The Last Of Us Season 2 Director Reveals How The Sims Movie Was Inspired By The Show

Prior to joining the directors of The Last of Us Season 2, director Kate Herron had already established herself as a helmer on Marvel’s Loki and Netflix’s Sex Education. Herron’s next video-game adaptation will be The Sims movie, which she will direct and co-write. Now, Herron has shared how her time on The Last of Us inspired her work on The Sims.

While speaking with Variety, Herron credited The Last of Us co-showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann for giving her the opportunity to helm Season 2, Episode 4, and revealed that her first meeting with the duo over Zoom came while she was dressed as Ellie. As for The Sims, a writing quirk by Mazin is something that Herron is borrowing for her scripts going forward.

“Craig writes the thoughts of the characters in the script,” said Herron. “I love it, and I have 100% stolen that, and I’m now doing it in all the scripts I write. It’s such a good idea.”

Herron went on to note that she is still writing The Sims script before adding, “We’re all feeling very good about it.”

The current incarnation of The Sims movie was announced in 2024, with Margot Robbie’s LuckyChap production company signed on to produce the film for Amazon MGM Studios. Briony Redman is co-writing the script with Herron, but the project doesn’t currently have a release date. However, EA Entertainment has confirmed that The Sims will be produced for the big screen as opposed to a Prime Video-exclusive movie.
