Google’s family of “open” AI models, Gemma, is growing. During Google I/O 2025 on Tuesday, Google took the wraps off Gemma 3n, a model designed to run “smoothly” on phones, laptops, and tablets. Available in preview starting Tuesday, Gemma 3n can handle audio, text, images, and videos, according to Google. Models efficient enough to run offline and without the need for computing in the cloud have gained steam in the AI community in recent years. Not only are they cheaper to use than large models, but they preserve privacy by eliminating the need to transfer data to a remote data center. During a keynote at I/O, Gemma Product Manager Gus Martins said that Gemma 3n can run on devices with less than 2GB of RAM. “Gemma 3n shares the same architecture as Gemini Nano, and is and is engineered for incredible performance,” he added. In addition to Gemma 3n, Google is releasing MedGemma through its Health AI Developer Foundations program. According to the company, MedGemma is its most capable open model for analyzing health-related text and images. “MedGemma [is] our […] collection of open models for multimodal [health] text and image understanding,” Martins said. “MedGemma works great across a range of image and text applications, so that developers […] can adapt the models for their own health apps.” Also on the horizon is SignGemma, an open model to translate sign language into spoken-language text. Following its latest update, chief creative officer Johan Pilestedt revealed on Twitter that the co-op shooter sees around 2.5 million players weekly. He’s also “super excited” to “see how many more log in with this update.” This refers to Heart of Democracy, a major content drop where the Illuminate attack Super Earth and players must fight on its streets to activate the Planetary Defense Cannons. New weapons and enemies, alongside weapon customization, arrived in last week’s update. Heart of Democracy focuses on the battle, with SEAF troops fighting alongside players (and taking temporary orders). You also have to watch out for civilians or face the consequences. Available for PS5 and PC, Helldivers 2 has sold 15 million copies since launching in February 2024. Luminar, the lidar company founded by recently replaced CEO Austin Russell, is going through another restructuring, according to a recent regulatory filing. This new round of layoffs, which the company did not provide figures for, follows extensive cuts to the workforce in 2024. Luminar cut about 30% of its workforce in 2024, a reduction that was expected to cost $4 million to $6 million in additional cash charges. Some of those layoffs spilled into the first quarter of 2025. A total of 212 employees were laid off. In its latest regulatory filing, the company said it began additional layoffs May 15. These new layoffs are expected to cost $4 million to $5 million in cash charges. These costs are expected to be incurred in the second and third quarters of this year. The layoffs are the latest complication for Luminar. Earlier this month, the company’s board replaced Russell as CEO and board chair. The board issued a press release saying he resigned as the result of an ethics inquiry without providing any additional information. Luminar’s board replaced Russell and appointed Paul Ricci to the role. Ricci is the former chairman and CEO of Nuance. A day after the leadership change was announced, board member Jun Hong Heng also resigned, according to a regulatory filing, which stated his decision was not due to any disagreements with the company on any matter relating to the company’s operations, policies, or practices. The company has not responded to requests for comment. Russell became a billionaire after his lidar startup Luminar went public in 2021 after the company merged with special purpose acquisition company Gores Metropoulos Inc., with a post-deal market valuation of $3.4 billion. Not every client has a firm grasp on their priorities when starting a project, but the marching orders from one Central Texas couple were abundantly clear: They wanted to convert a classic car garage on their estate into a dance hall and speakeasy, creating their own social sanctuary. After enlisting designer Sarah Stacey to bring their vision to life, that “simple” project quickly catapulted into a four-year, all-encompassing design journey when the pair added the renovation of their 4,900-square-foot primary home into the scope. It was during this time that Stacey, an avid auction enthusiast, shared her passion and expertise with her clients. “Walking through auction previews is thrilling—you wonder who owned the items and how they were used. You can feel the history,” she explains. “New homes need stories; we can design an entire room around a piece. Plus, you can save a lot of money at these events.”But before the bidding wars came planning. Stacey reimagined the space that once housed the former owner’s car collection as a moody billiards club, replete with plenty of lounge seating, a full bar salvaged from a Ruth’s Chris Steak House, and vintage collectibles, including an original Jimi Hendrix guitar. To separate the dance hall from the speakeasy, she cleverly utilized an iconic British telephone booth as the secret entrance from one area to the other. A simple push of the back wall gets you in—if you know there’s a door, that is. This is a dopamine interior.... It’s immersive and just makes you happy.For the main house, the objective was to embrace the home’s original Mediterranean style, but amplify it with a series of thoughtful selections. Stacey meticulously evaluated “every single Sherwin-Williams white” to find the ideal buttery color for the main living areas (Casa Blanca, Sherwin-Williams), incorporated 200-year-old salvaged wood beams, and designed the laundry room in the spirit of a French garden, complete with an undercounter striped sink skirt worthy of a Parisian café.She then set out to blend old-world charm—like the lavishly draped canopy bed in the primary suite—with contemporary pieces, such as large-scale pendants and multitiered chandeliers. The overall design is enhanced by colorful carpets, including a striking snake pattern in the living room and a hand-tufted graphic rug in the dining area. Despite its numerous ups and downs, it’s impressive to see Arrowhead Game Studios’ Helldivers 2 still going strong. Following its latest update, chief creative officer Johan Pilestedt revealed on Twitter that the co-op shooter sees around 2.5 million players weekly. He’s also “super excited” to “see how many more log in with this update.” This refers to Heart of Democracy, a major content drop where the Illuminate attack Super Earth and players must fight on its streets to activate the Planetary Defense Cannons. New weapons and enemies, alongside weapon customization, arrived in last week’s update. Heart of Democracy focuses on the battle, with SEAF troops fighting alongside players (and taking temporary orders). You also have to watch out for civilians or face the consequences. Available for PS5 and PC, Helldivers 2 has sold 15 million copies since launching in February 2024. Where it goes from here is unknown, but CEO Shams Jorjani said support would continue as long as “folks keep playing and buying Super Credits.” Stay tuned for further updates in the meantime.
