Linux Windows 11 dual boot to finally play well as Microsoft fixes nine-month old bug Sayan Sen Neowin · May 15, 2025 01:48 EDT It is known that Patch Tuesday updates can often lead to big issues and something just like that happened last year in August. The security update had broken dual-booting Windows 11 and Linux systems as GNU distros like Debian, Ubuntu, Linux Mint, Zorin OS, Puppy Linux, were all affected. A couple of days later, Microsoft provided a slightly lengthy workaround that involved tweaking around with policies and the Registry in order to fix the problem. The company also explained that the root of the issue was a buggy SBAT (Secure Boot Advanced Targeting) implementation in the Windows 11 August Patch Tuesday KB5041585. For those who may be wondering, SBAT helps block outdated and potentially vulnerable bootloaders by checking the Secure Boot DBX. The Secure Boot DBX is a database of blacklisted UEFI executables. Microsoft explained: After installing the August 2024 Windows security update, (KB5041585) or the August 2024 preview update, you might face issues with booting Linux if you have enabled the dual-boot setup for Windows and Linux in your device. Resulting from this issue, your device might fail to boot Linux and show the error message “Verifying shim SBAT data failed: Security Policy Violation. Something has gone seriously wrong: SBAT self-check failed: Security Policy Violation.” The August 2024 Windows security and preview updates apply a Secure Boot Advanced Targeting (SBAT) setting to devices that run Windows to block old, vulnerable boot managers. This SBAT update will not be applied to devices where dual booting is detected. On some devices, the dual-boot detection did not detect some customized methods of dual-booting and applied the SBAT value when it should not have been applied. The problem has been resolved this week with the latest May 2025 Patch Tuesday under KB5058405. This also happens to be the first Windows 11 Hotpatch update. Fintech startup Klarna is now recruiting humans after its AI customer service agents underperformed. The buy-now-pay-later company, which eliminated its marketing contracts in 2023 and customer service team in 2024, now plans an "Uber-type setup" with remote gig workers. This marks a stark reversal from CEO Sebastian Siemiatkowski's 2024 claim that "AI can already do all of the jobs that we, as humans, do." Siemiatkowski told Bloomberg: "From a brand perspective, I just think it's so critical that you are clear to your customer that there will be always a human if you want." Twenty-six years ago, a role-playing game based on the Harry Potter books was pitched and even received a demo. However, it never developed into a full game and only recently became known to the public through a museum tour.The Strong National Museum of Play in Rochester, New York, had kept some footage of this project. Andrew Borman, the museum's director of digital preservation, told GamesRadar+ that Volition, the developer behind the iconic Saints Row franchise, wanted to recreate the world from the books in a video game. Remember, it was 1999, two years before Electronic Arts' Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone came out, so there was no visual reference at that time. The footage, though can't be shared, presented a game which is "pretty much just PS1-era Harry and Hagrid wandering around a small, unpopulated, unfinished town." The outlet described its environment and characters would resemble what a "Baldur's Gate-style top-down RPG" could provide.Although no videos here, we're lucky to see some of the screenshots. There is a loading page and a scene showing tiny Harry and Hagrid standing together:The demo, which allowed you to switch characters freely but offered few other actions, was developed over roughly a couple of weeks, according to Borman. He also revealed a detail when the game was pitched: "The story is that, when Volition and THQ pitched this game, at least some of the THQ executives came dressed in robes and had owls with them."Unfortunately, the idea and demo did not evolve into a game, and the project seemed to stop there without any known reason. Last year, Italian games studio Two Little Mice struck a deal to have Swedish tabletop publisher Free League distribute the Ennie-winning game Outgunned, which lets gaming groups play out heist or action movies like Ocean’s Eleven and Mission: Impossible. As part of that deal, Free League just released the first book in Outgunned’s genre line, Outgunned Adventure, which focuses on pulp films like Indiana Jones, The Mummy, and Tomb Raider. The standalone book uses Outgunned’s Director’s Cut RPG system, which has players roll between two and nine six-sided dice and score successes based on how many land on the same face. As the name suggests, characters are meant to be outmatched by dastardly villains they need to face through shootouts and fast talking. Failure is common, but PCs can “fail with style” — for instance, getting lost while searching for something might mean the players find something they weren’t expecting. Being too noisy on an infiltration might just lead to an exciting fight with a dangerous enemy they hoped to avoid. The $51 core rulebook includes 10 new roles, like Scoundrel, Technician, and Captain. Those combine with action movie tropes to provide a wide range of character options. Alt-Tab opens the app switcher, which lets you quickly bring a different app to the foreground. You can use it to quickly swap between two open apps, or to cycle between all of your open apps. But what you might not know is that the app switcher can so a lot more than that. I'm here to walk you through the best tricks hidden in the commonly used Windows feature.Cycle through open appsHold down the Alt key and keep pressing Tab to open the app switcher and cycle through all your open apps. Once you release the shortcut, the selected app will come to the foreground. You can also cycle through this list in reverse order by holding Alt-Shift and pressing the Tab key repeatedly.Stop the app switcher from auto-hidingThe app switcher's temporary nature is a bit annoying sometimes. The moment you release Alt-Tab, the app switcher disappears. You can get around this by pressing Alt-Ctrl-Tab. Now, you're free to release the keyboard shortcut and keep the app switcher happily floating above all your open apps. Use arrow keys to cycle through your list of open apps, or use the mouse to directly pick the app you need. The Belgian Court of Appeal ruled today that the Transparency and Consent Framework (TCF) currently used as the foundation for most online advertising is illegal in the EU. This decision upholds the findings of the Belgian Data Protection Authority from 2022 that the technology underpinning online ads violates several principles of the General Data Protection Regulations, an EU digital privacy law that took effect in 2018. Engadget's Daniel Cooper wrote a thorough explainer of the different systems that support the current online advertising ecosystem, which is valuable reading for anybody spending time online. The very simplified version is that advertisers participate in real-time bidding (RTB) to show their content online. Currently, those bids are based on information gathered from tracking individuals' activities online with cookies. The TCF was created by the Interactive Advertising Bureau as a way to standardize how websites ask users for permission to be tracked. The original 2022 decision determined that both the consent collected by the TCF and the data collected in the RTB process were illegal under the GDPR. "Today's court's decision shows that the consent system used by Google, Amazon, X, Microsoft, deceives hundreds of millions of Europeans," said Dr Johnny Ryan, director of Enforce at the Irish Council for Civil Liberties, who has been leading the legal charge against the current approach to ad tech. "The tech industry has sought to hide its vast data breach behind sham consent popups. Tech companies turned the GDPR into a daily nuisance rather than a shield for people." The reaction from IAB Europe, which filed the appeal, seems to mostly be relief that it hasn't been found responsible for the data collected by TCF. "The Market Court has rejected the APD’s view that IAB Europe is a joint controller together with TCF participants for their own respective processing of personal data, for instance for the purpose of digital advertising," the organization's statement says. IAB Europe notes that it has already suggested changes to the TCF that better reflect the "limited controllership" and submitted them to the Belgian Data Protection Authority. The group faced fines and was ordered to rebuild its current ad-tech framework as a result of the original decision. We've also reached out to some of the major advertisers that use the RTB technology for comment on the ruling. While this does seem like a big win for privacy advocates and internet users in the EU, it's unclear exactly what the next steps will be for advertisers and for ad tech systems.
