• Danganronpa fans are at it again, proving that the only thing more persistent than their love for a dead series is their ability to implode over a single mysterious tease. Remember when Spike Chunsoft wrapped up the murder mystery saga with a decisive nod to letting art die with dignity? Well, four years later, it seems dignity is out the window, and speculation is in! Who needs closure when you can have endless theories and fan debates that make you question your sanity? It’s like watching a soap opera where the plot twists never end, just with more despair and less soap. Can't wait for the next clue that sends everyone into a frenzy—because who doesn’t love a good existential crisis?

  • Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (31st May)

    Seven days

It's basically good in all possible ways

I guess you could say I "yearn for the mines" now

    Jim Norman, Staff Writer
The weather is looking good this weekend and next week promises a lot of gaming, so I'm planning to take it easy on the playtime front. Old Skies has got me back on a point-and-click hit, and I have some train journeys to make, so I might crack out Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars on GBA to keep me going through the inevitable delays and jam-packed services.

But otherwise, a bit of sun, a bit of BBQ, and a bit of constantly checking my bank account for confirmation that my Switch 2 payment has finally been taken.
    Ollie Reynolds, Staff Writer
I’m still tinkering with The Hundred Line here and there, but I must admit that with the Switch 2 mere days away at this point, I’m spending a bit less time gaming in general at the moment; just to give myself a bit of breathing space before the avalanche hits.
I read a lot though, so at the moment, I’ve got two books on the go: Michael Crichton’s Jurassic Parkand The Road to Jonestown by Jeff Guinn on my Kindle. I find a nice combination of fiction and non-fiction is the way to go most of the time! Have a good one, folks.

It really happened last weekend: Closure for a story that was left unfinished a decade ago. Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition is most certainly one of my desert island games, and the possibility of a proper sequel is just too sweet to ignore. After all, Monolith has been quietly working on something these past years, right?

My physical Mobile Suit Gundam SEED: Battle Destiny Remastered copy arrived, and since I never owned the game on Vita, this is all-new content for yours truly. Other physical copies arriving include the amazing Star Overdrive and the SEGA Dreamcast-fuelled extravaganza known as Capcom Fighting Collection 2. This could very well be the best Capcom compilation yet, my arcade stick will surely see a lot of action this weekend.
My game of the week is… the waiting game! For these past few weeks, and to ensure that all goes smoothly on the 5th, I have executed my plan to the letter. The new TV is hooked up and ready for the arrival of the Switch 2. If my next week’s entry is just me pasting “Mario Kart World!!!” repeatedly, you will know it all worked out.
    Alana Hagues, Deputy Editor
I caved in. I have Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time ready to… steal my time. The Switch 2 version launching next week pushed me over the edge. Confession: I never played the 3DS game, so this will be my first taste of Fantasy Life, which honestly sounds like a combination of things made specifically for me.

The other thing Fantasy Life will steal time fromis Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, which I’ve just started and I’m having a blast. If the weather is nice where you are, get out there, because next weekend, many of us will have a Switch 2 in hand, and sunshine is the last thing we’ll want. Enjoy!

I'm playing Fantasy Life i like my life depends on it. Which, in a way, it does. Because it's about Lives. Do you get it? DO YOU? DO YOUUUU????
On the opposite end of the cheerful/morose spectrum, I finished Expedition 33, but it's such a delightful game that I don't want to leave. Luckily, there's TONS of post-ending content to mop up like a greedy little child licking gravy off the plate, and a New Game+, although that's a significant investment when I have so many other games to play. However, I know that all the dialogue and scenes that baffled me in my first playthroughwill gain new and horrifying meaning in a second playthrough, plus I'll get to keep all my hard-earned Pictos...

...but I really should get around to playing Hundred Line. Uchikoshi and Kodaka? Zero Escape and Danganronpa? It's a wonder I haven't played it yet. I love a murder game!

This time next week, Mario Kart World will be old news and we'll be bleary-eyed and knee-deep in Knockout Tours. So, before the excitement of a new console launch, I'm looking to chill the beans way, way down. As I have over the past few weeks, I'll be hitting 51 Clubhouse Games with the kids once more, but I also intend to finally tuck into to Thank Goodness You're Here, a game I don't think the 4K output of the Switch 2 will improve. Have a great one, everyone - we'll speak again when the next generation has arrived.

Warning: This article delves into spoiler territory for The Hundred Line - Last Defense Academy. If you've yet to play the game and want to go in blind, we recommend you come back at another time...

I’m not a fan of tactical RPGs… is what I would have told you before I played The Hundred Line - Last Defense Academy. Heck, I’m still not sure I would call myself a 'fan' of the genre, necessarily; one game perhaps isn’t enough to sway me that much. The Hundred Line, though..? Yeah, I’m a fan of The Hundred Line.Subscribe to Nintendo Life on YouTube814kWatch on YouTube
In fact, it's easily my Game of the Year so far, and even with the Switch 2 on the horizon, it’s going to take something truly special to usurp its throne. Mitch gave it an 'Excellent' 9/10 in our review, but what he didn’t cover – what he couldn’t cover without spoiling anything – is just how ridiculously ambitious Too Kyo Games’ visual novel / tactical RPG hybrid really is.
So, if you’re sensitive about spoilers and want to go into this one completely fresh, consider this your last warning. We’re going in, folks.
Images: Nintendo Life / Aniplex / XSEED Games
Before I waltz headfirst into what is undoubtedly The Big Twist™, I want to first look at the wonderful cast of characters. Much like Danganronpa before it, the entire premise of The Hundred Line — survive and protect your school against invaders over the course of one hundred days — would have crashed and burned were it not for the likes of Takumi Sumino, Darumi Amemiya, Shouma Ginzaki, Nozomi Kirifuji, and the rest of those loveable goofballs.
Character work is truly where directors Kazutaka Kodaka and Kotaro Uchikoshi shine brightest. They managed to make every member of the 'Special Defense Unit' completely unique and special in their own way.
Take Tsubasa Kawana, for instance. Whenever she’s placed in a stressful situation, she immediately feels nauseous, and it makes for some wonderful comedic relief. I lost count of the number of times I giggled whenever the story took a dark turn, and the camera switched over to Tsubasa loudly dry heaving.
In addition to the comic relief, however, we also learn a lot about Tsubasa’s background, including her passion for machinery fostered by fixing cars with her grandfather as a child. We get similar deep dives into every character, to the point where we begin to understand the potential causes behind their various quirks. Even total prats like Ima Tsukumo, whose obsessive devotion to his ‘Dear Sister’ Kako proves deeply concerning, gets his own moment of redemption through both his backstory and the way the plot progresses.
By the time I reached the credits, I really didn’t want the game to end. I’d grown to love these characters, and a couple of significant losses actually brought a tear to my eye during the final stages; something that no game before it has accomplished. Couldn’t I just keep going? Just for a bit..?
Well, here’s the thing: it didn’t end.
When you reach the last couple of days in the basic hundred-day timeline, you learn that through powers gained via absorption of your enemies, protagonist Takumi can actually go back in time to day one and re-do the whole thing again. Only this time, you’re free to make significant changes to the story and work your way toward one of a potential hundred different endings. Whoa – hold my beer, Nier Automata!
Image: Nintendo Life / Aniplex / XSEED Games

I know what you’re probably thinking, and no, you don’t have to play through the entire game a hundred times. Effectively, the story can branch off into several different paths, each of which has a number of potential endings, and the game even gives you the ability to jump back to specific days in order to change your decisions and alter the story’s path.
Some endings may be exceedingly short, others a bit lengthier… some good, and some very bad. One might see you become the villain of the story, while another may conclude with the adorably loyal samurai Kyoshika Magadori being devoured by your zombified friends. The variety of avenues is simply absurd, and discovering each one is a joy.
These are just a couple of the more, shall we say, ‘insignificant’ possible endings. I won’t go into those which might actually spoil the overarching plot; even if you’re still with me at this point, I’d like you to enjoy The Hundred Line’s story on your own terms. It’s safe to say, however, that the run through those initial one hundred days could definitely be considered a ‘prologue’, even though it comfortably stands as a compelling story in its own right with a beginning, middle, and end.
Images: Nintendo Life / Aniplex / XSEED Games
So you can definitely stop there and have a grand ol’ time, but if you’re looking for something a bit more ambitious — something that throws the rulebook out of the window — I’d encourage you to keep going and see exactly what The Hundred Line has up its sleeve. It’s simply magnificent.
There are so many reasons why I love this game. I love figuring out what to do during ‘free time’ sessions in which you can either chat to your fellow students, venture out into the world in a board-game-inspired minigame of sorts, or dive straight into a few battle simulations to potentially upgrade your abilities.
The biggest surprise for me, however, was how much I loved the battle system itself. As I mentioned at the start, I’m normally not one for tactical RPGs, but The Hundred Line’s turn-based structure just works so well. I often get overwhelmed when it comes to deciding how to approach tactical gameplay: how do these characters function? Why can’t I move more than two spaces? Just what the heck do I do?
The Hundred Line made it easy, though, and it’s once again thanks to the remarkably unique and diverse cast. Their artistic design makes it easy to distinguish one from another, and it only took a couple of battles until I memorised their strengths and weaknesses, along with how their attacks play out on the field of battle. It got to the point where, after a handful of quiet days full of ‘free time’, the warbling alarm to signify an incoming battle filled me with excitement.
Images: Nintendo Life / Aniplex / XSEED Games
Most of the battles felt doable and I never felt completely helpless against the hordes of invaders, but there were still a few that I managed to botch straight away and lose within just a few minutes. In those instances, the game gives you the option to redo the battle with significant boosts to your manpower, instantly giving you 300% 'voltage'and refilling your squad's health. Is it cheating? Sure, I guess... But it also makes the game significantly more approachable for tactical newcomers like myself.
I adore the Danganronpa series. I think they’re wonderful games that remain just as compelling now as they were back when they first launched, and if it weren’t for Danganronpa, I don’t think The Hundred Line would even exist. I have to be honest with myself, though… The Hundred Line is better. It’s a masterpiece.
Co-director Kazutaka Kodaka has recently confirmed that the game is "selling well", but I still feel like not enough people are talking about it. I suspect, however, that as the years go by and more people play it through word of mouth, it’ll go down as one of the greatest visual novels of all time. There’s simply nothing else quite like it.

Have you played through The Hundred Line - Last Defense Academy yet? What do you make of it? Do you have a favourite character / ending? Let us know with a comment in the usual place.

One day after Hundred Line's release, we visited Too Kyo Games, the studio led by Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka, in addition to his Spike Chunsoft fellow creators Kotaro Uchikoshi, Masafumi Takada and Rui Komatsuzaki.

The Hundred Line: Last Defense Academy is the studio's first fully-owned and original IP, with the team taking a high risk on their studio's future in order to achieve a game with unprecedented volume, totaling 100 different endings and a scenario exceeding 6,000,000 Japanese characters.

I love how Masafumi Takada looks like a calm librarian with those glasses… yet his music is the antithesis of that!

But yeah this is a great video.

Haven't had the time yet, but I've heard of some pretty varied takes. From absolute cinema to god awful.

    Really makes me curious.

  • Danganronpa Creator's "Multi-Genre" Game Is Out September, And It Sounds Absolutely Wild

Will see it when it comes out. Multi genre means nothing these days. Everything wants to be a RPG with something or this and that.
Haven Call of the King and 'Freeformer' was a dumb marketing angle. The game was fair doing all these things with on foot, vehicle, space and more to then get their email address but even still. Was it worth it marketing or ambitions, not really. But I respect Travelers Tales efforts besides their other games too.
Also horror, point n click or visual novel and other aspects..... a theme and a few genres so close together..... How pathetic to do of marketing, marketing team.
The screenshots/trailer do not help. Oh so you have the uncovering clues of Danganronpa, you have the isometric camera in a stealth segment I assume, visual novel choices.... so standard stuff then. I get it's different tone, world, etc. but gameplay wise this still seems very them without being that far from what they already made. Some are different but not that different.
Also stealth isn't much it still fits the adventure/horror game formula weapons or not. Who are the marketers fooling here. XD There is a reason a puzzle game 2D or 3D to a shoot em up vehicle or controls or otherwise is a big dramatic change and most others of combat and gameplay in level design AREN'T. They still are genres but minor changes really.
Puzzle, shoot em up, tower defence is completely different. Who is making THAT game. No one clearly.
But are an adventure, dialogue boxes, platforming, stealth, 3rd person shooter, let alone any with outposts, other interactions with quests, pillaging, collecting, combat and more. Yeah tell me why genres mean only so much when only differ so slightly here?
When movesets are so generic these days and limiting of animations let alone use cases for enemies and level design. I hardly think anything matters. When Mario or other characters past or current have more moves then most human, animal, alien or other characters let alone personality in their worlds or level designin games to platform, power ups or core character, why would I think much of other games and you barely even need many of Mario's other moves. XD
I haven't played enough of Rain Code yet and I haven't bought or played Hundred Line at all. But they seem to be pumping these games out quick or however localisation to release happens I guess.
If it was like a mix of things like 2D, 3D, or puzzle then shoot em upor whatever then sure. Some complement for multi genre and are just minigames or core additions, so to me multi-genre is a complete marketing waste of wording. XD
You can have puzzles in any action game. You can minigames in any game. Who cares.
To me it looks fine like their past games, artstyles, etc. But to me it's not a lot to go on yet and seems like marketing fluff. They do make great games so it's not like I'm that confused, but to me this means nothing.
How they execute it, not hype it up.

I'm not sure if the entire story counts but a moment in Brothers: A tale of Two Sons cannot be accomplished outside of video games.

    Spoilers OK if marked?

999 on DS has you hooked until the last 10% or maybe even 5% of the game where the rug is literally pulled out from under you and you are forced to think about every action you as this external detached player character has made throughout the story seemingly while only acting out as the protaganist.

Gone Home is by rights a "spooky house and you're all on your own" story at first but it transforms into a beautiful story about youth, family and discovering one's true self.

Mario and Luigi Bowser's Inside Story explores what makes the big man tick. Like, literally.

Killer 7 on the outside and at the outset is a bonkers third person shoot-em-up and puzzle infused cel shaded action game but t's more a visual novel that's a really interesting character study of a person's personality. Or how it might become more than just singular.

RTS games by and large that try and categorise you as someone in-game never sat well with me. I quite liked being more of the invisible hand guiding the events or having the entire campaign come crashing down on me like it's that movie Downfall and I need to yell at everybody,

Semi-recently. I can't not mention 1000x Resist. I even was able to stomach voice acting in a video game for once. I'm as surprised as anybody.

    Play these games.

    Thank me later.

Didn't people like the Nier Automata anime? I haven't watched it but I heard it did a decent enough job. What about that story can only exist in a video game? I guess the final bit to an extent but if anything, I'd say the first Nier is a much better pick for that, given it's use of the NG+ mechanic.

Edit: Thinking about this list further, I think it's title is doing it a disservice. It should have just been "games that use game specific elements to enhance the narrative" or "narratives made better by being in a game" or something.

Its less the main narrative and everything else supporting it. Game mechanics given context in ways that are lost outside the medium.

The answer to that is a spoiler and it's also partly due to the fact you can literally come away from it having completely different interpretations of the story, and exactly how it was resolved, compared to another person.

I don't fully understand the over-arching thrust of the game's final act/ending but I also don't entirely mind that fact, either. Whereas in a standard three-act story you know what happened at least happened to the other people who experienced the same story as you.

As much as I love V3, I don't see why an anime would be impossible. The 1st twist can work with unreliable camera angles, and the 2nd twist doesn't really rely on being a video game at all.

I'm very familiar with Nier Automata, don't worry. It's just the anime I haven't seen. My point was the story seems to work outside the context of games, so the title of the list is a bit exaggerated.

It's a detective/cop story, but without the "Shift" element of the gameplay, it wouldn't be nearly as fun as it is. And I don't think it would be easily adaptable to other mediums, it works way better as a game

At some point you may get a feeling that you are not the hero of the story, as the game suggested at the start, and start feeling really bad by progressing it.

Maybe not CANNOT exist, but I don't think it would work anywhere near as well. It's a twist that is almost entirely predicated on the audience having agency in the story.

That's true but most games don't lean on the advantages of the medium and the story they tell is confined to be "cinematic".

I would add Blue Prince to the list. It's storytelling is wonderfully interactive.

Blue Prince is a good example, as the roguelike element is a canon part of the narrative.

So does this jsut mean games where they tell the story during gameplay or the fact that you are playing the MC enchances the story? Otherwise I don`t really understand why something like SotC or Inside is on the list? Does something like What Remains of Edith Finch count in that case?

Anyway. Here as some games with storytelling methods that only work in a game:

    Doki Doki Literature Club

Games like The Golden Idol series and the Rootrees Are Dead.

Maybe. But the thread and list is specifically asking for narratives that cannot exist outside of video games.

Persona, to some extent? The freeform nature of the social links and social skills is pretty video game specific. I do wish the main story would better reflect your social links and romances though.

I think there's nuance to any conversation like this, but I personally think a game like BioShock which engages directly with the idea that it is a game and the audience is actively controlling the characterqualifies for this discussion. At no point when you're watching a movie do you feel that you are controlling the protagonist. I'm sure there is a way to adapt the twist to a movie but it would need to be presented very differently to the point where the core message would probably be different.

The answer to that is a spoiler and it's also partly due to the fact you can literally come away from it having completely different interpretations of the story, and exactly how it was resolved, compared to another person.
