  • Motion capture with deformations

A research team from Max Planck Institute for Informatics and Valeo.ai presented a new approach to mocap with deformations. Titled Decaf, it is a method for setting up 3D hand and face reconstructions. The team describes it as the first monocular motion capture method from a video that regresses 3D hand and face motions along with deformations arising from their interactions.

  • Octopus simulated in Houdini | 22 hours on a 12-year-old Dual Xeon Workstation

Here's an awesome digital octopus simulated by CG Generalist and VFX Artist Alex Zee, a.k.a. ghost3dee, in Houdini.

The simulation was set up using the finite element method (FEM), with wrinkles set up using Houdini's FEM solver – the mesh consists of three layers totaling 1.5 million tetrahedron primitives.

  • UE5-powered game in development with Zelda-style mechanics 🛠

Seyed Nasrollahi and his team were kind enough to reach out and show a demo of their UE5-powered indie game in development. This sandbox survival project will let you explore, craft, and build modular machines using Tears of the Kingdom-style mechanics.

  • Procedural wood platform tool powered by Blender's Geometry Nodes 🏚

3D artist Pavel Oliva shared a look at an awesome tool for creating procedural wood platforms in Blender. Powered by Geometry Nodes, the goodie is part of a bigger toolkit meant for arranging pathways in rustic towns.

This tool is still in development but the creator was kind enough to share a post on how you can set up something similar.

  • Cooking eggs in 3D with Blender

Let's start this Friday morning by cooking some eggs. Well... Cooking them in 3D I meant. Virendra "CGDASH" Kumar shared a tasty 2D-looking 3D animation prepared with the help of Blender.

The project uses the Solidify Modifier for the outlines and the "shader to RGB method" for cel-shading. 3-4 hours to complete.

    Bon Appétit!
