The 17th-century frescoes and antique mirrors should immediately tip visitors off: This showroom has something it needs to say. Palazzo Durini Caproni di Taliedo is a historic building in Milan, designed and built in the mid-1600s by Baroque architect Francesco Maria Richini. Among many other monumental works and churches, he also designed Milan’s Palazzo di Brera, which currently includes the Pinacoteca di Brera museum. The Palazzo Durini Caproni di Taliedo was commissioned by the heir to the Durinis, a wealthy merchant family.Today the palazzo is furniture showroom as palimpsest. Soccer sensation Ronaldo, who caused a near riot when he visited the palazzo during its Inter Football Club era, when the sports association’s offices were located here? Or could it be iconic designer Gio Ponti, who is said to have drawn that gilded Art Deco bathroom with green terrazzo floors in the back? One palazzo, so many lives. • Gironda Residence by Giovanni Mecozzi: The Renovation of Casa Guaccimanni in Ravenna

Gironda Residence | © Simone Bossi
Located just steps from Piazza del Popolo in Ravenna, the Renaissance-era Casa Guaccimanni holds centuries of architectural and historical weight. Constructed in the fifteenth century for the Venetian podestà Nicolò Giustinian, the building evolved through noble ownership and later became home to Vittorio and Alessandro Guaccimanni, sons of Risorgimento figure Luigi Guaccimanni. Architecturally, the structure is characterized by a tripartite plan with a central corridor flanked by large rooms, an interior courtyard with a double loggia, and decorative elements spanning Renaissance to Neoclassical periods. Once concealed beneath plaster, its frescoed veranda and exposed wooden ceilings speak to a layered history of intervention, concealment, and rediscovery.

Design Intent: Reversibility and Temporal Tension
The recent architectural project by Giovanni Mecozzi Architetti centers on the noble floor of the palazzo, reinterpreted as a contemporary residence named Gironda. Rather than imposing a new visual regime onto the historic shell, the intervention operates with restraint, foregrounding the building’s original character while establishing new spatial and material conditions.
At the core of the project lies a design philosophy rooted in reversibility. Mecozzi’s intervention resists permanence. The furnishings and spatial devices introduced into the historic rooms are self-supporting and detached from the structure. No new element makes physical contact with the floors, ceilings, or walls, preserving the integrity of the original surfaces. This strategy avoids irreversible alterations and allows the architecture to remain temporally flexible.
Architect Giovanni Mecozzi articulates this approach succinctly: “The new and the old never touch, but gently brush against each other, maintaining a distance capable of generating tension.” This spatial tension is not decorative but conceptual, prompting occupants to consider the relationship between historical continuity and contemporary transformation. The design does not attempt to erase time but rather exposes its layers through careful juxtaposition.
The project draws conceptual and chromatic inspiration from Ravenna’s early Christian and Byzantine mosaics. Rather than replicate ornamental motifs, Mecozzi extracts abstract qualities such as color, luminosity, and surface texture, integrating them as subtle spatial references throughout the residence.
    Gironda Residence Material Strategy
Access to the residence is organized through a longitudinal hallway that bisects the plan, connecting a balcony on the north façade with a loggia overlooking the garden to the south. This corridor becomes a spine for circulation and orientation, punctuated by entries into five main rooms: the kitchen, veranda, and three independent suites.
Each suite functions as a self-contained spatial environment. The original large rooms have been reimagined with integrated volumes housing diverse domestic functions: bathrooms, saunas, walk-in closets, reading nooks, and home cinemas. These new programmatic layers are embedded within freestanding furniture structures, which operate more as inhabitable objects than architectural partitions.
Color becomes an operative tool for spatial differentiation. The three principal suites, the Gold Room, the Blue Room, and the Green Room, are introduced chromatically through thresholds that face the main corridor. This prelude of color sets the tone for each room’s unique interior experience. Within, glossy glass tiles, gilded surfaces, and a reduced palette of materials establish a scenographic yet restrained environment.
The flooring, a Venetian terrazzo installed during earlier restoration work in the 2000s, has been retained. Its beveled borders and rounded corners respond to the proportions of each room, reinforcing a visual continuity that binds the new interventions with the inherited context. In contrast to the historical envelope, the furniture and spatial devices employ a language of monochromatic forms and minimal detailing, occasionally verging on neoplastic abstraction. This tension between old ornament and new abstraction is one of the project’s defining features.
Furnishings curated by Atelier Biagetti, known for their theatrical and ironic sensibility, further enrich the atmosphere. These pieces do not mimic the historical setting but create moments of visual friction and playful ambiguity, enhancing the multi-temporal character of the interiors.
    Architectural Significance and Cultural Dialogue
The Gironda residence exemplifies a growing discourse in contemporary architecture around adaptive reuse that neither mimics nor erases the past. Rather than treating heritage as a constraint or an aesthetic to be curated, Mecozzi engages it as an active agent in spatial transformation. The project is a case study in reversible architecture, where temporality is embedded in the design, not just its historical references.
This intervention prompts broader questions about the role of preservation in contemporary practice. Can architectural interventions occupy historic contexts without becoming parasitic or nostalgic? Mecozzi’s project suggests that they can adopt a posture of critical distance and conceptual clarity.
Gironda does not attempt to restore Casa Guaccimanni to a previous state or impose a singular vision of modernity. Instead, it crafts a dialogue between past and present, structured through spatial strategies, material choices, and chromatic cues. In doing so, it opens a new chapter in the building’s ongoing life, one that is fully contemporary yet deeply rooted in architectural memory.

  • Pokémon Go Machop Community Day guide

Pokémon Go is having a Machop Community Day event on Saturday, May 24, from 2-5 p.m. in your local time.

As expected with a Community Day event, Machop will spawn in huge numbers with a high chance for it to appear shiny in Pokémon Go. There are also several other bonuses and perks, which we’ve listed out below.

How do I catch a shiny Machop in Pokémon Go?

As per old research by the now-defunct website The Silph Road, Shiny rates on Community Days are about 1 in 24, which means that if you keep playing throughout the three-hour window, you should find quite a few shiny Pokémon.

If you’re short on time or Poké Balls, you can pop an Incense, then quickly tap each Machop to check for shiny ones, running from any that aren’t shiny. Notably, any Machop you’ve already tapped will face where your player is standing, so that should help identify which ones you may have already checked.

This is a great time to practice your quick catch, too, to max out your Machop Candy gains.

What Community Day move does Machop’s evolution learn?

If you evolve Machoke into Machamp from May 25 at 2 p.m. until May 31 at 10 p.m. in your local time, it will learn the charged move Payback.

If you miss out on evolving it during this period, you will likely be able to evolve it during a Community Day weekend event in December to get Payback. If you don’t want to wait, you can use an Elite TM to get the move.

How does Machamp do in the meta?

Whew, okay! Let’s talk about it. In short, Machamp is a powerhouse when it comes to PvE content. While yes, it does get outclassed by Legendaries, shadows, and Megas, it remains a really solid pick, ranking only below Lucario and Conkeldurr when you factor out those aforementioned categories.

I personally love using my powered-up Machamp to help me take out the Team Rocket leaders and Giovanni. While veteran players might shrug at the thought of a Machamp, this event is a great one for newer players who might not have that stuff yet.

This is all compounded with the fact that Machamp is getting its Gigantamax debut on May 25, literally the day after this Community Day event. That said, Gigantamax Machamp is the definitive fighting-type pick in Max Battles. So if you may want to hold off on powering up any of the Machamp you get on the Community Day and instead opt to power up the Gigantamax Machamp you can get the next day. That Gigantamax Machamp will be able to be used as a regular attacker in the various types of game content, so we recommend just powering up a Gigantamax one if you only have enough candy for one.Machamp’s best PvE moveset is Counter and Dynamic Punch, so you don’t have to worry about evolving it during the Community Day period or anything like that. Specifically, you’ll likely want your Gigantamax Machamp to use Low Kick instead of Counter, since it’s a shorter attack and thus grants more max energy.

For PvP, shadow Machamp actually isn’t a horrible choice, but you’ll want to set it up with Karate Chop, Cross Chop, and Stone Edge.

How do I make the most of Machoke Community Day?

The following bonuses will be active during Machoke Community Day:

    Tripled Stardust for catching Pokémon

    Incense lasts three hours

    Lure Modules lasts three hours

Machop special photobombs when taking snapshots

That said, you should definitely pop a Star Piece and an Incense and try to nab some powerful Machop.

If you can Mega Evolve Heracross, Blaziken, Medicham, Lopunny, Lucario, or Gallade, you’ll score additional Machop Candy per catch.

As a reminder, you can trade your Machop or Machoke before evolving it to completely negate the candy cost to turn it into a Machamp. There will also be “Community Day Continued” Timed Research until May 31 that will reward more Machop, including ones with special themed backgrounds. This research will keep the increased shiny rate for Machop, even after the three-hour event is over, so make sure you complete them for extra chances to get a shiny.

Pokémon Go Machop Community Day guide
• You might want to wait to get your Nintendo Switch 2

Your Nintendo Switch 2 preorder won’t ship with an OLED screen, but an OLED-version isn’t out of the picture. Nintendo has reached out to Samsung Electronics Co. to manufacture Switch 2 chips in a bid to ramp up production speeds and potentially break its sales projections by March 2026, according to a new report from Bloomberg.
The Nintendo Switch 2 was met with almost unprecedented demand in Japan, and Nintendo has issued an apology that it had to limit pre-orders. Roughly 2.2 million people requested a preorder in Japan alone, and preorder numbers for Europe and North America haven’t been shared. However, pre-orders sold out quickly, indicating high demand across the globe.

Nintendo predicts that it will sell between 15 and 20 million units by March 2026, exceeding its initial goal of matching the Nintendo Switch’s debut sales of 15 million in the first ten months. Now, other factors have come into play, including supply chain woes and concerns over tariffs, but the gaming giant doesn’t expect to see much of an impact in overall sales.

Samsung has provided both flash memory and OLED screens for the Nintendo Switch, so this collaboration isn’t new. However, the original Nintendo Switch used chips manufactured at TSMC; the Switch 2 uses an Nvidia-based chipset, and Samsung’s manufacturing processes are optimized to produce that kind of chip. This means Nintendo won’t have to compete with other companies at TSMC for manufacturing capacity, increasing the chances of meeting the demand.
So does that mean you should wait to buy a Nintendo Switch 2? Perhaps, but not necessarily. While an OLED refresh would be a nice improvement, it isn’t guaranteed. And it also might not be needed. The Nintendo Switch 2 has an LCD display and a much-improved framerate that put it nearly on par with an OLED, according to our hands-on review.
The console also supports both ray-tracing and variable refresh rate to bridge the gap between LCD and OLED, and its use of DLSSkeeps the frame rate smooth and steady.

  • Graft (Phantom Tree) by Allora & Calzadilla blends postcolonial history with climate advocacy atop FIAT’s old raceway

The south ramp of FIAT’s Lingotto complex is fully in bloom thanks to a new site-specific installation by artists Jennifer Allora and Guillermo Calzadilla. The duo has created Graftfor La Pista 500, an art gallery at the former FIAT raceway in Turin, Italy.

Created as the FIAT headquarters and car factory, the Lingotto complex was built in the 1920s by Giacomo Matte-Trucco. After closing its doors in 1982, an architecture competition, won by Renzo Piano, transformed the building into a multi-purpose complex.
The restructuring by Renzo Piano took place from 1991 to 2003 over three consecutive phases. The Giovanni and Marella Agnelli Picture Gallery, Pinacoteca Agnelli, opened in 2002. Part of the approximately 30,000 square feet of space includes La Pista 500, an outdoor art project for temporary exhibitions on what once was the car testing track on the Lingotto rooftop.
Graftis one of four new installations on display at La Pista 500.Graftwas positioned in such a way that it expands on the rooftop garden at the site, teasing the eruption of plantings visitors will find as they journey to the top. The work also draws from horticulture in its title. “Grafting” is a process used to join plants from different species, allowing them to grow together. Additionally, “ghost trees” are trees that have either been removed or never had a chance to grow due to deforestation.

Delicately suspended amid the ramp’s industrial helix, Graftis a bright intervention that gently commands the viewer’s gaze. The installation uses recycled polyvinyl castings of blossoms from the roble amarillo, an oak species native to the Caribbean. The artists chose this plant to shed light on the region’s significant loss of biodiversity from the colonial period to the present day. By displacing the flowers from their original place on a tree, the installation becomes a commentary on vanished roots.
The plastic flowers are arranged like a tree without its trunk or branches.Based in Puerto Rico, Allora & Calzadilla have been active since 1995. Through their practice, the duo uses a wide variety of artistic media to explore interconnectivity between history, ecology, and geopolitics.
Works in La Pista 500 feature international artists whose pieces engage with the architectural history, urban context, and surrounding landscape of the site. Allora & Calzadilla, along with three other artists, join installations by Thomas Bayrle, Monica Bonvicini, VALIE EXPORT, Sylvie Fleury, Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster, Marco Giordano, Louise Lawler, Finnegan Shannon, and SUPERFLEX on the Lingotto’s rooftop.
Graftwill be on display until March 1, 2026.

The plastic flowers are arranged like a tree without its trunk or branches.
