  • Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves vs. Garou: Mark of the Wolves 15 Differences You Need to Know
    gamingbolt.com
Decades ago, the thought of SNK ever releasing a follow-up to Garou: Mark of the Wolves, considered by many as one of the hallmark fighting games, seemed like a dream. Well, dreams thankfully come true with Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves launching on April 24th for Xbox Series X/S, PS4, PS5, and PC. Its a true-blue sequel in many ways, carrying over many of the same mechanics and characters while advancing the story. However, a lot has also changed. Lets review 15 of the biggest differences between Garou and City of the Wolves before the latters launch.Story ChangesBelieve it or not, South Town and its denizens have seen numerous changes ever since the Maximum Mayhem version of King of Fighters. Kain R. Heinlein discovers that his sister and Rocks mother is still alive and must team up with his nephew to rescue her in yet another tournament. Everyone else crosses paths once more, but whos the host this time? And what could they possibly have in store?New and Returning FightersLaunching with 14 playable characters, Garou: Mark of the Wolves was notable for featuring all-new fighters alongside Terry Bogard, the only veteran from Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves packs 17 playable characters and changes things up significantly. Billy Kane and Mai Shiranui arrive from other titles while almost everyone from Garou Kim Dong-Hwan, Marco Rodrigues, Tizoc, Hotaru Futaba, and more returns. Of course, you also have debuting fighters like Vox Reaper and Preecha.Playable BossIf that wasnt enough, Kain, previously limited to appearances and serving as the true final boss of Garou, is finally playable in City of the Wolves. His overall demeanor remains a mystery, but his attacks and mastery of fire are as deadly (and sleek) as ever.2D vs. 3D GraphicsAnother massive shift for the series is in the graphical style. Garou: Mark of the Wolves uses 2D character sprites and backgrounds, both looking absolutely gorgeous to this day. Meanwhile, City of the Wolves art style is fully 3D for characters and backgrounds, with its style taking multiple cues from The King of Fighters 15. It does feel more bombastic, with some animated flourishes that maintain that signature Garou feel, though.Episodes From South TownGarous Story Mode essentially entails fighting opponents in linear order defeating them with an AAA rank at minimum would eventually unlock Kain as the final boss and a special ending on his defeat. On the other hand, City of the Wolves offers Episodes from South Town, where you can wander around the map and challenge various fighters. Win battles and earn XP, new skills, and cosmetic options, making for a World Tour-like experience. Of course, the traditional Arcade Mode is still available for those who want that old-school experience.Improved Cosmetic CustomizationGarou: Mark of the Wolves didnt offer alternate outfits you could recolor a fighters base outfit from several set choices, but thats it. Not only does City of the Wolves have different outfits for characters like Terry and Mai, but it also has much more extensive color customization. You can separately adjust the colors for different pieces of clothing, set patterns, adjust texture size, and much more. Its a huge step up in all the right ways.T.O.P. and S.P.G.The T.O.P. System returns in City of the Wolves and functions like before. When your health is in a specific range, it activates and offers enhanced attacks, health regen up to that specific point, an additional special move, and more. Perhaps the biggest difference is that its now called the S.P.G. System and offers the ability to execute the new REV Blows.REV Combat SystemSpeaking of REV, its essentially the new combat system in City of the Wolves. Stronger versions of special moves encompass REV Arts, while REV Accel is used to chain attacks. The aforementioned REV Blows can help create space, though REV Guard is also good for breathing room if timed correctly. Compare all this to Garous more streamlined system, and theres a lot to learn.Overheat and More AggressionWhile Garou is a pretty balanced game in terms of attack and defense, City of the Wolves definitely leans into a more aggressive play style with the REV System. This is due to Overheat, which triggers when the REV Gauge is maxed out and prevents the usage of REV moves. While you can wait for it to gradually deplete, landing regular attacks on your opponent is the fastest way to make that happen. Its comparable to Street Fighter 6s Drive system, and Im keen to see just how much it dictates a matchs overall pace.Just Defense and Hyper DefenseJust Defend is a Garou players bread and butter when it comes to defense, providing a bit of health and a counterattack. This naturally returns in City of the Wolves, but on top of REV Guard, theres also Hyper Defense that can be used against multiple hits, expanding your defense even further.Smart Style ControlsLike Tekken 8s Special Style and Street Fighter 6s Modern Style, Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves features Smart Style for newcomers. You can execute Smart Combos by pressing Circle on PlayStation and Combination Attacks with Square when up close. However, youll miss out on high-level features only available in Arcade Style, like feints. Garou never offered such a control scheme, only sticking to the traditional setup.Cross-Platform PlayConsidering it first launched in 1999 for arcades before making its way to home consoles from 2001 onwards, the very state of online play in fighting games would hinder Garous reach. Of course, its since been updated over the years, even receiving cross-platform play in subsequent updates. Fatal Fury: City of the Wolves, thankfully, offers cross-play out of the box, allowing PC and console players to go head to head from launch.Launching With Rollback NetcodeAs acclaimed as Garou remains among the FGC, it wouldnt receive rollback netcode until January 2020, courtesy of Code Mystics, who also implemented the same for The King of Fighters 97, KOF 98 Ultimate Match, and KOF 2002 Unlimited Match. Thankfully, City of the Wolves players wont have to wait long, as its available at launch.Playable Street Fighter CharactersWith Terry and Mai jumping over to Street Fighter as DLC characters in Street Fighter 6, it only makes sense that Capcom sends its best fighters to South Town. In a first for Fatal Fury as a whole, Ken and Chun-Li will be guest characters in City of the Wolves, with the former out this Summer and the latter launching in Winter.Post-Launch SupportGarou receiving extensive post-launch support and new characters would have been the dream back in the day. Fortunately, SNK already has plans in motion for City of the Wolves. Its first Season Pass is included with the Special Edition, which retails for $59.99 and is the only edition available. You can also expect at least three years of post-launch support, meaning even more characters and new features alongside balance adjustments.

  • Lower-Class Workers May Have Been Buried in Ancient Egyptian Pyramids Alongside Elites
    www.smithsonianmag.com
A granite statue located in Tombos, an ancient Egyptian outpost in present-day Sudan Sue Fleckney via Wikimedia Commons under CC BY-SA 2.0Historians have long assumed that ancient Egyptian pyramids were constructed primarily for royals and high-status individualsthose with the money and power required to build such grand structures. But new research at the archaeological site ofTombos in present-day Sudan is complicating that narrative. According to a recent study published in theJournal of Anthropological Archaeology, Tombos pyramids may have served as the final resting place for low-status workers alongside elites. We can no longer assume that individuals buried in grandiose [pyramid] tombs are the elite, write the researchers. Indeed, the hardest working members of the communities are associated with the most visible monuments.Situated along the Nile River, Tombos lies in the ancient region ofNubia. In around 1400 B.C.E., Egypt conquered the area and established Tombos to facilitate colonial control, according to the study. Workers built pyramids in the area, though they were modest in comparison to famous examples like the pyramids ofGiza.Researchers recently reanalyzed 110 human skeletons from Tombos that had originally been studied in 2012. They examined the skeletonsenthesesthe places where tendons and ligaments connect to boneswhich can hint at how much physical labor an individual has performed. A map and details of two tombs in Tombos' northern cemetery Stuart Tyson Smith / Journal of Anthropological ArchaeologyWhen someone performs intensive labor, their tendons and ligaments require a stronger mode of attachment, per the study. Their bones may develop distinct crests and ridges at the point of attachment.Entheseal changes cant tell us exactly what these people were doing, but they can tell us if they were more physically active or more like couch potatoes, lead authorSarah Schrader, an archaeologist at Leiden University in the Netherlands, tellsBBC Science Focus Hatty Willmoth. Some of the bones exhibited little entheseal change, indicating that they had belonged to the members of the upper classes. But the team found more extensive entheseal changes on others, suggesting that they once belonged to lower-class workers. This could potentially shake up what we know about the pyramids, Schrader tells BBC Science Focus. In the past, weve just assumed that the people who were buried in there were the elite, because we know that the pyramids were designed for elite people. That still holds true, but maybe there were others being buried in the pyramids as well. From past excavations, researchers know the names and roles of many individuals buried in Tombos. Roland Enmarch, an Egyptologist at theUniversity of Liverpool who wasnt involved in the study, says that many Egyptian pyramids from this period were built for high-status individuals who werent royalty. A map of the Tombos cemetery Journal of Anthropological ArchaeologyWere very much looking at the later half of Egyptian history, when more impressive non-royal tombs would often have a pyramid as part of the mud-brick superstructure of the tomb, he tells BBC Science Focus.Who, then, are the lower-class individuals buried with them? Researchers think they may have worked for the elites as servants. As Schrader tellsLive Sciences Owen Jarus, there are several possible explanations for why people in these groups were buried together. One theory is that Tombos elites wished to enforce class structures even in death. To this end, they may have imposed a hierarchical social order on the sacred landscape of the cemetery, per the study. Our thinking is that elites surrounded themselves with the non-elites who worked in some capacity for them, effectively replicating the social order with burials in and around their funerary monuments, co-authorStuart Tyson Smith, an anthropologist at the University of California at Santa Barbara, tells Live Science.Smith adds that lower-class individuals may have favored these burial practices, too, hoping to benefit from associations with their employers in terms of status, magical protections and the funerary cult.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.Filed Under: Africa, African History, Ancient Civilizations, Ancient Egypt, Archaeology, Bones, Death, Egypt, History, New Research, Rituals and Traditions, Sudan, Wealth

  • Gutenberg Bible Reunited With Rare 15th-Century Devotional Print Once Tucked Inside Its Pages
    www.smithsonianmag.com
Stephen Tabor with the Huntington Library's copy of the Gutenberg Bible The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical GardensWhen railroad magnateHenry E. Huntington bought arare edition of theGutenberg Bible in 1911, he paid $55,000the equivalent of around $1.8 million today. But despite the high price, Huntingtons 15th-century Bible was incomplete. In 1825, an auctioneer had removed three devotional prints contained within the Bibles pages since the 1450s to sell separately. For two centuries, the Bible and its prints remained separated. Last spring, Stephen Tabor, theHuntington Librarys curator of rare books, heard about an upcoming sale of one of the prints, Christ on the Mount of Olives, according toArtnets Richard Whiddington. The Huntington jumped at the prospect of finally getting its Bible one page closer to completion. After months of research, paperwork, licensing and fundraising, the print arrived at the library in San Marino, California, in September in a wooden casket befitting a lost ark, as Tabor says, per the librarys website. They will be on public display together at the library until May 26.Christ on the Mount of Oliveswas likely added to the Gutenberg Bible by its first owner in the 1450s or 1460s. The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical GardensReuniting the print with the Huntingtons Bible deepens our understanding of this landmark of printinghow it was used and valuedenriching both scholarship and public appreciation, Sandra Brooke Gordon, the director of the Huntington Library, says in astatement. In the 1450s,Johannes Gutenberg created about 180 copies of the Bible using movable type. He printed roughly 145 copies on paper and 35 on vellum, parchment made from calfskin.Gutenbergs innovationsrevolutionized the way our ancestors made books and accessed information. Hundreds of years later, however, only about 50 copies are known to exist.Eric White, a Gutenberg scholar and rare books curator at Princeton University, says the vellum copy that Huntington bought in 1911 is the most beautiful copy in the world, according to the statement. It is one of only three vellum editions in the United States, including one at theLibrary of Congress in Washington, D.C. and one at theMorgan Library and Museum in New York. Henry E. Huntington bought the Bible for $55,000 in 1911. The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical GardensThe print is perhaps even rarer. It depicts Christ in prayer on the night before his crucifixion. Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me, Christ says in a Latin inscription. His disciples are asleep next to him, but betrayal is at hand. In the upper right corner, Judas leads Roman soldiers to Christ, saying, He whom I shall kiss, He is the one, seize him.Originally affixed within the covers of the Bible, the print exemplifies the dotted metal cut technique. To create the print, tiny holes were punched into a thin metal plate, leaving a highly detailed and stylized black-and-white ink image that was later colored by hand. Its an example of a very specialized style from a limited area of Europe, Tabor tells Erik Pedersen of theSan Gabriel Valley Tribune, adding that the technique was practiced near the Rhine river in Germany.Tabor suspects that the first owner of the Bible added the three printsincluding another scene of Christ on the Mount of Olives (owned by the University of Manchester) and one depicting the crucifixion (owned by the British Museum)in the 1450s or 1460s. Eric White says the Huntington's Bible is "the most beautiful copy in the world." The Huntington Library, Art Museum and Botanical GardensWhy these private devotional prints were put inside indicates to me that it was probably a private buyer who got the Bible originally and not an institution like a monastery or a church, Tabor tells the San Gabriel Valley Tribune. Either way, it would have to be a wealthy buyer. However, why a private citizen would have bought a two-volume copy of the Gutenberg Bible in the 1450s is unclear, Tabor adds. There are two volumes. Each ones 25 pounds. Youre not going to curl up in bed with it, Tabor tells theSan Gabriel Valley Tribune. It was really designed as a lectern Bible, or something you stand to read from, a formal sort of Bible.By the time of the 1825 auction, the Bible and its prints had stayed together for nearly four centuries. After another two centuries apart, Christ on the Mount of Olives and the Gutenberg Bible have finally been reunited. The Bible is not a dead museum piece; it still holds surprises for those who look closely enough, Tabor says in the statement. Thats exactly what weve been doing in recent monthsinspired by the return of the Christ on the Mount of Olives. Our discoveries about our Gutenberg Bibles history and unique features have been accelerating ever since.Get the latest stories in your inbox every weekday.Filed Under: Artifacts, Bible, Books, California, Christianity, European History, Exhibitions, Exhibits, Germany, Historical Documents, History, Library of Congress, Religion, Religious History

  • UC Santa Cruz professor roleplays gig economy, publisher negotiation, and layoffs with game design students
    www.gamedeveloper.com
Aron Garst, ContributorMarch 25, 20254 Min ReadVia Pexels user ANTONI SHKRABA productionThe game industryalong with a major part of the American workforceis in a bad place at the moment. We've seen a huge amount of workers, both creative, administrative, and technical, suffer massive layoffs and restructurings. Even the teams behind hugely successive gameslike the Seattle-based team responsible for part of Marvel Rivalshave been laid off. That's part of the reason why Retora Games founder and adjunct professor Tyler Coleman has been creating unique class exercises and role play scenarios to help his students think about what sort of problems they might run into after they graduate."The best lessons come from failure, so how do we teach that in a hands-on way to our classes?" Coleman said, posing a question to an audience at his Game Developers Conference talk. "By not teaching them [these things] we are not preparing our students for the worst."Coleman has run some of his classes through one of four different experiments, each spanning a the majority of the school term, to prepare students for handling the tough environment of the gig economy, negotiating with unreasonable publishers and clients, dealing with the variety of hardships studios often experience, and handling the emotional toll of being laid off.Forcing failure with careRelated:One point Coleman emphasized before diving into each hands on exercise is that he was looking for feedback and ways to improve. These experiments had "mixed results," according to him and he was wary of negatively impacting his students and the way they viewed their own work."Forcing people to fail should be treated with care," he said. "As you do run a risk of creating real trauma if not planned carefully."The experiment that stood out most was Coleman's Rapid Prototyping class, which had a group of students produce multiple small games in various groups throughout the school term. The program ended with the entire class working together on one project, with separate groups of students within the class representing different teams within a AAA studio."The whole thing was doomed from the start," Coleman said. "They were using a 5 year old version of Unity they hadn't worked with before. The teacher (me) was intentionally bad with communicating design and intent. We had regular unexpected changes in the design bible."Coleman had meant for his teams to fail and heposing as a senior figure in this fictitious studio was the main antagonist for this experience. At the end of the program, Coleman held a meeting with all the teams and told them that they were being let go. All the work they produced was owned by the fake company that employed them. He posed a question to his students, what would you do if you couldn't use any of the work from this past term? In reality the work was owned by the students, but he challenged them with a scary possibility that may very well hit them one day.Related:Pros and consSeveral elements of the experiment went well, according to Coleman. Some of his students felt the emotional toll of losing their jobs. While stressful, it helped them understand that situations like that are often completely out of their control. There was nothing they could have done differently to prevent the layoffs. Many students reacted poorly to the news, but Coleman believed it was good for them to experience it in this type of situation rather than in the real world where they'd have to pay rent and other bills."It also led them to update their resumes and LinkedIn profiles," he said, emphasizing that he wasn't pro-layoff in any way. "It helped them understand that the best thing you can do is connect to everyone else and build a network."Other elements didn't go as well. Several students thought they had failed the class, which made them panic. The bombshell of the layoff also happened at the very end of the quarter, which completely killed any excitement the class had heading into the end of the term. Luckily the class didn't fail, they received "severance A," according to Coleman. He plans to clearly communicate that the students could not fail this experiment going forward.Related:The experiments that Coleman ran were unorthodox, but quite relevant in an industry that's repeatedly shown that its workers can be let go at a moments notice to help improve quarter over quarter fiscal showings.Coleman detailed a few things that he'd like to do differently going forward, including making some sort of time for actual lecturing as several of his experiments involved his students roleplaying. Those sessions could take hours and often ended up leaving no time for him to talk to his students directly at length about what they were doing, how they felt about it, and what he hoped they would learn. The game design professor also plans to possibly change the schedule of when he plans to "lay off" his students, making sure that it's midway through the term so that he can leave time for retrospectives and feedback and simulate what comes after a layoffwhich is usually other opportunities and work.Read more about:GDC 2025FeaturesTop StoriesAbout the AuthorAron GarstContributorSee more from Aron GarstDaily news, dev blogs, and stories from Game Developer straight to your inboxStay UpdatedYou May Also Like

  • This man is not our boss EPA workers rally against DOGE cuts
    www.theverge.com
Environmental Protection Agency workers took to the streets across the US today to protest drastic cuts President Donald Trump and Elon Musks DOGE have made at the federal agency whose mission is to protect human health and the environment. Musk, the face of DOGE and the target of growing protests at Tesla dealerships, was a bigger name at the rally than Trump. How do you spell corruption? E-L-O-N workers and their supporters chanted at a picket line in front of a federal building in New York City. Some held signs with this man is not our boss written in red over a sketch of Musks face. More than 150 people rallied with picket signs chanting Move, DOGE, get out the way, to the tune of a Ludacris song, and What do we do when clean land/air/water/science is under attack? Stand up, fight back! The workers, represented by union AFGE Council 238, held marches in 8 cities as part of a National Day of Action. Plans to dismantle much of the agency and weaken protections against pollution put Americans at risk, EPA workers warn.I work on enforcing regulations that deal with hazardous waste and toxic substances, which is work that I feel is not a partisan issue.I work on enforcing regulations that deal with hazardous waste and toxic substances, which is work that I feel is not a partisan issue, says Suzanne Englot, an attorney who works in enforcement at the EPA. Everyone wants to make sure that hazardous waste and toxic substances are properly regulated, disposed of, stored and all of that. But in these times, it makes me nervous that things are going to change. The EPA, under Trumps executive orders, is now barred from taking any enforcement or compliance actions that would shut down any stage of energy production unless theres an imminent and substantial health threat, according to a memo that EPA leadership issued on March 12th.On the same day, EPA administrator Lee Zeldin announced what he called the greatest day of deregulation our nation has seen, proposing rollbacks on dozens of rules meant to curb pollution from power plants, oil and gas refineries, chemical plants, cars and trucks, factories, and more. The Trump administration has also moved to shutter the agencys scientific research office and environmental justice offices. Trump has mused about cutting the EPAs budget by 65 percent. Around 1,100 probationary employees at the EPA received notice in January telling them the agency has the right to immediately terminate you. A federal judge later ordered the Trump administration to rehire hundreds of workers who had been laid off at the agency. And the White House faces more legal challenges over its dismantling of federal agencies and deregulation spree. Both Trump and billionaire-backer Musk complained about regulations slowing companies down during last years election season. It costs much more to do things environmentally clean, Trump said in an interview with Joe Rogan on October 25th. Weve got to have sensible spending. And weve got to have deregulation . Im pro-environment, [but] I dont think we should vilify the oil and gas industry because theyre keeping civilization going right now, Musk said in his X interview with Trump on August 12th. Musk later wielded a chainsaw for bureaucracy at the Conservative Political Action Conference stage last month. Across the street from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) offices in lower Manhattan, EPA workers in gather to protest funding and staffing cuts.Elon is perpetuating a climate of fear and targeting federal workers and the mission that they carry out to protect human health and the environment, EPA environmental engineer Harper Stanfield told The Verge at the rally in New York City. We cant let EPA be silenced by billionaires.Trump has accepted tens of millions of dollars in funding from the oil and gas industry. Elon Musk spent more than $250 million helping Trump get elected. The president then handed Musk the power to dramatically makeover federal agencies through his post leading the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). In an email to The Verge, the EPA said that its listening to employees and made cuts to comply with Trumps agenda to eliminate programs it considers diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives.Stanfield and Englot said at the rally today that theyre calling on Congress to act as a check on the executive branch, and asking people to reach out to their elected representatives to support the EPAs work. Democrat, Republican, independent, whoever it is, everyone is impacted by this, Englot says. EPAs work touches everyones lives.See More:
