks at the title as a horror, as its trailer and screenshots undoubtedly convey the same chilling feeling as horror games. Therefore, a good thing to look forward to in the new title, among many others, could probably be how it blends the action and horror perfectly and balances them to deliver fans’ experiences with “freshness and originality.”

In another chat with VGC, the director talked about the motivation behind making Slitterhead and the freedom that he enjoyed from founding an independent studio after leaving Sony:

“My motive was always to create original games. I feel I can do this without a massive budget. This allows me to express myself as well. By going independent, this has allowed me to do that. From my time at Sony, I feel like I’m accomplishing what I want to do.”

Slitterhead is set in a city inspired by Hong Kong during the 1980s and ’90s. Players will take on the role of “Hyoki,” an entity without any memory or physical form whose motive is to eliminate all the Slitterheads in the form of human beings. With your special ability to control human bodies at will, you can turn the blood into powerful weapons against the Slitterheads.

Slitterhead is scheduled for launch on November 8, later this week. The game will be available on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S, and PC via Steam, and the Epic Games Store. Earlier this year, Toyama also talked about this game, Bokeh Game Studio, and his future plans.
