• Hades 2's Secret Mortal Kombat Tribute Explained

There are a handful of video game franchises that have been around for so long and that have been so influential that they've transcended the medium. Mortal Kombat is one such franchise, having become a household name overnight when it originally hit arcade floors in 1992, and it having a wealth of multimedia adaptations and spinoffs in the 33 years since. But alongside their own projects, hugely influential franchises like Mortal Kombat are often referenced throughout the medium they mostly belong to, and Hades 2 is the most recent example of that.

  • "This is the endgame" Helldivers 2's battle for Super Earth has entered its "final phase", with agonising failure triggering an "all-out assault" on the final four cities

Time must fly when you're having fun. Or at least when you're defending Super Earth from a huge Illuminate invasio. Helldivers 2's latest major order is the "final phase" of the battle for the divers' home planet that's been raging since the Heart of Democracy update dropped on May 20.
I must admit, I thought the Galactic War twist that's brought the biggest number of Helldivers back to the game of any update it's gotten so far would last a bit longer than three MOs. Then again, this is Helldivers 2 - the war ain't anywhere close to over while there are still troops on the march and enemies to surf on.

To see this content please enable targeting cookies.

First of all, the last major order, which expired earlier today, was a proper heartbreaker. After casually killing 2.5 billion Illuminate in the first stage of Super Earth's defense, players weren't quite able to successfully extract from missions against the Illuminate 20 million times. They got damn close, though.
So, with that, while the divers have worn the Illuminate fleet's strength down to an estimated "24% of its original operating power", only four of Super Earth's seven Mega Cities are left standing. Yep, two more have joined the brilliantly-named Eagleopolis as smouldering wrecks.
Cue Arrowhead's latest order, which declares the third phase of Super Earth's defense to be the final one. "High Command anticipates an all-out assault to take the final four Mega Cities," the studio wrote, "The Illuminate have spent a century preparing for this invasion; they will hold back nothing. What has come before was the preamble; this is the endgame...The Helldivers have their orders: HOLD Super Earth."

To see this content please enable targeting cookies.

In order to do that, players'll need to dig in on Super Earth against the squids, while also scrapping 200 million Automatons so they can bring the Democracy Space Station back online to aid that first bit. As of writing, nearly 98 million bots have already been bashed in since the order debuted this morning.
Folks are seemingly going all out, no doubt buoyed by the fact today's little Helldivers 2 patch - 01.003.003 - made a very popular change to the Reinforced Epaulettes passive that comes with the armour sets from the recently deployed Masters of Ceremony Warbond. As well as making your limbs less likely to snap like twigs, you'll now be able to reload your primary weapon 30% faster and do 50% more melee damage when rocking the Parade Commander and Honorary Guard sets.
    Cue celebrations on Reddit.
Are you planning on jumping in to help out with this final phase of Super Earth saving? Let us know below!

  • Switch 2's Yakuza 0 Director's Cut Is An Upgraded Version Aimed At Old And New Fans

Ryu Ga Gotoku fans are a special type of fandom where almost everyone involved agrees on one thing: Yakuza 0 is the best starting point in the Like A Dragon/Yakuza series. It's rare that someone disagrees that Yakuza 0 is one of the best titles in the entire franchise and still one of the best games the studio has made. Even after eight mainline titles--Yakuza Kiwami through Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth--there is simply no game in the series that catches the same feel as Yakuza 0. Fans will even beg any of their friends, gamers or not, to play Yakuza 0 because it's really that wonderful. When Yakuza Kiwami was released on Nintendo Switch last fall, fans anticipated Yakuza 0 would finally make its way to the Nintendo platforms too. Although there were many technical issues with Kiwami running on an aged console, RGG fans will be happy to know Yakuza 0 Director's Cut on Nintendo Switch 2 runs smoother than a perfect score on "Friday Night" in the disco minigame. If you haven't checked out the Yakuza/Like A Dragon series yet, the Director's Cut is shaping up to be the best way to try it, as it takes place first in the story chronologically, and the new Nintendo Switch 2 version will have upgraded graphics and more features that are missing from the original.Continue Reading at GameSpot

    Published on May 23, 2025

Those wanting to utilise the Switch 2's GameChat feature will need to register a phone number.
The Switch 2's GameChat feature does pretty much as it says on the tin. It will allow users to communicate with their friends and familywhile playing a game. This is done via a microphone built into the console itself, while a separate camera will also allow for video chat. It is all accessed via that once-mysterious C button on the console.

Nintendo Switch 2 Hands-On Preview: Mario Kart World Impressions & More! Watch on YouTube
GameChat will be available for Switch 2 users for free, without a Nintendo Switch Online membership, until 31st March 2026. After that, users will only be able to access the feature if they have a paid NSO membership. However, if you read the small print, users will also need to register a phone number with a Nintendo account to access this feature.
On Nintendo's official GameChat page, the small print reads: "Mobile phone number registration required to use GameChat." On the same page, the company states that as an "additional security measure" text message verification "is required to set up GameChat". It adds that text message verification for children wanting to make the most of the Switch 2's GameChat feature will need to use a number registered to a parent or guardian's account to get access.
This phone number requirement is for here in the UK, as well as across the pond in the US, so presumably will be a requirement worldwide.

On its debut, the Switch 2's GameChat will include text-to-speech and live captions. As we reported earlier, Nintendo will also be able to record video and voice chats stored on your console for a limited time, if you give consent. This is to ensure a "safe and family-friendly online environment", Nintendo said, with footage only reviewed as part of its user-report system.
The Nintendo Switch 2 will be available worldwide in just under two weeks time, on 5th June. For more, you can check out our guide to the Switch 2's specs here.

  • Death Stranding 2's Scoring Well With Test Reviewers, But Kojima Isn't Satisfied

Death Stranding was a polarizing game when it was first released, but for the upcoming sequel, previews and early reviews for the game have largely been positive. In a recent interview, game director Hideo Kojima explained how he was happy to see test audiences react more favorably to Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, but he also explained how this had left him feeling conflicted."Sony is pleased, of course, but I do wish I was a bit more controversial," Kojima said to Edge Magazine. "Blockbuster films need an 80% approval rating--I don't want to make games like that. I'm not interested in appealing to the mass market or selling millions of copies. That’s not what I'm aiming for."Kojima did acknowledge the paradox of this approach, as while he may not be aiming to appeal to the broader gaming market, Death Stranding 2 still needs to sell a sizable number of units if he wants to keep the lights on at Kojima Productions and pay his staff. The other benefit to reviews being divided over a game is that it allows a developer like Kojima to receive constructive criticism and implement improvements, both in the base game and a potential sequel. At the same time, Kojima says that he won't alter themes or story based on feedback from players.Continue Reading at GameSpot

  • Switch 2's News Section Will Reduce Clutter With Individual Account Feeds

Image: NintendoIf you've ever used multiple accounts on your Switch, the news feed is often bombarded with posts. This has been particularly noticeable if you have access to an account for a different region, resulting in the same post appearing for each location. With this in mind, it looks like Nintendo has made a slight refresh to the news feed section on Switch 2.
You'll now apparently be able to select the news feed you would like to see, so hopefully there'll no longer be multiple posts of the same news on your feed. Here's a quick glimpse courtesy of 'OatmealDome' on social media, where the system asks you which feed you would like to see.
This isn't the only adjustment Nintendo will be making to the Switch 2 user interface and experience. Its also got plenty of other subtle updates and enhancements to improve the overall experience. This includes updates to its eShop, which has been improved to run more smoothly when displaying a large number of games.
Nintendo's system news feed isn't the only place to get official updates from Nintendo. The Japanese firm recently launched its new mobile app Nintendo Today! which shares exclusive updates about the Switch 2 and even upcoming projects like The Legend of Zelda movie.

    Bring it on!
