• UK trial shows space robots could build solar farms in orbit

Remote-controlled robots could one day build giant solar farms in space, according to a recent trial in the UK.
British startup Space Solar conducted the test at the UK Atomic Energy Authority’sfacilities on the University of Oxford’s Culham Campus, which hosts several fusion research initiatives.
The company used two remotely operated robotic arms to assemble a section of the support structure for its future solar power satellite. The device aims to beam the Sun’s energy from space to Earth.
According to Space Solar, the trial proved that robotics can assemble gigawatt-scale solar power satellites.
Sam Adlen, the startup’s co-CEO, said the demonstration opens the door to all manner of in-space infrastructure projects.
“This is a milestone not just for our satellite architecture, but for the future of large-scale structures in space, from data centres to energy infrastructure,” he said.
As part of its plans to build a working fusion reactor, UKAEA is developing robots for extreme industrial environments, such as maintaining future fusion power plants. The trial shows that those same machines may also show promise for cosmic applications.
Professor Rob Buckingham, executive director of UKAEA, said building fusion reactors and structures in space shared some common challenges, such as remoteness, radiation, and extreme temperatures.
The demo suggests that fusion-hardened robotics could help automate the complex task of assembling vast solar farms in orbit.
    A solar revolution in space?
Space Solar plans to capture the Sun’s energy in space, using huge satellites equipped with solar arrays that are several kilometres long and around 20 metres wide. The probes would capture the energy via microwaves and wirelessly transmit it to dedicated receiver stations on Earth, which would convert the energy into electricity.
By 2029, Space Solar plans to commission its first 30MW demonstrator system, which would be capable of powering around 1000 homes. By the early 2030s,  the startup plans to deploy its first gigawatt-scale solar space farm. The UK Space Agency has provided grant funding for the development of the startup’s first satellite.
Solar panels are theoretically capable of gathering far more energy in space than on Earth because, unhindered by the atmosphere, the intensity of sunlight is much greater. They could also beam energy from orbit 24/7, regardless of the weather on the ground.
However, space-based solar power faces many challenges. It’s currently far more expensive than ground-based solar systems — the initial development of a gigawatt-scale prototype could cost €15bn–€20bn. Then there are the potential environmental impacts. Installing a satellite of that scale could involve hundreds of separate rocket launches, contributing to atmospheric pollution.
Nevertheless, the European Space Agency, NASA, and several startups in the UK, US, China, and Japan are all working to make space-based solar a reality.

  • Fallout renewed for season 3 but has ‘season 6 type of endpoint’
Get ready for more Wasteland adventures because Prime Video’s Fallout has already been renewed for season 3. The news arrives months before the show’s December season 2 premiere, which is set to explore New Vegas. Prime Video said in a press release on Monday, that season 2 of Fallout “will pick up in the aftermath of Season One’s epic finale and take audiences along for a journey through the wasteland of the Mojave to the post-apocalyptic city of New Vegas.” So, to all the Fallout: New Vegas purists out there — worry not, Prime Video sees you. As for season 3, no further details have been shared regarding where the story will take viewers or what characters from the video game universe will make their debut. While we wait for season 2 and pray that season 3 maintains the series’ high bar, there appear to be plans to keep this series going well beyond that. During an interview at Comic Con Liverpool, Aaron Moten, the actor who plays former Brotherhood of Steel soldier Maximus, opened up about where Lucy and friends could take us. “When I signed on to do the series, we would have a starting point and they gave me the endpoint,” Moten said. “And that endpoint hasn’t changed. But it is season 5, [season] 6 type of endpoint. We’ve always known that we were gonna take our time with the development of the characters.” Now, let’s be real, Fallout has to nail seasons 2 and 3 before we can even think about seasons 5 or 6. And while season 1 was met with critical acclaim and received multiple Emmy nominations, there could be a timeline where the show goes completely off the rails. Nonetheless, it’s promising to see that producers Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, showrunners Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet, and Amazon MGM Studios have a plan with a clear end goal in mind. Fallout debuted on Prime Video in April 2024. The live-action adaption of the popular, post-apocalyptic video game franchise introduces fans to a new Vault Dweller named Lucy MacLean. The series follows Lucy as she embarks on a journey through the Wasteland, a new world ravaged by war and hubris, as she attempts to find her father Hank. Season 1 ended on an Easter egg cliffhanger; the final shot showed off the skyline of the iconic New Vegas settlement. As the camera pans out, viewers are treated to a shot of the Mojave Desert and a skull belonging to one of our best friends from the Fallout franchise: the Deathclaw. Yeah, season 2 is gearing up to be something special. Fallout season 2 is set to premiere in December 2025. Fallout season 1 is available now, streaming only on Prime Video. Achievement unlocked! • #333;">Fallout Season 2 Teaser Hits the Internet, Reveals Fresh Look at New Vegas
A brief teaser for Fallout Season 2 has hit the internet, showing a new look at New Vegas. The clip, shown during the Amazon Upfront livestream overnight, was captured and uploaded on reddit.
It shows Lucy (Ella Purnell) and The Ghoul (Walton Goggins) 50 miles out from what was Las Vegas.
We hear the famous Geiger Counter sound, signifying radiation is in the air.
The Ghoul and Lucy look at each other before heading towards New Vegas, and we get a good look at the post-apocalyptic city skyline.New Vegas is of course the setting for the Obsidian-developed Fallout: New Vegas, and the setting for Season 2 of the Fallout adaptation. So, what can we learn about the show's take on New Vegas from this teaser? Well, it’s more detailed than the brief look we got at New Vegas at the end of Season 1, which stands to reason.
It will look familiar to anyone who's played New Vegas, although it appears more densely packed with buildings (the video game New Vegas was a relatively sparse location). The standout is of course the Lucky 38 Resort and Casino, which is on the New Vegas Strip.
In the New Vegas video game, the Lucky 38 is the pre-War casino from which Mr.
    House runs the city.
Fans also believe they can make out the Ultra-Luxe, but in truth it’s hard to discern individual video game locations from the shot here.PlayWarning! Potential spoilers for the Fallout TV show follow. The show is confirmed to be heading to New Vegas for Season 2, and it's not just about the location itself.
    Mr.
House is set to be a part of the new season, though how involved he'll be is unclear.
We've already seen the tease of some familiar sights thanks to previous set leaks, including this video that shows part of New Vegas and the iconic Lucky 38 resort and casino, all bright and lit up.
It's certainly far from the rusty place you might expect. It’s worth remembering where we are in the Fallout timeline: the TV show is set in the year 2296, after all the Fallout video games.
Fallout 4 takes place in the year 2287, while Fallout: New Vegas is set in the year 2281, a full 15 years prior to the events of the show. So, what happened in the 15 years since we last saw New Vegas? Co-showrunners Graham Wagner and Geneva Robertson-Dworet have said the setting has changed, and explained why that is important for fans to note.“All we really want the audience to know is that things have happened, so that there isn't an expectation that we pick the show up in Season 2, following one of the myriad canon endings that depend on your choices when you play [Fallout: New Vegas],” Wagner said last year.“With that post-credits stuff, we really wanted to imply, guys, the world has progressed, and the idea that the wasteland stays as it is decade-to-decade is preposterous to us.
It’s just a place [of] constant tragedy, events, horrors — there's a constant churn of trauma.
We're definitely implying more has occurred.”But what will happen when the Power Armor-clad Overseer Hank, played by Kyle MacLachlan, turns up (potentially after a dustup with a Deathclaw)? Some speculate Mr.
House, the enigmatic ruler of New Vegas in the video game and dastardly boss of RobCo Industries in the TV show’s flashbacks to before the bombs fell, may enlist the help of Hank to restore New Vegas to its former glory.
Perhaps, if that’s the way the story goes, the forces of Mr.
House and New Vegas will end up taking on the Brotherhood of Steel in yet another Fallout faction battle, with Lucy, Maximus, and The Ghoul caught in the middle.Overnight, Amazon announced a December 2025 release window for Season 2, and confirmed Season 3.
Last week, Aaron Moten, who plays Brotherhood of Steel hopeful Maximus, said the “endpoint” of the Fallout TV show has it running until Season 5 or Season 6.We had a great time with Season 1, writing in IGN's Fallout The Series review that the show is "a bright and funny apocalypse filled with dark punchlines and bursts of ultra-violence [and is] among the best video game adaptations ever made," slapping it with a well-earned 9/10.To help tide you over until Season 2, here's our interview with Todd Howard and Jonathan Nolan covering all our burning questions after the end of Season 1.Wesley is the UK News Editor for IGN.

"Together with our amazing partners at Bethesda Games and Bethesda Softworks, we are delighted to announce a third season of Fallout, well ahead of the much-anticipated debut of Season Two," said global head of television at Amazon MGM Studios, Vernon Sanders. The early renewal shows that Prime Video has a lot of faith in the video game adaptation, and for good reason.
