  • Den of Thieves 2, now on Netflix, pulls off another great heist with a smart subgenre pivot
    www.polygon.com
The original Den of Thieves was a movie cut directly from the Heat mold: a kitchen-sink heist movie with a little bit of everything. There were wives, kids, crews, and every kind of relationship drama, all held together by the glue of a cat-and-mouse race between cops and crooks hell, even Heat threw in a serial killer plotline. But above all else, Den of Thieves, like Heat, was mostly very serious business. Sure, there was a joke here or there, but they rarely felt like a genuine invitation to laugh. However, when writer-director Christian Gudegast got the chance to make Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, which is now on Netflix, he had the brilliant idea to let his meticulously professional criminals crack a few more jokes.Pantera picks up right where the original movie left off: Master criminal Donnie (OShea Jackson Jr.) has escaped to Europe, but he cant let his brilliant heist planning skills go to waste, so he jumps from crew to crew knocking off the most prestigious targets on the continent. Meanwhile, scumbag detective Big Nick (Gerard Butler) hasnt had such a smooth go of life, and is still obsessing over the Federal Reserve heist from the first movie. So when Nick spots Donnies MO all over the jobs in Europe, he takes his lapsed status as a U.S. marshal as license to chase his white whale. But this is where Gudegast finds the movies most brilliant twist: Nick muscles his way into Donnies crew with a cocktail of threats and sweet talk, and gets a key role to play in a major diamond heist. And suddenly, just like that, the first movies cat and mouse (though we didnt know it until the end) have become best pals, and the Den of Thieves franchise has vaulted itself from straight-faced heist drama into a wonderful kind of buddy heist action-comedy.Like the Fast and Furious franchise before it, this move feels perfectly natural for Den of Thieves, thanks in large part to some clever character massaging from Gudegasts script. In the original movie, Big Nick was all edges. Hes a walking threat, making everyones lives difficult at every turn: whether that was his wife and children, Donnie, or Ray (Pablo Schreiber) and his girlfriend. Nick moved through the world of Den of Thieves exclusively to cause friction with everyone he touched. In his own words, he was the bad guy a character whose every action was designed to give us sympathy for the criminals and to convince us that the movies litany of shootouts were a necessity because of all parties involved. In Pantera, those edges have been sanded all the way down until what were left with is a dirtbag version of Brad Pitts Rusty from the Oceans movies. Hes still tough, sure, but hes also a goofball. The entire first half of the movie makes him a walking punchline, whether its struggling to pronounce croissant or crashing a scooter after trying E. And thanks in large part to Gerard Butlers straight-faced but very game performance, it all totally works. Nicks transformation into a lovable lunatic fits the series like a glove, and gives it a future thats easy to imagine in fact, the movies last scene even gives us an enticing preview. This metaphorical tie-loosening for Nick extends to the rest of Den of Thieves 2: Pantera, too. Everyone is a little funnier and a little less tense. The heist scenes arent as white-knuckle, but instead are slicker and better paced, like a scene when the team has to dart from blindspot to blindspot, or shimmy across the worlds ricketiest pole to reach the safety of another rooftop. Every situation is a slightly exaggerated ante up from the original, and it all works marvelously.Unfortunately, this isnt one of those recommendations where I can tell you to skip straight to the second movie because its clearly the direction the franchise is moving in. The good news is Den of Thieves is still pretty great, and watching the series find a totally new action-comedy gear to shift to in the sequel is part of Panteras charm. In other words, if youve already seen Den of Thieves, then you should jump to Pantera immediately now that its on Netflix, and if you havent seen either, I have the perfect crew of dirtbags and degenerates for you to spend the next couple of days with.Den of Thieves 2: Pantera is now streaming on Netflix.

  • A Small Minsk Apartment Balances Bold Colors and Aesthetics
    design-milk.com
Situated in the heart of Minsk, Belarus, Apartment Ann proves how compact living spaces can be transformed into a stylish and highly functional homes. Designed by Natasha Kukresh, an interior architect based in Brittany, France, this 533-square-foot studio apartment masterfully balances aesthetics and practicality while ensuring a sense of openness and comfort.Faced with the challenge of limited square footage, Kukresh approached the project with a strategic mindset, prioritizing efficiency without compromising style. To optimize the available space, the traditional dining table was replaced with a sleek kitchen peninsula, providing both a dining and prep area. Recognizing that the apartment is not intended for work, a dedicated workspace was intentionally left out, allowing for a more fluid and uncluttered layout. The studio layout incorporates a bedroom area that is subtly defined by a sliding glass partition. This choice maintains a visual connection between spaces while offering a degree of privacy. In contrast, the bathroom and an expansive walk-in closet are fully enclosed. The closet, an essential feature for the fashion-forward client, is designed to be spacious and organized, reflecting a passion for aesthetics and personal style.Beyond its practical aspects, the apartment features a carefully curated design language that is both expressive and refined. Vibrant hues and a rich mix of textures infuse the space with personality while maintaining an overarching sense of harmony. Kukresh skillfully counterbalances the bold elements with a clean and structured layout, preventing the interior from feeling overwhelmed by decorative details. One of the key transformations involved addressing the apartments original non-orthogonal structure. Thoughtful adjustments were made to refine the spatial configuration while preserving as much usable area as possible. Another important consideration was lighting, given the apartments west-facing orientation. To counteract the variability of natural light, a warm-toned ceiling in a striking yellow hue was introduced, complemented by a well-planned artificial lighting system. This approach ensures a consistently inviting and luminous atmosphere, regardless of the time of day.Modern fluted tiles in a copper shade are juxtaposed with a more traditional marble backsplash and countertop in the kitchen area. Smoky gray cabinets tie the compact space together while complementing the remainder of the apartments contrasting elements.Apartment Ann showcases how small-scale living can be both luxurious and practical when guided by a thoughtful design philosophy. Kukreshs approach embraces individuality while maintaining a seamless flow, resulting in a home that is as visually compelling as it is comfortable. For more information, follow Natasha Kukresh on Instagram here.Photography courtesy of Sergey Pilipovich.

  • Susan Kare Brings Bling for Your Board With Esc Keys From Asprey
    design-milk.com
As keyboards have become a ubiquitous part of life, forever changing the way we work and communicate, Susan Kare has shaped that visual language. As a prolific graphic designer, she has designed the landscape of user interface design much more than can be quantitatively measured. Starting at Apple in 1983, she is the creator of many recognizable icons, including the Happy Mac, the bomb, and the floppy disk save icon, now synonymous with the action of saving, much like Google is to search. Esc Keys from Asprey Studio features 32 of these icons in both gilded keycap and limited-edition jewelry form, bringing a love of pixelated nostalgia to the board and body.Designer of the Geneva, Monaco, Chicago, and New York typefaces, she has had a hand in most computing interfaces and fonts we can recognize today. Susan is an influential and pioneering artist who works with reduced palettes and resolutions to convey, in an immediately understandable way, complex and often inexpressible tasks, shares Alastair Walker, Chief Creative Officer of Asprey Studio.Available as pendants or keycaps, all rendered in either silver or gold vermeil, each icon recalls a different era of computing, one seemingly of expansiveness and possibility. As tech companies steadily monopolize more and more aspects of daily life, we wonder, could we establish a new wave of nostalgic technology, and foster a more sustainable relationship to consumption with smaller and more intentional collections? There is hidden meaning to each of the designs in the collection, bitmaps telling a story of different interests people might like beyond the keyboard. Both a celebration of precious metals and a nod to computing history, the 32 keycap options heighten an otherwise utilitarian object into something one of a kind.Asprey Studio is a digital and contemporary art gallery, focusing on the dialogue between our lives off and online. A new venture for Asprey London, who has set a standard of excellence for over 200 years, Asprey Studio focuses on a zero waste process with made to order products, dramatically reducing excess throughout several steps of the process. This way they can offer a premium product in every sense, produced thoughtfully and made to last, much like the icons that dot the Esc Keys collection.Susan KareTo learn more about the Esc Keys collection, visit aspreystudio.com.Photography and graphics courtesy of Susan Kare and Asprey Studio.

  • Windows 11's Hidden FAQ Could Tell You Why Your PC Is So Slow
    lifehacker.com
If you've ever sat in front of your Windows PC wondering exactly what is causing it to run so sluggishly, some clarity may be on the way: Microsoft is testing a new FAQ page in Windows 11 that will analyze your system specs and give you some advice about why you might not be seeing top performance speeds. The feature is currently hidden away in the preview release of Windowsit's not even active in the earliest testing versionbut developer @phantomofearth.bsky.social has managed to access the relevant screens and find out how they work. The new page will apparently make its home in the System tab of Settings. As per the screens shared online, an example of a frequently asked question is: "Is my GPU sufficient for high end gaming and video experience? How can having a dedicated GPU enhance my experience and productivity?" The answer then explains that less than 4GB of memory for a GPU can lead to lower performance and visual quality. New Frequently Asked Questions list in Settings > System > About hidden in builds 26120.3576 and 22635.5090. Has some questions related to the Windows version and device specs. (vivetool /enable /id:55305888)[image or embed] phantomofearth (@phantomofearth.bsky.social) 17 March 2025 at 23:52Then there's: "How does having 4-8GB of RAM impact my PC's performance? Can I run modern applications smoothly with this RAM capacity?" The response explains that you'll be fine editing documents and browsing the web, though tasks such as photo and video editing may be more of a challenge for your system. These questions and answers will apparently be tailored to each specific system, so you'll only get information that's relevant to your own setup. This could potentially be pretty useful when it comes to figuring out what's slowing down the performance of your computer, or getting advice on which component needs an upgrade. It's worth bearing in mind that a huge chunk of Windows users aren't even going to know what RAM is, let alone how it impacts the performance of their system. For those users, I could see the FAQ section being helpfulcertainly more helpful than a dry list of system specs, which is all that's available right now. Right now, Windows 11 gives you a basic list of system specs. Credit: Lifehacker That said, the responses are a little on the generic side (I really hope Microsoft hasn't given Copilot the job of writing them). Information like "a high-end GPU can provide better graphics, smoother gameplay, and faster processing" isn't exactly a revelation, and doesn't really quantify how much improvement a user might see with a graphics card upgradeso some estimates on potential performance gains would be welcome. However, the more precise these FAQs get, the greater the risk of inaccuracies: Microsoft wouldn't want a user to be in the situation of buying an expensive GPU upgrade only to see minimal performance boosts because of a slow CPU, for example. Assessing PC speeds and the contribution of each component is a complicated business, which is probably why these FAQs are rather vague at the moment.Hopefully, Microsoft can work in some more specifics before this feature actually launches without running the risk of misleading users. Of course, a lot of the details also might change between now and whenever this gets pushed to all Windows usersif indeed it ever does see the light of day. But it's a potentially useful new addition to the OS that will provide some extra context to your system specs.

  • How to Enable 'Notification Cooldown' on Your Google Pixel
    lifehacker.com
While it's generally useful to get notifications on your phone, there are times when it's too much, too fast, such as after you disable Airplane Mode or when your family text thread is blowing up while you're in the middle of a meeting. On Android, you can turn on silent mode or snooze or disable notifications entirelyor you can rely on the new Notification Cooldown feature, which temporarily lowers the literal and figurative volume on your alerts so you don't have to manage those modes yourself. We've known this feature was coming for a while, and it finally arrived on Android 15 with the March 2025 update. How Notification Cooldown worksNotification Cooldown manages a deluge of alerts that come in over a short period of time by temporarily lowering your device's volume and minimizing on-screen pop-ups. The cooldown can last up to two minutes. Notifications don't disappear entirely when Notification Cooldown is enabled, so you don't need to worry about missing important alerts. You can still view them in the notification shade by pulling down from the top of your phone's screen. Calls, alarms, emergency alerts, and priority conversations will still come through during a cooldown. Unfortunately, there's no option to customize Notification Cooldownsuch as the alert threshold that triggers it, how long it lasts, and which apps are cooledother than turning the feature on or off. How to enable (or disable) Notification CooldownTo turn Notification Cooldown on or off on your Pixel device, open Settings and go to Notifications > Notification cooldown (under General). Use the toggle next to "Use notification cooldown" to enable or disable the feature. Notification Cooldown may be on by default, so you can opt out if you prefer not to use it. If you don't see this option in your phone's settings, make sure you've updated your device to the latest version of Android 15.

  • Tesla recalls more than 46,000 Cybertrucks over a faulty exterior panel
    www.engadget.com
Tesla is recalling more than 46,000 Cybertrucks due to a potential safety issue. According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the armored vehicle's cant rail (a cosmetic exterior trim panel) could detach from the truck, potentially leading to injury or a collision. The recall covers all 46,096 Cybertrucks manufactured between November 13, 2023, and February 27, 2025. Given that the vehicle launched in late 2023, that should be, well, just about all of them. The NHTSA filing states that owners of the vehicles can visit a Tesla service department for a free cant rail replacement. The recall is the latest in a recent downward slide for Tesla. Last month, its US sales reportedly fell two percent year over year even as the country's EV market grew by 16 percent. The automaker's picture is even gloomier in other regions: Its China sales plummeted by 49 percent (compared to 85 percent EV growth in the country) and sales dropped by 76 percent in Germany (vs. 31 percent EV growth there). That has resulted in Tesla's stock falling by over 40 percent since January. Elon Musk's DOGE shenanigans are leading to snowballing consequences not only for the US government but also for his EV company. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/transportation/evs/tesla-recalls-over-46000-cybertrucks-over-a-faulty-exterior-panel-153844072.html?src=rss

  • Amazon's Spring Sale includes this Dyson heater and fan for 36 percent off
    www.engadget.com
It's no secret that Dyson devices are pricey, but you can find good sales on them if you're patient and know where to look. Case in point, the Amazon Spring Sale: not only are a few Dyson cordless vacuums included amongst the discounts, but this Dyson Hot+Cool Jet Focus heater and fan is as well. You can snag it for $300, or $170 off its usual price. As its name suggests, the Dyson Hot+Cool AM09 Jet Focus can heat your room in the winter and cool it off in the summer. Its fan mode includes Air Multiplier tech, which creates a smooth and uninterrupted airstream thanks to its lack of traditional fan blades. When you need some warmth, its ceramic plates heat up quickly. The appliance has two modes: focused and diffused. Focused mode warms or cools one person, while diffused mode heats your entire room or provides a gentle breeze during the summer. It oscillates at a 70-degree angle. Dyson's fan has a sleep timer with a shutoff range between 15 minutes and nine hours, and you can store its curved and magnetized remote control inside the appliance to help prevent it from being lost. The lowest we've ever seen this product's price drop is $280, so being able to snag it for $300 in the middle of March, when we're nowhere near Black Friday or Prime Day, is about as good a deal as you can hope for. This article originally appeared on Engadget at https://www.engadget.com/deals/amazons-spring-sale-includes-this-dyson-heater-and-fan-for-36-percent-off-173031811.html?src=rss
