• MillerKnoll opens new design archive showcasing over one million objects from the company’s history

In a 12,000-square-foot warehouse in Zeeland, Michigan, hundreds of chairs, sofas, and loveseats rest on open storage racks. Their bold colors and elegant forms stand in striking contrast to the industrial setting. A plush recliner, seemingly made for sinking into, sits beside a mesh desk chair like those found in generic office cubicles. Nearby, a rare prototype of the Knoll Womb® Chair, gifted by Eero Saarinen to his mother, blooms open like a flower–inviting someone to sit. There’s also mahogany furniture designed by Gilbert Rohde for Herman Miller, originally unveiled at the 1933 World’s Fair; early office pieces by Florence Knoll; and a sculptural paper lamp by Isamu Noguchi. This is the newly unveiled MillerKnoll Archive, a space that honors the distinct legacies of its formerly rival brands. In collaboration with New York–based design firm Standard Issue, MillerKnoll has created a permanent display of its most iconic designs at the company’s Michigan Design Yard headquarters.

In the early 1920s, Dutch-born businessman Herman Miller became the majority stakeholder in a Zeeland, Michigan, company where his son-in-law served as president. Following the acquisition, Star Furniture Co. was renamed the Herman Miller Furniture Company. Meanwhile, across the Atlantic in Stuttgart, Germany, Walter Knoll joined his family’s furniture business and formed close ties with modernist pioneers Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and Walter Gropius, immersing himself in the Bauhaus movement as Germany edged toward war.
Just before the outbreak of World War II, Walter Knoll relocated to the United States and established his own furniture company in New York City. Around the same time, Michigan native Florence Schust was studying at the Cranbrook Academy of Art under Eliel Saarinen. There, she met Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames. Schust, who later married Walter Knoll, and Saarinen would go on to become key designers for the company, while Eames would play a similarly pivotal role at Herman Miller—setting both firms on parallel paths in the world of modern design.
The facility was designed in collaboration with New York-based design firm Standard Issue. The archive, located in MillerKnoll’s Design Yard Headquarters, is 12,000 square feet and holds over one million objects.Formerly seen as competitors, Herman Miller acquired Knoll four years ago in a billion merger that formed MillerKnoll. The deal united two of the most influential names in American furniture, merging their storied design legacies and the iconic pieces that helped define modern design. Now, MillerKnoll is honoring the distinct histories of each brand through this new archive. The archive is a permanent home for the brands’ archival collections and also exhibits the evolution of modern design. The facility is organized into three distinct areas: an exhibition space, open storage, and a reading room.

The facility’s first exhibition, Manufacturing Modern, explores the intertwined histories of Knoll and Herman Miller. It showcases designs from the individuals who helped shape each company. The open storage area displays over 300 pieces of modern furniture, featuring both original works from Knoll and Herman Miller as well as contemporary designs. In addition to viewing the furniture pieces, visitors can kick back in the reading room, which offers access to a collection of archival materials, including correspondence, photography, drawings, and textiles.
The facility is organized into three distinct areas: an exhibition space, open storage, and a reading room and will be open for tours in partnership with the Cranbrook Art Academy this summer.“The debut of the MillerKnoll Archives invites our communities to experience design history – and imagine its future– in one dynamic space,” said MillerKnoll’s chief creative and product officer Ben Watson. “The ability to not only understand how iconic designs came to be, but how design solutions evolved over time, is a never-ending source of inspiration.”
Exclusive tours of the archive will be available in July and August in partnership with the Cranbrook Art Museum and in October in partnership with Docomomo.

  • EPFL Researchers Unveil FG2 at CVPR: A New AI Model That Slashes Localization Errors by 28% for Autonomous Vehicles in GPS-Denied Environments

Navigating the dense urban canyons of cities like San Francisco or New York can be a nightmare for GPS systems. The towering skyscrapers block and reflect satellite signals, leading to location errors of tens of meters. For you and me, that might mean a missed turn. But for an autonomous vehicle or a delivery robot, that level of imprecision is the difference between a successful mission and a costly failure. These machines require pinpoint accuracy to operate safely and efficiently. Addressing this critical challenge, researchers from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausannein Switzerland have introduced a groundbreaking new method for visual localization during CVPR 2025
Their new paper, “FG2: Fine-Grained Cross-View Localization by Fine-Grained Feature Matching,” presents a novel AI model that significantly enhances the ability of a ground-level system, like an autonomous car, to determine its exact position and orientation using only a camera and a corresponding aerialimage. The new approach has demonstrated a remarkable 28% reduction in mean localization error compared to the previous state-of-the-art on a challenging public dataset.
    Key Takeaways:

Superior Accuracy: The FG2 model reduces the average localization error by a significant 28% on the VIGOR cross-area test set, a challenging benchmark for this task.
Human-like Intuition: Instead of relying on abstract descriptors, the model mimics human reasoning by matching fine-grained, semantically consistent features—like curbs, crosswalks, and buildings—between a ground-level photo and an aerial map.
Enhanced Interpretability: The method allows researchers to “see” what the AI is “thinking” by visualizing exactly which features in the ground and aerial images are being matched, a major step forward from previous “black box” models.
Weakly Supervised Learning: Remarkably, the model learns these complex and consistent feature matches without any direct labels for correspondences. It achieves this using only the final camera pose as a supervisory signal.

Challenge: Seeing the World from Two Different Angles
The core problem of cross-view localization is the dramatic difference in perspective between a street-level camera and an overhead satellite view. A building facade seen from the ground looks completely different from its rooftop signature in an aerial image. Existing methods have struggled with this. Some create a general “descriptor” for the entire scene, but this is an abstract approach that doesn’t mirror how humans naturally localize themselves by spotting specific landmarks. Other methods transform the ground image into a Bird’s-Eye-Viewbut are often limited to the ground plane, ignoring crucial vertical structures like buildings.

    FG2: Matching Fine-Grained Features
The EPFL team’s FG2 method introduces a more intuitive and effective process. It aligns two sets of points: one generated from the ground-level image and another sampled from the aerial map.

Here’s a breakdown of their innovative pipeline:

Mapping to 3D: The process begins by taking the features from the ground-level image and lifting them into a 3D point cloud centered around the camera. This creates a 3D representation of the immediate environment.
Smart Pooling to BEV: This is where the magic happens. Instead of simply flattening the 3D data, the model learns to intelligently select the most important features along the verticaldimension for each point. It essentially asks, “For this spot on the map, is the ground-level road marking more important, or is the edge of that building’s roof the better landmark?” This selection process is crucial, as it allows the model to correctly associate features like building facades with their corresponding rooftops in the aerial view.
Feature Matching and Pose Estimation: Once both the ground and aerial views are represented as 2D point planes with rich feature descriptors, the model computes the similarity between them. It then samples a sparse set of the most confident matches and uses a classic geometric algorithm called Procrustes alignment to calculate the precise 3-DoFpose.

    Unprecedented Performance and Interpretability
The results speak for themselves. On the challenging VIGOR dataset, which includes images from different cities in its cross-area test, FG2 reduced the mean localization error by 28% compared to the previous best method. It also demonstrated superior generalization capabilities on the KITTI dataset, a staple in autonomous driving research.

Perhaps more importantly, the FG2 model offers a new level of transparency. By visualizing the matched points, the researchers showed that the model learns semantically consistent correspondences without being explicitly told to. For example, the system correctly matches zebra crossings, road markings, and even building facades in the ground view to their corresponding locations on the aerial map. This interpretability is extremenly valuable for building trust in safety-critical autonomous systems.
“A Clearer Path” for Autonomous Navigation
The FG2 method represents a significant leap forward in fine-grained visual localization. By developing a model that intelligently selects and matches features in a way that mirrors human intuition, the EPFL researchers have not only shattered previous accuracy records but also made the decision-making process of the AI more interpretable. This work paves the way for more robust and reliable navigation systems for autonomous vehicles, drones, and robots, bringing us one step closer to a future where machines can confidently navigate our world, even when GPS fails them.

By now, there’s a good chance you’ve encountered Google’s AI Overviews, possibly thousands of times. Appearing as blurbs at the top of search results, they attempt to settle your queries before you scroll — to offer answers, or relevant information, gleaned from websites that you no longer need to click on. The feature was officially rolled out at Google’s developer conference last year and had been in testing for quite some time before that; on the occasion of this year’s conference, the company characterized it as “one of the most successful launches in Search in the past decade,” a strangely narrow claim that is almost certainly true: Google put AI summaries on top of everything else, for everyone, as if to say, “Before you use our main product, see if this works instead.”
This year’s conference included another change to search, this one more profound but less aggressively deployed. “AI Mode,” which has similarly been in beta testing for a while, will appear as an option for all users. It’s not like AI Overviews; that is, it’s not an extra module taking up space on a familiar search-results page but rather a complete replacement for conventional search. It’s Google’s “most powerful AI search, with more advanced reasoning and multimodality, and the ability to go deeper through follow-up questions and helpful links to the web,” the company says, “breaking down your question into subtopics and issuing a multitude of queries simultaneously on your behalf.” It’s available to everyone. It’s a lot like using AI-first chatbots that have search functions, like those from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Perplexity, and Google says it’s destined for greater things than a small tab. “As we get feedback, we’ll graduate many features and capabilities from AI Mode right into the core Search experience,” the company says.
I’ve been testing AI Mode for a few months now, and in some ways it’s less radical than it sounds andfeels. It resembles the initial demos of AI search tools, including those by Google, meaning it responds to many questions with clean, ad-free answers. Sometimes it answers in extended plain language, but it also makes a lot of lists and pulls in familiar little gridded modules — especially when you ask about things you can buy — resulting in a product that, despite its chatty interface, feels an awful lot like … search.
Again, now you can try it yourself, and your mileage may vary; it hasn’t drawn me away from Google proper for a lot of thoughtless rote tasks, but it’s competitive with ChatGPT for the expanding range of searchish tasks you might attempt with a chatbot.
From the very first use, however, AI Mode crystallized something about Google’s priorities and in particular its relationship to the web from which the company has drawn, and returned, many hundreds of billions of dollars of value. AI Overviews demoted links, quite literally pushing content from the web down on the page, and summarizing its contents for digestion without clicking:

    Photo-Illustration: Intelligencer; Screenshot: Google

Meanwhile, AI Mode all but buries them, not just summarizing their content for reading within Google’s product but inviting you to explore and expand on those summaries by asking more questions, rather than clicking out. In many cases, links are retained merely to provide backup and sourcing, included as footnotes and appendices rather than destinations:

    Photo-Illustration: Intelligencer; Screenshot: Google

This is typical with AI search tools and all but inevitable now that such things are possible. In terms of automation, this means companies like OpenAI and Google are mechanizing some of the “work” that goes into using tools like Google search, removing, when possible, the step where users leave their platforms and reducing, in theory, the time and effort it takes to navigate to somewhere else when necessary. In even broader terms — contra Google’s effort to brand this as “going beyond information to intelligence” — this is an example of how LLMs offer different ways to interact with much of the same information: summarization rather than retrieval, regeneration rather than fact-finding, and vibe-y reconstruction over deterministic reproduction.
This is interesting to think about and often compelling to use but leaves unresolved one of the first questions posed by chatbots-as-search: Where will they get all the data they need to continue to work well? When Microsoft and Google showed off their first neo-search mockups in 2023, which are pretty close to today’s AI mode, it revealed a dilemma:
Search engines still provide the de facto gateway to the broader web, and have a deeply codependent relationship with the people and companies whose content they crawl, index, and rank; a Google that instantly but sometimes unreliably summarizes the websites to which it used to send people would destroy that relationship, and probably a lot of websites, including the ones on which its models were trained.
And, well, yep! Now, both AI Overviews and AI Mode, when they aren’t occasionally hallucinating, produce relatively clean answers that benefit in contrast to increasingly degraded regular search results on Google, which are full of hyperoptimized and duplicative spamlike content designed first and foremost with the demands of Google’s ranking algorithms and advertising in mind. AI Mode feels one step further removed from that ecosystem and once again looks good in contrast, a placid textual escape from Google’s own mountain of links that look like ads and ads that look like links. In its drive to embrace AI, Google is further concealing the raw material that fuels it, demoting links as it continues to ingest them for abstraction. Google may still retain plenty of attention to monetize and perhaps keep even more of it for itself, now that it doesn’t need to send people elsewhere; in the process, however, it really is starving the web that supplies it with data on which to train and
Two years later, Google has become more explicit about the extent to which it’s moving on from the “you provide us results to rank, and we send you visitors to monetize” bargain, with the head of search telling The Verge, “I think the search results page was a construct.” Which is true, as far as it goes, but also a remarkable thing to hear from a company that’s communicated carefully and voluminously to website operators about small updates to its search algorithms for years.
I don’t doubt that Google has been thinking about this stuff for a while and that there are people at the company who deem it strategically irrelevant or at least of secondary importance to winning the AI race — the fate of the web might not sound terribly important when your bosses are talking nonstop about cashing out its accumulated data and expertise for AGI. I also don’t want to be precious about the web as it actually exists in 2025, nor do I suggest that websites working with or near companies like Meta and Google should have expected anything but temporary, incidental alignment with their businesses. If I had to guess, the future of Google search looks more like AI Overviews than AI mode — a jumble of widgets and modules including and united by AI-generated content, rather than a clean break — if only for purposes of sustaining Google’s multi-hundred-billion-dollar advertising business.
But I also don’t want to assume Google knows exactly how this stuff will play out for Google, much less what it will actually mean for millions of websites, and their visitors, if Google stops sending as many people beyond its results pages. Google’s push into productizing generative AI is substantially fear-driven, faith-based, and informed by the actions of competitors that are far less invested in and dependent on the vast collection of behaviors — websites full of content authentic and inauthentic, volunteer and commercial, social and antisocial, archival and up-to-date — that make up what’s left of the web and have far less to lose. Maybe, in a few years, a fresh economy will grow around the new behaviors produced by searchlike AI tools; perhaps companies like OpenAI and Google will sign a bunch more licensing deals; conceivably, this style of search automation simply collapses the marketplace supported by search, leveraging training based on years of scraped data to do more with less. In any case, the signals from Google — despite its unconvincing suggestions to the contrary — are clear: It’ll do anything to win the AI race. If that means burying the web, then so be it.

• 26 free macOS apps every Mac user should have

    Macworld

There’s something of a misconception when it comes to the Mac: that Mac apps cost more, just like the computer itself. While powerful tools like Photoshop or Final Cut Pro certainly have price tags commensurate with their robust feature sets, many of the greatest Mac apps won’t cost you anything more than the time they take to download them.

A quick note before we begin. Apple has changed its security settings in macOS, so you’ll need to allow your system to open a couple of these apps. A dialogue box may pop up telling you a certain app “is an application downloaded from the Internet. Are you sure you want to open it?” Click Open to proceed with the installation.

These are the best free Mac apps we use, in alphabetical order.

    Amphetamine – free anti-sleep app

    Foundry

Amphetamine will keep your Mac awake. Featuring a menu bar-based interface, the app lets you temporarily override your Mac’s sleep scheduleand even adds a few useful features like activating only when connected to specific Wi-Fi networks and keeping only certain drives awake.

    Download Amphetamine.

    Audacity – free audio editor

    IDG

Amateur Mac recording engineers have known about the power of Audacity for years. A robust desktop client for recording and editing multi-track projects, Audacity will let you edit and add effects just like you would with Logic Pro X without needing to spend hundreds of dollars on a bunch of features you won’t need. Granted, the interface is quite a bit outdated, but you need only spend a few minutes with it to see just how powerful it is. A killer tool for podcasting, recording audio books, and creating video voiceovers, Audacity will turn your Mac into a multi-track recording studio, and it won’t cost you a dime.

    Download Audacity.

    Backup and Sync from Google

    IDG

Even the most stalwart Mac fans have to admit that Google does photos better than Apple, despite Apple’s improvements over the years. While there ids no longer the unlimited free storage there once was, with instant syncing across virtually any device, and an amazing search engine, Google Photos is everything we wish Apple Photos would be. But you might not know that there’s a super easy way to get photos from your Mac into your Google Photos library. Google offers a small utility called Backup and Sync that will automatically upload images stored on your Mac. The simple menu bar app works with your Google Drive to continuously scan for images in folders of your choosing to keep your photo library in sync. And it’s so efficient, you won’t even know it’s working. But thats not all! Backup and Sync makes an extremely effective cloud storage solution for all file types. In fact, if you use more than just Apple gear, it’s probably the best cloud storage solution.

    Get Backup and Sync.

BBEdit – free HTML and text editor

    BBEdit

Professional software developers have been singing BBEdit’s praises for years, but you don’t need to spend a bundle to get on board. The free version of BBEdit is a full-featured editor in its own right, sporting powerful features such as multiple clipboards, automatic backups, live search and syntax-highlighting support for more than 20 programming languages. But you don’t have to be a Swift coder to appreciate it—anyone who writes and edits large chunks of text on their Mac should grab a copy.

    Download BBEdit.

Google Chrome – free web browser

    Foundry

The debate over which is the Bbst web browser for Mac is one that won’t be settled anytime soon, but in the meantime, every Mac user should have a copy of Chrome alongside Safari in their Dock. Fast, smart, and endlessly customizable, Google’s browser is an excellent alternative to Apple’s, with speedy surfing, smart syncing, and Google Assistant-style voice searches. And with a dedicated store filled with extensions and themes, finding ways to enhance it is way easier than it is on Safari. Google has even added some intelligence to Chrome on Mac with AI-based search tools in a Chrome for Mac update.

    Download Chrome.

    ClearVPN – free Mac VPN

    IDG

There are lots of VPN clients available for the Mac, but few of them are as straightforward and effortless as ClearVPN, which has a free plan. Rather than let you choose from a complicated list of servers, ClearVPN’s straightforward interface will automatically route you to the best option based on what you want to do, whether it’s private browsing or watching Netflix outside the U.S. Everything else happens in the background—protocols, servers, and encryption are handled in real-time using MacPaw’s Dynamic Flow Technology that automatically selects the best server for your needs. Heavy users will want to subscribe for a month, but the free plan—which offers few shortcuts including Netflix streaming and ad-free browsing—is a great addition to any Mac. Read our review of ClearVPN for more information.

    Download ClearVPN.

Duplicate File Finder – free duplicate file remover

    IDG

If you’ve been using your Mac for a while, there’s a good chance you have accumulated duplicate files along the way. And some of them could be eating up precious space on your drive. You could run a full disk cleaner to find and root them out, but if you want to quickly find double files and get on with your day, make space for Duplicate File Finder in your Applications folder. Simply drag a folder onto its window and within seconds you’ll have a full report of the duplicates on your machine, letting you see what they are and where they’re hiding, and letting you delete them in a snap. Unless you opt for the pro version, you’ll have to deal with the occasional ad, but it’s an indispensable tool nonetheless. Duplicate File Finder is part of MacCleaner Pro, which features in our Best Mac Cleaner roundup.

Get Duplicate File Finder from the Mac App Store or Nektony.

Foxit PDF Reader – Free PDF reader

    Foundry

The app also packs some handy customization features, such as support for changing the document’s background shade, reversing and rotating pages, signing forms, and more. Beyond tweaking the PDF file, this Mac app can read the text aloud, measure distances, calculate areas, magnify selected spots, and have AI analyze your document. It’s certainly more capable than Apple’s Preview app and most free PDF readers we’ve used.

See how Foxit PDF Editor compares to other PDF tools in our round-up of the Best PDF editor for Mac.

With professional features, powerful collaboration, and tremendous cross-platform versatility, Apple’s office suite of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with apps sporting much higher price tags. Get Pages, Numbers, and Keynote from the Mac App Store.

We look at the best free photo editing apps for Mac separately.

Download Polarr Photo Editor from the Mac App Store.

    Raycast – free shortcut app

    Foundry

While Apple’s Spotlight technology tends to do a good job of quickly finding files of all kinds via its indexed, system-wide search engine, Raycast may just do it better. Raycast, developed by Raycast Technologies, functions as a quick, on-the-fly application launcher, wherein you can quickly access files by typing in a few keywords, tell Raycast what function to perform, and then let Raycast go to work. Download Raycast.

Shazam – free music recognition app

    IDG

It does the same thing—identify songs that it hears and direct you to where you can buy them—but on the Mac it’s always listening for music. And as soon as the Shazam app hears a song, it’ll identify it for you, whether it’s played on your Mac or somewhere else in the room. It also makes an excellent podcast directory and player. IDG

Video formats are constantly changing, and you no doubt have all sorts of movie files littering your Mac’s drive. There’s not all that much to it—it basically mimics the web interface in a floating window—but it’ll sync your chats so you don’t have to reach for your phone every time you want to read or respond to a message. You will, however, need to have your phone within range and connected to Wi-Fi, and you won’t be able to make calls, but if you’re a chromic Whatsapper, it’s a must-have. Raycast, developed by Raycast Technologies, functions as a quick, on-the-fly application launcher, wherein you can quickly access files by typing in a few keywords, tell Raycast what function to perform, and then let Raycast go to work. While you’ll need to permit Raycast to search through local drives the first time using it, the program is intuitive, simple, and, for many people, everything they wish Apple’s Spotlight technology could be. Download Raycast. Shazam – free music recognition app IDG We all know how great the Shazam app is on our phones, but it might be even better on the Mac. It does the same thing—identify songs that it hears and direct you to where you can buy them—but on the Mac it’s always listening for music. And as soon as the Shazam app hears a song, it’ll identify it for you, whether it’s played on your Mac or somewhere else in the room. And now that Apple owns Shazam, It’s kind of like a peek at what is almost certain to be a future macOS feature that you can play with right now. Get Shazam from the Mac App Store. Simplenote – free note taking app IDG Don’t let Simplenote’s name fool you—the only thing simple about it is the decision to download it. No matter how or what you write, Simplenote promises to fit neatly into your workflow, with a syncing and organizational system that rivals the most powerful note-takers around. It’s so good, you might not want to turn it off at the end of the work day. Download Slack. It works with Gmail, iCloud, Outlook, and just about any other email address, and its companion iOS apps will keep all of them perfectly synced. With a deceptively powerful interface and a slew of advanced features, Spark just might ignite your passion for email again. Or at least make you not hate it as much. Download Spark from the Mac App Store. Spotify – free music streamer IDG Apple Music might come free with every new Mac, but unless you subscribe for a month, it’s kinda useless for listening to anything other than your purchased music. That’s not the case with the Spotify app. Whether you’re a premium subscriber or a free one, the Spotify app for the Mac is chock full of tunes to get you through your workday. It also makes an excellent podcast directory and player. Just like the iPhone app, you can listen to anything you want with two limitations: shuffle mode is always on and visual and audio ads occasionally pop up. Download Spotify. VLC media player – free media player IDG Video formats are constantly changing, and you no doubt have all sorts of movie files littering your Mac’s drive. But if they haven’t been encoded in 64-bit or MPEG, QuickTime might not be able to play them. That’s where VLC comes in. Open-source and omnipotent, the media player will play, stream, or convert just about any video format you can throw at it, while sporting a clean, minimal interface that strips away unnecessary controls and puts the focus on the content. It’s so good, you might forget it didn’t cost you anything. Download VLC. The Unarchiver – free unzipper ZIPs and RARs might not be as prevalent as they were when the Mac operating system was named after big cats, but if you still have expanding and extracting needs, The Unarchiver’s immediate and inconspicuous processing will help you quickly get at the files hidden inside. You can even download a helper app that will put your Mac to sleep until the alarm is ready to go off—because machines need some down time too.  Get Wake Up Time from the Mac App Store. WhatsApp Desktop – free text messaging WhatsApp If you send a lot of WhatsApp messages, you need to get WhatsApp Desktop on your Mac. 26 free macOS apps every Mac user should have
Macworld There’s something of a misconception when it comes to the Mac: that Mac apps cost more, just like the computer itself. Amphetamine – free anti-sleep app Foundry Amphetamine will keep your Mac awake. Featuring a menu bar-based interface, the app lets you temporarily override your Mac’s sleep schedule (even when your MacBooks’s lid is closed) and even adds a few useful features like activating only when connected to specific Wi-Fi networks and keeping only certain drives awake. Download Amphetamine. Audacity – free audio editor IDG Amateur Mac recording engineers have known about the power of Audacity for years. Backup and Sync from Google IDG Even the most stalwart Mac fans have to admit that Google does photos better than Apple, despite Apple’s improvements over the years. BBEdit – free HTML and text editor BBEdit Professional software developers have been singing BBEdit’s praises for years, but you don’t need to spend a bundle to get on board. Google Chrome – free web browser Foundry The debate over which is the Bbst web browser for Mac is one that won’t be settled anytime soon, but in the meantime, every Mac user should have a copy of Chrome alongside Safari in their Dock. ClearVPN – free Mac VPN IDG There are lots of VPN clients available for the Mac, but few of them are as straightforward and effortless as ClearVPN, which has a free plan. Heavy users will want to subscribe for $13 a month, but the free plan—which offers few shortcuts including Netflix streaming and ad-free browsing—is a great addition to any Mac. Read our review of ClearVPN for more information. Download ClearVPN. Duplicate File Finder – free duplicate file remover IDG If you’ve been using your Mac for a while, there’s a good chance you have accumulated duplicate files along the way. Unless you opt for the $5 pro version, you’ll have to deal with the occasional ad, but it’s an indispensable tool nonetheless. Duplicate File Finder is part of MacCleaner Pro, which features in our Best Mac Cleaner roundup. Get Duplicate File Finder from the Mac App Store or Nektony. Foxit PDF Reader – Free PDF reader Foundry Foxit PDF Reader is a free document viewer that supports advanced annotation tools. This lets you control the size, color, and style of inserted text or shapes. Get Foxit PDF Reader. GarageBand – Apple’s music maker IDG If you want to make music on your Mac there’s no better place to start than GarageBand. Loaded with loads of instruments, sounds, loops, and beats, GarageBand will help you make killer tracks whether they’re bound for a stage, screen, or just your ringtone. And in true Apple fashion, its interface is drop-dead simple, letting you record, scrub, and mix just by dragging and dropping. You can use real instruments or virtual ones, and an array of pre-recorded tracks and samples will let you compose a great song even of you can’t hold a tune. And if you’re clueless about where to begin, there are even a couple piano and guitar lessons to get you started. Get GarageBand from Apple. Grammarly – free grammar and spelling checker IDG Spell-check on our iPhone is awesome, but it’s not so great on our Mac. That’s where Grammarly comes in. Available as a Mac app or a Safari extension, it adds a powerful spelling and grammar engine to Gmail, Facebook, Twitter, or anywhere else you type words. (It even works in our CMS, which is why this blurb is free of errors.) Easy to use and basically restriction-free for most people, Grammarly will be a lifesaver for anyone with clumsy typing fingers—especially if you’re stuck using one of the problematic MacBook keyboards. Get Grammarly from the Mac App Store. IINA – free Mac media player IDG While VLC (above) will always have a place on our Mac, IINA is making a strong case for supremacy. Its sleek, minimal design makes it feel like a fresh and modern video player, while features like dark mode and picture-in-picture put VLC to shame. But IINA’s best feature is its uncanny ability to play basically any file type you throw at it, from years-old local files to YouTube playlists. Plus, it’s written in Swift and open-source, so you can bet the features—including native M1 Mac support—will keep on coming. Download IINA. Kindle – free book reader IDG Sometimes you just want to curl up with your Mac and read a good book. With the Kindle app for Mac you can do just that. Like iBooks, but for all of your Kindle books, comics, and Kindle Unlimited subscriptions, you’ll be able to access all fo your Amazon.com purchases  right on your desktop. With a full-screen mode, five font options, a dark theme, and adjustable point sizes, brightness, and page widths, you can customize your reading experience just the way you like it. There’s also a built-in dictionary and easy annotating, and Amazon’s Whispersync tech will let you pick up right where you left off on any device. Except, you know, from an actual book. Download Amazon’s Kindle app for Mac from the Mac App Store. Onyx – free Mac cleaner IDG Mac maintenance might not be as vital to the day-to-day operation of your Mac as it once was, but slowdowns still happen. And when they do, Onyx will clear them up. A general-purpose utility with more tools than a Swiss Army knife, Onyx packages maintenance scripts, cache cleaning, and permissions repairers to keep your Mac in tip-top shape. Its simple interface makes it quick and painless to run all kinds of cleaning solutions, but its best feature might be the individual optimized versions Titanium Software offers, going way back. Onyx is one of a number of Mac cleaners we review in our Best Mac Cleaners group test. Read our review of Onyx. Another free Mac cleaner worth a look is Piriform Software’s CCleaner. Download Onyx. Pages/Numbers/Keynote – the free office apps on every Mac Foundry Apple’s productivity suite has been a benefit to new Mac buyers for years, but now everyone can get them. Previously available for $20 apiece, for a while now they have all been free, and you won’t find a better set of tools without opening your wallet. With professional features, powerful collaboration, and tremendous cross-platform versatility, Apple’s office suite of Pages, Numbers, and Keynote can stand shoulder-to-shoulder with apps sporting much higher price tags. Things like Touch ID protection and real-time tracking belie its free status, and of course, there are iOS companion apps that are also free so you can work wherever you are. And don’t worry if you have a mountain of Word, Excel, or PowerPoint files—it’ll work with those, too. Get Pages, Numbers, and Keynote from the Mac App Store. • Epic Games is trying to scheme its way back into the App Store, and it might just work

If there’s one constant in the lustrum-long Epic Games v. Apple lawsuit, it’s that Tim Sweeney, Epic’s CEO, tends to… get creative when it comes to publicly interpreting and promoting the company’s legal wins.
Late last Friday, Epic once again tried to spin a limited courtroom victory into a public-relations campaign. Now, it has been granted a chance to make the antics fly in court.

    I am shocked, shocked!
In a sense, the entire Epic Games v. Apple case was built on a bit of theater. Epic already knew it would get kicked out of the App Store and Google’s Play Store if it released a Fortnite update with a hidden, server-side activated, parallel IAP system, and it did so anyway.
Not only that, but court documents showed that Epic had the entire lawsuit and Free Fortnite campaign ready to go beforehand. The stunt was codenamed Project Liberty.
Swag made in advance for Fortnite’s totally unexpected rejection on the App Store and Play Store
In fact, this willing breach of the stores’ terms partly contributed to District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers’ decision to leave Fortnite’s reinstatement up to Apple’s discretion.
Take the wins, tweak the wins
Days after the initial court ruling, Sweeney publicly accused Apple of lying about its willingness to reinstate Fortnite if Epic agreed to follow the same rules as other developers.
He claimed Epic was ready to comply, but Apple still refused to restore Fortnite on iOS. An act he called “abuse of monopoly power over a billion users.”
The problem was that Sweeney’s own correspondence with Apple showed that Epic’s offer to “play by the rules” came with conditions:

Epic will resubmit Fortnite to the App Store if you adhere to the plain language of the court order and allow apps to include buttons and external links that direct customers to other purchasing mechanisms without onerous terms or impediments to a good user experience.

Standing alone, the request looks perfectly reasonable. But in context, it reads more like a calculated PR move, meant to give Epic the appearance of leverage and control it didn’t actually have.
In the months and years that followed, through appeals, interviews, and public statements, Sweeney consistently framed the lawsuits as decisive victories or proof of Apple’s and Google’s wrongdoing, even when courts largely sided with the platforms and declined to label them as illegal monopolists.
Which brings us to the fruits of Friday’s motion filed by Epic.
New hearing scheduled for May 27th
A few minutes ago, Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers formally granted Epic its day in court, again.
In a Order to Show Cause, she signaled she’s running out of patience, and reminded Apple that it never received a stay from the Ninth Circuit after her April 30 ruling. She also emphasized that the company is “fully capable of resolving this issue without further briefing or a hearing.”
In a nutshell, the court ordered that the Apple official “personally responsible for ensuring compliance” must appear in person if the two companies don’t resolve the matter before the hearing.
As ever, Epic certainly won’t miss the opportunity to turn this sliver of procedural progress into a broader narrative about platform abuse and user freedom. If that will also fly with the Judge, we’ll find out soon enough.

  • Mailbox: Switch 2 Innovations, Localisation Dreams, "That Big Playtest Thing" - Nintendo Life Letters

Image: Nintendo LifeAssuming the postie doesn't deprive us on launch day, we're less than three weeks away from having a brand new Nintendo console in our hands! This 24th edition of the Nintendo Life Mailbox will be the final spread with the original Switch as Nintendo's flagship console!
Yes, we've been rifling through our inbox and publishing select contents in our monthly letters page for a whole two years now, and we'll be back next month with an entirely different console sitting on the desk. And, presumably, a whole pile of Switch 2-related correspondence to sort through.
It's a busy time in Nintendo land, so let's crack on. Got something you want to get off your chest? We're ready and waiting to read about your game-related ponderings.
Each month we’ll highlight a Star Letter, the writer of which will receive a month’s subscription to our ad-free Supporter scheme. Check out the submission guidelines at the bottom of this page.
Let's sit back with a warm beverage and go through our dispatch box...
Nintendo Life Mailbox - May 2025
"Smells like...electronic...raspberries." — Image: Zion Grassl / Nintendo Life
"for those who want it"What are your thoughts on the innovations of Switch 2 in relation to generations past? Nintendo's gimmicks have historically proven to be hit and miss, but I see a shift ever since the Switch launched in 2017. Sure, it still had the IR sensor but hybrid gaming and gyro aimingwere legitimate forward progressions, and Switch 2 seems to offer even more legitimate innovation with both gameshare and mouse mode. I foresee both of these features becoming permanent fixtures in future consoles, and much like gyro aiming, changing the way we engage with video games.
I truly believe mouse mode is something gamers will never want to give up once they've experienced it's benefits. Thoughts?
    JaxonH
More and different ways to play are exciting, especially if they're built into the hardware. For me, Drag x Drive was one of the highlights of the Switch 2 event at the start of April. I'm all for mouse mode options, whether they're cute and complementary or integral to a game, but it's on Nintendo to make it indispensable. The tech is certainly cheap enough to integrate into any Joy-Con-style controller from now on.
I'm not convinced it's going to fundamentally change how we approach gaming, though. Will Mouse Mode be comfortable for multiple hours? They work like mice, sure, but ergonomically, that's not their main function. I also remember thinking every pad would have a built-in pointer after the Wiimote. It's affordable, intuitive tech, so why not include that option? And yet we live in a world where the Xbox pad still doesn't have gyro. - Ed.
    "out of the running"

I recently finished Ace Attorney Investigations 2 on Switch, and wow, what a ride! I’m so happy it finally got localized for the West, even if it did take 13 years.
Got me thinking about other games that haven’t seen the light of day outside Japan. Yes, there are some obvious frontrunners like Mother 3 and Dragon Quest 10 that I’m sure we all would love to see get localized, but I’m talking more about lesser-known gems. As a big fan of adventure games, that new Tokimeki Memorial remaster caught my eye, but unfortunately I’m no Japanese speaker at this stage, so I guess that puts me out of the running for now. I’m also still waiting for Yo-kai Watch 4, as well as my pipe dream Starfy 1-4 localizations…

How about you all? Any Japan-exclusives you’ve been eager to see come West?
    BandeeOfTheStars

I wrote a little feature back in 2020 on the subject, and looking at it now, I'd probably take Marvelous above anything else at this stage. I've never gotten around to playing the fan patch. Team? - Ed.

"I'd love to see Square's last Super Famicom game, Treasure of the Rudras, get a rerelease. I've heard so many good things about the creativity of this one, but at this point, given the complicated magic system, this might be an impossible dream." - Alana
"I’ll go for Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem. We’ve missed out on a lot of Fire Emblem games in the West, but this 2010 DS remake not coming our way always stings the most. The series is big enough now that surely Intelligent Systems could get away with releasing a bundle, right?" - Jim

Nintendo games that never officially left Japan

Forever with you; never with us

    "special kudos"

Is Nintendo Life planning to do full/short reviews to Switch 2 Edition games? It would be great to decide which upgrades are worth it.

Congratulations to all on the Switch 2 news coverage with special kudos to Alex, Felix and Zion! Love to watch their discussion videos.
    RenanKJ

Thank you, Renan - I've passed on the message to the video chaps! One sent me a teary-eyed smiling emoji as a reply.
Yes, we will be reviewing all the major NS2 Editions, with the upgrades and additions being the main focus. Whether they'll be full or mini will be a case-by-case thing. - Ed.
    "mildly disappointed"

    Hi,

I am mildly disappointed in the game chat feature for Switch 2 because I normally play games alone, with friends in person, or on the NintendoLife discord; Plus, it records you. So, I'll probably never use it. But, since they're bringing back Download Play, which is my favorite feature, they should bring back another DS feature PictoChat.
    OswaldTheLuckyGamer
It's a strange one - ever since writing a little thing about GameChat, the idea has been slowly growing on me, despite news that it's hogging system resources and, you know, it's just video chat. We'll see how it works, but I do have plans to conduct NL staff meetings over GameChat.

Moderating anatomically exaggerated doodles is something Nintendo never wants to do again, so I don't see Pictochat returning. But StreetPass is theDS feature we really need, Oswald. StreetPass! - Ed.
Image: Zion Grassl / Nintendo Life
    "that big playtest thing"

With all the leaks and news of lawsuits coming out I just thought about one thing: Whatever happened to that big playtest thing everyone had to be quiet about or face the Ninty ninja's? I actually never saw footage of it, so I'm guessing it never truly leaked?
What do you guys think about it now that we have the new system in our paws soon? What was it made for, did we already see that or is something still in the works?
    garfreek

Testing it on Switch 1 suggests it will be a cross-platform thing, whatever it ends up being. There was nothing in it that suggested the power of Switch 2 was needed to realise its ultimate potential.
It'll be coming. Whether anybody's really bothered is the bigger question. - Ed.

    Bonus Letters

"Regarding a potential Switch 2 Lite, Nintendo has not officially announced such a version." - Trinny G

This is true. Aside: If you're in the market for a brand-new Switch Lite, now's the time to be looking for a bargain! - Ed.

"I think we’re all missing the true potential of the Switch 2 microphone: Odama 2" - Munchlax

Pff. It's panpipe time. - Ed.
    Image: Nintendo Life

That's all for this month! Thanks to everyone who wrote in, whether you were featured above or not.
Got something you'd like to get off your chest? A burning question you need answered? A correction you can't contain? Follow the instructions below, then, and we look forward to rifling through your missives.
Nintendo Life Mailbox submission advice and guidelines

Mailbox: Switch 2 Innovations, Localisation Dreams, "That Big Playtest Thing" - Nintendo Life Letters
Nintendo Life Mailbox - May 2025 "Smells like...electronic...raspberries." — Image: Zion Grassl / Nintendo Life "for those who want it"What are your thoughts on the innovations of Switch 2 in relation to generations past? Nintendo's gimmicks have historically proven to be hit and miss, but I see a shift ever since the Switch launched in 2017. Sure, it still had the IR sensor but hybrid gaming and gyro aimingwere legitimate forward progressions, and Switch 2 seems to offer even more legitimate innovation with both gameshare and mouse mode. I foresee both of these features becoming permanent fixtures in future consoles, and much like gyro aiming, changing the way we engage with video games. I truly believe mouse mode is something gamers will never want to give up once they've experienced it's benefits. Thoughts? JaxonH More and different ways to play are exciting, especially if they're built into the hardware. - Ed. "out of the running" I recently finished Ace Attorney Investigations 2 on Switch, and wow, what a ride! I’m also still waiting for Yo-kai Watch 4, as well as my pipe dream Starfy 1-4 localizations… How about you all? Any Japan-exclusives you’ve been eager to see come West? BandeeOfTheStars I wrote a little feature back in 2020 on the subject, and looking at it now, I'd probably take Marvelous above anything else at this stage. I've never gotten around to playing the fan patch. Team? - Ed. "I'd love to see Square's last Super Famicom game, Treasure of the Rudras, get a rerelease. I've heard so many good things about the creativity of this one, but at this point, given the complicated magic system, this might be an impossible dream." - Alana "I’ll go for Fire Emblem: New Mystery of the Emblem. We’ve missed out on a lot of Fire Emblem games in the West, but this 2010 DS remake not coming our way always stings the most. The series is big enough now that surely Intelligent Systems could get away with releasing a bundle, right?" - Jim Image: Zion Grassl / Nintendo Life Nintendo games that never officially left Japan Forever with you; never with us "special kudos" Is Nintendo Life planning to do full/short reviews to Switch 2 Edition games? It would be great to decide which upgrades are worth it. Congratulations to all on the Switch 2 news coverage with special kudos to Alex, Felix and Zion! Love to watch their discussion videos. RenanKJ Thank you, Renan - I've passed on the message to the video chaps! One sent me a teary-eyed smiling emoji as a reply. Yes, we will be reviewing all the major NS2 Editions, with the upgrades and additions being the main focus. Whether they'll be full or mini will be a case-by-case thing. - Ed. "mildly disappointed" Hi, I am mildly disappointed in the game chat feature for Switch 2 because I normally play games alone, with friends in person, or on the NintendoLife discord; Plus, it records you. So, I'll probably never use it. But, since they're bringing back Download Play, which is my favorite feature, they should bring back another DS feature PictoChat. OswaldTheLuckyGamer It's a strange one - ever since writing a little thing about GameChat, the idea has been slowly growing on me, despite news that it's hogging system resources and, you know, it's just video chat. We'll see how it works, but I do have plans to conduct NL staff meetings over GameChat. Moderating anatomically exaggerated doodles is something Nintendo never wants to do again, so I don't see Pictochat returning. But StreetPass is theDS feature we really need, Oswald. StreetPass! - Ed. Image: Zion Grassl / Nintendo Life "that big playtest thing" With all the leaks and news of lawsuits coming out I just thought about one thing: Whatever happened to that big playtest thing everyone had to be quiet about or face the Ninty ninja's? I actually never saw footage of it, so I'm guessing it never truly leaked? What do you guys think about it now that we have the new system in our paws soon? What was it made for, did we already see that or is something still in the works? garfreek Testing it on Switch 1 suggests it will be a cross-platform thing, whatever it ends up being. There was nothing in it that suggested the power of Switch 2 was needed to realise its ultimate potential. It'll be coming. Whether anybody's really bothered is the bigger question. - Ed. Bonus Letters "Regarding a potential Switch 2 Lite, Nintendo has not officially announced such a version." - Trinny G This is true. Aside: If you're in the market for a brand-new Switch Lite, now's the time to be looking for a bargain! - Ed. "I think we’re all missing the true potential of the Switch 2 microphone: Odama 2" - Munchlax Pff. It's panpipe time. - Ed. Image: Nintendo Life That's all for this month!
