  • Nothing CMF Phone 2 Leaks Online, Showcasing A 3-Lens Camera Layout And Compact Design
    www.yankodesign.com
Were just halfway into March, and weve gotten more smartphones than anyone can count! It started with the iPhone 16E launching, followed by all of Mobile World Congress, the debut of Nothings 3a and 3a Pro phones, and now while we were patiently waiting for Googles Pixel 9a to drop, someone on Reddit lifted the covers on Nothings CMF Phone 2. Set to launch later this year, the Phone 2 follows last years CMF Phone 1 a stripped-down, budget version of Nothings tech offerings without the transparent design, but with a unique modular backplate designed for third-party accessories. It seems like the trend continues with the CMF Phone 2, featuring the same removable backplate and the knob at the bottom to affix accessories but the biggest detail remains the inclusion of a third camera lens, located right near the two main cameras. Details on the camera capabilities remain unclear at this point, but Reddit (where this photo first made its appearance) users are loving another understated design element too its compact size. Although we dont know the exact dimensions, it looks like the phones display measures approximately 5.3 to 5.5 inches in size, putting it in iPhone Mini territory. This should be incredible news for people on the market for a small phone! The CMF Phone 2 is expected to be powered by Qualcomms Snapdragon 7s Gen 3 chipset, though this remains unconfirmed. If true, it would mark a shift from the MediaTek Dimensity 7300 used in the CMF Phone 1. This chipset is the same as the one in the Nothing Phone (3a), raising questions about how CMF will differentiate its offering. Based on the recently listed BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards) certification, we have confirmation of Nothing listing the new CMF phone with the model number A001, which is notably different from its predecessors A015 model number, further fueling speculation that this is an entirely new device rather than a minor refresh.Leaks also suggest the phone could launch in a blue color variant, following a trend seen with the CMF Phone 1. While specific details on display quality, camera hardware, and battery capacity are yet to surface, it is likely that CMF will retain a budget-friendly approach while refining the hardware. Pricing also remains unknown, but considering the CMF Phone 1 launched at 15,999 Indian rupees ($184 USD) expectations are that its successor will land in a similar range. With an April launch hinted at by a Nothing designer, more concrete details should emerge soon.Image Credits: PanickCatThe post Nothing CMF Phone 2 Leaks Online, Showcasing A 3-Lens Camera Layout And Compact Design first appeared on Yanko Design.

  • People are using Google's new AI model to remove watermarks from images
    techcrunch.com
Users on social media have discovered a controversial use case for Googles new Gemini AI model: removing watermarks from images, including from images published by Getty Images and other well-known stock media outfits.Last week, Google expanded access to its Gemini 2.0 Flash models image generation feature, which lets the model natively generate and edit image content. Its a powerful capability, by all accounts. But it also appears to have few guardrails. Gemini 2.0 Flash will uncomplainingly create images depicting celebrities and copyrighted characters, and as alluded to earlier remove watermarks from existing photos. As several X and Reddit users noted, Gemini 2.0 Flash wont just remove watermarks, but attempt to fill in any gaps created by a watermarks deletion. Other AI-powered tools do this, too, but Gemini 2.0 Flash seems to be exceptionally skilled at it and free to use.To be clear, Gemini 2.0 Flashs image generation feature is labeled as experimental and not for production use at the moment, and is only available in Googles developer-facing tools like AI Studio. The model also isnt a perfect watermark remover. Gemini 2.0 Flash appears to struggle with certain semi-transparent watermarks and watermarks that canvas large portions of images.Still, some copyright holders will surely take issue with Gemini 2.0 Flashs lack of usage restrictions. Models including Anthropics Claude 3.7 Sonnet and OpenAIs GPT-4o explicitly refuse to remove watermarks; Claude calls removing a watermark from an image unethical and potentially illegal.Removing a watermark without the original owners consent is considered illegal under U.S. copyright law (according to law firms like this one)outside of rare exceptions.Google didnt immediately respond to a request for comment sent outside of normal business hours.

  • Apple reportedly considered building the iPhone 17 Air without ports
    techcrunch.com
In BriefPosted:2:51 PM PDT March 16, 2025Image Credits:STR/NurPhoto / Getty ImagesApple reportedly considered building the iPhone 17 Air without portsAfter reporting in January that Apple is adding an Air option to its iPhone lineup, Bloombergs Mark Gurman is offering more details about the upcoming slimmer iPhone. The iPhone 17 Air will launch this fall, Gurman says and like the MacBook Air, it will be thinner than standard models, while combining high-end and low-end features. It apparently took a herculean effort for Apple engineers to create a skinnier phone with thinner batteries without sacrificing battery life.Gurman also reports that Apple considered making this the first completely port-free iPhone, with all charging done wirelessly and all data syncing accomplished via the cloud. However, Apple decided not to go this route, at least for now, due in part to concerns about how European regulators who have mandated that smartphone makers support USB-C connectors might respond.Topics

  • Meta takes aim at ex-employees memoir Careless People
    techcrunch.com
Meta won a legal victory this week against Sarah Wynn-Williams, a former employee who recently published a memoir of her time at the company titled Careless People: A Cautionary Tale of Power, Greed, and Lost Idealism. An arbitrator ruled that the company has made a valid argument that Wynn-Williams, who worked at Facebook (now Meta) from 2011 to 2017, may have violated the non-disparagement agreement she signed when leaving the company. The ruling states that Wynn-Williams is temporarily prohibited from promoting or, to the extent within [her] control, from further publishing or distributing her book until private arbitration concludes. However, Careless People remains available for purchase, and may in fact be benefitting from the Streisand Effect, in which attempts to suppress information only serve to further publicize it. As of Sunday afternoon, Careless People was the number three bestselling book on Amazon.Macmillan, which published Careless People through its imprint Flatiron Books, said in a statement that the arbitrators decision has no impact on the publisher and that it will absolutely continue to support and promote the book. The publisher added that it is appalled by Metas tactics to silence [its] author through the use of a non-disparagement clause in a severance agreement. To be clear, the arbitrators order makes no reference to the claims within Careless People, Macmillan said. The book went through a thorough editing and vetting process, and we remain committed to publishing important books such as this.Image Credits:Macmillan /Careless People offers what a New York Times reviewer described as a darkly funny and genuinely shocking look inside Facebook particularly its relationship with China and other governments. (Wynn-Williams roles at Facebook included serving as director of global public policy.)I was there for seven years, and if I had to sum it up in a sentence, Id say that it started as a hopeful comedy and ended in darkness and regret, Wynn-Williams wrote in the memoir. She added, [M]ost days, working on policy at Facebook was way less like enacting a chapter from Machiavelli and way more like watching a bunch of fourteen-year-olds whove been given superpowers and an ungodly amount of money, as they jet around the world to figure out what power has bought and brought them.Wynn-Williams also reportedly filed a whistleblower complaint with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission alleging that, in its eagerness to operate in China, Facebook created a plan in 2015 to install a chief editor who would have been able to censor certain content or shut down the site in China on behalf of the countrys ruling party. In a statement, a Meta spokesperson described Careless People as a mix of out-of-date and previously reported claims about [Meta] and false accusations about our executives, and described Wynn-Williams is an employee terminated eight years ago for poor performance. We do not operate our services in China today, the Meta spokesperson continued. It is no secret we were once interested in doing so as part of Facebooks effort to connect the world. This was widely reported beginning a decade ago. We ultimately opted not to go through with the ideas wed explored, which Mark Zuckerberg announced in 2019.Careless People recounts uncomfortable encounters between Joel Kaplan, now Metas vice president of global public policy, and Wynn-Williams, who claims he ground himself against her at a work event, described her as sultry, and made weird comments about her husband.Meta said it investigated Wynn-Williams allegations of harassment and found them misleading and unfounded. As for whether the company is simply trying to silence a whistleblowers criticism, the spokesperson said, Whistleblower status protects communications to the government, not disgruntled activists trying to sell books.Current and former Facebook employees have also criticized Wynn-Williams memoir. Ex-staffer Mike Rognlien said he sat next to Sarah for 18 months when we both worked at the New York office and claimed the book has so many lies in it I wouldnt even know where to start.Wynn-Williams discussed Metas pushback in a Business Insider interview conducted before the arbitration ruling, characterizing criticisms from the company and former coworkers as distractions. Asked about whether the book had been fact-checked, she said, I think Metas problem is using this to not answer the questions themselves. What I would love is for us not to fall into the distraction.

  • How to get the look of the fire from ZZZ?
    realtimevfx.com
Hey everyone, Im working on a ZZZ fan art by Quadtonne (I cant post the images because Im a new user, Im hitting a media limit, Ill try to add all the extra images as comments), and I need some help getting the look to closer to that of ZZZs fires. My blockout uses fast spawning sprites for the fireball, and using a gradient and an additive material, it works alright. I use two emitters, one that stays with the ball as it travels to get the round shape of the fireball, and one that trails behind to make the tail, it gets the color and timing across but it doesnt convey the same shape language or smoothness of it at all.ZZZ tends to get these really smooth fires, made with what I think are deformed meshes, would anyone know good resources or pointers to make this kind of fire/ how to adapt it for my use case? (or even just generally how to achieve the look in this concept art):

  • Trump Administration Mass Canceling Science Grants, Causing Job Loss
    www.forbes.com
Johns Hopkins University is having to lay off over 2,000 people after $800 million in federal grants ... [+] to the institutions investigators were abruptly terminated (Photo by Rob Carr/Getty Images)Getty ImagesLooks like scientists and scientific funding in the U.S. are now facing a different type of cancel cultureone in which their funding from federal agencies is being abruptly canceled. More and more researchers have been posting on social media news about their research grants being abruptly terminated since President Donald Trump took office. There have also been reports of the National Institutes of Health wholesale yanking grants in particular areas, such as Sara Reardon reporting for Science about at least 33 research grants for studying vaccine hesitancy being pulled. And since a large proportion of scientific research funding typically goes to research personnel, the result has and will be job losses. For example, Johns Hopkins University is having to lay off over 2,000 people after $800 million in grants to the institutions investigators were basically yanked, as Kanishka Singh reported for Reuters.Federal Grants Being Abruptly TerminatedThe processes by which these decisions have been made have been about as clear as mud mixed with orange spray tan. The termination letters have provide very little explanation beyond stock language like saying that the research award no longer effectuates agency priorities. This has been stunning to many researchers since a grant from the NIH usually represents an extensive long-term commitment. Imagine being in a serious long-term relationship with someone only to find one day a note that says, You longer effectuate my priorities. The letters typically havent given the researchers and institutions any opportunity for further clarifications or modifications to the project either. Theyve included language like no modification of the project could align the project with agency priorities. Again, this is a bit like your significant other saying, No matter what you do, I wont like you."If you are thinking that researchers who have lost their grants can simply get new ones to save the jobs of those working for them and even their own jobs, think again. It aint that easy. The whole process of applying for grants is a lengthy, onerous one, usually taking at least a year from the time the grant proposal is submitted till it being awarded, assuming that the proposal is part of the lucky 10% or less that successfully gets funded. So, unless youve got a time machine in the form of a DeLorean or know a charitable billionaire, you wont be able to get new funding quickly enough to prevent job loss. The kit and caboodle of grants being terminated have included various training and early career grants. Such grants are designed to help researchers establish themselves at crucial periods in their careers when they have few other options to continue their scientific work. Who knows how many may have to abandon their scientific careers as a result? The loss of grants will also significantly affect universities and other such institutions. These institutions depend on funding for indirect costs from the research grants that researchers pull in for all sorts of things ranging from salaries for administrators to the maintenance of facilities as Ive described before for Forbes.Opportunities For Grants From NIH Being PulledPlus, it looks like a number of funding opportunities have been pulled as well. So, there are fewer things to apply to now. In a LinkedIn post, Arghavan Salles, MD, PhD, a clinical associate professor of medicine at Stanford University, mentioned 76 notices of funding opportunities from the NIH being unpublished:From LinkedInFrom LinkedInTheres been no indication whether these dropped funding opportunities will be replaced with new ones. Meanwhile, researchers may be quite reluctant to apply for any new grants until theres more clarity on what may or may not be funded. And who knows if and when that clarity will come. It seems like the Trump Administration has been searching grants and contracts for particular terms to identify those to terminate, as I recently detailed for Forbes. But this practice has been uncovered by talking with and obtaining issued memos from various sources at NIH and NSF and not through official announcements or statements from the leadership of the NIH, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services or the White House.Mass Cuts In Grants May Damage America For YearsAs you can see, Salles described these cuts as devastating for the American scientific enterprise. People will stop coming here for training (did you know 40% of American Nobel prize winners since 2000 have been immigrants?) and Americans will increasingly seek training and careers elsewhere." She continued with, This is a massive self-inflicted wound from which we wont recover for generations. In addition, it is important to remember that the American scientific enterprise is not like Las Vegas. What happens in it doesnt simply stay there. The American scientific enterprise ends up affecting all of society. When countries are trying to grow, they typically will invest heavily in science. Its not surprising, for example, that the Founding Fathers of the U.S. included scientists like Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. So much of the stuff that you use each day is the result of science. You can also thank science for being alive so that you can use all that stuff. Before the advent of routine childhood vaccinations, many more kids used to regularly die from diseases like the measles and smallpox. Life expectancy in the U.S. has gone from around 47 years in 1900 to around 78 years in 2022, largely because of various health and public health measures that were identified by scientific research. Thats right, only about a hundred years ago, you would have already been middle-aged had you reached your 20s.If American want to remain as competitive as its been in the world, it has to continue producing new scientific ideas and things. Michael Jordan and Larry Bird didnt say, Oh, now that Ive won a championship, Im going to stop doing this work-hard-and-improve-my-game thing and instead rest on my laurels and eat bon-bons. No, they kept practicing hard and adding new skills, which not only made them great but kept them great.Cutting scientific funding might do the opposite. It may discourage people from staying in or even going into science and encourage those who want to continue to do science to go to other countries. Those who would have become successful scientists may do other things to make a living like make YouTube videos because there just arent enough people doing that already. This may only be the beginning of this new cancel culture that has emerged at the NIH and other federal agencies during the Trump Administration. Who knows how many other grants and grant opportunities will be canceled. I will continue to follow this situation, make inquires to the agencies and provide updates accordingly.

  • Apple iPhone 17 Pro Models Exposed In Latest Leak
    www.forbes.com
iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Air and iPhone 17 blanks.Sonny DicksonAs more details on the iPhone 17 family become apparent, the latest leaked images illustrate some of the most significant design changes to Apples upcoming smartphones.Longtime Apple leaker Sonny Dickson has exclusive images highlighting the design of the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. Apple is expected to announce the range in early September 2025, but we can see many of the new features today.iPhone 17 DesignDicksons images likely show machined blanks provided to peripheral manufacturers ahead of a phones release. These allow cases, holders, and other accessories to be designed around the exact dimensions of the device and the individual buttons. While they wont show any software upgrades, they do give us a clear indicator of Apples updated approach to the iPhone. All four models have the same physical buttons, including the Capture Button introduced last year. The programmable Action Button can be seen alongside the volume and power buttons.iPhone 17 Air Camera BarOf the models on show, we can see the new iPhone 17 Air. Forbes contributor David Phelan has taken a closer look at the new slimline model. However, the comically large camera bar rumoured to hold the optics while still going for the fashionably thin dimension is evident in these blanks. The iPhone 17 Air blank does suggest another altered area of the design, with the selfie camera and forward-facing sensors flipped around. This is no doubt due to accommodations needed to hit in the larger rear camera hardware. Still, I cant help feeling that having one phone offering a different profile is something an earlier iteration of Apple would have fought to avoid.iPhone 17 QuestionsWhat cant be seen is the base of any of the four smartphones. There are some suggestions that Apple is considering dropping the USB-C port to create a sealed iPhone. They would rely on cloud syncing and wireless charging instead of the traditional cabled options. While the blanks tell us much about the external cues in the new design, some mysteries remain. Now read the latest iPhone 17, MacBook and AI issues in Forbes weekly Apple news digest...
