Starship Troopers-Inspired Helldivers 2 Will Get a Movie of Its Own

During the ongoing CES 2025 event in Las Vegas, Sony announced that Arrowhead’s acclaimed third-person shooter Helldivers 2 will get adapted into a movie, making it the third Sony video game to be turned into a feature-length film, following Uncharted in 2022 and Gran Turismo in 2023.

Announced with the briefest segment one could imagine – lasting around 10 seconds – the upcoming adaptation will be created in collaboration with Sony Pictures, similar to the two previously mentioned projects. Considering that Helldivers 2 itself is heavily inspired by the 1997 movie Starship Troopers, the “Electric Boogaloo” jokes practically write themselves, but unfortunately, beyond confirming that the film is in the works, Sony provided no additional details, making it impossible to draw any conclusions about the project’s quality at this time.

That said, with Uncharted and Gran Turismo both achieving financial success and positive reception (critics’ opinions don’t count) and The Last of Us adaptation being arguably the best game-to-TV project to date, as well as Helldivers itself being a franchise beloved by many, it’s highly likely Helldivers: The Movie could become a worthy successor to the film that inspired it – unlike Starship Troopers’ actual sequels.

At CES, Sony also announced the upcoming movie adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, being developed at Columbia Pictures and PlayStation Productions, and a Ghost of Tsushima anime, produced by Kimetsu no Yaiba and Sword Art Online creator Aniplex and coming to Crunchyroll in 2027.
