  • Players’ Choice: Vote for May 2025’s best new game

Last month, we went to the heavens, hell, and everything in between. Which game spoke to you the most?  Some of the big new releases included Doom: The Dark Ages, Elden Ring Nightreign, F1 25, and The Midnight Walk.

How does it work? At the end of every month, PlayStation Blog will open a poll where you can vote for the best new game released that month. After the polls close we will tally your votes, and announce the winner on our social channels and PlayStation.Blog.

What is the voting criteria? That’s up to you! If you were only able to recommend one new release to a friend that month, which would it be? Note: re-released games don’t qualify, but remakes do. We define remakes as ambitious, larger-scale rebuilds such as Resident Evil 4and Final Fantasy VII Remake. How are nominees decided? The PlayStation Blog editorial team will gather a list of that month’s most noteworthy releases and use it to seed the poll.

  • Feature: Nintendo Life eShop Selects (May 2025)

Image: Nintendo LifeThe summer is here, the Switch 2 is almost here, and that means it's eShop Selects time for May.
This is our very last Switch 1 edition of our monthly feature — but don't worry, things aren't changing with the release of a new console. You'll still be getting your monthly dose of eShop hidden gems that we've reviewed, but Switch 2 eShop exclusives will be joining the party too.
So, let's jump in — like previous editions, our team of writers and contributors have got together to vote for their top three games from all game releases we reviewed from May 2025. The games with the highest total scores make our top three. It really is that simple.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube814kWatch on YouTube

    Switch too

The very best Switch 2 games coming soon

    Honourable mentions
Let's get something out of the way, first — Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time would be eligible for this, but we're currently in the process of reviewing it. As such, because it's also coming to Switch 2 on launch day, it will be eligible for votes in our June edition. So don't panic!
Another notable release missing is Pipistrello and the Cursed Yoyo, a late-May release that's been reviewing extremely well. This is another one we're working on as we speak, which is why you won't spy it below.
So what have we got in the running this month? From our 7/10 eShop exclusives... there's quite a lot to choose from! Every single game got at least one vote from our writers, so here's what just missed out on a top-three spot, followed by the podium:

Arcade Archives NebulasRay | Review: 7/10
    Dunk Dunk | Review: 7/10
Into the Restless Ruins | Review: 9/10
Labyrinth of the Demon King | Review: 8/10
    Old Skies | Review: 7/10

    Scoot over, Ness

    3rd Place - Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny
Publisher: Capcom / Developer: CapcomRelease Date: 23rd May 2025/ 23rd May 2025We're living in the samurai renaissance, so why shouldn't one of the most well-known video game samurais return to take the spotlight? Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny got a remaster almost 23 years after its original release, and it's still excellent, despite the aspect ratio issues.
This is largely a no-frills release of the PS2 game, with some nice quality-of-life feature like autosave, better weapon switching, and the ability to swap between new and tank controls. It's perhaps not the most popular game in the series, but we love it, scoring it an 8/10.

    Blade of glory

2nd Place - Please, Touch The Artwork 2
Publisher: Studio Waterzooi / Developer: Thomas WaterzooiRelease Date: 23rd May 2025/ 23rd May 2025Ahhh, here's a Nintendo Life favourite. Please, Touch The Artwork 2 is a delightfully wacky expansion of Thomas Waterzooi's predecessor, this time focusing on a skeleton andthe artwork of James Ensor, a Belgian artist. Oh, and the skeleton is the artist himself. Yep.
That should give you an idea of what to expect from the game — it's surreal, absurd, gentle, and relaxing all in one, and for less that an absolute steal. You can play it on your lunch break with a cuppa and you'll be done in under an hour. A worthy 9/10, if we say so ourselves.

    Touch, I remember touch

1st Place - Duck Detective: The Ghost of Glamping
Publisher: Happy Broccoli / Developer: Happy BroccoliRelease Date: 22nd May 2025/ 22nd May 2025Short and sweet seems to be a theme this month, and our eShop Selects winner — and the final Switch 1-only winner — goes to a lovely little 3-hour mystery starring a recovering bread addict duck. Duck Detective: The Ghost of Glamping is the kind of levity we need in the world right now.
This sequel is a total delight, barmy and silly with a little bit of thought put into it. It's not the most challenging mystery, nor will many of the reveals surprise, but it never failed to make us smile. We scored Duck Detective's second case an 8/10, and we hope to see Eugene McQuacklin return.

    I suspect fowl play

    < Nintendo eShop Selects - April 2025
Do you agree with our ranking? Tell us about your favourite eShop releases of last month by voting in our poll and sharing your thoughts in the comments.

What's the best eShop game from our May 2025 picks? No results yet, check back later...

How we decide our eShop Selects top three: As we reach the end of every month, the Nintendo Life staff vote on their favourite titles from a list of games selected by the editorial team. To qualify for this list, these games must have been released as a digital-only Nintendo Switch eShop title in that particular month, and must have been reviewed on Nintendo Life; we select the qualifying games based on their review scores.
Staff are then asked to vote for three games that they think deserve to sit right at the very top of that list; first choice gets three points, second choice gets two points, and third choice gets one point. These votes are then tallied to create a top-three list, with the overall winner taking that month's top prize.

Blade of glory 2nd Place - Please, Touch The Artwork 2 Publisher: Studio Waterzooi / Developer: Thomas WaterzooiRelease Date: 23rd May 2025/ 23rd May 2025Ahhh, here's a Nintendo Life favourite. Touch, I remember touch 1st Place - Duck Detective: The Ghost of Glamping Publisher: Happy Broccoli / Developer: Happy BroccoliRelease Date: 22nd May 2025/ 22nd May 2025Short and sweet seems to be a theme this month, and our eShop Selects winner — and the final Switch 1-only winner — goes to a lovely little 3-hour mystery starring a recovering bread addict duck. I suspect fowl play < Nintendo eShop Selects - April 2025 Do you agree with our ranking? Feature: Nintendo Life eShop Selects (May 2025)
Image: Nintendo LifeThe summer is here, the Switch 2 is almost here, and that means it's eShop Selects time for May. It really is that simple.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube814kWatch on YouTube Switch too The very best Switch 2 games coming soon Honourable mentions Let's get something out of the way, first — Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time would be eligible for this, but we're currently in the process of reviewing it. Every single game got at least one vote from our writers, so here's what just missed out on a top-three spot, followed by the podium: Arcade Archives NebulasRay | Review: 7/10 Dunk Dunk | Review: 7/10 Into the Restless Ruins | Review: 9/10 Labyrinth of the Demon King | Review: 8/10 Old Skies | Review: 7/10 Scoot over, Ness 3rd Place - Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny Publisher: Capcom / Developer: CapcomRelease Date: 23rd May 2025 (USA) / 23rd May 2025 (UK/EU)We're living in the samurai renaissance, so why shouldn't one of the most well-known video game samurais return to take the spotlight? Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny got a remaster almost 23 years after its original release, and it's still excellent, despite the aspect ratio issues. This is largely a no-frills release of the PS2 game, with some nice quality-of-life feature like autosave, better weapon switching, and the ability to swap between new and tank controls. It's perhaps not the most popular game in the series, but we love it, scoring it an 8/10. • Nintendo issues huge Switch 2 backwards compatibility boost as release countdown continues

A week away from launch, Nintendo has confirmed which Nintendo Switch games have been tested for Switch 2, and it's great news for anyone with a huge collectionTech11:31, 29 May 2025So close, and yet so farNintendo Switch 2 is just seven days away, and while some units are already out in the wild, we've had some questions about backwards compatibility. After all, Nintendo has constantly said the "most" of the Switch 1's huge library will be playable on Switch 2, with some getting free upgrades and some including paid additions.‌Others, including Fortnite, will work right out of the box, but now Nintendo has revealed a much more extensive list of games that willrun on the new console.‌Here's all we've learned.Nintendo Switch 2 can play the majority of Switch 1 gamesOver on Nintendo's support page for backwards compatibility, the company has tested 75% of third-party games released on Switch 1.‌Considering that's more than 15,000 games, that's impressive, and more are being tested every day.Of the games tested, Nintendo says 118 of them have "start-up issues" of some description, while a further 50 "start up on Nintendo Switch 2 but include some in-game compatibility issues”.These include Mega Man Legacy Collection, Fall Guys, and Saints Row IV: Re-Elected.‌As for games that can't be played on Switch, the list is slim and includes Nintendo's Labo Toy-Con VR kit and apps like Hulu or Crunchyroll.Games like Fitness Boxing, DOOM Eternal, and Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster are all expected to receive a patch before launch next week to improve compatibility.Switch 2 will play older games‌Some games will require the original Nintendo Switch Joy-Con controllers, too, so don't get rid of those. These games include Ring Fit Adventure, Game Builder Garage, and WarioWare: Move It!Nintendo Switch Sports' leg strap accessory won't work with the Switch 2 Joy-Con, too."In addition to Nintendo Switch 2 games, Nintendo Switch 2 can play compatible physical and digital games released on the Nintendo Switch system," Nintendo explains.‌"The Nintendo Switch 2 system's hardware is different from Nintendo Switch, and some Nintendo Switch games may not be supported on or fully compatible with Nintendo Switch 2.""During testing, games are started and limited testing is conducted. The Holy See Pavilion Presents a Living Practice of Restoration at the Venice Architecture Biennale 2025Save this picture!Vatican Pavilion. Image © Jose HeviaAt the 19th International Architecture Exhibition, La Biennale di Venezia, the Dicastery for Culture and Education presents "Opera Aperta", a project that positions architecture as a practice of collective care and responsibility. Curated by Marina Otero Verzier and Giovanna Zabotti, Opera Aperta is set within the Santa Maria Ausiliatrice Complex in Venice's Castello district. Designed by Tatiana Bilbao ESTUDIO and MAIO Architects, the project transforms the 500-square-meter site into a space for collaborative restoration and public engagement. Conceived as a work in progress rather than a finished installation, Opera Aperta functions as a platform for ongoing exchange, participation, and engagement rooted in the local context. This open and process-oriented approach was recognized during the opening events, where the Holy See Pavilion received the Golden Lion's Special Mention for National Participation.
this picture! For six months, the project activates the Santa Maria Ausiliatrice Complex in Venice's Castello district, occupying approximately 500 square meters. The site, rich in historical and cultural layers, was originally established in 1171 as a hospice for pilgrims. Over the centuries, it evolved into the city's oldest hospital and, by the 18th century, served as a nursery, school, and boarding facility. Designated for cultural use by the City of Venice in 2001, the complex is now under the management of the Dicastery for Culture and Education of the Holy See, which is overseeing its restoration as part of a long-term commitment to preserving its significance within the urban fabric.this picture!Within this context, Opera Aperta proposes an architectural approach centered on repair, continuity, and reinterpretation. Rather than replacing existing elements, the project focuses on enhancing the built environment through restoration. Cracks and imperfections are treated not as defects, but as spaces for new meaning and engagement. During the exhibition, the Holy See Pavilion becomes a site of ongoing transformation, an open framework that accommodates the work of architectural studios, local associations, and civic organizations. This collaborative structure invites contributions from across the community, positioning the project as a model for inclusive, adaptive, and context-sensitive architectural practice. Opera Aperta is a collaborative process involving an international team and local collectives together, claiming repair as a creative and radical practice that transcends architectural form to nourish communities, ecosystems and the fragile bonds between them. By revitalising an existing structure, we value its cracks and losses not as flaws to be hidden, but as openings to new possibilities. These thresholds invite us to reimagine the relationship between past and future, growth and decay, rupture and regeneration.
