So she hires a personalized concierge service to help her get a ticket. But of course the concierge is handsome and charming Who will she choose? Will she get to see Pentatonix live?New on HuluPoolmanWhere to watch: Available to stream on HuluGenre: Mystery comedyRun time: 1h 40mDirector: Chris PineCast: Chris Pine, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Danny DeVitoChris Pines directorial debut stars himself as Darren, a unflinchingly optimistic pool cleaner in Los Angeles whos also determined to make his community a better place la Erin Brockovich (though the local city council is increasingly annoyed by him). After being contacted by a beautiful and mysterious woman, Darren embarks on a quest to unearth corruption in the city.New on Prime VideoLook BackWhere to watch: Available to stream on Prime VideoGenre: Coming-of-age dramaRun time: 58mDirector: Kiyotaka OshiyamaCast: Yuumi Kawai, Mizuki YoshidaBased on the one-shot manga by Chainsaw Man author Tatsuki Fujimoto, Kiyotaka Oshiyamas coming-of-age anime drama centers on the life and friendship of Fujino (Yuumi Kawai) and Kyomoto (Mizuki Yoshida), two grade school classmates who bond over their shared love and passion for drawing manga. We added it to our list of the best animated features of the year, so you should definitely check it out.My Old AssWhere to watch: Available to stream on Prime VideoGenre: ComedyRun time: 1h 29mDirector: Megan ParkCast: Aubrey Plaza, Maisy Stella, Percy Hynes WhiteIn this time-wimey comedy, a teenage girl named Elliot (Maisy Stella) does alotof shrooms and somehow ends up in contact with her 39-year-old self (Aubrey Plaza). Her older self has lots of words of wisdom but one big warning: Dont fall in love with the cute boy working on her familys cranberry farm that summer. Stella and Plaza share a very easy and fun chemistry that makes their interactions a delight to watch. And the movie is especially poignant in the lessons that both versions of Elliot take from each other. From our review:Beyond the time-travel setup,My Old Asss most immediate hook is the leads and their easy rapport. This movie could have just been a collection of hijinks and jokes about touching your older selfs butt. But Park uses the timey-wimey elements to craft a story about those unheralded last moments, the ones we dont realize will be watersheds on the way to growing up. Younger Elliott is eager to leave everything behind and move on to her next great adventure, but older Elliott is able to offer some perspective. At the same time, older Elliott gets to savor her bygone youth and tap into the days of being a fearless teenager who could conquer the world. My Old Assis about growing up the joy, the pain, and those little moments that resonate with us far longer than we think they will and Park smartly pulls it off by drawing on Elliotts perspectives of both the past and the present.New on ShudderBlack CabWhere to watch: Available to stream on ShudderGenre: HorrorRun time: 1h 27mDirector: Bruce GoodisonCast: Nick Frost, Synnove Karlsen, Luke NorrisThis new horror movie, c0-written by Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead), stars Synnove Karlsen (Last Night in Soho) and Luke Norris (The Duchess) as a couple who hail a black cab after a night out with their friends. • Vampire Survivors Ode to Castlevania is more than just a tribute
    www.polygon.com
Action-survival roguelike Vampire Survivors is already one of the best deals in gaming. For five bucks, you get an endlessly replayable time sink thats stuffed with unlockable characters, dozens of weapons to experiment with, and clever secrets to discover. The games most recent add-on, Ode to Castlevania, somehow manages to make the original offering feel anemic by comparison.Maybe thats a slight exaggeration, but Vampire Survivors: Ode to Castlevania under-promises what it actually offers for an extra $3.99. This is more than just a love letter to three decades of Castlevania games; its an exhaustive homage to the very inspiration behind Vampire Survivors.Ode to Castlevania includes a massive new stage to explore, one thats vaguely Draculas Castle-shaped. Theres some inspiration from Castlevania: Symphony of the Night to its structure, as the map includes recreations of boss arenas and teleportation rooms that can zip you around its huge footprint. But exploring on foot is one of the best ways to appreciate what developer Poncle has built here with its tribute to the Metroidvania-style maps that repopularized the Castlevania series.Poncle advertised Ode to Castlevania with 20-plus new characters, including various Belmonts, Belnades, good ol Alucard, and plenty of series deep cuts. Without spoiling any surprises, 20-plus is hilariously underselling just how many new characters players can unlock and play with in the DLC.The action itself hasnt changed much. Veteran Vampire Survivors players will fall right into the games routine of dodging hordes of enemies while scrounging for XP and strategizing their randomized build. But Ode to Castlevania includes massive amounts of secrets, new weapons to equip (including eight new whips alone), and more than a few surprising variations on standard Vampire Survivors gameplay. Players will easily sink dozens of hours into the DLC to experience everything.Vampire Survivors: Ode to Castlevania offers more than just more. Its something of a glow-up for the game too, as the enemy sprites borrowed from and inspired by the 2D Castlevania games are nicer than what Poncles offered in the past some of which felt like knock-off, legally distinct versions of graphic elements made by Konami. And for the Castlevania music enthusiast, virtually every memorable tune and theme from that series is represented here in some form.Ode to Castlevania is a fitting title for Poncles latest expansion for Vampire Survivors. Its clear that the love for the franchise that led to Vampire Survivors creation is on display here. With Ode to Castlevania, the games creators are now sharing that love with all of us.Vampire Survivors and Ode to Castlevania are available on Android, iOS, Mac, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X, giving nearly everyone the opportunity to enjoy a piece of Castlevania nostalgia.

  • Alternatives To Typical Technical Illustrations And Data Visualisations
    smashingmagazine.com
Good technical illustrations and data visualisations allow users and clients to, in a manner of speaking, take time out, ponder and look at the information in a really accessible and engaging way. It can obviously also help you communicate certain categories of information and data. The aim of the article is to inspire and show you how, by using different technical illustrations and data visualisations, you can really engage and communicate with your users and do much more good for the surrounding content.Below are interesting and not commonly seen examples of technical illustration and data visualisation, that show data and information. As you know, more commonly seen examples are bar graphs and pie charts, but there is so much more than that! So, keep reading and looking at the following examples, and I will show you some really cool stuff.TechnologyTypically, technical illustration and data visualisations were done using paper, pens, pencils, compasses, and rulers. But now everything is possible you can do analog and digital. Since the mainstream introduction of the internet, around 1997, data (text, numerical, symbol) has flourished, and it has become the current day gold currency. It is easy for anyone to learn who has the software or knows the coding language. And it is much easier to do technical illustrations and data visualisation than in previous years. But that does not always mean that what is done today is better than what was done before. What Makes Data And Information GoodIt must be aesthetically pleasing, interesting, and stimulating to look at.It must be of value and worth the effort to read and digest the information. It must be easy to understand and logical. To convey ideas effectively, both aesthetic form and functionality need to go hand in hand, as Vitaly Friedman in his article Data Visualization and Infographics has pointed out.It must be legible and have well-named and easy-to-understand axes and labels. It should help explain and show data and information in a more interesting way than if it were presented in tabular form.It should help explain or unpack what is written in any surrounding text and make it come to life in an unusual and useful way.It must be easy to compare and contrast the data against the other data. The Importance Of Knowing About Different AudiencesThere are some common categories of audiences:Expert,Intermediate,Beginner,Member of the public,Child,Teenager,Middle-aged,Ageing,Has some prior knowledge,Does not have any prior knowledge,Person with some kind of disability (vision, physical, hearing, mobility).Sara Dholakia in her article A Guide To Getting Data Visualization Right points out the following considerations:The audiences familiarity with the subject matter of your data; How much context they already have versus what you should provide;Their familiarity with various methods of data visualisation.Just look at what we are more often than not presented with. So, let us dive into some cool examples that you can understand and start using today that will also give your work and content a really cool edge and help it stand out and communicate better.3D Flow DiagramIt provides a great way to show relationships and connections between items and different components, and the 3D style adds a lot to the diagram.Card DiagramIts an effective way to highlight and select information or data in relation to its surrounding data and information.Pyramid GraphBeing great at showing two categories of information and comparing them horizontally, they are an alternative to typical horizontal or vertical bar graphs.3D Examples Of Common GraphsThey are an excellent way to enliven overused 2D pie and bar graphs. 3D examples of common graphs give a real sense of quality and depth whilst enhancing the data and information much more than 2D versions.Sankey Flow DiagramThis diagram is a good way to show the progression and the journey of information and data and how they are connected in relation to their data value. It's not often seen, but it's really cool.Stream GraphA stream graph is a great way to show the data and how it relates to the other data much more interesting than just using lines as is typically seen.3D MapIt provides an excellent way to show a map in a different and more interesting form than the typically seen 2D version. It really gives the map a sense of environment, depth, and atmosphere.Tree MapIts a great way to show the data spatially and how the data value relates, in terms of size, to the rest of the data.Waterfall ChartA waterfall chart is helpful in showing the data and how it relates in a vertical manner to the range of data values.Doughnut ChartIt shows the data against the other data segments and also as a value within a range of data.Lollipop ChartA lollipop chart is an excellent method to demonstrate percentage values in a horizontal manner that also integrates the label and data value well.Bubble ChartIts an effective way to illustrate data values in terms of size and sub-classification in relation to the surrounding data. How To Start Doing Technical Illustration And Data VisualisationThere are many options available, including specialized software like Flourish, Tableau, and Klipfolio; familiar tools like Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint (with redrawing in software like Adobe Illustrator, Affinity Designer, or CorelDRAW); or learning coding languages such as D3, Three.js, P5.js, WebGL, or the Web Audio API, as Frederick OBrien discusses in his article Web Design Done Well: Delightful Data Visualization Examples. But there is one essential ingredient that you will always need, and that is a mind and vision for technical illustration and data visualisation.Worthwhile Practitioners And Links To Look AtStefanie PosavecYuri Engelhardt Giorgia Lupi Edward Tufte Information is Beautiful Awards

  • These Playful 3D-Printed Lamps Take Sustainability Seriously
    design-milk.com
In an industry that produces stunning yet sometimes austere designs, it is refreshing to discover work that doesnt take itself too seriously. Simultaneously, it is inspiring to see that the designers behind the work are very serious about their craft. Emil Robbrecht, a Ghent-based designer, is one such creative force. His commitment to sustainability drives him to use eco-friendly materials alongside cutting-edge 3D-printing technology, all while infusing his designs with a playful touch.DancerRobbrechts latest creations, the Dancer and Big Boa lamps, are a testament to his whimsical approach. Though modest in size, these lamps give main character energy, commanding attention with their unique and striking forms. Despite their playful appearance the lamps represent serious craftsmanship a culmination of Robbrechts three years of experience honing his skills and exploring the possibilities of sustainable design.Big BoaBoth lamps feature a simple orb-like light source, but their 3D-printed forms set them apart. The Dancer, with its sculptural feet, seems poised to break into dance at any moment. Meanwhile, Big Boa, true to its reptilian namesake, appears ready to slither away, with the light source clearly representing the head. Both are 3D printed using recycled plant-based plastic from food packaging waste and are made to order in Robbrechts home studio. To get to know Robbrecht and his lamps a little better, we chatted with him below:Your designs, like the Dancer and Big Boa lamps, blend playfulness with serious craftsmanship. How do you strike the balance between whimsy and functionality in your creations? What comes first? When I have a design idea in mind, Im quite determined not to compromise aesthetics for the sake of functionality. For instance, with the Dancer lamp, the glass globe appears to be trapped within the structure, which required the lamp to be made in three separate parts to allow for bulb replacement. After numerous iterations, I managed to make the seam nearly invisible by using a snap-fit joint as the connecting mechanism. This not only enhances the overall design but also raises intriguing questions about how the lamp was made.By prioritizing aesthetics, I believe it offers customers a unique experience in how they interact with the lamps. The way the lamp is positioned also allows it to look different from every angle, which I think the photographers have captured beautifully. My first lamp design, Big Boa, taught me a great deal about the technical aspects of lamp design, which allowed me to focus more on bringing originality and complexity to the Dancer lamp. With the Dancer lamp, I aimed to create an object that raises questions about its construction both in terms of materials, as its hard to tell its 3D printed, and functionality, as people wonder how the glass shade got in there. I think this curiosity is one of the reasons why the Dancer lamp resonates with a broader audience and has gained attention.I enjoy the interplay between the glass globe and the 3D-printed components, and Im currently in the early stages of developing a new, larger design. I hope the new piece will be ready to exhibit at the For the Now design event in November.Sustainability is clearly important in your work, as seen in your use of recycled plant-based plastics. Have you found any challenges when working with sustainable materials? As 3D-printing technology evolves, I believe the availability of recycled filaments will continue to expand, making it easier for designers to opt for environmentally-friendly options. Sustainability is a core value in my daily life, so it feels natural to incorporate it into my studio practice. Like many young designers, Im increasingly conscious of the materials I use and the methods I employ in creating my work. Moreover, the two lamps Ive designed are built with easy disassembly in mind, allowing the recycled plant-based plastic, electrical components, and glass shade to be separated and recycled at the end of the lamps life cycle. This approach not only extends the lifespan of the materials but also promotes responsible disposal, minimizing environmental impact.Currently, Ive been experimenting with a variety of eco-friendly materials, including woodworking, paper pulp made from newspapers and cardboard for furniture, and 3D printing. So far, I havent encountered many challenges in sourcing or working with these sustainable materials, aside from the long drying time of paper pulp.As I continue to grow in my practice, Im looking forward to exploring different materials and processes in the future.Your pieces are made to order in your home studio. Can you share more about your studio setup and the process involved with making each piece? My design process is pretty personal I often find inspiration from whats missing in my own home, tackling one corner at a time. Right now, my home studio works well, but its getting a bit tight, so Im considering renting a bigger space where I can also experiment with furniture. If I have to sacrifice playfulness for functionality, Id rather abandon the project altogether and focus on designs where the playful aspect has full freedom. However, its not an immediate abandonment I prefer to let the project rest while I think of possible solutions. Ive noticed that my initial prototypes often dont differ much from the final result, at least from an aesthetic point of view.Although my pieces are still made-to-order, Im transitioning to small batch production due to increased demand. By pre-assembling a small batch ahead, I can focus more on future projects. I believe this approach can remain sustainable, as any slight overproduction can be managed by finding creative ways to increase demand. To add Dancer or Big Boa (or both!) to your own home collection, visit emilrobbrecht.com.
