Movie company Sony Pictures has announced that the Street Fighter movie has been removed from its release schedule–but this doesn’t necessarily mean the movie is no longer happening.
The Street Fighter movie was originally lined up to release on March 20, 2026, but now it’s completely off Sony’s calendar. It’s a somewhat unexpected move, as a new director, Kitao Sakurai, just came aboard in late February, replacing the previous co-directors, the Philippou brothers.
That development might have signaled the movie was making progress, and perhaps it still is. As Variety pointed out, the Street Fighter movie could be rescheduled and eventually released, but as for now, it has no release date.
Fans may recall how there already was a Street Fighter movie back in 1994 starring Jean-Claude Van Damme. It made almost $100 million at the box office back then. Kristin Kreuk starred in the reboot film, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, which bombed in theaters in 2009.
While fighting game fans have to wait a while for the Street Fighter movie, another movie based on a fighting game, Mortal Kombat 2, hits theaters this October.
In addition to Street Fighter, there are many other video game movies in the works now, with the next releases being A Minecraft Movie (April 4) and the Until Dawn movie (April 25). Check out the gallery below to see all the upcoming video game movies in the works.
