Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 and Call of Duty: Warzone Season 01 Now Live
Since Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 has launched weve been pouring over the thrilling Campaign, enjoying our epic Multiplayer matches, and trying to see just how long we can hold out with Round-Based Zombies. Its time to wreak havoc with the launch of Season 01 which brings with it new maps, a variety of new modes, the integration of Call of Duty: Warzone with BO6, and the debut of the new Resurgence map Area 99! Read on for the full details on what you can expect with Season 01.New Multiplayer MapsPrepare for a vast new season of content with six Multiplayer maps including a festive variant of a fan-favorite later in the season. Three of these new maps will land at the start of Season 01 today: Hideout; a medium-sized training site. Extraction, another medium-sized map taking place near the remnants of a heliport; and Heirloom, a compact-sized map taking place in a fine art museum. You can then look forward to the return of Hacienda (a Multiplayer map from Black Ops 4) to arrive during Season 01, Racket, a brand new small-sized underground bank vault, and a variation of Nuketown that is promising to be pretty festive.New Multiplayer ModesTwo new modes will drop with Season 01. The first is Ransack, where youll be looting gold bars from crates on 6v6 maps. Once youve acquired your gold bars, you then bring it back to your teams stash. Naturally, this batch of gold bars needs to be guarded, as enemy teams can raid the stash. So, expect a flurry of activity and planning between gathering and defending to achieve victory. The second is Prop Hunt, where youll play as a Prop (e.g. a piece of the scenery) or as a Hunter. If youre the Prop, youll be given a limited amount of time at the start of the match to find a hiding spot for you to blend in with the landscape. You can drop decoys to try and throw off your scent or change shapes into different scenery. Just dont let the Hunters spot you or the jig it up.You can also look forward to some time-limited modes in the middle of the season and beyond. And expect Ranked Play to land in the coming days featuring plenty of rewards, innovations, and updates.New Warzone Map and MoreWelcome to Area 99! Step into the scorching Nevada desert and uncover a once-classified Weapons Station where Nuketowns were constructed and dispatched for testing. After being dormant for decades, it reopens today for all Operators with the launch of Season 01 Then, head to Urzikstan at launch and soon after launch drop into Rebirth Island, both seamlessly integrated with Black Ops 6 innovations, including Omnimovement.Enjoy classic modes like Resurgence, Battle Royale, and Plunder to kick off with the start of Season 01, followed later by Battle Royale Ranked and a variety of LTM modes later in the season. As mentioned above, Warzone is now integrated with the Black Ops 6 Loadout System. This means you can look forward to features like Dedicated Melee, three Perks, and a Wildcard. You can also transfer your Global Weapon Builds, utilize an enhanced Gunsmith, and choose from over 170 weapons from Modern Warfare II, Modern Warfare III, or Black Ops 6 that youve collected! There will also be the Pick-3 Perk System which allows for three active Perks at the start of the match, with up to six more to find in-game.Everything Else You Need to KnowNew Weapons Seven new weapons will be available across Season 01, including four Primaries (the Krig C AR, Saug SMG, Maelstrom Shotgun, and AMR Mod 4 Sniper Rifle), a Special Secondary (the foldable Sirin 9mm), as well as two Melees (Power Drill and Cleaver). Ken Fulk Just Opened the Dreamiest New Store in Los Angeles
Ken Fulk may be one of the worlds most in-demand designers, but hes really more of a cinematographer, with his genre-bending amalgams of glam rock and Tudor; out-to-sea and down-to-earth; and Howard Hughes and hacienda across countless interior projects. Rooms, as he likes to say, take shape like movies in his head.Fulks latest blockbuster? A brick-and-mortar store opening today in Los Angeles, whose script goes a little something like this: I was inspired by Bunny Mellon, thinking that she had kept a little tucked-away bungalowmaybe in the Kennedy erasecretly in Hollywood, the designer tells us. Translation? Interior design heaven.Douglas FriedmanYou can find the Ken Fulk store tucked into a squat building at 555 Norwich Drive (conveniently across the street from the Pacific Design Center), shielded by hedges and painted in an eye-catching pea-green with trompe loeil stonework. It has almost a secret feeling, Fulk tells us.I was inspired by Bunny Mellon, thinking that she had kept a little tucked-away bungalow. Its a secret that wont be safe for long. Beginning Friday, visitors can shop Fulks magical universe, from vintage furniture thats been lovingly reupholsterered (or Fulked up, as the designer says) to dandy-ish prints in tramp art wood frames to all the accouterments needed for a fabulous Fulked-up dinner party.Douglas FriedmanThen theres custom things that weve madecustom candles and pillows, adds Fulk. Theres also china. Ive been obsessed with china since I was a kid like, I used to literally climb on a step stool and empty my mothers and my aunts vast collection and I would lay it all out on the tables, and then I would reorganize it into the cabinets.Of course, references to the late Bunny Mellons legendary Virginia estate are close at hand. Fulks team created a replica of Mellons mint-green potting shed to showcase gardening tools, wicker baskets, as well as delicate paper blooms from the Green Vase.Douglas FriedmanI really wanted it to feel like a home, Fulk says of the building, which will also be home to his firms five-person Los Angeles office. All of our studios tend to feel more like fabulous lofts or apartmentsnot like a workplace.I really wanted it to feel like a home. That residential sensibility permeates virtually every nook of the store, for which decorative artists created elegant trompe loeil drapery and where timber case goods overflow with cushions and textiles. The message? You may not be able to afford a full Ken Fulk home makeover, but you can live the fantasy by dropping by the store and by bringing a piece home for yourself. We [design for a] rarefied few, says Fulk, whose clients range from Instagram founder Kevin Systrom to Vice President Kamala Harris. How could we share some of our creativity, some of our ideas, and the things we make with a greater audience?Douglas FriedmanThe store marks the first for the ELLE DECOR A-List designer, though he has designed countless products for brands ranging from Pottery Barn to the Rug Company to Pierre Frey. OpenAI Alarmed When Its Shiny New AI Model Isn't as Smart as It Was Supposed to Be
"The AGI bubble is bursting a little bit."Cooling OffOpenAI's next large language model may not be as powerful as many hoped.Code-named Orion, the AI model is sorely underperforming behind the scenes, Bloomberg reports, showing less improvement over its predecessor than GPT-4 did over GPT-3. A similar report from The Information this week indicated that some OpenAI researchers believed that in certain areas like coding, there were no improvements at all.And according to Bloomberg, OpenAI isn't the only AI outfit struggling with diminishing returns. Google's next iteration of its Gemini model is also falling short of internal expectations, while the timeline for Anthropic's release of its much hyped Claude 3.5 Opus is up in the air. These industry-wide struggles may be a sign that the current paradigm of improving AI models via what's known as "scaling" is hitting a brick wall, portending potential economic woes in the future if AI models remain costly to develop without achieving significant leaps in performance towards building an artificial general intelligence."The AGI bubble is bursting a little bit," Margaret Mitchell, chief ethics scientist at the AI startup Hugging Face, told Bloomberg, adding that "different training approaches" may be needed to approach anything like human levels of intelligence and versatility.Gluttonous TechThe ethos that has yielded gains in generative AI so far has been scaling: to make generative AI models more powerful, the primary way to achieve this is by making them bigger. That means adding more processing power AI chips, like from Nvidia and injecting more training data, which has largely been scraped from the web withlittle cost. But as these models get larger and more powerful, they also get hungrier. All that energy isn't cheap Microsoft is looking to reboot entire nuclear power plants to support its AI data centers, for example and free training data is drying up. To obtain new brain food for their AIs, tech companies are using synthetic, computer -generated data. Yet, they still "struggle to get unique, high-quality datasets without human guidance, especially when it comes to language," Lila Tretikov, head of AI strategy at New Enterprise associates, told Bloomberg. And so, to give an idea of all those expenses: in a podcast episode quoted by Bloomberg, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei said that a cutting-edge AI model currently costs around $100 million to build, and estimated that by 2027, they could cost well over $10 billion apiece.Best Days BehindThis year, Anthropic updated its Claude models, but notably snubbed Opus, while references to a near-future release date for it have been scrubbed from its website. Like with OpenAI, researchers at the company reportedly observed only marginal improvements with Opus considering its size and how much it cost to build and run, according to a Bloomberg source.Similarly, Google's Gemini software is falling short of its goals, per Bloomberg, and the company has released few major improvements to its large language model in the meantime. These aren't insurmountable challenges, to be clear. But it's increasingly sounding like the AI industry may not enjoy the same pace ofadvancements as it has in the past decade."We got very excited for a brief period of very fast progress," Noah Giansiracusa, an associate professor of mathematics at Bentley University in Massachusetts, toldBloomberg. "That just wasn't sustainable."Share This Article

Man Who Bragged About Having a Literal Brain Worm to Be Appointed Head of the US Health Department
Image by Chip Somodevilla via GettyA political scion who bragged about having a brain worm yes, we are horribly serious about that is slated to become the United States' next secretary of Health and Human Services.AsPoliticoreports, president-elect Donald Trump is expected to select former opponent Robert F. Kennedy, Jr to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, an apparent back-scratching situation after the onetime candidate dropped out, bent the knee, and endorsed the real estate mogul earlier this year.Indeed, Trump said during an October campaign rally that he promised the anti-vaxxer Masshole he could "go wild" as head of the department overseeing food and medicines an alarming proposal the former president seems likely to follow through on now that he's putting together his second cabinet.Beyond being a dedicated "vaccine skeptic," exposs about Kennedy's many bizarre misadventures that emerged during his failed fringe candidacy have shown time and again that this may be the very last man who should be overseeing the nation's sprawling healthcare apparatus.Earlier this year, theNew York Times revealed via documents from the HHS hopeful's divorce proceedings that he not only ate enough fish to give himself mercury poisoning, but also claimed a neurologist told him a dark spot on his brain scans likely came from a "worm that got into my brain and ate a portion of it and then died."During the 2012 deposition, Kennedy who speaks with a bit of an impediment due to his neurological issues admitted that he "clearly" has "cognitive problems." Nevertheless, his campaign insisted at the time that he was in good health despite his attested brain fog, mercury poisoning, and brain worms.Incredibly, Kennedy's eccentricities don't end there.AsFuturism recounted earlier this election season, the political failson is at the center of a number of bizarre stories involving animals, including his own braggadocious story about dumping the carcass of a spoiling baby bear cub in Manhattan's Central Park and a similarly queasy incident involving a dead whale. Those two anecdotes don't even begin to cover Kennedy's credibility issues, which also include at least one sexual assault allegation from a former babysitter for his family and a more recent consensual affair with a much younger journalist but given that there are similar allegations about the president-elect as well, those may unfortunately end up being less salient than the decomposing bear and the brain worms.Somehow, RFK Jr isn't the least unhealthy person being considered for the notoriously germophobic president-elect's cabinet. That distinction goes to Fox News host and reported Department of Defense secretary nominee Pete Hegseth, who claims he hasn't washed his hands in over a decade.More on freaky political tidings: MAGA Fans Seem to Think AI Videos of Barron Trump Singing Patriotic Songs Are Totally RealShare This Article

Experts Uncover 70,000 Hijacked Domains in Widespread 'Sitting Ducks' Attack Scheme
Nov 14, 2024Ravie LakshmananOnline Fraud / Network SecurityMultiple threat actors have been found taking advantage of an attack technique called Sitting Ducks to hijack legitimate domains for using them in phishing attacks and investment fraud schemes for years. The findings come from Infoblox, which said it identified nearly 800,000 vulnerable registered domains over the past three months, of which approximately 9% (70,000) have been subsequently hijacked."Cybercriminals have used this vector since 2018 to hijack tens of thousands of domain names," the cybersecurity company said in a deep-dive report shared with The Hacker News. "Victim domains include well-known brands, non-profits, and government entities."The little-known attack vector, although originally documented by security researcher Matthew Bryant way back in 2016, didn't attract a lot of attention until the scale of the hijacks was disclosed earlier this August."I believe there is more awareness [since then]," Dr. Renee Burton, vice president of threat intelligence at Infoblox, told The Hacker News. "While we haven't seen the number of hijackings go down, we have seen customers very interested in the topic and grateful for awareness around their own potential risks. The Sitting Ducks attack, at its core, allows a malicious actor to seize control of a domain by leveraging misconfigurations in its domain name system (DNS) settings. This includes scenarios where the DNS points to the wrong authoritative name server. However, there are certain prerequisites in order to pull this off: A registered domain delegates authoritative DNS services to a different provider than the domain registrar, the delegation is lame, and the attacker can "claim" the domain at the DNS provider and set up DNS records without access to the valid owner's account at the domain registrar.Sitting Ducks is both easy to perform and stealthy, in part driven by the positive reputation that many of the hijacked domains have. Some of the domains that have fallen prey to the attacks include an entertainment company, an IPTV service provider, a law firm, an orthopedic and cosmetic supplier, a Thai online apparel store, and a tire sales firm. The threat actors who hijack such domains take advantage of the brand reposition and the fact that they are unlikely to be flagged by security tools as malicious to accomplish their strategic goals."It is hard to detect because if the domain has been hijacked, then it is not lame," Burton explained. "Without any other sign, like a phishing page or a piece of malware, the only signal is a change of IP addresses.""The number of domains is so vast that attempts to use IP changes to indicate malicious activity would lead to a lot of false positives. We 'back in' to tracking the threat actors that are hijacking domains by first understanding how they individually operate and then tracking that behavior."An important aspect that's common to the Sitting Ducks attacks is rotational hijacking, where one domain is repeatedly taken over by different threat actors over time."Threat actors often use exploitable service providers that offer free accounts like DNS Made Easy as lending libraries, typically hijacking domains for 30 to 60 days; however, we've also seen other cases where actors hold the domain for a long period of time," Infoblox noted."After the short-term, free account expires, the domain is 'lost' by the first threat actor and then either parked or claimed by another threat actor."Some of the prominent DNS threat actors that have been found "feasting on" Sitting Ducks attacks are listed below -Vacant Viper, which has used it to operate the 404 TDS, alongside running malicious spam operations, delivering porn, establishing command-and-control (C2), and dropping malware such as DarkGate and AsyncRAT (Ongoing since December 2019)Horrid Hawk, which has used it to conduct investment fraud schemes by distributing the hijacked domains via short-lived Facebook ads (Ongoing since at least February 2023)Hasty Hawk, which has used it to conduct widespread phishing campaigns that primarily mimic DHL shipping pages and fake donation sites that mimic supportukrainenow[.]org and claim to support Ukraine (Ongoing since at least March 2022)VexTrio Viper, which has used to operate its TDS (Ongoing since early 2020)Infoblox said a number of VexTrio Viper's affiliates, such as GoRefresh, have also engaged in Sitting Ducks attacks to conduct fake online pharmaceutical campaigns, as well as gambling and dating scams."We have a few actors who appear to use the domains for malware C2 in which exfiltration is sent over mail services," Burton said. "While others use them to distribute spam, these actors configure their DNS only to receive mail."This indicates that the bad actors are leveraging the seized domains for a broad spectrum of reasons, thereby putting both businesses and individuals at risk of malware, credential theft, and fraud."We have found several actors who have hijacked domains and held them for extensive periods of time, but we have been unable to determine the purpose of the hijack," Infoblox concluded. "These domains tend to have a high reputation and are not typically noticed by security vendors, creating an environment where clever actors can deliver malware, commit rampant fraud, and phish user credentials without consequences."Found this article interesting?
