Eggs, fruit, and vegetables are being recalled due to Salmonella and Listeria outbreaks
Theres never a good time for a food recall, but one of the worst is during a major holiday period like Thanksgiving when families gather en masse over home-cooked meals. Just before this weeks holidays, the U.S. Department of Agricultures Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a notice for a recall involving over 72,000 pounds of chicken and meat products due to a deadly Listeria outbreak. Now, the Centers For Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have posted additional notices about the recalls, including eggs, fruits, and vegetables. Heres what you need to know about the latest recalls. What are the reasons for the recalls? On Wednesday and Thursday, the CDC posted notices of three additional food recalls due to fears of possible Salmonella and Listeria contamination. From the information available, it does not seem like any of the new recalls are linked with each other, nor do they appear to be linked with last weeks chicken and meat recall. The three recalls cover three different types of products. One recall involves Kirkland Signature organic eggs sold at Costco, which may be contaminated with Salmonella. The next recall involves dozens of ready-to-eat fruit and vegetable products that officials fear may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. Finally, the third recall involves whole cucumbers, which officials are concerned may be contaminated with Salmonella and were sold in states across the country.Kirkland Signature Egg recallOn Wednesday, a CDC notice announced that Handsome Brook Farms was voluntarily recalling 10,800 retail units of eggs because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The eggs were sold under the Kirkland Signature brand with the product name Organic Pasture Raised 24-Count Eggs. The recalled eggs have the UPC code 9661910680 printed on the package, but only packages with the Julian code 327 and a Use By Date of Jan 5, 2025, are included in the recall, according to the notice. The eggs were reportedly sold in 25 Costco stores in Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee starting on Friday, November 22, 2024.The label and product markings for the recalled eggs can be viewed here.Ready-to-eat fruit and vegetable recallOn Wednesday, Gracies Kitchens of New Haven, Connecticut, announced it was recalling dozens of its ready-to-eat fruit and vegetable products after it was discovered they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes. The ready-to-eat products came in different packaging sizes and were sold under three brand names:Gracies KitchensKing KullenWild By NatureThe recalled products include everything from peppers & onions to cantaloupe slices to Fajita mixes. You can find a full list of the recalled products on the CDC notice here and see their product labels here.SunFed cucumber recallOn Tuesday, SunFed Produce LLC announced it was recalling all sizes of its whole fresh American cucumbers that were packaged in bulk cardboard containers due to fears of potential Salmonella contamination.SundFed says the containers were labeled with the SunFed label or in a generic white box or black plastic crate with a sticker that provides the implicated growers name, Agrotato, S.A. de C.V., according to the notice posted on the CDCs website. The recalled cucumbers were sold in the following states: Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. They were also sold in Alberta, British Columbia, Calgary, Saskatchewan, and Ontario, Canada. However, the notice states the recalled produce may have made it into other states as well.Photos of the recalled cucumbers, their packaging, and their labeling can be found here.Has anyone been harmed by consuming the recalled products? As of the time of this writing, no known illnesses have been reported. What are the symptoms of a Listeria infection?According to the CDC, short-term symptoms of a Listeria infection in otherwise healthy adults include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. However, Listeria can also cause serious and fatal infections in people who are elderly, frail, have weakened immune systems, or who are newborns. The infection can also cause stillbirths and miscarriages in pregnant women. What are the symptoms of a Salmonella infection?Signs of a Salmonella infection in otherwise healthy persons include fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, according to the CDC. But if the bacteria gets into the bloodstream, it can cause more serious complications, including arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis, the agency notes. What should I do if I have the recalled products?Do not consume them; instead, dispose of them. The Sunfed and Handsome Brook Farms notices also say the recalled products can be returned to the place of purchase.Consumers should also clean and sanitize any surfaces that may have come into contact with the recalled products.

Hybe shares fall as K-pop sensation NewJeans announces break with the entertainment agency
Shares in South Korean entertainment giant Hybe plummeted yesterday after members of the companys preeminent K-pop girl group NewJeans announced they were splitting from the firm. Hybe, which is also home to boy band BTS and trades on the Korean Stock exchange, lost nearly 7% in market value on the news and closed the day 4% down.On Thursday, the five NewJeans members held a press conference announcing they were terminating their contract with Hybe, which owns the ADOR label that represents the band. NewJeanss announcement comes after months of tension with the company. The K-pop band is one of the biggest global sensations to come out of South Korea since BTS and Blackpink. Launched in 2022, NewJeans generated $83 million in 2023 revenue for ADOR via album sales, live events, and brand partnerships with heavyweights including Apple, Coca-Cola, and Nike. NewJeanss stratospheric success is widely credited to the orchestration of the bands creative director, Min Hee-jin.Before her departure from ADOR, Min served as CEO and producer for NewJeans, overseeing both the business and creative direction for the band. In a rare, multi-hour interview last year with Fast Companybefore these controversies startedshe spoke about pushing back on the pressure put on young K-pop artists, who often train with labels rather than attend school.I want to [help] them make fun, happy memoriessomething that they can really look back on and enjoy even when they grow old, Min said.I think when youre working with such young girls and [youre] somebody who owns this business, you have to have an ethical sense of mind. What I wanted to do was, just like school, I wanted to teach them ways that would help them live a really happy life later on.Earlier this year, Hybe attempted to push Min out of the ADOR label. The battle has seen accusations fly on both sides, including alleged mistreatment at the companys hands against NewJeanss members. For its part, the band has stayed firmly on the side of Min.And now the band has announced they will terminate their contract with Hybe in protest of the companys dispute with Min, reports the Yonhap News Agency.Neither Hybe nor ADOR have shown any willingness to improve the situation or accept our demands, the band said at a press conference. ADOR lacks both the will and the ability to protect NewJeans. There is nothing we can gain professionally from staying here, so the five of us see no reason to remain at ADOR, the NewJeans member known as Hanni said at the event. In response to the bands announcement, Hybe issued a statement in which it said, We regret that the press conference on the termination of the contract took place without sufficient consideration, and even before we gave our response to the demand letter. The statement also claimed that As a party to the exclusive contract, ADOR has not violated the terms, and a unilateral claim that trust has been broken does not constitute valid grounds for termination of a contract.NewJeanss announcement of their intent to terminate their contract comes amid a down year for Hybe. With BTS on hiatus while members complete their military service and sluggish sales of other artists, Hybes revenue for the the first nine months of 2024 was down nearly 40% year over year. Its stock price has fallen 16% since the beginning of the year.

Takk creates mobile child's bedroom made of construction waste
The founders of Spanish studio Takk have added a mobile child's bedroom made of concrete blocks and recycled insulation to their industrial apartment in Barcelona as part of ongoing work on the space.Roma's Bedroom was designed and built by Takk founders Mireia Luzrraga and Alejandro Muio for their six-year-old daughter, Roma, and is located within the family's larger 400-metre-square loft space in Barcelona. The founders of Takk have created a mobile bedroom for their daughterElevated on a wheeled base, the structure can be moved around the apartment to accommodate its constantly changing layout, which is the result of Luzrraga and Muio designing and building a rotation of large-scale architectural works. The structure was created at the request of Roma, who desired her own space. According to her parents, the generously pitched roof and elevated foundation were her ideas and resemble, they note, a child's drawing of a house. The bedroom was designed to move around the industrial loft space the family calls homeThe bedroom is comprised of a wheeled foundation made from wood. Atop the foundation, stacked concrete blocks support a wooden enclosure that's accessed by wooden steps and a small yellow door.Operable, white windows and bubble windows surround the perimeter of the space, which is lined internally with wooden panels.Read: Energy-saving 10K House in Barcelona is a "labyrinth that multiplies perspectives"On another side of the structure, a ladder leads up to an exposed attic space concealed underneath the pitched roof. Both this area and the enclosed bedroom below are intended for sleeping, albeit in different temperatures."As part of adapting a 400-metre industrial space into a home, it became clear that it would be impossible to climate control the entire space without incurring significant economic and ecological costs," said Takk.It is made of recycled materials from previous projects"In this regard, the new bedroom for Roma, a six-year-old girl, offers two ways of being inhabited," the studio added. "One is interior, for the colder months of the year, and the other is exterior, under the gabled roof, designed to be used during the summer months."Like other structures in the Takk apartment, the bedroom is comprised of waste materials from previous projects, such as concrete blocks, timber, drywall sheets and the recycled cotton insulation that lines the exterior. An enclosed space is suitable for the winter monthsLuzrraga and Muio use recycled materials in many of their projects to challenge conventional materials used in residential projects."It challenges modern design and architecture to address the climate crisis," said the pair."Despite the seemingly rigid and repetitive regulations regarding home spatial characteristics, this project aims to showcase the possibilities of renewal in the housing industry."An upper level was built for sleeping in the warmer monthsAdditionally, despite their industrial qualities, the studio used these materials to create a "cheerful and playful" space for Roma."Roma's bedroom is an example of how housing codes can be modified to suit environmental factors while promoting a more liberated and pleasurable experience," said the designers.Previously, Luzrraga and Muio have designed and built an "igloo" bedroom for Roma and renovated another Barcelona apartment on a budget of 10,000 euros. The photography is by Jos Hevia.Project credits:Collaborators: Roger Monfort, Berta RibaudiThe post Takk creates mobile child's bedroom made of construction waste appeared first on Dezeen.
