Manufacturer Murase Kabanko, for one, departed from its typical offerings with a highly detailed nod to a different tradition altogether: samurai. Also known as bushi, samurai were an elite military class in Japan between the 11th and 19th centuries, typically retained by feudal lords. Over the centuries, their status evolved from a mostly provincial role to one of notable political influence, but the warriors were formally abolished in the 1870s as modern militaries emerged. In Murase Kabankos unique, meticulously crafted bag, the company has created an ode to historic armor. Leather craftsman Noriki Okada used scrap pieces from other bags to assemble an accessory that exudes strength and a connection to Japanese cultural heritage. In yellow, black, and red, the intimidating faces of oni demons flank the sides and are embellished with woven details and precise stitching. From small leather plates and numerous brass rivets, the backpack evokes the protective shell of an isopod and references a style of armor that developed between the 14th and 16th centuries known as tosei-gusoku. The suits often exceeded 50 pounds and were engineered for maximal flexibility while providing optimal protection. Tosei-gusoku also refers to types of equipment accompanying Buddhist altars or horses. Okadas randoseru taps into the dual associations of history and utility.Okadas randoseru won the artistic design award at this years Japan Leather Awards. Why that Google Meet error might be a sneaky hacker trick
Published November 14, 2024 10:00am EST close Tech expert explains how AI kidnapping scammers replicate people's real voices Cyble CEO and Chair Beenu Arora explains how scammers use AI to replicate people's real voices in a kidnapping scam. A new scam called ClickFix is targeting users and is on the rise in the U.S. As the name suggests, it prompts you to click on a link, claiming to fix an issue, but in reality it infects your computer with malware.Ireported on this earlier, detailing how threat actors used messages impersonating errors from Google Chrome, Microsoft Word and OneDrive to infect users' computers. Now, a similar type of attack is affecting Google Meet users, regardless of whether theyre using a Windows PC or a Mac. I explain how this cyberattack works and what you can do to protect yourself. A woman working on her laptop (Kurt "CyberGuy" Knutsson)How the Google Meet trap worksAccording to Frenchcybersecurity company Sekoia, it all starts with an email containing a link to a Google Meet. The email can come from any address and may be socially engineered to look like it's related to your organization. It could link to a Google Meet invite for a meeting, webinar, online collaboration or something similar. When you click on the link, youll be directed to a fake Google Meet page, which will soon display a warning claiming theres an issue with your PC. It might say your microphone or camera isn't working or there's a problem with your headset.WHAT IS ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI)?You can expect to see the following URLs in these fake meeting emails:meet[.]google[.]us-join[.]commeet[.]google[.]web-join[.]commeet[.]googie[.]com-join[.]usmeet[.]google[.]cdm-join[.]usThis fake page will also display a pop-up offering to fix the issue, showing phrases like "Press the key combination" or "CTRL+V." When you follow these instructions, malicious code is pasted into the Windows prompt, infecting your computer with malware. Once the code is on your computer, hackers can gain access to your cryptocurrencies, sensitive files and personal information.Sekoia has uncovered several other malware distribution clusters beyond Google Meet. These include platforms like Zoom, PDF readers, fake video games (such as Lunacy, Calipso, Battleforge and Ragon), web3 browsers and projects like NGT Studio and messenger apps such as Nortex. Fake Google Meet page (Sekoia)The bigger pictureBack in July, McAfee noticed that ClickFix campaigns were ramping up, especially in the U.S. and Japan (viaBleeping Computer). Lately, two groups Slavic Nation Empire and Scamquerteo have been behind some of these attacks. Both are said to be offshoots of larger crypto scam gangs Marko Polo and CryptoLove.Earlier this year, Proofpoint found thatmalware was spreading by pretending to be fake error messages for Google Chrome, Word and OneDrive, tricking people into downloading malicious code. They also pointed out a method called "email lure," where hackers send fake emails pretending to be from MS Word to infect computers.GET FOX BUSINESS ON THE GO BY CLICKING HERE Fake page requests (Sekoia)4 ways to protect yourself from harmful softwareThe fake Google Meet page creates a sense of urgency, making users click on the links and unknowingly compromise their devices. There are several steps you can take to protect yourself from such cyberattacks.1. Have strong antivirus software:The best way to protect yourself from clicking malicious links that install malware that may get access to your private information is to have antivirus protection installed on all your devices. This can also alert you of any phishing emails or ransomware scams.Get my picks for the best 2024 antivirus protection winners for your Windows, Mac, Android and iOS devices.2. Monitor your accounts: Regularly review your bank statements, credit card statements and other financial accounts for any unauthorized activity. If you notice any suspicious transactions, report them immediately to your bank or credit card company.3. Place a fraud alert:Contact one of the three major credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian or TransUnion) and request a fraud alert to be placed on your credit file. This will make it more difficult for identity thieves to open new accounts in your name without verification.4. Enable two-factor authentication:Enabletwo-factor authentication whenever possible. This adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification, such as a code sent to your phone, in addition to your password.Kurts key takeawaysHackers have come up with sneaky ways to trick you into installing malware. They use social engineering to make emails and website prompts look legit, hoping you'll click on a link and follow their instructions. The best way to protect yourself is by avoiding unknown links and always checking the URL of the page you're on before taking any action.CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APPHave you ever received an email or prompt that looked suspicious but seemed legitimate at first glance? A fifth of new PCs shipped in Q3 were AI-optimised
HN Works - stock.adobe.comNewsA fifth of new PCs shipped in Q3 were AI-optimisedPC manufacturers are working hard to showcase the benefits of premium devices that use neural processing units to deliver on-device AI accelerationByCliff Saran,Managing EditorPublished: 14 Nov 2024 14:58 A fifth of all PCs shipped in the third quarter of 2024 were equipped to support artificial intelligence (AI), Canalys has reported in its latest PC market report. The Canalys data shows that AI-capable PC shipments hit 13.3 million in the quarter, accounting for 20% of all PCs sold. The analyst firm defines AI-capable PCs as desktops and notebooks that include a chipset for dedicated AI workloads, such as a neural processing unit (NPU).Canalys reported that Windows devices accounted for a majority of AI-capable PC shipments for the first time, capturing a 53% share. What is significant is that these Windows-certified devices, known as Copilot+ PCs, are based on the Qualcomm Snapdragon ARM-based chip rather than an x86-compatible processor from the likes of Intel or AMD.Discussing the data, Canalys principal analyst Ishan Dutt said: Copilot+ PCs equipped with Snapdragon X series chips enjoyed their first full quarter of availability, while AMD brought Ryzen AI 300 products to the market and Intel officially launched its Lunar Lake series. However, both x86 chipset vendors are still awaiting Copilot+ PC support for their offerings from Microsoft, which is expected to arrive this month. While the Windows 11 refresh cycle and processor roadmaps will continue to drive penetration, however, Canalys believes there may be a reluctance to buy the new technology, which is designed to provide on-device AI.Despite the positive momentum, significant work must still be done to convince both channel partners and end customers of the benefits of AI-capable PCs, said Dutt. This is especially true for more premium offerings, such as Copilot+ PCs, which Microsoft requires to have at least 40 NPU TOPS [trillions of operations per second] alongside other hardware specifications. There is a sense that these devices appear to be targeting the premium end of the PC market. For instance, even with Black Friday deals, Currys cheapest AI-capable device is currently an HP OmniBook X 14in laptop Copilot+ PC, which is on sale at 799, reduced from 999. The most expensive is a 2,149 Microsoft 15in Surface laptop Copilot+ PC. The majority of the devices listed are over 1,000, which may put them beyond the budget of many organisations. In fact, just under a third (31%) of PC resellers do not plan to sell Copilot+ PCs in 2025, according to Canalys, while a further 34% expect such devices to account for less than 10% of their PC sales next year. With Windows 10 end of support now less than a year away, the coming quarters represent a critical opportunity to drive a significant portion of an aged installed base to be upgraded to an AI-capable PC, Dutt added.Given the premium these AI-capable devices command, Canalys noted that manufacturers are working with software firms to help them sell the benefits of AI PCs. For instance, at its Imagine AI event in September, HP showcased its collaboration with software providers to deliver on-device AI experiences. Lenovo, meanwhile, has focused on embedding proprietary AI tools and agents into its PCs, such as Creator Zone, Learning Zone and Lenovo AI Now.For vendors like Lenovo and Dell, whose offerings extend beyond PCs, on-device AI will be a key component of the delivery of broader, more holistic AI services and solutions, said Canalys analyst Kieren Jessop. The Canalys data also reveals how Apple is not directly competing with Microsoft. Since 2020, Apple has shifted away from using Intel processors to its own chips based on ARM architecture. It is now shipping devices with the M3 chip, the third generation of so-called Apple silicon. This potentially makes Apple devices running ARM-based hardware a more mature offering than the mainstay of PC manufacturers, which have jumped on the Copilot+ bandwagon.Apples strategic approach in this landscape is distinct, said Jessop. It is leveraging its vertically integrated ecosystem to create features that do not need to directly compete with Microsofts suite of productivity tools, such as Copilot Pro for Microsoft 365, which is compatible with macOS. Apple can instead focus its differentiation at the hardware and operating system level, positioning itself against Windows OEMs [original equipment manufacturers] in an effort to make market share gains during the ongoing refresh cycle.Read more about neural processing units (NPUs)ARM accelerates Edge AI: NPU said to deliver four times performance uplift for high-performance edge AI applications, such as factory automation and smart cameras, through new IoT reference design platform.Forrester preparing for the era of the AI PC: PC manufacturers are gatecrashing the artificial intelligence industry party. There are now a number of devices that incorporate AI acceleration hardware. In The Current Issue:Interview: Niall Robinson, head of product innovation, Met OfficeIAM: Enterprises face a long, hard road to improveDownload Current IssueDapr dresses up for CNCF project graduation + Diagrid delights Open Source InsiderPatent troll-busting: CNCF launches Cloud-Native Heroes Challenge CW Developer NetworkView All Blogs

I spent the weekend reading on Amazon's newest Kindle - and it's more capable than it looks
ZDNET's key takeaways Amazon's base model Kindle retails for $110 and promises quicker page-turning, a brighter display, and a fun matcha green colorway (alongside the classic black). The e-reader is more reactive and vivid, and reading anything on the lightweight, portable device is convenient. This model has the shortest battery life out of the entire lineup, but it's still six weeks long. more buying choices Kindles aren't like other tablets or smart devices; their sole purpose is to be as close to analog as possible for a tablet -- delivering distraction-free reading with a battery life that lasts weeks and a screen that's easy to view no matter the environment. That means Kindle customers and devotees aren't expecting cutting-edge technology in a new release. They just want a great device with important but minimal finishing touches that improve upon the previous generation. This is especially true for the base model Kindle, the most affordable and least feature-rich model in the new Kindle lineup that includes an updated Paperwhite, Scribe, and a brand-new entrant, the Colorsoft (Kindle's first-ever full-color model). The base model doesn't have an adjustable warm light like the Paperwhite, drawing capabilities like the Scribe, nor vivid color like the Colorsoft. What the 2024 Kindle does have, however, is beautiful and effective simplicity.I spent some time reading and playing around with the new base model Kindle, and I highly recommend it if you're in the market for your first e-reader or if you're upgrading from a Kindle you purchased more than two years ago. Amazon released the previous base model Kindle in 2022. The 2024 version keeps most of the specs of the base model, with a few exceptions. These include different exterior colors (Matcha and Black), a brighter front light, a higher contrast ratio, and a faster page-turn rate. Also: This E Ink reader that nearly replaced my Android phone is at an all-time low priceThe Matcha colorway is lovely and fun, and is much more vibrant than the Navy or Black options from the 2022 lineup. One of my favorite parts about the base model is its pocketability and portability, thanks to its compact size. The size of the display is the same six inches -- an amenable display size for on-the-go reading. The 1072 x 1448 screen resolution, the 5.56 oz. weight, and the six-week battery life haven't changed either.I spent the weekend absorbed in some e-books (most notably, the newest Emily Henry novel) that I rented from my library. On one busy Saturday, I stashed the Kindle in my dress pocket to read on the subway in between errands. My friend and I had been walking around the city that day, and I had kept the e-reader in my pocket, where I barely noticed it throughout our journey. On a lazy Sunday morning, I lounged in bed, lying on my side, reading the Kindle with one hand, something I can never do with a physical novel because of how uncomfortable it is to hold ambidextrously. Nina Raemont/ZDNETWhile I was reading, I noticed that the page-turning and book-loading speeds were significantly quicker than on my Kindle Oasis or Kindle Paperwhite from 2022. I tested my old Paperwhite and my new Kindle and found that the new Kindle turned pages a smidgen quicker than the Paperwhite. As far as battery life is concerned, I can't confirm that this e-reader lasts the advertised six weeks because I've only tested the Kindle for a week. Still, six weeks is a long time between charges, and I haven't had any dramatic dips in battery life so far.As somebody who enjoys growing her physical book collection but also enjoys sampling various novels and nonfiction books from the library, a Kindle is a great device for reading and renting books you may never pick up and buy but are still interested in. I can fit this portable device into my pocket or work bag and read on the bus, before or after work, or while waiting at doctor appointments.Because reading is its only functionality, the Kindle offers a truly distraction-free interface that makes knocking out reading assignments for high school or college students less intrusive than a laptop or a tablet.I'm not using a Kindle to replace physical books. Instead, I use a Kindle to expand the types and genres of books I'd never plan on owning in the first place. An e-reader (with the help of a library card) allows you to widen the scope of literature that you read and sample different authors and stories that you'd never fit within your bookbag, suitcase, or bookcase.ZDNET's buying adviceIf you haven't purchased an e-reader before or are contemplating buying one for a loved one over the holidays, I'd without a doubt recommend this Kindle. It has all the features you'd need in a respectable e-reader, like a vivid display, reactive and quick speeds, great battery life, and a lovely color, all for a good price.Because a lot of the specs are unchanged, upgrading from the 2022 base model to the2024 base modelisn't the most reasonable thing to do, unless you aren't pleased with your 2022 Kindle's color, page-turn rate, or display brightness, and are willing to spend $110 to change that. If you want one more inch of display, different e-reader colors, an adjustable warm light for reading in different environments, and double the battery life, you may want to upgrade to the Paperwhite, which is $50 more, but I can read just fine with the base model, I love the pastel-y mint of the Matcha colorway and the compact display, and I can certainly charge my Kindle once every six weeks, so spending $50 more seems silly. This article was originally published on October 29, 2024, and was updated on November 14, 2024.Featured reviews

Global Measles Cases Up 20% In A Year, With Poor Vaccination To Blame
Sick child with red rash spots from measles.gettyMeasles is surging around the world, with around 10.3 million reported cases last year.Thats an increase of 20% on 2022, according to the World Health Organization, which blames the growth in numbers on inadequate vaccine coverage.Measles is highly contagious and potentially fatal. Young children are particularly vulnerable to the disease, which killed an estimated 107,500 people in 2023, most of whom were under 5. This is an increase of about 8% on the year before.Countries need almost all children (95%) to have two measles shots to prevent outbreaks of the disease and keep the population safe, the WHO says.Last year, just 74% had received both their recommended doses, while 87% had received one.Measles vaccine has saved more lives than any other vaccine in the past 50 years, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said in a statement. To save even more lives and stop this deadly virus from harming the most vulnerable, we must invest in immunization for every person, no matter where they live.Measles signs and symptomsMeasles is airborne and spreads when infected people cough, sneeze and breath. It causes symptoms like a high fever, a cough, a runny nose and a distinctive rash that can appear over the whole body.MORE FOR YOUIt can lead to severe complications including blindness, brain swelling, ear infections, severe diarrhoea and pneumonia.Vaccines train the body to respond to the virus that causes measles, making it harder for the disease to take hold.Theres no set treatment for measles. But caregivers can help a sick patient by making them comfortable and helping relieve their symptoms, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. In the U.S., measles is relatively rare. In 2023, just 59 cases were recorded nationwide, largely because of longstanding childhood vaccination programs.Nonetheless, outbreaks still hit the country. This year, 277 cases have been recorded so far, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Vaccine uptakeVaccine skepticism is often blamed for rising measles rates. The triple measles, mumps and rubella shots that protect against the disease have long been the subject of controversy, despite scientific evidence showing they are safe and effective.A fraudulent paper in medical journal The Lancet did much to fuel suspicion of the shots in the 1990s and early 2000. British former doctor Andrew Wakefield who was later stripped of the title published falsified research that appeared to show a link between the MMR shots and autism. In reality, no such link has been found. In 2010, The Lancet retracted the paper. But the autism rumour has still been well and truly sown. It took root in the U.S., where Wakefield went on to relocate.President-elect Donald Trumps pick to lead the Department of Health and Human Services, Robert F Kennedy Jr, has long promoted the view that vaccines cause autism. He is currently on leave from the position of chairman at an anti-vaccine activist organization called the Childrens Health Defense, which is known for spreading misinformation about health issues, including measles immunization, on social media.

4 Signs You Are Actually Ready To Love Again, By A Psychologist
Real love starts with looking withinare you truly ready to step back into the world of dating and ... [+] commitment?gettyMost people experience heartbreakfailed relationships, painful breakups and the disappointment of investing in someone they thought was the one. Many go through cycles of loving and parting, only to face hurt again. After each fall comes a period of rebuilding, rediscovering joy in solitude and eventually finding peace on ones own. For some, this takes months; for others, it takes years. Yet, a moment comes when theyre truly ready to love again.A 2018 study published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin suggests that feeling ready for a relationship, or commitment readiness, increases both the likelihood of entering a relationship and the level of commitment within it. Personal timingthe sense that its the right moment in ones life for a meaningful connectionis critical. Here are four signs that might mean youre ready for a hopeful new beginning.1. Youre Driven By The Right IntentionsIntentions shape our actions, especially in relationships. If youre seeking companionship out of a genuine desire to connect and grow with someone, youre on the right track. This contrasts with relationships pursued to avoid loneliness, fill a void, or meet societal expectations.Healthy intentions foster partnerships based on shared respect, where both individuals are valued for who they arenot as solutions to underlying fears. Entering relationships for the right reasons helps avoid falling into unfulfilling or unhealthy patterns.Read More: 2 Emotional Side-Effects Of Thwarted BelongingnessBy A PsychologistTrue relationship readiness involves seeking a partnership that fosters growth, connection and shared meaningnot just companionship. A 2016 study in the Journal of Family Psychology identified four dimensions of deeper and richer relationships:Personal growth. Relationships should support each partners individual development and self-improvement.Relational giving. Each partner engages in mutual support, fostering a reciprocal sense of giving within the relationship.Deeper connection. Beyond surface-level satisfaction, a meaningful relationship involves a profound, fulfilling bond.Goal sharing. Partners align on values and aspirations, creating a shared purpose that enhances relational depth. These dimensions show that true relationship readiness isnt about avoiding loneliness or seeking quick happiness. Entering with the right intentionsa commitment to genuine connection and shared goalscreates a foundation for a flourishing relationship.2. You Understand Yourself DeeplyPast relationships often reveal unhelpful patternsstaying due to a fear of being alone or clinging to situations due to low self-esteem, believing this is as good as it gets. These dynamics can lead to unhealthy compromises and ultimately end with the realization that leaving is the only option, often sparking a painful sense of lost time and effort.Yet, these experiences are powerful tools for self-discovery. They highlight what you seek, your unmet needs and deeper insecurities. With this awareness, you begin to identify your triggers, understand the wounds youre tending to and establish where your boundaries need to be drawn. These insights come from both past lessons and intentional self-reflection. A study published in the Journal of Self and Identity reinforces this, finding that individuals with high self-concept clarity experience greater relationship satisfaction and commitment.Such self-clarity lets you enter relationships from a place of strength and authenticity. When you know yourself deeply, its a powerful sign that youre ready to commit to a meaningful relationshipone where you can honor your values, respect your boundaries and build genuine, lasting connections.3. You Know What Youre Looking ForUnderstanding what you truly want in a relationship is essential to forming a meaningful connection. It goes beyond vague ideas of companionship and requires understanding your specific needs, values and expectations, as well as learning how to communicate them effectively. When youve put thought into these aspects, you approach dating with clarity and purpose. This involves:Acknowledging your feelings. Being in touch with your emotions, without suppressing them, helps you understand what feels right in a relationship.Recognizing your values. Values shape the core of what you desire in a partnership. Reflecting on what truly matters to yousuch as honesty, ambition or kindnesscan guide you toward a partner who respects those ideals.Understanding your emotional needs. Knowing your views on intimacy, communication and support can help you identify a partner who can fulfill them in meaningful ways.Communicating openly. Being ready for a relationship means being prepared to express your needs. If you feel comfortable asking for what you want and listening to what your partner needs, youre on the path to a healthy, transparent relationship.Without this clarity, its easy to feel unsure or settle for relationships that dont match what you need. Reflecting on past experiences often reveals what matters most to you. For example, you may realize that you need a partner who respects your independence, shares your sense of humor or values communication. When you have a well-defined idea of what you want, it signals that youre ready to build a partnership that fits with your life.4. You Are Healing And Open To The Dating ProcessOne of the most evident signs youre ready for a new relationship is when youre actively healing and open to the ups and downs of dating.Healing doesnt mean being entirely over past hurtsits about recognizing old wounds, understanding what went wrong and knowing where your boundaries lie. This awareness lets you step into new connections with a grounded sense of self, free from the weight of past experiences.Equally important is embracing the dating process itself. Accepting that dating isnt always straightforward allows you to approach each experience with resilience and curiosity. Why a Technocracy Fails Young People
As a chaplain at Harvard and MIT, I have been particularly concerned when talking to young people, who hope to be the next generation of American leaders. What moral lessons should they draw from the 2024 election? Elite institutions like those I serve have, after all, spent generations teaching young people to pursue leadership and success above all else. And, well, the former-turned-next POTUS has become one of the most successful political leaders of this century. The electoral resurrection of a convicted felon whose own former chief of staff, a former Marine Corps General no less, likened him to a fascist, requires far more than re-evaluation of Democratic Party policies. It demands a re-examination of our entire societys ethicaland even spiritualpriorities. Its not that students on campuses like mine want to be the next Trump (though he did win a majority among white, male, college-educated voters). It is, however, common for them to idolize billionaire tech entrepreneurs like Elon Musk and Peter Thiel. Both Musk and Thiel factored significantly in Trump and Vances victory; both will be handsomely rewarded for their support. But is a technocracy the best we can do as a model for living a meaningful life today? It is past time to recognize that the digital technologies with which many of us now interact from the moment we wake until the moment we drift into sleep (and often beyond that) have ceased to be mere tools. Just like we went from users to being the products by which companies like Facebook and Google make trillions in advertising revenue, we now have become the tools by which certain technologists can realize their grandest financial and political ambitions.Policy reform alonewhile necessarywont save us. But neither will tech figures like Musk or Theil. In fact, we need an alternative to an archetype that I like to call The Drama of the Gifted Technologist, of which Musk, Thiel, and other tech leaders have become avatars.Based on the ideas of the noted 20th century psychologist Alice Miller, and on my observation of the inner lives of many of the world's most gifted students, the "Drama of the Gifted Technologist" starts with the belief that one is only "enough," or worthy of love and life, if one achieves extraordinary things, namely through leadership in tech or social media clout.Ive seen this "drama" become a kind of official psychopathology of the Ivy League and Silicon Valley. It began, in some ways, with the accumulation of friends on Facebook over a decade ago, to gain social relevance. And it has now graduated to become the psychological and even spiritual dynamic driving the current AI arms-race, also known as "accelerationism. See for example the influential billionaire AI cheerleader VC Marc Andreessen's famous "Techno-Optimist's Manifesto," which uses the phrase "we believe" 133 times, arguing that "any deceleration of AI will cost lives..." and that "AI that was prevented from existing is a form of murder." Or Sam Altman's urgent quest for trillions of dollars to create a world of AI "abundance, consequences for the climate, democracy, or, say, biological weapons be damned. Or Thiels belief that one needs a "near-messianic attitude" to succeed in venture capital. Or young men's hero worship of tech "genius" figures like Musk, who, as former Twitter owner Jack Dorsey said, is the singular solution: the one man to single-handedly take humanity beyond earth, into the stars. And why wouldnt the drama of the gifted technologist appeal to young people? They live, after all, in a world so unequal, with a future so uncertain, that the fortunate few really do live lives of grandeur in comparison to the precarity and struggle others face.Read More: Inside Elon Musks Struggle for the Future of AIStill, some might dismiss these ideas as mere hype and bluster. Id love to do so, too. But I've heard far too many "confessions" reminiscent of what famous AI "doomer" Eliezer Yudkowsky once said most starkly and alarmingly: that "ambitious people would rather destroy the world than never amount to anything."Of course, Im not saying that the aspiring leaders I work with are feeling so worthless and undeserving that they put themselves on a straight path from aspirational tech leadership towards world-destruction. Plenty are wonderful human beings. But it doesnt take many hollow young men to destroy, if not the whole world, then at least far too much of it. Ultimately, many gifted young adults are feeling extraordinarily normal feelings: Fear. Loneliness. Grief. But because their drama doesn't permit them to simply be normal, they too often look for ways to dominate others, rather than connect with them in humble mutual solidarity. In the spring of 2023, I sat and discussed all this over a long lunch with a group of about 20 soon-to-graduate students at Harvards Kennedy School of Government. The students, in many cases deeply anxious about their individual and collective futures, asked me to advise them on how to envision and build ethical, meaningful, and sustainable lives in a world in which technological (and climate) change was causing them a level of uncertainty that was destabilizing at best, debilitating at worst. I suggested they view themselves as having inherent worth and value, simply for existing. Hearing that, one of the students respondedwith laudable honesty and forthrightnessthat she found that idea laughable.I dont blame her for laughing. It truly can be hard to accept oneself unconditionally, at a time of so much dehumanization. Many students I meet find it much easier to simply work harder. Ironically, their belief that tech success and wealth will save them strikes me as a kind of digital puritanism: a secularized version of the original Puritanism that founded Harvard College in the 1630's, in which you were either considered one of the world's few true elites, bound for Heaven, or if not, your destiny was the fire and brimstone vision of Hell. Perhaps techs hierarchies arent quite as extreme as traditional Puritanisms, which allowed no way to alter destiny, and where the famous "Protestant work ethic" was merely an indicator of one's obvious predestination. But given the many ways in which today's tech is worsening social inequality, the difference isn't exactly huge. The good news? Many reformers are actively working to make tech more humane.Among those is MacArthur fellow and scholar of tech privacy Danielle Citron, an expert in online abuse, who told me she worries that gifted technologists can lose their way behind screens, because they dont see the people whom they hurt.To build a society for future cyborgs as ones goal, Citron continued, suggests that these folks dont have real, flesh and blood relationshipswhere we see each other in the way that Martin Buberdescribed.Buber, an influential Jewish philosopher whose career spanned the decades before and after the Holocaust, was best known for his idea, first fully expressed in his 1923 essay I and Thou, that human life finds its meaning in relationships, and that the world would be better if each of us imagined our flesh-and-blood connections with one anotherrather than achievements or technologiesas the ultimate expression of our connection to the divine.Indeed. I dont happen to share Bubers belief in a divine authority; Im an atheist and humanist. But I share Bubers faith in the sacredness of human interrelationship. And I honor any form of contemporary spiritual teaching, religious or not, that reminds us to place justice, and one anothers well-being, over ambitionor winning. We are not digital beings. We are not chatbots, optimized for achievement and sent to conquer this country and then colonize the stars through infinite data accumulation. We are human beings who care deeply about one another because we care about ourselves. Our very existence, as people capable of loving and being loved, is what makes us worthy of the space we occupy, here in this country, on this planet, and on any other planet we may someday find ourselves inhabiting.
